Episode 1325

Aired: Friday July 23, 1971

After a replay of Thursday's close and the titles, Barnabas stands outside David's door and listens for a moment. Inside, David and Sarah are still talking, with Sarah saying "I can't tell you, David. You've just got to trust me." David says "I think I know why you came back this time, Sarah. But I've got to hear it from you so I can be sure." Sarah says "I've got to go now, David." Outside, Barnabas hears this and then hears David say "Sarah, no, don't go. Wait a minute!" Barnabas opens the door and sees David standing there alone, looking disappointed. David turns and sees Barnabas, and says "Barnabas!" Barnabas apologizes for startling David, and then starts to thank him for going to the old house to get Angelique. "That's not all you came to talk to me about though, is it Barnabas?" David says. Barnabas can't think of anything to say, and David continues "You know I've seen her, don't you?"

In the drawing room, Harrison returns to find Angelique sitting and reading. He remarks that Barnabas has been "a while" and "must have a wonderful rapport with David to talk so long." Angelique comments that Barnabas is "very fond" of David and enjoys his company. Harrison says he finds "Barnabas Collins a very interesting man." Angelique says she has always found him so as well. "It seems there's so much going on inside his mind," Harrison continues. "I wonder if a man like him is victim to mood swings, or...how did they once say it, 'bouts of melancholy?'" Angelique answers that she doesn't "know what he means by that." Harrison says that "It's just that I've known men like Barnabas, and sometimes they try to take on too much. Their behavior gets erratic or unsteady." Angelique replies that "Barnabas has never behaved that way at all. It seems you are not a very good judge of people upon early impressions, Harrison." Harrison laughs a little, and says "Perhaps not. Perhaps I tend to think too much and try to figure people out, instead of simply letting myself get to know them better" as he sits down next to Angelique. "Well, there's not much to know about me," she says. "Somehow I doubt that," Harrison says with a smile. "Something tells me you're more mysterious than you let on." Angelique stands up and says that she's "sorry to disappoint you." Harrison apologizes if he's offended her in any way, then muses "I'm sure most men always act like this around you, though. Something about a beautiful woman always turns my mind to mush." "Well, perhaps you will meet the right woman someday," Angelique says. "Perhaps I will," Harrison says with a strange smile.

In David's room, Barnabas is at first evasive, and David repeats "You know I've seen her. Angelique must have told you what happened." Barnabas says that Angelique told him what happened between her and David, but nothing else. David says that he wonders "where Sarah has been all this time. Why did she go away when she did, and why is she back now? Do you have any idea, Barnabas?" Barnabas starts to say "David, I know you were of great help to Quentin and Dr. Hoffman and I when Professor Anderson was here, but that doesn't always mean that you can trust what you think you see sometimes...." but David cuts him off. "You let me help you then, and I know what I saw. I know what I saw at Professor Anderson's house and what he did to my father and Carolyn. It started me thinking about a lot of things, Barnabas. I was very scared when my father and Carolyn were under Professor Anderson's control. He could make them do anything, and he was so evil. But they couldn't help themselves!" Barnabas says "Yes, I know, but that's all over now." David then says "When you first came here, I was scared of you too Barnabas. And that's when I first saw Sarah." Barnabas interrupts "David, you have no reason to be frightened of me." David answers "I know that now." He picks up something out of the toy chest and walks towards Barnabas. "When I was scared of you Sarah gave me this," David says. He opens his hands and shows Barnabas the wooden toy soldier. Barnabas sees it and gasps, taking it from David's hand. He forgets himself for a moment and smiles, lost in his memories, as he says "A member of the regiment...." David studies Barnabas' reaction and then says "Do you want it back?" Barnabas looks at him stunned.

Barnabas grasps for words and says "Did you find this at the old house?" David says "I told you, Sarah gave it to me, to protect me from you. I thought why that might be, and now I see I was right. I thought it was because it would remind you of who you are, who you really are." Barnabas sits down on the bed and says to himself "Who I really am..." David continues "When you first came here you were different than you are now, and you scared me. But then I remember how when I got back from Boston, right about the time that my father got married again, how you changed. You were happier, and nicer somehow. I didn't know why, but I figured that maybe I really had imagined everything, but then I saw how my father and Carolyn changed because of Professor Anderson, and then were all right later on. They didn't want to be evil, they couldn't help themselves. And I thought that maybe you were like that too, and that Sarah knew it. She knew it because she was Barnabas Collins sister. I looked that up in the family history." Barnabas looks at David as if a huge weight has been lifted from him and says "What did she say to you David? Please, I must know." David smiles and says "I can finally tell someone who will believe me! She said she's here to help someone, that was all. But maybe she's listening to us now, and now that she knows we had this talk, she'll appear to you." Barnabas says "Perhaps, yes, perhaps." "I won't tell anyone about our talk, Barnabas, don't worry. I won't even tell Quentin." David says. "Quentin....already knows," Barnabas says. "And it seems Quentin was right about you no longer thinking like a child. That means we have a gentleman's agreement, do you understand?" David smiles and nods. "I'll apologize to Angelique then, and you can tell her whatever you wish to later on then. Isn't that what a gentleman would do?" David asks. Barnabas says "Yes. That would be best." David says he'll go do that, and leaves the room. Barnabas sits alone in David's room and studies the wooden toy soldier in his hand. "Sarah...." he says softy before he begins to weep.
