Episode 1329

Aired: Thursday July 29, 1971

Thayer David's voiceover: "Collinwood is a place well known to be shrouded in mysteries, both in the past and in the present. One mystery concerns the identity of a young woman who Quentin Collins fears is but a mere ghost from the distant past. One other mystery is an angry ghost from the distant past who haunts his one time rival and his young bride. And, unknown to most at the great house, a newly arrived cousin may be most mysterious of all...."

Harrison enters the library and finds Quentin sitting and reading. He says hello and asks him what he's looking at. Quentin answers that he's only reading some of the family histories so that he can keep up with Stokes when they go on their trip. Harrison remarks that Carolyn has told him what an interesting man this Professor is, and Quentin says that "interesting is only the half of it." Harrison starts to say something to Quentin, but then changes his mind. Quentin asks him what he wanted to say, adding "Was it important? I must go down to the old house and see Barnabas before Stokes gets here." Harrison says "Barnabas. Of course. Oh, nothing, really. Forget I said anything. I was only coming here to look at some old books about this house." Quentin puts down the one he was reading and says that it was mostly about the mid 19th century. Harrison says that the house is older than that, so he will keep looking. Quentin leaves, taking an inquisitive look towards Harrison as he peruses the bookshelves.

After the titles, we are at the old house. Angelique lets Quentin in, and he asks her how married life is. She tries to say that she's happy, but she cannot hide that she is upset. He asks her what is wrong, and she says "Nothing, nothing really." Quentin says "I know you have no memory of knowing me because of the tricks time has played, but you must know that I can tell when you're lying." Angelique pulls away from him and says "Barnabas always says how determined you can be." Quentin says he's determined to help them if she'll tell him the truth. She says he wouldn't be able to help. Barnabas comes downstairs, and after a hello, Barnabas asks Angelique why she is upset. Angelique says "It's nothing, really." Barnabas says to Angelique that "we must tell him." Quentin asks what, and Barnabas tells him how Jeremiah has begun to haunt Collinwood. "It's only a matter of time before everyone sees him," Barnabas adds. "Are you worried about your secret?" Quentin asks. Barnabas nods, and says "Yes, but I must confess that David surprised me a great deal." Quentin asks him what he means, and Barnabas tells Quentin how David knows the truth, and how "he handled himself like a true gentleman." Quentin, in a mild panic, asks Barnabas if David knows the truth about him as well, and Barnabas answers "As far as I know, he does not. But judging from his reaction, I don't think you have anything to worry about. I believe David will always be our friend." Quentin says he hopes so. Barnabas tells Quentin that's not what he wanted to discuss anyway, and that he wants him to check on Harrison's "history" when he travels to New York with Stokes. Quentin asks why, and Barnabas says "I simply do not trust him for some reason." Angelique claims that Barnabas is jealous that Harrison has shown "affection" for her, and Barnabas does not deny this, but adds that Harrison's "evasiveness" has made him "uneasy." Quentin says he doesn't suspect Harrison has "evil motives" but finds him "rather a mystery."

Stokes arrives at Collinwood ready to take Quentin to the train station. Harrison, with a roll of paper under his arm. lets him in and introduces himself. They chat for a moment, Harrison asking Stokes what his specialty is "besides the history of Collinsport." Stokes answers that he has also specialized in anthropology, parapsychology and the occult. Harrison is impressed, adding "Do you believe in phenomena outside the sphere of ordinary science?" Stokes answers "Young man, I have seen such phenomena with my own eyes." Quentin comes downstairs, and Stokes asks Harrison what paper he is carrying. Harrison tells Stokes and Quentin that he was "studying the blueprints for Collinwood. I find the design of this house absolutely fascinating." Stokes asks Harrison if he has studied architecture, and Harrison says yes. "Where? At the New York Institute?" Stokes asks. "I know many professors in the field. Perhaps you may know of them..." Harrison cuts him off and says "I didn't mean to mislead you, Professor. I have only studied the subject on my own. It's sort of a hobby of mine." Stokes says he sees, and he and Quentin say goodbye and leave. Harrison takes the rolled up blueprint and heads upstairs. In the hallway, he unrolls the paper and begins to study it. We see him focus on a room at the lower level as we hear him think "Quentin's laboratory was here...." as he begins to trace his finger up a straight line on the blueprint while thinking "and following the line we should lead us....here..." as his finger reaches a room on an upper floor. He takes a look around, and then heads down the hallway. We cut to him walking down a dark dusty hallway which we recognize as the East Wing. He studies some of the closed doors, takes another look at the blueprint, and then arrives at a set of double doors. He opens it, and sees the empty and unused parallel time room. He smiles and puts down the blueprint on a table in the hallway before standing in front of the door. He raises his hand with the jeweled ring to his eye level, takes a deep breath, and simply says "Show me. Now." Right before his (and our) eyes, the room changes to parallel time - where it is a burned out abandoned mess from PT-Stokes fire. Harrison looks at the burned out room in amazement.

Harrison studies the burned out room in parallel time, and we hear him think "Of course....a direct line from the laboratory leads here. It seems right, to be in this condition, but I must be sure...." The sound of some footsteps interrupts his thinking. He raises the ring back to eye level and says "Return," and the room switches back to the empty normal time room. Harrison grabs the blueprint and asks "Who is there?" but gets no answer. The sound of footsteps gets louder as Harrison asks again "Hello? Who is that?" He turns around and is agape to see the ghost of Jeremiah standing before him.

Episode 1328

Aired: Wednesday July 28, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's cliffhanger and the titles, the chandelier is falling, but Alan grabs Roger and pulls him out of the way just in time. The chandelier smashes to the floor, and with the crash, the ghostly wind and laughter suddenly stop. Alan asks Roger if he is all right, and a shaken and out of breath Roger says "Yes, but barely....." Liz and Carolyn ask Roger if he is okay as Alan helps him stand up, and Roger looks at him and slowly says "Slater... you may have saved my life just now." Sebastian says that the chandelier must have been knocked loose by the "angry spirit." Liz asks him if he really thinks so, and as Alan leads Roger into the drawing room to get him a brandy, Sebastian says "Yes, and I also think that the angry spirit.... is a Collins."

Roger is sitting in the drawing room drinking a brandy as Alan is checking him over. Roger says he was a little bruised, but that the chandelier missed him. Liz breathes a sigh of relief, and Alan says he'll go upstairs and get Roger something for the bruise. Roger grabs him arm to stop him, and says "I've been very unfair to you since you came here, maybe even before that. I don't know what I can say or do to apologize or make it up to you." Alan pats Roger on the shoulder and says "Maybe we can just be friends the way we used to be." Roger smiles and says he can "certainly try to recapture their friendship." Alan tells Roger he really should get something for the bruises. Roger stands up and says he'll go upstairs to his room to lie down and that he'll be fine. Alan says he'll help him. After they leave, Liz says she's happy Roger wasn't hurt, and Carolyn adds that she "must also be happy that Roger and Alan might get along better now." Liz says yes, and that she hopes they really can be friends. Carolyn adds "Again. If they were once friends when Alan worked here, what happened to make Uncle Roger so angry?" Liz turns away from Carolyn and says "It was a long time ago. Your uncle was young, about David's age. I think he resented Alan for going away to medical school when he did." Carolyn asks "How did you feel, mother? Were you close to Alan then?" Liz gets evasive, and leaves the room, wanting to check on Roger. Carolyn looks at Sebastian and remarks on how her mother's reaction seemed odd.

Harrison is coming down the stairs when he sees the smashed chandelier in the middle of the foyer. He looks it over, wondering what happened, when Carolyn and Sebastian come out of the drawing room. He asks them what happened, and Carolyn says there's no time to explain, but that she and Sebastian will go find Willie Loomis at the old house to see if he can fix it. After they leave, Harrison looks in the drawing room and sees its empty, then glances up the stairs for a moment before smiling and exiting through the kitchen. We cut to Harrison coming down a dusty old staircase carefully. He moves out of the way of some cobwebs and reaches the bottom of the stairs. He is in a room that hasn't been occupied in a long time, but there is an old desk and chair in one corner with some dusty old books and papers on it. Harrison blows some dust off the desk and begins to look over the papers. He starts looking through the desk drawers as we hear him thinking "This must be it.... this is the right location...." He looks over to the side where there are some rotted old wood planks leaning against a wall. He moves some of them aside, and we see the remains of a single step from where a staircase used to be. Harrison smiles and we hear him think "Yes...." he goes back to the desk and opens a dusty book. Written at the top in old style handwriting are the words "Theories of Time Manipulation" signed "Quentin Collins, 1833." Harrison looks around and says to himself "Yes.....I have found your laboratory, Quentin Collins."

Harrison is reading through some of the books on Quentin's old desk and then begins to measure paces towards the pile of old rotted wood planks. He sweeps some dust off the floor with his shoes as he begins to survey a spot just in front of the remaining step. He looks it over for a moment, and then looks around the room deep in thought before taking one of the planks and placing it on the spot he has cleared. He steps back and begins to raise his hand with his jeweled ring when he hears footsteps off to the side. He quickly puts his hand down, and sees Daphne coming down the stairs. "Well, hello Miss Hopkins," he says. "It looks like you've caught me exploring the hidden corners of Collinwood." Daphne seems in a daze as she answers "Yes...." Harrison looks at her concerned, and asks her if she is all right. She says yes, and he asks her if she was looking for him. "No," she says. "Then you come down here often? I suppose you've had to find David hiding down here from time to time," he says. She says no, and then adds "I don't know why I've come here." Harrison asks her again if she's sure she's all right, and she only repeats that she has no idea why she came to "this part of the house." She starts to look around the room, and says "I don't know what it is about this room...." Harrison takes her by the hand and tells her that she'd better come back upstairs with him and "collect herself." She agrees, and he leads her out, taking a long last look at the spot he had cleared on the floor.

Episode 1327

Aired: Tuesday July 27, 1971

After a replay of Monday's close and the titles, Barnabas yells at Carolyn to "keep back" as Jeremiah turns to face Carolyn. Carolyn takes a step back, but then grabs the chain of her necklace and pulls out a silver ankh pendant and shines it at Jeremiah's ghost. Carolyn says "Return....return to whence you came....I hold the symbol of life....return....return..." and Jeremiah vanishes as the lights come on. Barnabas asks Angelique if she is all right, and then asks Carolyn "what did you do?" Carolyn takes a deep breath and says she can't believe it herself, since she only thought it was something out of the books Professor Stokes had given her. "My necklace has the ankh...." she begins, and Angelique finishes "...the ancient Egyptian symbol of life." Carolyn says "Yes, you're familiar with it?" Angelique says "A little." Carolyn explains how her books said that the spirits of the dead can often be repelled with symbols of life, "but I never thought it would really work. But it was the first thing I thought of!" Barnabas says that "No matter what, you did the right thing," and thanks her. Carolyn wonders why there would be a ghost haunting Collinwood. "Have you ever seen that ghost before?" she asks Barnabas and Angelique, and they both lie that they have not, and have "no idea" who it may have been. Carolyn says that she "must find out, in case it comes back." Barnabas and Angelique excuse themselves, and say goodnight as they head back to the old house. Carolyn thinks a moment, and then walks to the phone and calls Sebastian.

The next day, David is all packed and Roger is going to drive him to the train station. Roger asks him if he is going to miss Collinwood, and David says he will, but that "maybe it's time I spent a while away from here. Quentin has been a lot of places, and Harrison was telling me about how good it can be to travel around." Carolyn comes into David's room to say goodbye, and David says he will write "lots of letters home to everyone from school." Carolyn says she's sure that David will have a good time at school and will enjoy seeing Hallie Stokes again. The three leave the room, and as they come down the stairs to the foyer, Alan and Liz are waiting there to say their goodbyes. Alan shakes David's hand and wishes him luck, and Liz gives him a hug, saying she can't believe he looks "so grown up." Carolyn suddenly remembers something in her purse, and says "I almost forgot. I picked up your photographs in town earlier this morning." She hands him the envelope. Carolyn asks David if those were the pictures he claims he took of Sarah. David says yes, and then starts to look through them. He smiles and even laughs a little as he looks through them, only saying "It figures." He hands the pictures back to Carolyn, and she looks through them saying "I only see some pictures of the woods here." David says to Carolyn "It's okay. I know what I saw. And now I'm going." David smiles and says goodbye, and he and Roger leave. Liz wonders what Collinwood will be like with David gone, and how there are "no longer any children here. I don't know if I'll get used to that." Alan remarks on how much quieter the place will be, and how he's not sure if he likes that either. Carolyn remarks that Collinwood may not be as quiet a place as they may think. Liz wonders what she means, but then there is a knock at the door, and it's Sebastian. Carolyn leads him into the drawing room and closes the doors.

Carolyn tells Sebastian about her experience with "some angry spirit" and how she drove it away with her ankh necklace. Sebastian asks her if she knows who the spirit was, and Carolyn says she has no idea, but for some reason the spirit seemed angry at Barnabas, but that Barnabas didn't know who it was either. Sebastian thinks about that a moment, and then comments that "perhaps Barnabas has angered spirits in his experiences." Carolyn suggests that they hold a seance and try to contact the spirit and find out why it was so angry. Sebastian mentions that contacting an angry spirit is not always a good idea. Liz and Alan enter the room just in time to hear Sebastian discussing "angry spirits." Liz asks Carolyn what is going on, and Carolyn tells her that she had seen "something" the night before when Barnabas and Angelique were here. Alan remarks how he thought "all the talk of ghosts at Collinwood would have left with David." Carolyn says that she knows what she saw, and wants to contact it. Carolyn suggests that the four of them hold a seance.

Liz resists the idea, but Alan suggests that they hold the seance "so that we can prove that all this talk about ghosts and hauntings is pure nonsense." Carolyn remarks that Alan sounds like Roger. Alan laughs a little at this, and asks how you hold a seance. Sebastian explains as he sets up the table and chairs. As the four sit and join hands, Sebastian leads by trying to contact the "angry spirit who haunts this house" (which I guess means several dozen spirits could show up and take numbers). Alan is skeptical, Liz is nervous, and Carolyn is looking around for any signs as Sebastian continues. Sebastian keeps calling for a "spirit" with no luck, and Carolyn tells him to see if it's a Collins. He nods, and calls to "an angry Collins spirit" and the lights start to flicker. Liz says "What's that?" as Alan tells her to calm down. Sebastian keeps calling to "Collins" and says "Collins spirit, show yourself!" as the lights flicker and a ghostly wind blows through the room. Liz remarks on how "ice cold" it's suddenly gotten in the room, and then they hear the sound of the front doors opening. Carolyn says "He's here!" as Sebastian keeps calling for the "Collins spirit" to "come forth." Suddenly, the drawing room doors swing open, but it's Roger. In his most snide tone, he bellows "What the devil is going on here?" Carolyn tells him not to disturb the circle, a gust of wind seems to blow Roger backwards. "What kind of nonsense is this?" he scoffs, but above him the foyer chandelier is swaying and tinkling. We start to hear Jeremiah's laughter echoing through the foyer as Alan looks towards Roger. Alan suddenly jumps up from the seance and runs towards Roger yelling "Roger! Look out!" Roger looks up, and sees the chandelier snap from it's chain and begin to fall towards him....

Episode 1326

Aired: Monday July 26, 1971

Kate Jackson's voiceover: "It is a night of discoveries at the great house at Collinwood. While one man who has spent his life guarding a dark secret has found he can trust his young cousin more than he has ever known, other members of the Collins family is about to discover how many dark secrets of the past are often impossible to keep hidden...."

Quentin and Daphne return from their evening out and hear Angelique and Harrison talking in the drawing room. Quentin says to Daphne "That doesn't sound like Barnabas talking to Angelique. I wonder if that's our New York cousin..." In the drawing room, Angelique says "I wonder what is taking Barnabas so long with David." Harrison answers that "David is a very interesting person to talk to." Quentin enters, and Harrison turns to see him, and immediately smiles and says "Quentin!" Quentin wonders how he is so well known.

After the titles, Harrison apologizes for his "being so forward," and introduces himself to Quentin, after explaining "I couldn't help but know you after so many people described you to me." Quentin says he hopes it was all positive, and then introduces Daphne. Harrison says "Ah yes, David's governess who they told me about," and says he is pleased to meet her. Quentin asks Harrison how his trip was from New York, and Harrison says it was "fine." Quentin tells Harrison how he's planning on traveling to New York "very soon with Professor Stokes" to do some research on some of the family history there, but "while you're here, perhaps you can help us with some names and places." Harrison looks a little uncomfortable, and says he'll try to help, but that he knows "little of the details in his family's history." Quentin is surprised to hear this, and replies "Well, I'm sure you can tell us something that will be of help." Harrison says he hopes so, but "it will depend on what kind of information you're looking for." We cut to Barnabas coming down the stairs slowly, starting to listen to the conversation in the drawing room. As Quentin keeps asking Harrison to speak more about the New York family and Harrison keeps dodging the questions, Barnabas enters the room and says "Excuse me, but I couldn't help overhearing from the outside." He looks over towards Harrison while continuing "I'd like to hear all about the New York Collins family as well." Harrison looks nervous.

Harrison answers that "there's not much to tell," but Barnabas continues to press him. Angelique tells Barnabas that "Harrison must be tired, perhaps we can talk about this tomorrow." Harrison says it's all right, but that he "was hoping not to have to discuss this subject." Quentin asks him why, and Harrison says "I have been traveling for a long time, Quentin. This is because I have been rather estranged from my relatives for some time. I didn't want to tell anyone this, least of all Elizabeth or Roger. Please, let us keep this knowledge only between us." Barnabas and Quentin look at each other wondering what to say, and Harrison looks at Angelique briefly before leaving the room with "Please excuse me, I am very tired." Harrison leaves and closes the drawing room doors behind him. Angelique scolds Barnabas for putting so much pressure on Harrison, and Barnabas tells Angelique that he's sorry if he's hurt her but that "there's something rather odd about him. Something I can't quite fathom quite yet." Quentin says that he understands what it's like to be estranged from your relatives, and "perhaps Harrison is more sensitive to it than I was." Barnabas says that maybe Quentin is right, and we cut outside to Harrison standing by the door listening. When he hears that everyone has believed his story, he smiles smugly.

Quentin and Daphne come out of the drawing room and she asks him what kind of things Stokes and he will be looking for in New York. Quentin answers that they'll be looking for "any leads" as to Daphne's history, her family, or her connection to Professor Anderson. Daphne says she hopes that they will find something, since she "cannot stand not knowing everything about her identity." Quentin hugs her and tells her that he will find "all her answers for her." She says she believes him, and she rests her head against him. "I should go check on David," she says, but Quentin says that she can wait. She tells Quentin how she knows how fond he is of David, and how it may even make Roger jealous. Quentin laughs a little and says "maybe." Daphne says "Well, perhaps someday you'll have your own children." Quentin looks sad while answering "Maybe..." again, but as we look at the sad expression on his face, we fade to the full moon in the night sky.

In the drawing room, Barnabas asks Angelique what she and Harrison were discussing, and she tries to avoid the subject. Barnabas says he doesn't like "the style of attention he shows you" and Angelique says that she "can handle Harrison. I am sure he will get the message that I am not interested in anyone but my husband." She moves to kiss Barnabas, but suddenly the lights go out in the room, and as Barnabas and Angelique hold each other, the secret panel opens and Jeremiah steps out. We hear him laughing as Barnabas stands in front of Angelique and yells at him to "Get back!" Jeremiah begins to approach Barnabas with his hands outstretched, but then the drawing room doors open, and it's Carolyn. She sees Jeremiah moving towards Barnabas, and yells "Barnabas! What is it? What is it?"

Episode 1325

Aired: Friday July 23, 1971

After a replay of Thursday's close and the titles, Barnabas stands outside David's door and listens for a moment. Inside, David and Sarah are still talking, with Sarah saying "I can't tell you, David. You've just got to trust me." David says "I think I know why you came back this time, Sarah. But I've got to hear it from you so I can be sure." Sarah says "I've got to go now, David." Outside, Barnabas hears this and then hears David say "Sarah, no, don't go. Wait a minute!" Barnabas opens the door and sees David standing there alone, looking disappointed. David turns and sees Barnabas, and says "Barnabas!" Barnabas apologizes for startling David, and then starts to thank him for going to the old house to get Angelique. "That's not all you came to talk to me about though, is it Barnabas?" David says. Barnabas can't think of anything to say, and David continues "You know I've seen her, don't you?"

In the drawing room, Harrison returns to find Angelique sitting and reading. He remarks that Barnabas has been "a while" and "must have a wonderful rapport with David to talk so long." Angelique comments that Barnabas is "very fond" of David and enjoys his company. Harrison says he finds "Barnabas Collins a very interesting man." Angelique says she has always found him so as well. "It seems there's so much going on inside his mind," Harrison continues. "I wonder if a man like him is victim to mood swings, or...how did they once say it, 'bouts of melancholy?'" Angelique answers that she doesn't "know what he means by that." Harrison says that "It's just that I've known men like Barnabas, and sometimes they try to take on too much. Their behavior gets erratic or unsteady." Angelique replies that "Barnabas has never behaved that way at all. It seems you are not a very good judge of people upon early impressions, Harrison." Harrison laughs a little, and says "Perhaps not. Perhaps I tend to think too much and try to figure people out, instead of simply letting myself get to know them better" as he sits down next to Angelique. "Well, there's not much to know about me," she says. "Somehow I doubt that," Harrison says with a smile. "Something tells me you're more mysterious than you let on." Angelique stands up and says that she's "sorry to disappoint you." Harrison apologizes if he's offended her in any way, then muses "I'm sure most men always act like this around you, though. Something about a beautiful woman always turns my mind to mush." "Well, perhaps you will meet the right woman someday," Angelique says. "Perhaps I will," Harrison says with a strange smile.

In David's room, Barnabas is at first evasive, and David repeats "You know I've seen her. Angelique must have told you what happened." Barnabas says that Angelique told him what happened between her and David, but nothing else. David says that he wonders "where Sarah has been all this time. Why did she go away when she did, and why is she back now? Do you have any idea, Barnabas?" Barnabas starts to say "David, I know you were of great help to Quentin and Dr. Hoffman and I when Professor Anderson was here, but that doesn't always mean that you can trust what you think you see sometimes...." but David cuts him off. "You let me help you then, and I know what I saw. I know what I saw at Professor Anderson's house and what he did to my father and Carolyn. It started me thinking about a lot of things, Barnabas. I was very scared when my father and Carolyn were under Professor Anderson's control. He could make them do anything, and he was so evil. But they couldn't help themselves!" Barnabas says "Yes, I know, but that's all over now." David then says "When you first came here, I was scared of you too Barnabas. And that's when I first saw Sarah." Barnabas interrupts "David, you have no reason to be frightened of me." David answers "I know that now." He picks up something out of the toy chest and walks towards Barnabas. "When I was scared of you Sarah gave me this," David says. He opens his hands and shows Barnabas the wooden toy soldier. Barnabas sees it and gasps, taking it from David's hand. He forgets himself for a moment and smiles, lost in his memories, as he says "A member of the regiment...." David studies Barnabas' reaction and then says "Do you want it back?" Barnabas looks at him stunned.

Barnabas grasps for words and says "Did you find this at the old house?" David says "I told you, Sarah gave it to me, to protect me from you. I thought why that might be, and now I see I was right. I thought it was because it would remind you of who you are, who you really are." Barnabas sits down on the bed and says to himself "Who I really am..." David continues "When you first came here you were different than you are now, and you scared me. But then I remember how when I got back from Boston, right about the time that my father got married again, how you changed. You were happier, and nicer somehow. I didn't know why, but I figured that maybe I really had imagined everything, but then I saw how my father and Carolyn changed because of Professor Anderson, and then were all right later on. They didn't want to be evil, they couldn't help themselves. And I thought that maybe you were like that too, and that Sarah knew it. She knew it because she was Barnabas Collins sister. I looked that up in the family history." Barnabas looks at David as if a huge weight has been lifted from him and says "What did she say to you David? Please, I must know." David smiles and says "I can finally tell someone who will believe me! She said she's here to help someone, that was all. But maybe she's listening to us now, and now that she knows we had this talk, she'll appear to you." Barnabas says "Perhaps, yes, perhaps." "I won't tell anyone about our talk, Barnabas, don't worry. I won't even tell Quentin." David says. "Quentin....already knows," Barnabas says. "And it seems Quentin was right about you no longer thinking like a child. That means we have a gentleman's agreement, do you understand?" David smiles and nods. "I'll apologize to Angelique then, and you can tell her whatever you wish to later on then. Isn't that what a gentleman would do?" David asks. Barnabas says "Yes. That would be best." David says he'll go do that, and leaves the room. Barnabas sits alone in David's room and studies the wooden toy soldier in his hand. "Sarah...." he says softy before he begins to weep.

Episode 1324

Aired: Thursday July 22, 1971

After a replay of Wednesday's close and the titles, Angelique tells David she doesn't know what he's talking about, and David says that "she'll see" when he gets his pictures back from the drugstore in town. They leave to head up to Collinwood. At Collinwood, Roger is asking Harrison about the New York branch of the family, and Barnabas is curious as well. "I understand the branch of the family was started by a Quentin Collins, who was somewhat of an eccentric scientist," Barnabas says. "Many people found him ahead of his time," Harrison says. "Actually, I have an heirloom of his, of sorts. This ring I'm wearing." He holds his hand up to Roger, and we see a red jeweled ring. "Well, you and Barnabas have similar tastes. He wears an ancestral ring as well." Roger says. Harrison looks at Barnabas' ring and says "That's certainly a piece of jewelry that one would find hard to forget." As Harrison looks Barnabas over, Barnabas tells Roger he thinks he will have a cup of coffee now since he doesn't know what's keeping Angelique. Roger leads him into the kitchen as Harrison says he'll catch up in a moment. Harrison walks over to Barnabas' portrait and looks at the painting of the ring on Barnabas' finger for a moment. The door opens and David comes in. He says hello to Harrison and then goes upstairs grumpy, and then Harrison turns to see Angelique enter the room. He is agape as she says "Hello, I don't think we've met" to him. He takes her hand and kisses it, saying "I'm Harrison Collins, I've just arrived from New York. Pardon me for being so forward, but suddenly Collinwood is looking much more beautiful." She is charmed by this, and then Barnabas comes in the room. "I am Angelique Collins," she says, pulling away from him and moving to Barnabas. "I see you've met my husband Barnabas." "Husband..." Harrison repeats. Barnabas smiles the victor's smile and says "Yes, we were recently married after a..... long courtship. Well, let us all join the others for breakfast." As they start to leave, we hear Harrison thinking "How right you are Roger... Barnabas and I certainly have similar tastes...."

Barnabas and Angelique are in the drawing room when Barnabas asks Angelique what she thinks of the family's new cousin. She says she finds him quite charming. Barnabas grumbles a bit, and Angelique smiles. "You're jealous of his attentions towards me," she says. Barnabas snaps "I am nothing of the sort. I only want to know more about his motives here." Angelique muses how things are so different now, since "I used to be the one who was jealous of you, Barnabas. I don't think I've ever seen this side of you before." Barnabas tells her that Harrison is not his concern, and that he "must speak to David" about an "important matter." Angelique says "It's Sarah, isn't it, Barnabas?" Barnabas is surprised to hear her say this, but she continues "She appeared to me at the old house. David walked in on us and saw me talking to her. I tried to deny what he had seen, but he insists I was lying." Barnabas says they can worry about David later since "hardly anyone will believe him," and wants to know what Sarah said to Angelique. Angelique tells Barnabas that Sarah only said that Jeremiah was sad, and wanted to help him. Barnabas is relieved to hear this, since it means that Sarah "cannot be angry with me, as Jeremiah is." Angelique says "She was always very important to you, wasn't she?" Barnabas gets a little sad and says "Yes. I always felt like I was responsible for her." Angelique hugs Barnabas tearfully and tells him how sorry she is about what happened to Sarah. He kisses her and says "We have each other." Harrison walks in on them kissing, and clumsily excuses himself. Angelique says it's no bother, and Harrison says "Well, then you won't mind if I sit down." Barnabas grumbles "No, of course not." Harrison mentions how quiet they seemed during breakfast, and then says "I never got the chance to ask either of you how you met." Angelique and Barnabas look at each other.

Barnabas tells Harrison that he and Angelique met "a long time ago, in England" before he found out she was living in Collinwood. They catch Harrison up on the lie that Barnabas and Angelique got back together after the "sad" death of her husband Sky Rumson. Angelique reminds Barnabas that he came over to talk to David, and Harrison says "Oh David is upstairs. Don't worry, I'll keep your lovely wife company until you get back." When Angelique sees Barnabas cringe at this prospect, she says "Well, I'd actually better be getting back to the old house. There are a few rooms I'm working on restoring." Harrison stands and says "Well, let me walk you back there, please. I'd really like to see the old house and what Barnabas and you have done with it." Angelique looks at Barnabas and he says "Well I would prefer you wait for me to finish my discussion with David first, and then we can return to the old house and I can show you what has been done." Harrison slyly smiles and says he'll be in the library whenever Barnabas is ready. After he leaves, Barnabas says "A rather persistent fellow, isn't he." Angelique says "there's nothing to worry about. He's obviously taken a liking to both of us." Barnabas says "I don't think it's both of us he's interested in." Barnabas leaves to go upstairs, and Angelique thinks a moment.

David is in his room, grumpy over the way Angelique treated him. He looks at the trunk he has been packing and then at some of the things around his room. He takes a box of some toys off a shelf and puts it on the floor before taking a ball out of it and playing catch with himself while he thinks "No one ever believes me. But why did she have to lie like that? Why does everyone think that I'm better off if I don't know the truth..." As he's thinking, he's cut off by Sarah's voice "Hello David!" He turns and sees her, and says "You're here! Sarah! You're here!" She giggles and says "Yes, David. Let's play catch!" He tosses her the ball and she throws it back. David then says "Sarah, remember once we played when every time I caught the ball, I got to ask you a question?" She says "Yes, I think I remember that." He says "Would you like to play again?" Sarah says "I don't know." He says "Come on, it will be fun" and throws her the ball. When she throws it back, he asks "Why did you come to see me just now?" She tosses the ball back and answers "Because I knew you were sad." He throws the ball back and asks "Do you know why I'm sad?" She throws it back and says "I don't know." He throws the ball back and asks "Why were you talking to Angelique?" Sarah drops her hands to her sides and lets the ball bounce past her. "I don't want to play anymore," she says. David pleads "Please, Sarah! You've got to tell me! I heard you talking to her!" He reaches into the toy boy and takes out the wooden toy soldier. "Remember when you gave me this, Sarah? You said I should never go to the old house and that this would protect me." Sarah turns away from him and says nothing. "Sarah, please, you've got to remember." We cut to outside in the hallway, as Barnabas is approaching David's room. When he hears the voices, he stops. Inside, Sarah says "I remember, David. But everything is different now. You're not the one who needs protection." David says "Who does Sarah? Tell me!" Outside, Barnabas hears the voices and gasps "Sarah!"

Episode 1323

Aired: Wednesday July 21, 1971

Keith Prentice's voiceover: "A new day has dawned at Collinwood, and there is a new presence at the great house, a relative from New York who has grown interested in Barnabas Collins after hearing of his eccentricities. Even as Barnabas guards his secrets, the curiosity of this newfound Collins relative pale in comparison to the more pressing concern of dealing with the angry spirits of the past that have come back to haunt him and his new bride...."

Barnabas enters the foyer of Collinwood and hangs his cape up. Carolyn comes downstairs and says hello. Barnabas asks if Julia is awake. Carolyn looks surprised, and asks Barnabas "Didn't you know?" "Know what?" Barnabas asks. "She left late last night," Carolyn answers. Barnabas can't believe it as Carolyn adds "She's gone, Barnabas."

After the titles, Barnabas asks Carolyn why Julia left "so suddenly." (And obviously Carolyn can't answer that this story arc was set up because Grayson Hall finally got the vacation she'd asked Dan Curtis for after working steadily on the show for years! ;-) CDT) Carolyn says she doesn't know why. As Barnabas mulls this over, Carolyn says "Oh Barnabas! We have a visitor at Collinwood you must meet!" Barnabas asks who, and Carolyn tells him about their New York cousin Harrison, who has arrived. "Really?" says Barnabas. "I would very much like to meet him." Carolyn says he should be down "any time now" and asks Barnabas if he'd like to join her for coffee. He says thanks, and as she exits towards the kitchen, we hear Barnabas thinking "A cousin from New York... he must be a descendant of that Quentin and Tad from 1840. Perhaps he would know more about Daphne, if he knew about his own family... Quentin must know about this." Barnabas is tapped on the shoulder from behind, and he turns to see Harrison. "Barnabas Collins, I presume," Harrison says, looking rather serious.

"Yes, I am Barnabas Collins. You must be cousin Harrison, from New York," Barnabas says. Harrison nods and they shake hands rather uncomfortably. "I'm sorry, is there a problem?" Barnabas asks. "No, no problem. I guess I'm not used to spending a night here at Collinwood. I guess it's overwhelmed me a little," Harrison says. "I can understand that," Barnabas replies. "I can imagine how you heard about the great house here through the years. I had a similar experience when I first came here and met everyone a few years ago." Harrison asks "How many years have you been here, Barnabas?" Barnabas pauses a moment, and then answers "I came here from England four years ago. And now I cannot imagine living anywhere else." "Even with no telephone or electricity?" Harrison asks. Barnabas smiles. "So, you've heard about my love of authenticity at the old house. Most people don't understand my love of the past, Harrison. I suppose I find the lack of modern conveniences comforting in some way." Harrison smiles "Actually, I think I do understand how you feel." Roger comes downstairs, and remarks that he's glad Harrison and Barnabas have met each other, and also invites Barnabas to stay for breakfast. "And where's Angelique? Why didn't you bring her?" Roger asks. "Well, I had only intended to come here to talk to David," Barnabas asks. Roger says "David? Why did you want to see him?" Barnabas pauses (again) and answers "He had asked me about my ancestor's costume at the wedding, and I only wanted to discuss it with him a little." "David certainly has a great interest in his ancestors," Harrison says. Barnabas, looking a bit nervous, says "Yes, he does."

David comes downstairs and tells his father he's made good progress packing. Barnabas asks why, and Roger tells Barnabas that David has decided to go off to boarding school "for a short summer term, to see if he likes it." Harrison tells David that Barnabas had come over to talk to him, and David asks "What about?" but Barnabas tells him they can talk later, "after breakfast." Barnabas turns away and continues "Please wait for me to return, Roger. I'd like to go back to the old house and get Angelique." David says "I could go tell her, Barnabas. I've already eaten." Roger says "That's very kind of you, David," and starts to lead Barnabas inside. "Actually Barnabas, I'd like to talk to you along with Harrison, since you're such an expert on the family history. Let David go get Angelique." Barnabas says okay, and David goes out the door. At the old house, Angelique is coming downstairs and finds a note left by Barnabas next to the stairs. She picks it up, and we hear his voice "My love, I must speak to my cousin David at Collinwood, but I shall return. Your Barnabas." Angelique smiles as she reads, but suddenly from behind her a familiar voice says "Hello!" Angelique turns and sees Sarah standing in the living room.

"I remember you!" Sarah says to Angelique, who is shocked to see her. "You brought me tea when I was sick. It tasted funny but then I felt better." Angelique slowly moves towards Sarah and asks "Sarah, why have you come back?" "Come back?" Sarah asks. "Where did I go?" Angelique stops, and asks "Are you here because of Jeremiah? Are you here with him?" Sarah looks away from Angelique and says "Uncle Jeremiah is very sad. He shouldn't be here." Angelique gets a little excited at this prospect and says "Yes, Sarah. He shouldn't. Do you know how we can send him away?" "Away where?" asks Sarah. At this point, we cut to the outside of the old house, and David walks up to the door. He hears Angelique and Sarah talking, and stops himself from knocking. Instead, he moves to the window and peeks inside, watching Angelique and Sarah talking. "Do you know how we can help him to go where he won't be sad anymore?" Angelique asks. "I don't know. I only came here to tell you that he's very sad, and I don't want him to be sad." David quietly opens the door to the old house and silently steps inside. Sarah sees him and says "David! You shouldn't be here now!" Angelique looks behind her and sees David, and says "David! What are you doing here?" David answers "You've seen her! You were talking to her!" Before Angelique can answer, David turns back towards the living room, and Sarah is gone. Disappointed, he says "She's gone. I must have scared her away. I'm sorry, Angelique. But no one ever believes me when I tell them I see her. But you saw her! You know you did." Angelique looks at David and says "I don't know what I saw. This old house can play tricks on your eyes, David." David frowns. "I know you're not telling the truth," he says. Angelique says "That was a very rude thing to say, David. I'd hate to think what your father would say if he were here." David replies "He's not here. And I know you're not telling the truth. You saw her and I heard you talking to her." Angelique tells David they better go back to Collinwood and get his father, but David stands firm and says "I know who she is." Angelique gets a little pale at this statement.
