After a replay of Monday's close and the titles, Chris has completely transformed into the werewolf and begins to bang on the cage bars. He leaps up and grabs at them as Miller studies him in fascination. "Stand still, you magnificent beast!" Miller says as he aims the gun. We hear a pop and the werewolf grabs his shoulder and howls. He seems to reel for a moment, but does not go down. He begins to bang on the cage again, howling, as Miller frowns and readies reloading. Out in the woods, Lori is walking by herself. She hears Chris' howling at a distance and we hear her think "That noise...some wounded animal....what would it be doing out here?" Another howl, and she thinks "It's in the direction of Miller's place..." She gets a determined look and heads off in that direction. Back in the basement, Miller has reloaded his gun and fires again at Chris, who is sent back into a wall and falls to the ground. "It seems I underestimated your strength, my friend," Miller says. "I needed much more sedative than even for ten men....fascinating...." The werewolf passes out. Miller begins to ready the syringe for drawing the blood when he hears a noise upstairs. He immediately leaves the room and locks the iron door behind him before going slowly up the stairs to take a look. He peeks through and sees Lori snooping around outside. "Oh, Lori...." he thinks in a sneering voice. "Such keen hearing to locate Mr. Jennings' howls. Perhaps it's time I taught you a lesson..." He smirks and goes down a corridor as we cut to Lori coming up towards the front door. "The howling has stopped..." she thinks. "What sort of experiment must he be doing in there...." Suddenly she hears a different howl, followed by barks and growls. She turns, and a large angry doberman snarls at her. She yells in fright and begins to back away. The dog does not charge, but keeps barking. Lori carefully steps away, "Brian....he's protecting something....I'll have to come back here prepared...." The dog continues barking as we follow her back into the woods. We pan back to the house, and we see Miller standing where the dog was, laughing.
The next morning in the old house, Sarah answers the door and it's Maggie. "Are you feeling better?" Sarah asks her. Maggie says yes, and asks to come in. Sarah tells her that Barnabas and Angelique have gone into town. Maggie says "That's good. It will give us a chance to talk." Sarah says "What do you want to talk about, Josette?" Maggie sits next to Sarah and says "You shouldn't call me that. My name is Maggie." Sarah says "I know. I remember. But it's like you're also Josette, isn't it?" Maggie says "I want you to call me Maggie from now on. I'm going to be your governess. Would you like that?" Sarah says yes, but asks Maggie why she wants to be called Maggie "all the time." Maggie says "Well, I don't want anyone to know about Josette right now. That can be our secret." Sarah says she likes secrets, and then asks "Why did Angelique marry Barnabas and not you?" Maggie says "It's a long story, Sarah. But it's a story that isn't quite over yet..." Back at Collinwood, Julia is having coffee when she answers a knock at the door. Lori enters, and Julia tells her that Quentin isn't around. "Actually, I was here to see David," Lori says. "I wondered if he was still interested in becoming my lab assistant." Julia is interested in this idea, and says she hasn't seen David this morning. "What kind of work do you do?" Julia asks. Lori says "Oh, it's just some medical research." Julia becomes more interested, and reminds Lori that she is also a doctor. "What field do you specialize in?" Lori says she began as an endocrinologist, but then became "more fascinated with the role various glands play in aging." Julia gets more curious. Lori continues "It may be possible to prolong life by manipulating the functions of those things." Julia says "Perhaps. I suppose people have been searching for immortality since the beginning of time." Lori smiles and says "Perhaps science may help us discover those secrets someday." Julia and Lori seem to be sizing each other up when Lori adds. "There's something I suppose you're the best person to ask about." Julia wonders what that might be, and Lori says "I understand you're working on a history of the Collins family." Relieved, Julia says she is. Lori asks if she could see the family histories in the library. "Now that my father is a part of this family, and after talking to David, I've grown rather interested." Julia says she'll show Lori where they are, but seems to be wondering about her.
Barnabas and Angelique return home. Sarah is reading from a book and writing in a notebook. Barnabas asks her if Vicky was there, and Sarah says "No, Maggie came over." Angelique looks a little concerned, but then Sarah asks "Maggie told me she'll be my governess. I think Vicky wants to work with David because he's older than me now." Barnabas catches the remark and looks a little concerned, but before he can say anything, Sarah says "Where are mother and father? Why aren't they here now too?" Barnabas gets very concerned, and tells Sarah "Sarah, remember, your mother and father cannot be here. They were in England...and they're no longer here." Sarah says "Are they both dead?" Angelique says "Barnabas, perhaps I should handle this." Barnabas says "No, I can deal with it." He looks at Sarah and says "Yes, they are both dead. But you must remember that Angelique and I love you very much." Sarah looks at Angelique a moment and then back to Barnabas. "But I was dead, and so were you. And now we're both here. Why not mother and father?" Barnabas doesn't know what to say. We dissolve to Angelique closing an upstairs door and telling Barnabas that Sarah is napping. Barnabas says he doesn't know what to do. "I'm responsible for all of her confusions. It was my own selfishness and guilt that brought her to this place." Angelique tells him that he brought Sarah back because he loved her and "wanted to give her back the life that was taken from her." Barnabas says "This is why we both need Julia. Julia can erase the memories of the past from Sarah's mind and give her a clean start." Angelique disagrees, and says "Julia's science is foolhardy. We've already trusted Sarah to Julia's hypnotic brand of mind control and look at the results. Sarah spends time with David and Vicky who already know the truth, that's one thing, but what if she talks to others?" Barnabas says he doesn't know what to do, and Angelique says "I do." Barnabas understands immediately and says "A spell." Angelique nods. Barnabas frets.
Barnabas tells Angelique that "using a spell should be out of the question. Every time you resort to those powers, I have the feeling that Judah Zachary and Nicholas Blair are reaching out from beyond the grave to get hold of you again." Angelique says "They are both gone. And perhaps their reach only applies to spells cast in anger, spells to hurt, spells from jealousy." She takes Barnabas' hands and says "Don't you see? This will be a spell cast from love, one of caring for your sister. I know I can clear her mind." Barnabas says "Like you did Maggie?" Angelique drops his hands. "I had no other choice, she could have exposed us both." Barnabas grumbles about Angelique's "independent spirit, even after marriage," and Angelique says "Darling, we need not fight. Could you be with a woman that had no spirit of her own? Especially in these modern times?" Barnabas smiles at her, and answers "You know how I prefer the past in many ways." He moves closer to her. "Can you help Sarah?" Angelique says she can, and Barnabas says "Perhaps a spell cast in love shouldn't worry us then." They hug. Angelique enters Sarah's room with a steaming mug. Sarah sits up, and Angelique says "I've brought you some hot cocoa, Sarah. It will help you nap." Sarah thanks her, and says "I remember when you brought me soup when I was sick. Then I felt better." Angelique tells her to drink it. Sarah does as Barnabas enters and watches. Angelique takes the mug as Sarah falls asleep. Angelique puts her hand on Sarah's head and begins to chant "Sarah Collins....hear me in your dreams....everything from your past will fade as your dreams fade when you awake. You will only know Barnabas as your Uncle, and me as his wife. You will not remember living at Collinwood at any other time. Your place is here and now. Sleep, Sarah, sleep. You will remember nothing of your spiritual existence. Sleep. Sleep." Angelique lifts her hand as Sarah rolls over. Angelique tells Barnabas that when Sarah awakens, she'll only remember the story they fed her. Barnabas says he hopes Angelique is right. As they leave Sarah's room and enter the hallway, they bump into Maggie, who says she forgot to leave another book with Sarah. Barnabas says he'll give it to Sarah when she wakes up. Maggie and Angelique look at each other a moment. Angelique asks Maggie if that's all, since Sarah is napping. Maggie says "Yes, that's all." She smiles and says as long as Sarah is asleep, she'll take the opportunity to go into the village. Angelique smiles back as Maggie leaves. Barnabas watches her, and says "Perhaps you were right. Maggie seems herself again and has no memories of what she's been through." Angelique says "Always know that you can trust me," before kissing Barnabas. Maggie goes downstairs and takes a look around the old house living room. We hear her think "Keep thinking he is yours, Angelique....keep thinking I am a harmless governess named Maggie in this strange time...but all this....and Barnabas too.....will be mine!"
