Episode 1455

Aired: Friday January 21, 1972

Keith Prentice's voiceover: Throughout the intrigues and adventures of Harrison Collins in the strange world of parallel time in the year 1897, time has stood still at present day Collinwood. Barnabas, Quentin and Angelique watched as Harrison entered the time vortex to return to his own world when a flash of light alerted them that his passage was not smooth. But their worries will be short lived, for to them, in a matter of seconds, many of their questions will be answered. But little do they know of the far reaching effects the fracture in the time vortex will have upon the Collinwood of 1972...."

From a shot of Barnabas, Quentin and Angelique watching the time vortex in the 1840 laboratory, we dissolve to Harrison in parallel time 1897. He's having a drink with Quentin and Benjamin in the drawing room. Quentin is laughing about what happened to Petofi. "Serves him right. Think of the loyal friends the man would have if he didn't insist on bullying people with those powers of his," Benjamin says. "In an odd way, I almost feel sorry for him, knowing what his future is now," Harrison says. "But I suppose you're right, Benjamin." Quentin tells Harrison he's too sentimental. Benjamin looks over the scimitar and says might look nice on display someplace in Collinwood. Quentin says he's not sure how Carl would feel about that because of its history. "If I were you, I'd get rid of it, or throw it up in the attic behind those old portraits. Let someone find it years from now and not realize the pain its caused." Harrison tells Quentin and Benjamin that "it's time I returned to my own world. But there is something you both need to know." They look at him a little surprised (but not much) when he adds "Valery is coming with me."

After the titles, Harrison says that they will leave "in the wee hours of the morning, since we will have to make our way from the east wing to the basement in the 1897 of my world." Quentin remarks "I hope there are no insomniacs in that Collinwood to catch you." Harrison says "I hope it's the one night of their lives where they sleep normal hours, if I know my ancestors. But in any case, Valery and I will then return to my own time. With her father gone, she felt she could leave here." Benjamin, sadly, asks "Is there any chance we would ever see either of you again?" Harrison says "I don't know. Perhaps. I still have this ring, after all, though I might not want to press my luck in altering what is the past to me. I may inadvertently cause damage." Benjamin agrees, though he adds "If saving our lives was damage, let there be more of it." Upstairs, Valery is going through her things and wondering what to take with her. Harrison enters and reminds her that "taking clothes would only help you if there's a costume party in my time. Your wardrobe will be quite different." Valery asks him what clothes look like, and he tells her that she needn't worry, since "everything will look flattering on you." Valery says she wants to take the jewelry her grandmother had given her, a few things of her father's, and "only her memories of Collinwood in this time. Is the house exactly the same in your world?" Harrison nods, and says "Somehow Collinwood never changes that much, no matter what century it is. Are you ready?" She says yes, and they kiss.

Harrison and Valery enter the parallel time room, carrying a small bag. Quentin and Benjamin arrive, and say their goodbyes to Valery. Benjamin wishes them both happiness, and Quentin reminds them to visit someday. Both Quentin and Benjamin shake hands with Harrison and wish him well. They walk into the hallway as Harrison raises his ring to his chin and takes Valery by the hand. As he says "Switch," Quentin and Benjamin watch as Harrison and Valery both vanish. "Remarkable," Benjamin says. Quentin looks at the empty room and says "Goodbye, Valery." We cut to the darkened empty room in regular time 1897. There is a storm outside (isn't there always?). Harrison reminds Valery they must be extremely careful not to disturb anything or talk to anyone as they sneak down into the basement laboratory "where the planks necessary to create the vortex are." They leave the room. As they start to come out towards the stairway, Harrison hears some voices and immediately stops. The doors of the drawing room open and Barnabas comes out. He walks across the room looking worried and then leaves. Harrison quips "Doesn't anyone ever sleep around here?" Valery sees him and says "Benjamin! There's a Benjamin in this time as well. There's something different about him, though..." Harrison tells her "Yes, I suppose there is. Now, quietly, down the stairs...." They head down the stairs and manage to get through the door beneath them without being seen. We cut to them coming down the stairs of the dusty 1840 laboratory. Harrison takes the planks from a pile in the corner and sets four of them in a square as Valery curiously looks around. "Whose laboratory was this?" Harrison says "Another Quentin Collins, who experimented in the 1840s with time travel in this world. His experiments are the basis of what I know how to do." Valery asks whatever happened to "that Quentin," and Harrison says "Well, originally the story is not a happy one, but no one knows better than me how the tragedies of the past can be changed. I'll tell you all about it once we get home." Valery says "I suppose your world will now be my home as well." He holds her and says "Our home, Valery." They kiss, and then he raises the ring to his chin and says "Open..." The vortex begins to form in a swirling cloud before Valery's astonished eyes. "Show me my own world," Harrison says to the ring, and a hazy image begins to form. He smiles at Valery and leads her into the vision. We cut back to Barnabas, Quentin and Angelique. Quentin looks at Angelique and says "What just happened?" Angelique has a sly smile on her face as there is another flash in the vortex and suddenly Harrison and Valery become visible within it. Barnabas looks at the scene stunned. "Harrison!" he says. "Your clothes....and...Angelique! How is Angelique there?" Quentin says "Harrison! What happened? You only left a moment ago!" Valery looks at them fascinated, and Harrison says "A long story...this is Valery....and I love her." Suddenly behind Harrison and Valery is the world of 2045, where another Quentin smiles and waits. Harrison sees this and says "I'll explain it all to you....I don't suppose you mind waiting seventy years or so?" Quentin laughs a little while Barnabas looks at Angelique, who is still smiling as she nods goodbye to Harrison. Harrison smiles back and says "Thank you" before he and Valery step towards the other Quentin and the vortex closes and vanishes. Barnabas is still dealing with what he saw when Quentin looks at Angelique and says "I don't suppose you can explain it to me now. I hate the idea of waiting all that time." Angelique says "I only wished him happiness. The rest was up to him." Barnabas asks "I wonder what happened to him. Those clothes looked Victorian to me. I wonder what other changes in time he made and what effects they have had." Quentin says "If they're changes in our time, we're sure to notice them. I could use a brandy." (There's a surprise). Barnabas says he could use one as well, and leads Angelique upstairs after Quentin. We pan over towards the spot where the vortex was, and we see a strange white light appear. It glows for a moment, but then vanishes.

Upstairs, Angelique asks Barnabas where Liz and Alan are spending their honeymoon, and Barnabas tells her that they were planning on going to France, Italy and England. "She asked me if there were any old friends of mine to look up in England," Barnabas adds. "It was a nervous moment, but I think I handled it well." They join Quentin in the drawing room, who is having a drink and looking thoughtful. Angelique asks him what's on his mind, and he says nothing, but then Barnabas says "You don't have to hide it, Quentin. I saw how much Joanna Slater resembles Beth Chavez." Quentin says he hadn't noticed, but then laughs and says "I guess it is rather obvious, isn't it?" Barnabas remarks that "there's something familiar about Lori as well. I forgot who said there are only twelve types of faces in this world, but they certainly seem to have been right." Quentin answers "Or they seem to have spent a lot of time in Collinsport. Joanna and Lori have both gone back to Boston." Concerned, Angelique says "For good?" Quentin says "That's why I'm sitting here thinking....I don't know. They said something about wanting to be closer to their father once he gets back here, but then again, I'm not so sure about how I feel about them being here. I don't know, some sort of sixth sense I have makes me nervous about it." Angelique tells Quentin he's "an eternal bachelor with a bachelor's worries." Julia enters the room and asks if Harrison has left. Barnabas says yes, and Julia says that she's very concerned about Maggie. Barnabas says "Yes. You can only imagine my fear when she arrived at Liz's wedding in that dress... and it had a horrible effect on Sarah as well." Julia says that she tried hypnotizing Maggie, but each time, the same "false memory" returned. Barnabas says he doesn't know what to do, and wonders if Maggie should return to Windcliff. As he wonders, Maggie comes downstairs and stops in front of Barnabas' portrait. As she looks at it, she hears the melody from Josette's music box and says "My love....you are my love...."

Julia sees Maggie has come downstairs and rushes to her, telling her she needs rest. Maggie says "No, I must see my love," and when she sees Barnabas, she breaks free of Julia and runs to him. She hugs him, but he cannot respond as Angelique watches. When Maggie notices his distance, she backs away and says "Why do you not hold me close when I have returned to you? Why?" Barnabas is speechless as Maggie looks at Angelique and suddenly fills with fury. "You!" she growls, and lunges for Angelique's throat. Angelique backs away as Julia grabs Maggie. "I'll sedate her!" Julia says. As Julia prepares the needle, Maggie hisses "You will pay for your crimes, handmaiden!" Angelique is trembling as Maggie goes under from Julia's needle. Quentin tells Julia he'll help her get Maggie upstairs. Barnabas asks Angelique if she's all right, and Angelique says she's fine, just a little shaken. "But I can't help feeling that we shall never escape our past," she adds. "We've both caused too many people too much pain. What if Maggie's right? What if we have to pay for what we've done?" Barnabas looks at her somberly. "We have to forget about what has gone before us." Barnabas says, holding her. "Harrison gave us back our future. We must put the past to rest somehow. We must!" He holds her as she sobs. We dissolve back to the downstairs laboratory, where the white glowing light suddenly returns where the vortex had been. It passes near the old rickety and dusty desk in the laboratory, and as it touches the corner, that corner and that corner alone suddenly becomes shiny and new again before the light vanishes....
