Episode 1254

Aired Thursday April 15, 1971

Julia and Barnabas are discussing that evening's seance in the old house when there is a knock on the door. It is Stokes, who has gotten Barnabas' message and wants to know what is so urgent. Barnabas tells him that he is invited to a seance that evening. Stokes is intrigued.

After the titles, Stokes asks Barnabas the purpose of the seance, and Barnabas tells him it is an attempt to contact the spirit of an imprisoned vampire. Stokes asks for a drink after hearing this. Barnabas looks at Julia for some support, who tells Stokes that they originally asked him to help since they trust him. Upon hearing this, Barnabas decides to prove it by leading Stokes to the bookcase and showing him the secret room where Roxanne's coffin lies chained. "Originally asked?" Stokes says, and then Barnabas tells him that Sebastian and Professor Anderson will be running the seance.

At Collinwood, Quentin is meeting Daphne again. They go into the drawing room. He apologizes for having her come to Collinwood again, but assures her that his car will be repaired soon. She says she doesn't mind, as long as they're not late. Quentin checks his watch and finds it's not working. Daphne asks if she can get it repaired for him, and Quentin flirtatiously tells her he's had the watch a long time and wonders if he can trust her with it as he takes it off and hands it to her. He tells her he'll go upstairs and get another. She holds the watch for a moment and studies it, and then Quentin returns, telling her how strange he feels being able to trust someone, yet there's something about her that makes him want to tell her everything. Daphne is unnerved by this a little, and asks him if he really means it. He kisses her hand with an "Of course I do." She remembers that she won't have a chance to get to the jewelers tomorrow with all her papers to grade and she gives Quentin the watch back. He shrugs, drops it on the desk and they leave arm in arm. Daphne looks relieved for some reason.

That evening at the old house, Barnabas and Julia have put a table and some chairs out while Stokes closes the bookcase door to the secret room. After a moment, Sebastian and Anderson arrive, stepping in from the storm beginning outside. They are both surprised to see Stokes there, but Barnabas tells them that "the more experts we have here the better." They take their seats and Sebastian begins the festivities as they join hands. After Sebastian has called to Roxanne for a while, Julia begins to swoon and go into a trance. Sebastian tries to get her to talk, and she starts to moan "Barnabas....Barnabas...." Barnabas answers with "Roxanne! Speak to me! Speak to us!" Julia continues to moan "Barnabas, danger, you are in danger. All of you..." Barnabas asks "Why Roxanne, why?" but Julia answers "I am not Roxanne.... I am Angelique!"

Back at the seance, Stokes remembers Angelique, Sebastian is losing control, and Barnabas is excited to talk to Angelique. "Angelique!" he says. "What danger? Tell me! Did you warn me of it in my dream?" Anderson wonders what this may mean before Sebastian starts calling Roxanne again. Barnabas objects, wanting to talk to Angelique more. As Barnabas and Sebastian argue, Stokes implores them not to break the circle. Anderson has closed his eyes as Barnabas continues to call for Angelique. Julia suddenly yells "NO!!!" and we see the bookcase door opening by itself! The front door blows open and wind fills the room. Sebastian and Barnabas see this, but Anderson, between them with eyes closed, holds them both to the table telling them they cannot break the trance while Julia is possessed or Julia may die. The door continues opening, and Roxanne's coffin slides out on its own. Barnabas is struggling to deal with this, but he knows he cannot harm Julia, and is helpless. To everyone's astonishment, the chains break and fall away from the coffin, which begins to open. Roxanne sits up and smiles. Sebastian yells at Roxanne to return to her coffin, but she steps out and stands before them, free and triumphant. Julia is out of her trance and calls to Barnabas and Stokes to stop Roxanne, and when Barnabas hears she is fine, he breaks free of Anderson's grip - but as he does, Roxanne dematerializes before his eyes.
