After a replay of Tuesday's close and the titles, Julia insists that Barnabas will "always" need her, and Angelique tells her that "It's my job to protect him now. You must understand that." Julia counters that "without professional medical attention, Maggie could remain like this the rest of her life. She could think of herself as Josette DuPres, exposing Barnabas and you to everyone." Angelique snaps "And you as well. Barnabas has told me everything about what has happened since you came here. Solving the problem of Maggie would mean solving a problem for you as well. What would happen to your career if people discovered what you had been protecting, even abetting?" Julia turns away and becomes silent. "No, Julia, we shall handle this my way!" Julia gasps "Your way? You don't mean...." Angelique shakes her head. "No one needs to die, Julia. But my powers may be more effective than your science." Julia reminds Angelique that Barnabas does not want her to use her powers, since they might further draw her "into the influence of the evils that drove Nicholas and Judah Zachary." Angelique says "I can control that influence. And I'm using these powers to benefit others. Leave this room." Julia protests, but Angelique insists that she leave, and tells her not to tell Barnabas of their conversation. Julia raises an eyebrow at that suggestion before she leaves. Angelique looks Maggie over and then looks towards the fire in the fireplace. "Maggie Evans...." she says. "I call upon your spirit to re-emerge from the darkness....I call upon you to gain control over your own mind once again...I banish the memories and spirit of Josette DuPres from your consciousness.....you shall be free of Josette....and at long last, so shall I!" Angelique turns back to Maggie who stirs in her sleep and then wakes up. She looks at Angelique strangely while Angelique waits.
"What are you doing here?" Maggie says. "You weren't feeling well and I came to check on you," Angelique says. Maggie looks around nervously. "The last thing I remember is leaving this house....to go see Nicholas." Angelique smiles, and tells Maggie that she had fainted in the woods and had been brought back to Collinwood. "You were having awful nightmares and from some sort of fever," Angelique fibs. "Julia has been taking care of you." Maggie apologizes for being such a bother, and thanks Angelique for being so concerned. "I don't know if I've ever met you," Maggie says. "You seem a little familiar to me though...." Angelique tells Maggie that she's Barnabas' wife. Maggie is surprised to learn that Barnabas is married. Angelique tells Maggie that many things have happened since she returned from Windcliff, and tells her to rest. After Angelique leaves, Maggie starts to fall back asleep, but looks confused. "His wife....why does that sound wrong?" she says to herself. We cut to an apartment being moved into. Lori Slater lugs in a heavy suitcase, followed by Joanna carrying a box. "These are certainly cozy surroundings," Joanna says. Lori remarks how much more space she gets for her money in Collinsport versus Boston. "And that applies to the laboratory as well. With the money I'll save, I'm hoping my research will go faster." Joanna asks Lori if their father is aware of the kind of research she's doing, and Lori says no. "He's too old fashioned," she adds. "I was able to convince the university, however." Joanna tells Lori that their father would "accuse her of trying to play God." Lori thinks this over, but says that "if I'm right, the contribution to science could be immeasurable." There is a knock at the door, and Lori answers it, wondering who it could be. Standing in the doorway is a smiling young man with flowers (James Storm). Lori gasps and says "You!"
"May I come in?" he says. Lori asks him how he found her. He answers that he knew she had left Boston, and figured she had followed her father "north to this fascinating little town." He says hello to Joanna, who answers "Hello, Brian." Lori snaps "So, you decided to follow me as well?" Brian looks the place over and says "Looks like you're settling here. Have you decided to give up on your project?" Lori smirks and says "No, though I'm sure you'd love to hear otherwise. At least up here you won't be able to steal any more of my ideas." He snickers and answers "Is that any way to greet an old friend? I missed you after traveling as far away as I did." Joanna says she'll leave the two of them alone, but Lori insists that she stay. "I did bring you a housewarming gift," Brian says, handing Lori the flowers. Lori doesn't take them, so he hands them to Joanna. "Well, in that case, they can be a gift for your lovely sister instead." Joanna takes them and tries to hide a smile from her sister. "I didn't think you'd ever come back to America," Lori says. Brian laughs a little and says "Oh yes, I'm sure you were hoping that, at least. I know you'd never want to share any credit for whatever great discoveries you find with me. Never mind that I inspired the research in the first place, hmmm? And to be quite honest with you, I probably would have eventually come to this town regardless of your presence here." Lori says she can't think of a reason why that would be so, and Brian answers with a snicker "Precisely, my dear. You can't think of the reason." He says good day and leaves. Joanna looks over the flowers and asks Lori if she thinks that means Brian will be staying in Collinwood. Lori looks worried and says she hopes not. "Brian Miller has been a thorn in my side for too many years," she adds.
Angelique returns to the old house and finds Julia talking to Barnabas. Angelique tells Julia that Maggie has awoken, and Julia asks "What happened? How is she?" Angelique says she is fine, and "seems to be Maggie again." Julia asks "What did you do?" Angelique only says "I did what was necessary. Perhaps you should see to your patient." Barnabas tells Julia goodbye, and says that he must talk to Angelique alone. Julia leaves, and Angelique snaps "What did she tell you? Has she tried to poison your mind against me again?" Barnabas says she did "nothing of the kind" and then asks Angelique point-blank "Did you cast a spell on Maggie?" Angelique turns away and says "What does it matter if she's back to being herself again? If she no longer has Josette's memories, they are no longer there to haunt us." Barnabas spins her around and angrily asks "Did you cast a spell on her?" Angelique says "Yes! I did! Are you happy now that I told you? I did it for you, I did it to protect you!" Barnabas grumbles. Angelique continues "Julia should mind her own business. She is also being protected here. What would happen to her if the truth were to come out?" Barnabas angrily answers that Julia is only interested in protecting him. Angelique replies that "that is precisely what I am doing! I am protecting you the best way I know how." Barnabas snaps that "a human would use human means. The best way you know how is no longer human!" Angelique tells Barnabas that "You say I'm no longer human? I'm a woman still in love with you. I've always been in love with you!" Barnabas answers "Those powers came from evil and can have no good effect." Angelique protests "Tell that to Sarah, who lives now because of those powers!" Barnabas snaps "She died in the first place because of them!" Angelique breaks down into tears and runs upstairs. Barnabas calls to her "Angelique! Angelique!"
