Episode 1459

Aired: Thursday January 27, 1972

Alexandra Moltke's voiceover: "My name is Victoria Winters. In the long strange journey that has been my life, many different and often terrifying turns have been taken. And now, in present day Collinwood, I have discovered my true identity as the daughter of the mistress of the great house. While this has given me a true home, it has also drawn me further into the intrigue surrounding the Collins family, which now unknowingly faces different forces of evil gathering around it...."

Barnabas nervously paces around the fountain when Vicky appears. He thanks her for meeting him, and she asks why he sounded so worried. He tells her that Angelique has been using her powers again, and how it led to an "awful argument." Vicky asks why he's telling her, and he says "Because I want you to talk to her. Maybe you can make her understand why she must renounce the powers Nicholas gave her." Vicky asks why her instead of Julia, and Barnabas answers that he thinks she needs to hear it from "someone else."

After the titles, Roger comes through the front door and hangs his coat up. He enters the drawing room and finds Quentin there reading. "Well, it certainly seems quiet around here for once," Roger says. Quentin tells Roger that Carolyn is upstairs studying and he has no idea where David is. Roger starts looking over papers on the desk and remarks how he wishes the business could be as quiet, "but with my sister's insistence she still be consulted on everything, even when she's on honeymoon in Europe... well, I think the fine people at the telegraph office and I are on a first name basis by now." Roger pours himself a drink and continues. "Though I did manage a lucky break today. I got a call from my lawyers about the old abandoned MacGruder house on the property. It seems I may have a buyer for it." Quentin thinks a moment. "The old MacGruder place...that's the house near the edge of the estate, isn't it?" Roger nods. "Yes, been part of the estate for almost a hundred years, though I don't think anyone has lived there in as long. I guess someone wants their privacy, but I'm not one to ask questions when offered the kind of money I was told about. I wired Liz and she agreed we should make the deal before the poor man actually sees the place." Quentin laughs and says "Roger, you're all heart!" Roger scoffs, and says he understands the buyer is interested in fixing the place up, and will be over to Collinwood that evening to "get the necessary paperwork going." Vicky comes back inside and Roger asks her where David is. Vicky says she's not sure, and Roger asks her if she could look after David "until Maggie is feeling better. I know you're part of the family now for real, but I really would appreciate it." Vicky smiles and says she'd be happy to. She only came back to Collinwood to get her coat before going to the old house. Roger asks if David is there, and Vicky says she doesn't know, but that she needs to talk to Angelique "about something." Quentin wonders what this might be when there is a knock at the door. Roger says "That must be my buyer." He opens the door and greets Brian Miller, who enters with a smile. "So, this is the magnificent Collinwood I've heard so much about." Vicky and Quentin look him over as he shakes Roger's hand.

Brian signs some papers with Roger while discussing how "perfect" the old MacGruder place will be for him. "I must admit, I find that unusual," Roger says. "I enjoy fixing up my surroundings," Brian answers. "And there should be enough space for my purposes." Quentin asks Brian what "line" he is in, and Brian says "I do research, mostly. Scientific research. I'm connected with a university in Boston, but I grew tired of city life. I can easily pursue my work up here." Quentin says that Collinsport seems like an "odd choice," but Brian answers "Some of my old colleagues have relocated here, so why not me? In case I need to consult with them, they're right here. I believe you know one of them, Lori Slater?" Quentin says yes, and that Lori's father has married into the Collins family recently. Brian says "Yes, Lori and I used to be partners of sorts working at the medical school. But her experiments took her in one direction and mine in another. It's the usual story in that field. Between you and me, as competitive as Lori and I can be, I must admit I may need her help still. This influenced my choice of location." Brian notices Quentin looking at him, and asks "You're looking at me as if you know me, Mr. Collins. Have we met before?" Quentin says "No, you remind me of someone, however." Brian laughs and says "Well, I've heard that we each have a double in this world. Perhaps you met mine. I hope you found him to be a good man." Quentin says "Well, his goodness was certainly open to debate." Vicky asks Brian if he's planning on working with the local university as well, and Brian answers "Oh yes, Miss Winters. I plan to take full advantage of the resources there." He looks over the papers and says "Until the money is wired from my Boston bank, I suppose the place isn't really mine, but I don't suppose you'd mind if I began to at least move some equipment in there, Roger?" Roger answers "As far as I'm concerned, you can move in altogether if you want. The place has been empty for years." Brian finds this excellent, and begins to say goodnight. Carolyn comes downstairs as Brian is walking out. She looks at him a moment and he smiles at her. Roger introduces her, and she says hello. He seems smitten by her and kisses her hand. "I'm very pleased to meet you, Carolyn," he says. As she stands next to Vicky, Brian remarks "How delightful that such a grand old estate still contains such exquisite beauty. I must be going, I bid you all goodnight." After he leaves, Carolyn tells Vicky "What a charmer! Who is he?" Roger says "He just bought the old MacGruder place at the edge of the estate." Carolyn thinks a moment and says "The MacGruder place? You mean Rose Cottage?" They all look at Carolyn wondering what she means. "Rose Cottage? What is Rose Cottage?" Quentin asks. "It's what the MacGruder place used to be called," Carolyn answers. "But how do I know that?" Quentin says "Perhaps it's the effect of Mr. Miller's charms." Carolyn wonders.

Angelique is sitting alone in an upstairs old house room upset when there is a knock at the door. Vicky calls from outside and asks to be let in. Angelique lets her in, and says "I suppose you're here because Barnabas or Julia sent you." Vicky says that it was Barnabas, and he only did it because "he's concerned about you." Angelique says that Barnabas doesn't understand her, and that "there's always a part of him that will hate me. I don't know if any kind of love can overcome that, Vicky." Vicky tells her that there "must be" or else he wouldn't be concerned enough to ask her to help. "I suppose you want to help by telling me to renounce my powers," Angelique says. Vicky says that "those powers corrupted you before. They twisted your emotions into jealousy and bitterness and hatred. Barnabas is afraid that would happen again. You would no longer be the Angelique he loves!" Angelique looks in the mirror. "Without those powers, I would no longer be the Angelique he loves either. I've seen it, Vicky. I was shown the vision of reverting to my true age...without those powers, I will become old. I will be ugly and repulsive. Don't you see? My powers can keep me like this, they can keep me the way Barnabas loves me." Vicky is amazed. "Growing old is part of life, it's part of being human!" she protests. "It's a part of being human I can't face," Angelique snaps. "Perhaps it's why I made Barnabas the way he was as well....I don't know. I only know I don't want to face losing him!" Vicky tells her that if she continues to use her powers, she will lose Barnabas. Angelique says "I've used them for good! I used them to fight Nicholas, I used them to help Sarah...I....." Vicky says "Sooner or later, they will corrupt your soul." Angelique looks away from Vicky and says "You don't understand." Vicky protests "I DO understand!" (Hey, sooner or later it had to happen) Angelique says "No, Vicky. Think about it. Either way, I'm going to lose him." Vicky doesn't know what to say.

Carolyn sits in the drawing room, thinking. Quentin comes in and asks her why she's still up so late. Carolyn says she's still wondering why she knows to call the MacGruder place "Rose Cottage," and asks Quentin if he's sure he's never heard the term. He says no. "I've been having such strange dreams lately too...of wandering through this house, only it's different inside." Quentin asks her how it's different, and Carolyn answers "It seems older, yet new. The furniture is different. The lights are candles. I can't help thinking I'm dreaming of the house in some earlier time." Quentin says "With all the constant talk of the past and delving into the family history, it's certainly no surprise you'd be having those dreams. Perhaps Harrison mentioned Rose Cottage to you when he was reading through all the family histories." Carolyn says "Perhaps, but I can't be sure. Professor Stokes told me to write down my dreams and discuss them with him and maybe even Sebastian. Sebastian thinks they could be the beginnings of psychic visions." Quentin smiles and says "So, you're telling me you think you're suddenly becoming a psychic at this point in your life?" Carolyn says she's not sure, but "I must admit I had a strange feeling meeting Mr. Miller earlier tonight." Quentin said he had a strange feeling as well, only it wasn't psychic. "I'd like to know more about his connection with Lori Slater. Perhaps Joanna can tell me." Carolyn only says that she felt that they would all be seeing much more of Mr. Miller even if he chose to live in such an out of the way place. In Rose Cottage, Brian opens a locked metal door and starts down some steps. In a brick basement, he unpacks iron bars and begins to use a wrench and a screwdriver to build a large metal cage attached to the walls.
