Episode 1418

Aired: Wednesday December 1, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's close and the titles, Rachel steps into the foyer and looks around, remarking that "nothing ever changes about this place." Edward demands to know what she's doing back, and Rachel says "I heard the news about your grandmother and I came to pay my respects. I know how an emotionally sentimental man like you must be torn up about it all." Edward shouts for her to get out, and Rachel answers "All right, Edward. I won't goad you anymore. I came here to see if our son was all right. I miss him." Edward snaps "You miss him, yet you abandoned him!" Rachel says "You threw me out of this house, I didn't abandon him. I can only imagine what you've told him about me these past two years. But I'll change that." Edward says "How will you change anything?" Rachel says "Because I'll be staying here for quite a while, Edward. We are still married, you know. You've never filed for divorce since you're so afraid of tarnishing the good Collins name. That gives me quite a lot of power, as I've discovered. So you can swallow your pride and lead me to my son." Edward stands frozen. Upstairs, Jamison is with Quentin, asking him what's going to happen now that "great gramma is dead." Quentin says he doesn't know, and Jamison asks him if "my father will make you leave if he becomes the master of the house." Quentin laughs and says that "wild horses couldn't drag me away from you if your father tries to throw me out." Jamison smiles, and then looks shocked when he sees Rachel standing in his doorway. "Jamison!" she says with a smile. Almost scared, he says "Mother?" Quentin stands and turns and says "Rachel!" She smiles at Quentin and then hugs a stunned Jamison as Quentin watches.

Downstairs, Quentin comes into the drawing room while Beth is cleaning up. She asks him what he makes of Rachel's return. Quentin says he doesn't know, only that he's not "thrilled to see her." Beth asks Quentin what he'll do if Edward throws him out if Edward inherits all of Collinwood. Quentin smiles at her and says "Edward could never throw me out of here. And even if he did, perhaps I'd travel the world. Perhaps I'd take you with me." She smiles with an "Oh Quentin" and then hugs him. He tells her how she's the "only woman who ever seemed to understand me" (something he's no doubt said to several women!) and they kiss. Upstairs, Jamison asks Rachel why she "went away" and Rachel says it wasn't her idea, just that "your father and I were fighting so much. We didn't want our anger at each other to affect you." Jamison says that his father "fights with everyone. Why?" Rachel answers that "Your father has some very strong opinions of how people should behave." Jamison answers "I know that. He's always telling me I'm doing things wrong. Uncle Quentin tells me when I do things right. Isn't that what a father is supposed to do? When I have a son, I'll tell him when he does something right." Rachel hugs Jamison and tells him that now that she's home, everything will be better. "You always belonged with me," she says. Jamison asks her if she's going to stay, and she says yes.

Rachel enters the drawing room and interrupts Beth and Quentin. Beth continues to clean for a moment and then leaves as Rachel smiles at Quentin. "Still the same old Quentin, I see," she says. Quentin asks her why she came back, and she answers "Isn't that obvious?" Quentin says "Don't tell me you think you're in Catherine's will?" Rachel says no, and that she wants no money from Edward. "I never wanted anything from Edward except...." Quentin finishes her thought and says "Except Jamison. You came here to take him away, to take him back to Boston with you." Rachel says that she intends to stay, since taking Jamison away would be "too disruptive" especially after what's happened in the family. Quentin says "A lot of things have happened in this family that I'd like to forget." Rachel turns to him and says "I haven't forgotten." Beth has stopped cleaning outside and is eavesdropping as she hears the rest. "What we did was wrong," Quentin says. Rachel says that it couldn't have been wrong considering the way Edward treated her, "and besides, Jamison prefers you as well." Quentin angrily says "Don't say that! Edward is the boy's father!" Rachel says "It's as if he also knew his mother belonged with a different man." Quentin says "That man can't be me. And if you came back here with that in mind, I suggest you leave right now." Beth, hearing all this outside, is shocked. She runs back towards the kitchen just as Quentin storms out of the room leaving Rachel alone.

Edward is sleeping and begins to dream. He dreams that Benjamin is sitting in the drawing room. There is fog around and some flashing lights. Edward runs into the room and says "Benjamin! I heard you scream! What's wrong? Benjamin stands and faces Edward with a strange smile, answering "Nothing is wrong, my brother. I have never felt better. I have a new strength, a new power. If only you could understand...." Edward says "What do you mean? I don't understand! What are you talking about?" Benjamin walks towards Edward and raises his hands - which are covered in blood. Edward, terrified, yells "Your hands! What have you done? What have you done?" Benjamin starts to laugh as Edward turns to run out of the room and runs into Kitty, who is raising a goblet, high above her head. "Don't leave us, dear Edward," she says. "Not until you have drunk from the power that flows within us all...." She tilts the goblet and blood pours out of it in front of Edward, who screams "What is happening? Stop! Stop!" Kitty and Benjamin both laugh as the blood pours and Edward wakes up with a start. He is breathing heavily, and then says to himself "Benjamin!" He runs out of his bedroom and to Benjamin's room - and finds the bed empty. "Benjamin!" Edward gasps. "Where are you?" We cut to Benjamin walking passively through the woods. He turns a corner, and then faces Kitty at the strange altar. "You have come to me as I commanded," she says. "Yes," he says with a smile. "I will do thy bidding." She smiles and raises a goblet. "You will drink from the power that flows with us...." Benjamin approaches the altar and takes the goblet. As he drinks, he spills enough down his cheeks for us to see that it's blood. Kitty smiles at him, and he gives her a bloody evil smile back.
