Episode 1323

Aired: Wednesday July 21, 1971

Keith Prentice's voiceover: "A new day has dawned at Collinwood, and there is a new presence at the great house, a relative from New York who has grown interested in Barnabas Collins after hearing of his eccentricities. Even as Barnabas guards his secrets, the curiosity of this newfound Collins relative pale in comparison to the more pressing concern of dealing with the angry spirits of the past that have come back to haunt him and his new bride...."

Barnabas enters the foyer of Collinwood and hangs his cape up. Carolyn comes downstairs and says hello. Barnabas asks if Julia is awake. Carolyn looks surprised, and asks Barnabas "Didn't you know?" "Know what?" Barnabas asks. "She left late last night," Carolyn answers. Barnabas can't believe it as Carolyn adds "She's gone, Barnabas."

After the titles, Barnabas asks Carolyn why Julia left "so suddenly." (And obviously Carolyn can't answer that this story arc was set up because Grayson Hall finally got the vacation she'd asked Dan Curtis for after working steadily on the show for years! ;-) CDT) Carolyn says she doesn't know why. As Barnabas mulls this over, Carolyn says "Oh Barnabas! We have a visitor at Collinwood you must meet!" Barnabas asks who, and Carolyn tells him about their New York cousin Harrison, who has arrived. "Really?" says Barnabas. "I would very much like to meet him." Carolyn says he should be down "any time now" and asks Barnabas if he'd like to join her for coffee. He says thanks, and as she exits towards the kitchen, we hear Barnabas thinking "A cousin from New York... he must be a descendant of that Quentin and Tad from 1840. Perhaps he would know more about Daphne, if he knew about his own family... Quentin must know about this." Barnabas is tapped on the shoulder from behind, and he turns to see Harrison. "Barnabas Collins, I presume," Harrison says, looking rather serious.

"Yes, I am Barnabas Collins. You must be cousin Harrison, from New York," Barnabas says. Harrison nods and they shake hands rather uncomfortably. "I'm sorry, is there a problem?" Barnabas asks. "No, no problem. I guess I'm not used to spending a night here at Collinwood. I guess it's overwhelmed me a little," Harrison says. "I can understand that," Barnabas replies. "I can imagine how you heard about the great house here through the years. I had a similar experience when I first came here and met everyone a few years ago." Harrison asks "How many years have you been here, Barnabas?" Barnabas pauses a moment, and then answers "I came here from England four years ago. And now I cannot imagine living anywhere else." "Even with no telephone or electricity?" Harrison asks. Barnabas smiles. "So, you've heard about my love of authenticity at the old house. Most people don't understand my love of the past, Harrison. I suppose I find the lack of modern conveniences comforting in some way." Harrison smiles "Actually, I think I do understand how you feel." Roger comes downstairs, and remarks that he's glad Harrison and Barnabas have met each other, and also invites Barnabas to stay for breakfast. "And where's Angelique? Why didn't you bring her?" Roger asks. "Well, I had only intended to come here to talk to David," Barnabas asks. Roger says "David? Why did you want to see him?" Barnabas pauses (again) and answers "He had asked me about my ancestor's costume at the wedding, and I only wanted to discuss it with him a little." "David certainly has a great interest in his ancestors," Harrison says. Barnabas, looking a bit nervous, says "Yes, he does."

David comes downstairs and tells his father he's made good progress packing. Barnabas asks why, and Roger tells Barnabas that David has decided to go off to boarding school "for a short summer term, to see if he likes it." Harrison tells David that Barnabas had come over to talk to him, and David asks "What about?" but Barnabas tells him they can talk later, "after breakfast." Barnabas turns away and continues "Please wait for me to return, Roger. I'd like to go back to the old house and get Angelique." David says "I could go tell her, Barnabas. I've already eaten." Roger says "That's very kind of you, David," and starts to lead Barnabas inside. "Actually Barnabas, I'd like to talk to you along with Harrison, since you're such an expert on the family history. Let David go get Angelique." Barnabas says okay, and David goes out the door. At the old house, Angelique is coming downstairs and finds a note left by Barnabas next to the stairs. She picks it up, and we hear his voice "My love, I must speak to my cousin David at Collinwood, but I shall return. Your Barnabas." Angelique smiles as she reads, but suddenly from behind her a familiar voice says "Hello!" Angelique turns and sees Sarah standing in the living room.

"I remember you!" Sarah says to Angelique, who is shocked to see her. "You brought me tea when I was sick. It tasted funny but then I felt better." Angelique slowly moves towards Sarah and asks "Sarah, why have you come back?" "Come back?" Sarah asks. "Where did I go?" Angelique stops, and asks "Are you here because of Jeremiah? Are you here with him?" Sarah looks away from Angelique and says "Uncle Jeremiah is very sad. He shouldn't be here." Angelique gets a little excited at this prospect and says "Yes, Sarah. He shouldn't. Do you know how we can send him away?" "Away where?" asks Sarah. At this point, we cut to the outside of the old house, and David walks up to the door. He hears Angelique and Sarah talking, and stops himself from knocking. Instead, he moves to the window and peeks inside, watching Angelique and Sarah talking. "Do you know how we can help him to go where he won't be sad anymore?" Angelique asks. "I don't know. I only came here to tell you that he's very sad, and I don't want him to be sad." David quietly opens the door to the old house and silently steps inside. Sarah sees him and says "David! You shouldn't be here now!" Angelique looks behind her and sees David, and says "David! What are you doing here?" David answers "You've seen her! You were talking to her!" Before Angelique can answer, David turns back towards the living room, and Sarah is gone. Disappointed, he says "She's gone. I must have scared her away. I'm sorry, Angelique. But no one ever believes me when I tell them I see her. But you saw her! You know you did." Angelique looks at David and says "I don't know what I saw. This old house can play tricks on your eyes, David." David frowns. "I know you're not telling the truth," he says. Angelique says "That was a very rude thing to say, David. I'd hate to think what your father would say if he were here." David replies "He's not here. And I know you're not telling the truth. You saw her and I heard you talking to her." Angelique tells David they better go back to Collinwood and get his father, but David stands firm and says "I know who she is." Angelique gets a little pale at this statement.
