Lara Parker's voiceover: "Collinwood, in the present time. Though Harrison Collins had spent weeks in the strange parallel world of 1897, only moments had passed here for Barnabas, Quentin and Angelique. They are still recovering from their battle with the forces of evil who sought to destroy all who live in the great house. But now, in what would seem like happier times with the recent marriage of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard to Alan Slater, the marriage of Barnabas Collins to his one time enemy Angelique must struggle against the painful memories of things gone past..."
Julia is using the medallion to hypnotize Maggie in her room. Julia tells her to forget everything Nicholas Blair did to her, and that her name is Maggie Evans. Maggie repeats "Maggie Evans...Maggie Evans...." but then looks around the room a moment before getting up off the bed and walking to the wall near the fireplace. Julia asks her what she's doing and tells her lie down, but Maggie trips a lever and the wall opens. "This is how I escaped to meet him..." she says. Julia asks her where the passage leads to and how she knew it was there. Maggie says "He came for me. He will come again, he will!" Julia closes the wall and leads Maggie back to bed, telling her "Maggie, you must lie down and concentrate on the medallion!" Maggie angrily protests, yelling "Stop calling me that silly name! My name is Josette DuPres!" Julia doesn't know what to do.
After the titles, Julia comes to the old house and finds Angelique there. She tells Angelique that Maggie has been sedated, but that "the situation with her is far worse than I thought." Angelique asks Julia why she cannot "simply erase her memory as you did before," and Julia answers that something Nicholas must have done affected Maggie's mind very differently than just stirring her memories of what Barnabas did to her years earlier. Angelique asks Julia what Barnabas did, and Julia responds "You'll have to ask him that. But he was a different man then. He was a man who had been tortured under your curse for nearly 200 years when he first saw Maggie Evans and damaged her so...." Angelique feels awful about this, and tells Julia that "there must be some sort of answer you can come up with besides sedating her all the time!" Julia says she has no idea what to do, since "Maggie is convinced she IS Josette. It's as if Josette's spirit has taken her over, with a complete memory as to what happened in 1795." Angelique frets that such revelations could "tear me and Barnabas apart. It will all be too painful to live through again." Julia seems to have mixed feelings about this possibility. Barnabas enters the house and tells Julia and Angelique that he left Sarah with David. "David is somewhat older than her now, but he agreed to take her into the town anyway." He wonders why Angelique is so upset, and Julia tells Barnabas about Maggie. Barnabas begs Julia to figure out an answer, since "locking her away at Windcliff is so unfair... it's as if I've stolen her entire life!" Julia says she'll try again, and leaves. Angelique asks Barnabas what he did to Maggie when he was freed in 1967. He tells her it's in the past and doesn't matter, but she insists that he tell her. He gets angry and storms upstairs.
Stokes comes out of his kitchen with a big tray of tea and cheese (which seems to comprise the Stokes diet along with the occasional sherry). Sebastian and Carolyn are there, studying some material on the history of psychics. Stokes asks Sebastian when he first discovered his own abilities, and he answers that he started having strange dreams when he was young, dreams he remembered in more and more detail. "Once," he continues, "I remembered dreaming of a particular room. It had a long green couch and a black vinyl chair. I dreamt of that same room three nights in a row and couldn't figure out why, I had never seen the room before. In my dream, I was in the room and my arm hurt for some reason. About a week later, I was climbing a tree and fell out of it, hitting my elbow on the ground and breaking my arm. When I was taken to the doctor's office, his waiting room had a long green couch and black vinyl chair. It was the room I had seen so often in my dreams. After that, I began to write all my dreams down in a journal. Eventually, I was able to manipulate them, or conjure them up during the daytime, only under tremendous strain." Carolyn tells him that he shouldn't be afraid of his abilities, and Stokes tells Carolyn that such experiences and discoveries "need not be confined to childhood. Indeed, many psychics do not discover their powers until they are well into adulthood." Carolyn wants to say something but hesitates, and Stokes asks her what's wrong. Carolyn says that she has been having dreams lately, not quite like Sebastian's, but still strange. Stokes asks her to describe them, and Carolyn says she dreams of Collinwood and walking through the doors of the drawing room, only it's not the same. Sebastian asks how it's different, and Carolyn says that the house and room are the same, but that there are different portraits on the walls and that the furniture seems older. "And the room was candlelit as well," she adds. Sebastian smiles and tells her that she's only dreaming of how she'd imagine Collinwood in the past since she's been reading so much of the family history lately. Stokes says this is most likely the reason, but Carolyn wonders why she's having such dreams night after night. She says she'll write them down as Sebastian did from now on.
Quentin returns to Collinwood with Joanna Slater. He asks her if he's gotten her interested in Collinsport after "walking all around the village." She says that the town is very interesting, and would be "quite a change from Boston. I'm not sure what Lori is in for." Quentin asks what changes her sister has in mind, and as they go into the drawing room, Joanna tells Quentin that Lori wishes to stay close to their father, and has "begun to relocate her work up here." Quentin asks what kind of work that is "that can be so easily mobile." Joanna answers "She does biomedical research, mostly. The college up here is associated with the university she works with in Boston. They didn't see a problem with her relocating her laboratory further north." Quentin pours himself a drink and asks what kind of medical research she does. Joanna says "I've never been sure. It's never been my specialty. Our father wanted us both to go into medicine, but I had no aptitude for it. I left medical school halfway through. I hate to admit it, but I've never been sure about what I really want to do." Quentin hands her a drink with a smile and says "Well, that certainly makes two of us." The front door opens and in walk Carolyn and Sebastian. Sebastian tells Carolyn that if she prefers using a tape recorder instead of a written journal to record her dreams upon waking, she can borrow his anytime. She smiles at him, but suddenly he looks towards the drawing room with a surprise. "Sebastian!" Joanna says, seeing him. "Joanna," he answers. "What are you doing here?" Joanna tells Sebastian how her father has married Carolyn's mother. Sebastian is amazed. "This world is too small," he says. Quentin, becoming Mr. Jealous, asks Joanna how she knows Sebastian. She laughs a little and says "Is it okay to tell them? I'd hate to reveal a secret of yours." Sebastian says "It's okay. I'm interested to see the reaction." Joanna announces "Sebastian and I both dropped out of medical school at the same time." Carolyn asks Sebastian "You once studied to be a doctor?" Sebastian answers "Yes, but I grew bored with it. And...I decided I'd rather do other things." Joanna tells Sebastian that she's thinking of moving to Collinwood, "since both my father and now my sister seem to be settling here." Sebastian looks a little concerned when he says "Lori is here as well?" Joanna says she will be, and that they should all get together. Sebastian says that will be fine, but nervously excuses himself and says goodnight. Carolyn and Quentin wonder why he reacted this way.
At the old house, Angelique confronts Barnabas in what was Josette's room. "Somehow I knew you'd come here, even after you'd locked it up. Too many things have happened in this room to be conveniently locked away in our memories." Barnabas tells her they should both leave "this cursed room," but Angelique says "No, Barnabas. We must stay. We must stay and face the past. If we are to be happy together, we must come together and face down our demons!' Barnabas says he has "far too many demons to face. One of them is under sedation at Collinwood now. If it wasn't for Julia.... I....I might have been destroyed years ago." Angelique says "You've always been so mysterious about your relationship with Julia. She's always there to protect you and I could never understand why." Barnabas tells her that he wants her to understand. "When I found myself here, in this time, with these people....I would have been totally lost without her." Angelique looks at him and says "Tell me. I must know everything." He hesitates a moment, but then takes her into his arms. "Promise me you won't hate me or hate yourself when I tell you. Promise me!" She promises, and he begins "My father and Ben put me into the coffin." We dissolve to the mausoleum room in 1795. Ben is placing chains around the coffin as we hear Barnabas/ continue "I had instructed my father to end the curse with a stake and hammer in the morning, but he could not bring himself to do it. He placed a silver cross inside the coffin and had Ben chain it shut." We fade to the inside of the coffin, where Barnabas lies with eyes closed in darkness. "It was a curious prison...not quite asleep yet not quite awake...the years going by without my having any sense of the time passing...only the longing for all I had lost....and the never ending loneliness of that dark tomb....until after what had seemed like an eternity had passed, I heard something..." We hear the sounds of the chains being hammered and moved from inside the coffin. When we hear the sound of the chains sliding off the coffin and falling to the floor, Barnabas' eyes suddenly open. "Something had awakened me...." we hear him say....
