Episode 1461

Aired: Monday January 31, 1972

In a replay of Friday's close, Brian Miller walks down a corridor and unlocks the metal door before going downstairs. As he walks through the basement, he says "It seems everyone questions my approach to dealing with the problems of life and death. If only they knew what sort of secrets I had in my possession...." He approaches the cage and we see a tired man dressed in rags sitting inside. Brian continues "Isn't that right, Mr. Jennings?" The man in the cage looks up, and we see it's Chris Jennings (Don Briscoe), looking out of breath and haggard.

After the titles, Chris tells Miller he's "insane" and demands to know why "you are holding me here." Miller snaps "We both know the answer to that, Mr. Jennings. By chance I discovered your secret, and I believe we may be able to help each other." Chris holds his head and says "You drugged me somehow.... lured me to that bar in Boston by blackmailing me, and you put something in my drink! Where's my sister? Where's Sabrina?" Miller tells Chris "I have no idea, and I do not care. No doubt they think you've run off after becoming the wolf, or perhaps they even think you're dead. I doubt they'll search for you. In the meantime, you are at my disposal." Chris tells him that "Do you really think these bars will hold me once I change into that monster?" Miller says he's "quite confident" of the cage, and after walking over to a laboratory table with some equipment spread out, says "You really won't have the chance to do much damage anyway, not after I use this." Miller picks up what looks like a rifle. Chris, shocked, says "You intend to kill me? What will that prove? How will we help each other then?" Miller tells Chris to calm down, and that it's only a tranquilizer gun "used on larger animals. It can immobilize a bull elephant. I'm sure it can handle you. And once you are unconscious in your, shall we say, alter ego, I can get what I need." Growing curious, Chris asks what Miller is after. Miller answers "I need to see your blood after the transformation. By comparing it to your normal human blood, I may be able to isolate the element that causes the metamorphosis." Thinking a moment, Chris asks if there is such an element, "will eliminating it from my blood cure me?" Miller says he's not sure, "and honestly, that's the least of my concerns. I'm much more interested in isolating that cell and growing it under laboratory conditions. You see, Mr. Jennings, the strength and power contained in that cell may hold the key to immortality, if I read my legends of lycanthropy correctly." Jennings looks at Miller a moment and says "You ARE crazy!" He rattles the bars and demands to be let out. Miller laughs and tells him that "I've researched the effects of almost every strange herb known to alchemists through the ages. I'm convinced all I need is the blood of a true werewolf to prove my theory!"

Maggie is having coffee at Collinwood with Vicky. Vicky tells her she's glad she's feeling better after "all that she's been through." Maggie remarks that "I doubt anyone could understand what I have been through... though I must admit, you come the closest." Vicky wonders what she means by that. Maggie looks out the window and says "After the sensation of falling, falling....the sound of the waves...then suddenly finding yourself with Harrison..." Vicky says "Excuse me?" wondering how Maggie knows anything about this. Maggie turns to her and blinks. "I'm sorry, what did you say?" Vicky repeats that Maggie has been through a lot, but Maggie tells Vicky "Hey, remember? I'm the tough one. I can live through anything, I suppose. But what about you? Where have you been these past years before returning to Collinwood?" Vicky is not quite sure what to make of Maggie's behavior. Upstairs, David and Sarah are playing a game. David says "Candy." Sarah says "Chocolate." David says she's right, and she claps. Roger enters and asks them what they're doing. "It's a new game," Sarah says. "David thinks of a word, and then gives me other words as hints. I have to figure out what his word is. Then it's my turn." Roger nods, and says "Well, let's hope this word game proves more popular around here than all that rubbish about ghosts and goblins." Roger tells Sarah she should be getting back to the old house, and that he'd like to "talk business" with David. David tells Sarah he'll see her tomorrow. Roger asks David if he minds "playing with someone so much younger than you." David says it's okay, and that "I feel like I've known her a while anyway." Roger tells David "Now that you are growing up, I think you ought to spend more time at the cannery. It's time you started learning about the family business. I'm not sure how your cousins Carolyn and Vicky feel about it all, but I'd like you to get your feet wet. What do you say?" David says he'd like that. Roger is pleased.

Vicky asks Maggie how she wants to handle the governess duties. "Now that David is older, the lessons will be more complicated." Maggie says she doesn't mind if Vicky looks after David "at least until he makes his mind up about school. I'd rather...." Vicky asks what, and Maggie says "I'd rather work with Sarah. I feel a bond with her in a way... she's new here, unfamiliar with some things..." Vicky asks Maggie if she's feeling "unfamiliar" with Collinwood. Maggie says it's only because she's been gone so long. "Besides, Sarah's lessons are so much less advanced. I'd feel more comfortable with them." Vicky says that will be fine, and she's sure Barnabas and Angelique would agree. Maggie seems to think a moment when she hears Angelique's name. David comes downstairs and tells Vicky that his father asked him to help work in the cannery. Vicky says that they can figure out how to reschedule his other studies if he does that. Maggie excuses herself and says she'll go to the old house and tell Sarah the news. She closes the drawing room doors behind her and stops at Barnabas' portrait. "Oh yes...Sarah and I have much in common...." she says quietly before leaving.

Lori and Quentin enter Collinwood. Quentin remarks how "lucky" he is that "I get taken out to dinner by both of the beautiful Slater sisters. So, after spending an evening with me, do I get your approval to go on seeing Joanna?" Lori smirks, and says "Something tells me you don't bother getting approval from anyone." Quentin smiles and says "I'll drink to that" as he invites her into the drawing room. David is reading inside, and says hello to them. Quentin tells David he looks "fairly pleased with himself" and David tells Quentin how Roger wants him to help out "with the family business. I think father isn't going to treat me like a kid anymore." Quentin laughs a little and says that being treated like a kid can have its advantages. "You know what I mean. He's starting to talk to me, well, the way you do." Quentin tells David that he's done things to earn his father's respect, "something I always had problems doing, but I'd rather not get into that." Lori watches them and notices how David and Quentin get along. Lori says "How much time will you be spending at the cannery, David?" David says he doesn't know, and Lori says "Well, I ask because I had somewhat of an ulterior motive in having dinner with Quentin tonight." Quentin raises an eyebrow. "Oh?" he says. Lori tells David "I was going to try to get Quentin to help me convince you to work as my laboratory assistant. I heard you were interested in science. It would be a good experience for you, and you'd learn more than you would simply reading a textbook." David is intrigued by the idea, but isn't sure if he can do that, and the cannery and his normal studies. "I'll have to ask my father," he says, and then looks at Quentin "Unless you could convince him." Quentin says that perhaps Lori should do the convincing, though "Maybe if Vicky heard about this, she'd think it would be good for your education." Lori tells David they should go find Vicky then. "Well, maybe not now, it's getting pretty late," David says. He looks out the window and says "The moon has risen all the way up, too." Quentin looks at it with his drink in hand. Lori remarks what a pretty moon it is, and Quentin takes a drink before saying "It can be. It can be." We cut to Chris Jennings groaning in painful agony in his cage as Miller watches. Chris yells for Miller to "get out! get out!" but Miller only loads the tranquilizer gun and smiles. "No, Mr. Jennings. Not when I'm this close!" Chris begins to growl and holds up a hairy clawed hand....
