Episode 1454

Aired: Thursday January 20, 1972

After a replay of Wednesday's close and the titles, Harrison yells "Stop this fire! I'll tell you! I'll tell you whatever I can!" Petofi waves THE HAND and the fire stops, leaving no damage. "I knew we could come to some sort of understanding," Petofi says. Harrison glares at Petofi for a moment before saying "You cannot be trusted, can you?" Petofi laughs, but stops when suddenly the black caped and masked figure appears in the window in a flash of lightning! Petofi steps back and shouts "No! No! It's back!" Harrison says "What?" and suddenly the black figure jumps into the room, waving the scimitar high above Petofi. "Not the hand!" Petofi yells. "You cannot take my hand! No!" The black figure slashes at Petofi but misses. Harrison grabs a poker from the fireplace beneath Bramwell's picture and steps between Petofi and the figure. "Gladstone!" he shouts. "You mustn't do this!" He blocks a wave of the scimitar with the poker, but knocks into Petofi as he jumps out of the way of another blow. Petofi's glasses fall to the floor and Petofi yells "No! I cannot see! Help me, Mr. Harrison!" Harrison picks up the glasses from the floor with a smile, and tilts his head towards the door signaling the black figure, who runs from the room and turns the lights out. "Mr. Harrison!" Petofi shouts, feeling around the room in the dark and bumping into furniture. "Help me find my spectacles!" Harrison drops the glasses into his coat pocket at grabs Petofi's arm in the darkened room. "Follow me," Harrison says. "I fought Gladstone off." We see in the hallway outside that Benjamin was disguised as Gladstone and is peeking out of the mask to watch as Harrison holds the ring up to his face as Petofi looks away at blurred darkness. "It's tough for a madman like Gladstone to.....change." And with that, Benjamin watches as Harrison and Petofi both vanish from the room. We cut to the same room in regular time, 1897, dark and empty. Petofi continues to grope in the air, demanding "My glasses! I must have them!" Harrison leads him from the room and says "Come on. Gladstone might still be lurking around here. Don't you have an extra pair?" Petofi says "Back at my cottage." Harrison smiles and says "I'll lead you there." He leads Petofi down the darkened hallway.

Harrison leads Petofi down the steps of Collinwood quickly, though we hear some muffled voices inside the drawing room. As he leaves, we see the portrait of Barnabas is on the wall. After the front door closes, Barnabas comes out of the drawing room with a curious look on his face. We cut to Harrison leading Petofi through the woods. "I suppose you expect another favor for your helping me now, Mr. Harrison," Petofi grumbles. "I don't want you to destroy Collinwood. Isn't it enough that I revealed your existence a hundred and fifty years from now?" Petofi answers "It's never enough to have anything less than complete knowledge, my boy..." They reach the Tate studio, and Harrison leads Petofi in towards the couch. "Where is your other pair of glasses?" Harrison asks. Petofi says "I keep them in that bureau by the door." Harrison nods, but there is no bureau by the door. Harrison takes the glasses from his pocket and we hear him think "Perhaps I should just leave him here.... there's no way he could find his way back to Collinwood without these spectacles...but if only I could be sure..." Suddenly there is the familiar sound of a clanking chain outside. Harrison looks out of the window. "What is that?" Petofi says. "What is that sound?" The chain rattling gets louder. Harrison says he doesn't hear anything, but Petofi says he hears it. "Give me my glasses! I must see what is happening!" Petofi shouts. Harrison looks at the glasses and thinks about it, but suddenly Petofi is next to him, and grabs hold of his neck with THE HAND. "I said give me those glasses....NOW!" Petofi shouts.

Harrison is choking under Petofi's grip as Petofi grabs the glasses and puts them on. He looks around and is shocked. He takes his grip from Harrison's throat and sees the room is filled with Tate's paintings. "You! You tricked me! You brought me back to my own time!" Petofi angrily shouts, coming back towards Harrison with THE HAND raised. "You will pay for your treachery...." Harrison ducks out of the way as the rattling chain gets louder. He grabs one of Tate's canvasses and uses it to shove Petofi backwards towards the couch. The chains get louder and there is a pounding on the door. "Treachery!" Harrison shouts, and (with apologies to Captain Kirk) adds "You're a man of treachery in both universes, Petofi!" Harrison flings the door open, and Garth Blackwood steps in, holding a burning torch. "There is your criminal!" Harrison shouts. "He's a murderer....and a cheat!" Petofi shouts "No! No! Get back, Blackwood! He has been helping me! Yes, he has been helping the criminal!" Harrison shouts "He lies! The criminal lies!" Blackwood looks at them both and begins to torch the room. "There will be a trial by fire!" Blackwood shouts. Petofi scowls at Harrison and says "I will live long enough to destroy you, Harrison Collins! I will destroy the Collins family!" Petofi tries to run out of the room, but Blackwood grabs him and won't let him go. "You must stay and face justice!" Blackwood declares. As he and Petofi struggle, Harrison runs out the door and closes it behind him before running into the woods. He watches as Tate's studio burns and screams are heard from inside. He hears some footsteps in the woods and ducks out of sight. Several gypsies appear. They smile and nod as the Tate house burns. "Now we wait," one of them says. "We will take Petofi alive," says another, rubbing his thumb along the blade of an identical scimitar to Gladstone's. Harrison sighs and smiles. After a shot of the moon rising, we see the gypsies dragging an unconscious Petofi from the wreckage of Tate's studio. His glasses fall off and lay on the ground. Harrison looks at them and snickers at the irony, but then hears more footsteps coming. He ducks into the woods again as Barnabas approaches. Barnabas finds the glasses, and then stops to think a moment before entering the ruins of the studio. Harrison steps out of the woods and we hear him thinking. "That was Barnabas! What could he be doing here? Do I dare find out...." He starts to take a step towards the ruins, but then stops. "No!" he thinks. "Barnabas would not and must not know me here....I must get back to the East Wing while I have the chance." He heads back towards Collinwood.

Harrison sneaks into Collinwood and runs upstairs. He walks down the East Wing corridor and enters the parallel time room. Meanwhile in parallel time, Benjamin has removed the cape and mask and waits in the room. We hear him thinking "I wonder what could be happening in that other world...so strange....that this room could hide another time, another place. I wonder who my counterpart is in that world and what they are doing right now. Or what that other Collins family is like." He looks up at the portrait of Bramwell. "If Harrison was right and there was no ancestor of his named Bramwell, I wonder if any of us exist in that strange other life. Perhaps it's better for us not to know.... it's time I lived my own life here to the fullest anyway." He puts the scimitar down when suddenly behind him is Harrison. "Harrison!" Benjamin says. "What happened? Petofi....is he gone?" Harrison smiles. "Petofi is where he belongs. It is done," he says. He and Benjamin smile at each other.

Episode 1453

Aired: Wednesday January 19, 1972

David Selby's voiceover: "Collinwood, in the strange world of parallel time in the year 1897. Most of the dangers facing the Collins family here have passed. Valery Stokes is no longer threatened by the plots of her now dead husband, Gregory Trask, and has declared her love for Harrison Collins, the mysterious visitor from another time. Benjamin Collins has been freed from the powers of the succubus masquerading as his long lost love Kitty Soames. And on this night, Carl Collins has witnessed the destruction of the vengeful spirit of Peter Bradford, destroyed by the suicide of the possessed Sheriff Gladstone. He has come to Collinwood to announce happier news, but little does he know that there is one potential source of destruction that has yet to be dealt with....."

Carl paces in the drawing room, looking at the scimitar atop the folded cape and black mask. Harrison returns with Benjamin and Quentin, who ask Carl what happened. Carl tells them how Bradford's spirit was destroyed by Gladstone, who sacrificed himself in a way that will ensure that Bradford will never return, since no one will ever find the body. Quentin examines the scimitar and says "Poor devil.... he solved his greatest case in a way that no man should." Benjamin tries to change the subject by asking "But Harrison has told us you have good news to tell us, Carl." Carl smiles and says "Yes, yes. I was on my way to tell you when Gladstone found me." He takes a deep breath and says "I'm going to marry Charity Trask." The three others are surprised, but happy.

After the titles, they are all toasting Carl with some drinks. Quentin remarks how "it's about time there was some happiness in this house." Carl says "Thanks. Harrison looks pretty happy, now that Valery has recovered." Harrison nods, and says "Thank God for that." Quentin takes a drink and humphs "God, or Petofi? Sometimes I wonder if the man thinks he is God." Carl asks who Petofi is, and Harrison tells him it's better he doesn't know. Carl asks Quentin if he still has Roderick's books on the occult in case there's something special that needs to be done with the cape, mask and scimitar. Quentin looks them over and says "As far as I can tell, with Bradford's ghost destroyed, these objects have lost their enchantment. I'll check to make sure, otherwise you might just have some souvenirs." Carl says he couldn't "keep the thing that killed Jenny." He tells Quentin to get rid of it, and then says goodnight. "Carl is finally free of his demons," Benjamin says. Quentin remarks that he wishes he were "free of mine," and Benjamin says "Are you angry that I've been seeing Rachel?" Surprised, Quentin says "Benjamin, you've never been so forward before." Benjamin answers "Perhaps everything I've been through has made me less reserved. I was thinking a lot about it all last night, especially after what you told us, Harrison." Harrison is interested as Benjamin continues "If you came from another time and altered this one, chances are I would've died if this time had not been changed. I feel like I'm living a second life now. I decided to live it differently than I have in the past." Harrison says that "none of us can be sure about the changes I may have made here." Quentin answers "Who knows? Perhaps this world in your time of 2045 is different now, or even in the time you left in 1971. Somehow I can relate more to that one... I wonder who will be living here in 1971, now that you've changed so much in this time?" Harrison thinks a moment and says "I don't know. But I wonder..." Quentin takes another drink and says "Well, to answer your question, Benjamin, as far as Rachel goes, you have my blessings. Anything between her and me was over long ago. And I know how you always felt after Edward married her." Benjamin smiles and says "It was always that obvious?" Quentin nods. Benjamin remarks how Collinwood might finally be getting back "to normal," but Harrison says "You forgot another change I made, one I didn't wish to. I don't know how normal things can be with Count Petofi here."

Lucy is leaving Jamison's room when she runs into Quentin. He asks her how Jamison is, and how he's dealing with what happened to Edward. Lucy remarks that having Rachel back has been a "tremendous help. Otherwise, he might have felt very alone...especially if something had happened to you as well." Quentin looks thoughtful, and Lucy asks him how he feels about Rachel being back. Quentin smiles slyly and says "You'd love it if I fought with her, wouldn't you?" Lucy gets upset and accuses Quentin of always suspecting her. Quentin answers "For your information, I have no problems with Rachel and Benjamin rekindling whatever they had before Edward stepped in all those years ago. Perhaps if Benjamin had been more decisive then, who knows?" Lucy snaps "You wouldn't have stepped in as well?" and then turns away, saying "I'm sorry...I didn't mean that." Quentin says "No, I deserve that. I was a cad, to my own brother. I didn't know if I was acting out against him, or just trying to find a way to be closer to Jamison. I suppose it doesn't really matter now." Lucy says "Rachel is thinking of taking Jamison traveling with her and Benjamin. He may not need a governess anymore. I've been looking at employment in the village." Quentin looks at her and says "You're leaving us?" Lucy starts to walk away and says "Without Jamison, there's nothing for me here." Quentin stops her and says "I wouldn't go that far." She looks at him skeptically and steps away, but he holds onto her arm. "Quentin, let me go! Let me go!" He shakes his head and draws her in. She protests at first and fights as he begins to kiss her, but then she begins to cry and hugs him. "Oh, Quentin...." she says. (Doesn't every girl on the show, sooner or later?)

Harrison is watching the fire in the drawing room and thinking out loud. "There must be a way of stopping Petofi," he says. Benjamin is sitting and thinking as well. "According to what you've told me," Benjamin says, "Petofi must be returned to his own time, or else your world may be threatened." Harrison says "That's right. But I don't know how we can do that without revealing the secret of that room to him. Unless.....I thought I observed a weakness in Petofi the other night. I wonder if it could be useful." Benjamin says "Obviously with his treatment of Valery, he thinks he owes you nothing and will make demands again, once he recovers from his wound." Benjamin walks over to the scimitar. "Interesting how a man of such considerable powers was so terrified by the sight of this blade. Perhaps it had some meaning in his own world." Harrison humphs and says "Too bad Gladstone didn't finish the job, it would've saved us all a lot of trouble." Benjamin looks over the scimitar and the cape for a moment, and then forms a sly smile. "There may be a way to deal with Petofi after all," Benjamin says. "Tell me what that other weakness you spotted was. I may have a plan." Harrison is interested.

Harrison stands in the parallel time room looking up at the portrait of Bramwell. Petofi enters, and says "Your lovely friend Miss Stokes told me I could find you here, " he says. "She is certainly back to living her life as was meant....or was it? One can only wonder about all the changes you've made here in your journey from the twenty first century." Harrison says "Something tells me you didn't come to discuss the possibilities of those changes." Petofi says "I have come to discuss other possibilities. My arm is feeling better after that unfortunate attack. I will have to deal with Mr. Gladstone when the time comes." Harrison says "Gladstone is innocent. He's possessed by an evil spirit!" Petofi answers "The man must be destroyed. Sooner or later, I will catch up to him, when he is not under the control of that spirit and in the possession of that scimitar. And he will pay for what he's done to me." Harrison snaps "You're very good at exacting payment, aren't you? The only reason you cured Valery was so that you would no longer owe me your life, and then you'd be able to force me to tell you the supposed secret of this room." Petofi says "I have made it my business to understand such things, my boy. Regardless of my existence in your world in the twenty first century, I must know that my venture here in this world will not affect that. Tell me, how do you know me in your own time?" Harrison turns away and says "You know I can't tell you that. It could change the future." Petofi says "I am interested in changing the future. After all, if I stay here in this world, I am assured to survive to that time and beyond, since I have no enemies here. That is why I must know the secret of this room, or...." Petofi points a finger of THE HAND towards the wall - and a fire starts immediately! "....or I will be forced to destroy this room if not all of Collinwood." Harrison yells "No! STOP!" and struggles to put out the fire by tearing down one of the curtains and pounding on it. "Tell me the secret, Mr. Harrison....or it will be destroyed in this room tonight!" Harrison struggles against the fire as Petofi laughs.

Episode 1452

Aired: Tuesday January 18, 1972

After a replay of Monday's close and the titles, Gladstone swings the scimitar at Carl, who lunges out of the way. Carl begins to run, but Gladstone follows, yelling that he will "spill the blood of the innocent!" Carl reaches Widow's Hill and stops in his tracks as Gladstone approaches. "You're trapped!" Gladstone says as he raises the scimitar. Carl tells him to get back and takes out a gun. "I didn't want to have to do this! Gladstone! Fight him! Fight Bradford! I don't want to kill you!" Gladstone laughs and says "Gladstone is already dead! Go ahead and shoot! You'll only fulfill my ultimate plan!" Carl wonders what this means, and then aims the gun. Suddenly, Gladstone jerks violently, and rips the black mask off. He is fighting against his own impulses as he struggles to say "Carl....no....don't....if you kill me...it won't end! It won't end!" Carl says "Gladstone! Fight him! That's it! You're winning!" Gladstone struggles and tells Carl not to kill him, but then Bradford's spirit appears and commands Gladstone to "spill Carl Collins' blood!" Gladstone screams "No!" at the apparition, but Bradford points at Gladstone, who helplessly begins to raise the scimitar. Shaking, he tells Carl "I'm sorry...I can't stop it....." Carl says "I'm sorry too," and fires the gun! Gladstone grabs his side and drops the scimitar. He falls to his knees but gasps heavy breaths. Carl holds the gun while looking at Bradford's ghost and says "You won't have him! You won't kill anymore!" Bradford laughs and says "You've only played into my hands!" Gladstone, bleeding, takes the cape off to get a better look at his wound. "He's right," Gladstone says. "Carl! You've got to get out of here! You've got to get out of here before I die!" Carl wonders why.

Gladstone implores Carl to leave, but Carl says that Gladstone needs medical help. Gladstone waves him off and says "Get out! Get out! You can't be here when I die, don't you understand?" Bradford laughs, but then Carl figures it out. "The first one to find his dead body is your next slave, isn't that right, Bradford?" Bradford smiles and says "The book has foretold it, Carl Collins. Five years from now, I will control thee...and you will bring me the blood of five new victims....your own child among them...." Carl screams "NO! I won't let you!" Bradford laughs and says "You cannot stop me!" Gladstone struggles to his feet with his last breath and says "I can stop you Bradford! The tide is going out! No one will ever find me!" With a burst of strength, Gladstone runs and leaps off the cliff at Widow's Hill! Carl, shocked, yells "Gladstone! No!" but Gladstone vanishes into the crashing waves below. Bradford's ghost screams, and starts to fade. "No! No! There will be no vessel for me!" he moans. "I....have no one in this world.....I cannot go on...." Bradford's ghost begins to turn into what Gladstone's body will at the bottom of the sea....a rotted green skeleton covered in mud and seaweed....before fading away in front of Carl's astonished eyes. With a last scream, Bradford vanishes as Carl listens to the scream blend in with the sound of the wind and crashing waves below. He picks up the cape, mask and scimitar and then takes a deep breath. "Goodbye, Gladstone," he says. "You're finally free." Back at Collinwood, Valery is having tea in the drawing room when Harrison enters. He asks her how she's feeling, and she says that it's nice to have her life back. Harrison tells her he's glad, though he asks her if she's disappointed that she wasn't her grandmother's heir. "No," she says. "In fact, I think grandmother may have been wise to think of Jamison. He'll grow up learning the responsibility of the estate and won't make the kind of mistake I did." Harrison tells her that "it's no crime to follow your heart." She looks at him and says "I know where to follow it now." They kiss, and he says "I have to tell you something about me, Valery. It's time you knew everything." Valery wonders what this might be.

Valery is still dealing with what Harrison has told her. "I can't believe everything you've told me," she says. He pours himself a brandy and says "It's all true. I've also told Quentin and Benjamin. I'm not sure why I arrived here instead of returning to my own time and my own world, but I have a suspicion." He smiles at her. She smiles back. "What is your world like?" she asks. He sits next to her and answers "Well, it ought to be different than when I left it. From what I saw, my father was alive again. And the Collins family of that world once again lived in this wonderful house." Valery says "If you could return at any time, why did you stay here?" He takes her hand and says "When I first arrived, I saw a beautiful young woman who I thought needed my help. And it turned out I was right. In the world I left, there was someone much like you, who I had to leave behind. I took it as a sign of fate that I was brought here to you." She kisses him and says "I don't know what would have happened to me, to any of us, if you hadn't been here. But I don't want to be the reason you never see your father if you stay here instead. Unless...." Harrison asks "Unless what?" Valery says "Unless...I came with you, to your time." Harrison mulls that over as she adds "What else is there for me here? My father is gone....my brother never speaks to anyone here. If I wrote him that I was going away, that's all he'd care to know. I suppose the only one I'd miss would be Quentin." Harrison answers "Well, in my world there's someone who'll remind you of Quentin quite a bit." Valery gets excited and says "Oh, will you take me with you then?" Harrison smiles and says "I couldn't be apart from you, ever. I love you." Valery tells Harrison she loves him too. He answers "We'll make a new life in my time, the both of us." They kiss.

Carl arrives at Collinwood, carrying the cape, mask and scimitar. Harrison comes out of the drawing room and sees the scimitar and asks Carl "where did you find this? Have you seen Gladstone?" Carl says "Yes, I saw him. He's gone. It's over." Harrison says "I'll get Quentin." Carl says "Get Benjamin as well. I....I came here to tell them what happened to Gladstone, but I also have some other news as well." Harrison asks "Why did you bring those things here?" Carl says "I don't know. Gladstone is dead." Harrison is surprised. "How?" he asks. Carl answers "It's a long story. Don't worry about these things, they're harmless now, with Bradford's spirit gone. I thought about throwing them over the cliff, but then I remembered Quentin had those books on the occult. Maybe there's something in those books that will tell us how to keep these things harmless. But I have to tell them what happened." Harrison says he'll get Quentin and Benjamin and goes upstairs. "Can I tell them what your other news is as well?" he asks before reaching the top. Carl says "Tell them it's good news." Harrison continues on as Carl smiles. Harrison stops again and says "Good news makes me curious. Can you tell me?" he asks. Carl answers "Gather as many people as you can. I'd rather tell everyone." Harrison is curious.

Episode 1451

Aired: Monday January 17, 1972

In a replay of Friday's close, Harrison is thinking about how to deal with Petofi. Harrison turns away from Petofi and looks at his ring, and we hear him think "He cannot know the secret of this crystal...at least he didn't notice I had replaced it back into my ring where it belongs...there must be some way out of this." Petofi says "I would hate to destroy such a beautiful house such as this. And saving it would be so easy on your part." Petofi takes off his glasses to clean them, and as he does, he bumps into a table as he talks. Harrison notices this and is interested when there is a thumping at the window. Harrison turns to look, and tells Petofi "Do you see anyone out there?" Petofi puts his glasses back on and says "I heard something. Do you think someone curious is eavesdropping on us?" Petofi walks to the window and opens it. "Perhaps they should stay out of my business, lest they face the hand of Petofi..." He raises the hand and laughs, and then suddenly Gladstone jumps through the open window waving the scimitar. "Gladstone!" Harrison shouts. "What are you doing?" Passively, Gladstone says "I must sanctify new ground with the blood of a living victim...." He looks at Petofi and says "You will be the chosen one..." He raises the scimitar with his bloodthirsty eye on Petofi's raised hand...Petofi yells "No! No!"

After the titles, Gladstone slashes at Petofi with the scimitar and Petofi grabs his arm and yelps in pain. Harrison shouts "Gladstone! Stop!" but Gladstone smiles and bellows "Gladstone is powerless to stop the revenge of Peter Bradford! New ground must be sanctified!" He raises the scimitar again, but Harrison grabs the foil off the wall and blocks the blade from Petofi's wrist by inches. Gladstone tries again, but Harrison twists his wrist and the scimitar flies from Gladstone's hand. "Don't..... don't make me kill you," Harrison says, stepping between Gladstone and the fallen blade, but Gladstone begins to laugh. "You cannot stop my spirit! I shall return, more properly attired..... with the mask of Bradford!" He points a finger at the trembling Petofi and shouts "You have been chosen to sanctify new ground with your blood! Your hands shall be mine!" Harrison takes a step towards Petofi protectively. Taking the opportunity, Gladstone grabs the scimitar from where it has fallen, and runs back through the drawing room window and into the night. "My God," Harrison says. "The man is possessed... Carl was right." He puts the fencing foil back on the wall and asks Petofi if he needs a doctor. Holding his arm, Petofi says "It's only a cut, Mr. Harrison. He did not manage any more damage than that, which may turn out to be most unfortunate for him." Harrison cautions Petofi, saying "He had no control over his actions, Petofi. He's possessed. If you fight anyone, fight the spirit that controls him." Petofi says he "has no time to make such distinctions" but "that I also face a new problem. It seems I owe you a great deal, Mr. Harrison. Your quick thinking saved me.... and saved this hand." Harrison says "Something tells me that you'll decide what you owe me more than I will." Petofi smiles mysteriously.

Gladstone is stumbling through the woods. He starts to look around and then says "What...what am I doing out here?" He realizes he's holding the scimitar and gasps. "No....No!" He sees some blood on the blade. "Have I killed again? Why can't I remember?" The spirit of Peter Bradford appears in front of him. "You!" Gladstone angrily growls. "I'll destroy you!" Bradford laughs, and tells Gladstone that he must "sanctify new ground." Gladstone yells that he'll never help Bradford again, and that he'll find a way to fight him. Bradford hands him the black cape and mask, saying "You let yourself be recognized, Gladstone. That was stupid. Not that it will matter for very much longer, but you must wear these, as I did..." Gladstone is at first entranced and takes the cape and mask, but suddenly throws them and the scimitar to the ground angrily. "No!" he yells. "I will fight you! I must!" Bradford, angry, orders Gladstone to "pick those sacred objects up! NOW!" Gladstone fights, but is forced to his knees as he picks up the objects. Bradford commands "Now put them on. You have no choice but to obey me. You have no will of your own." Gladstone struggles against the power, but begins to put the mask on. Meanwhile back at Collinwood, Petofi is wearing a bandage on his arm and having a brandy. Harrison asks him if he's feeling better, and then says "I suppose asking you to repay me by forgetting about that room in the East Wing is too high a price." Petofi says he cannot forget the East Wing "when my enemies are so determined to destroy me. You wouldn't understand what kind of danger I was in, back in my own world. But then Mr. Harrison, shouldn't I refer to it as your world as well?" Harrison closes the doors to the drawing room and reminds Petofi that only Benjamin and Quentin know "of my true identity here." Petofi says "It must be fascinating to be able to travel all over time as you've done, Mr. Harrison. It's a secret I'd very much like to understand." Harrison has been thinking, and then seems to have an idea. "Knowledge of the future might alter the future," he says. "That's why I cannot tell you anything." Petofi says "I don't understand. How can I alter the future of that other time if I remain here?" Harrison suddenly gets frustrated and snaps "Because you were in my time! Don't you understand? That's how I recognized you! I know you in the year 2045!" Petofi grows fascinated as Harrison turns away from Petofi and smiles slyly.

Petofi walks to Harrison and says "Are you telling me I still exist in the year 2045?" Harrison steps away and says "I shouldn't have told you that. I've told you too much already, and now that you know, that future may be altered!" Petofi grows fascinated with the idea that he still lives in the twenty first century. "And I look the same? I am in this body? I know it sounds like a strange question, but..." Harrison nods, and says "You look the same, a little younger perhaps. Except for your clothes, I recognized you immediately." Harrison turns away and says "I cannot tell you anything more." Petofi thinks a moment and says "I doubt it is a coincidence that you know me in the future and yet you travel back through time....and you traveled back through time affecting my life.....perhaps I gave you the power in order to go back and save me from my enemies..." Harrison says "I cannot tell you anything more." Petofi smiles and says "I don't know if I need to hear anything more, my boy." Upstairs, Valery sits in a rocking chair by the window, staring vacantly outside. Petofi enters the room and turns on the light. Valery sees him and says "Father? Have you come back to me? How have you come back?" Petofi walks to her and says "I am not your father, Miss Stokes." Valery sees the red jeweled ring on Petofi's hand and gets frightened. "The rose! I see the rose! The rose will mean death!" she says, cowering. Petofi raises his hand and looks at it a moment, and says "Your troubles will soon be over, Miss Stokes....once I show you the power of this hand..." He reaches out towards her with THE HAND and she screams.

Harrison arrives at Valery's door and sees Petofi standing over her. "What are you doing here? Get away from her!" He runs to her as Petofi says "Calm yourself, Mr. Harrison. You can plainly see I've done her no harm." Valery blinks a couple of times and then looks at Harrison. "Harrison?" she says. "Valery? You know me? You recognize me?" he asks. She nods and jumps out of her chair to hug him. "I....I remember being taken away by Gregory....I was locked in a cabin somewhere...." She starts to get upset, and Harrison calms her. "It's all over now, you're safe here. Trask will not bother you ever again." She hugs Harrison again, and says "You were the one who saved me, I remember now. I remember it all....Gregory only wanted the money. He tried to use me to kill Alice for him." Harrison tells her it's all over, and she asks "Who is this man? Is he a doctor?" Petofi introduces himself, and says "I am not a doctor in the traditional sense. But I am a friend of Mr. Harrison's, and I knew that I might be able to help with your condition. I am happy to have been of service." He bows and leaves as Harrison watches him. "You'll be all right?" Harrison asks Valery. She says yes, and he tells her she should find Benjamin and Quentin to tell them she's recovered "while I see my good friend Petofi out." Harrison leaves the room, and we cut to him following Petofi downstairs. "Why did you do that?" Harrison asks him. Petofi gets his coat and says "Because it was what you wanted, my boy. And like you said, I would be the one to name the price for the service you performed for me this night." Harrison says "Well, I guess I owe you thanks, but in all honesty, I must wonder if this means that we are completely even and no longer have any business with each other." Petofi puts his hat on and says "Oh to the contrary, my boy. With what you've told me of the future tonight, we have many things to discuss. Many things." Petofi leaves as Harrison thinks about what he's said. Meanwhile, Carl is walking in the woods. Suddenly, Gladstone, dressed in the mask and cape and handling the scimitar, blocks his path. Carl is startled, and says "Gladstone! Get back!" Gladstone says "This will be perfect! I, Bradford, will sanctify new ground with my next pawn!" Carl steps back and tells Gladstone to fight Bradford. Gladstone raises the scimitar and shouts "Prepare to christen a new sanctuary!"

Episode 1450

Aired: Friday January 14, 1972

Roger Davis' voiceover: "The strange world of parallel time in the year 1897 has grown ever more dangerous for Harrison Collins and the Collins family. A stranger with seemingly unlimited powers of evil who has discovered the secrets of parallel time, secrets he must protect in order to prevent his enemies from ever finding him. Hanging in the balance is the fate of Valery Stokes, whose mind has been destroyed in a failed plot to steal her inheritance. But on this night, events will take a new and mysterious turn...."

After a replay of Petofi's entrance from Thursday's close and the titles, Harrison tells Petofi they have "nothing to discuss," and Petofi tells him "Perhaps you believe you can save Miss Stokes' mind in this time? Or in your own?" Quentin snaps "What do you want, Petofi? Since you know the truth, it's also no secret that Harrison saved your life by bringing you here. Why not appreciate that and quit while you're ahead?" Petofi answers "I may be grateful, but only to a point. You seem I've already saved Mr. Harrison once, which has evened the score. Now I am much more concerned about the possibility of others discovering my escape and pursuing me through the doorway in the East Wing. I only want that doorway to be sealed. I know you will return to your own world, Mr. Harrison. But I cannot be sure you will abide by any bargain with me to seal the doorway behind you. Therefore, I would want it closed on this end." Harrison says "That's impossible, I don't know how to close it!" Petofi says "If that's true, that's most unfortunate. Most unfortunate indeed. Because the only other way I can think of to destroy that doorway is to destroy the room that contains it." Benjamin shouts "You're not going to destroy any part of this house!" Petofi says "I'll destroy the entire house if I think it necessary to protect my safety. There's another one on this estate that could accommodate the family. But perhaps it need not come to that, if Mr. Harrison becomes more cooperative. I'll leave you to consider my offer." Petofi leaves and Benjamin says "Would he really destroy Collinwood?" Harrison says "Yes. You can count on that."

Gladstone has reached the entrance for the cave in the woods. He's brought a can of gasoline with him, and goes down into the cave. He starts to pour the gas all over the bones lining the shelves on the walls, on the table, and on the cape and mask hanging on the wall. "You will burn, Peter Bradford! Your sanctified ground will be burned and purged of your evil!" Gladstone says maniacally as he pours the gas. He climbs out of the cave and tosses the can aside as he lights a match. "Isn't this how they destroyed witches and Satanists, Bradford? With fire?" He throws the match into the cave, which bursts into flame. Gladstone smiles as he watches the fire burning, but then Bradford's spirit appears. "You will pay for what you have done," Bradford says. Gladstone yells "I'm destroying your sanctified ground! You will be destroyed as well!" Bradford, angry, says "The sword lives on, Gladstone! You have not destroyed the avenging blade! And it will be used to create new sanctified ground...." Gladstone defiantly yells "No! You won't be able to start again!" Suddenly the sword appears in the hands of Bradford. He says "Take it" to Gladstone. Gladstone seems to be losing control and reaches for it, but then pulls back. "No! I won't do your killing anymore! You are going to be destroyed!" Gladstone runs away as Bradford holds the scimitar and says "You will not escape my power...." Meanwhile, Harrison watches Valery as she sleeps. Benjamin comes in and tells Harrison that if he was indeed "sent here" to save Valery from this fate, "perhaps you'd better find some way of dealing with Petofi." Harrison says that he can't give Petofi what he wants, and even if he does, it's no guarantee that Petofi wouldn't destroy Collinwood anyway. "It's all my fault for bringing him here in the first place....if I had only been more careful..." Benjamin says "He cannot be invincible. There must be a way to defeat him if he has enemies he is frightened of." Harrison nods and says he wishes he knew a way to outsmart him.

Gladstone gets back to the jail and locks the door when Bradford appears again, holding the scimitar. Gladstone yells "No!" but Bradford says "Thou must sanctify new ground...." Gladstone says he won't, and that "Without that sanctified ground, you cannot kill anymore!" Bradford says that his power still resides in the "avenging blade" that Gladstone hasn't destroyed, and that it will be used to "sanctify new ground." Gladstone tries to get back out of the jail, but Bradford touches him with the flat of the blade, and Gladstone turns around slowly, entranced. Bradford smiles and says "Yes, Gladstone...you are now under the power of the sword." Gladstone says "Yes," weakly. "And now," Bradford says "Thou must sanctify new ground with the blood of a living victim." Gladstone says "A living victim," passively. Bradford says "The blood must be fresh...fresh from the mutilation of someone who must not die before the true targets of death are chosen once again..." He hands Gladstone the sword, who says "I will sanctify new ground." Bradford smiles and vanishes as Gladstone leaves the jail with the scimitar in hand.

Harrison waits in the drawing room as the clock strikes. Petofi enters the house and says "I understand you wish to see me, Mr. Harrison." Harrison nods, and asks Petofi exactly what he can do to save Valery. Petofi says "I can restore her mind to what it was before Mr. Trask's chemicals destroyed portions of it as easily as you sip that brandy. But first, I must demand my price." Harrison says he cannot seal the room "from this timeband" and Petofi says "Come, come, we both know that my price is much more than that. You see, I need to know what knowledge you have of that room. How it operates. How one such as yourself is able to direct yourself through time." Harrison insists that his "voyages through time" have been out of his control, but Petofi says "I don't believe in coincidences. Somehow you knew how to bring me back here with you, just as you knew how to come into my world...for reasons I'm not sure of as yet. I must know these things if I am to do anything for your Miss Valery." Harrison turns away from Petofi and looks at his ring, and we hear him think "He cannot know the secret of this crystal...at least he didn't notice I had replaced it back into my ring where it belongs...there must be some way out of this." Petofi says "I would hate to destroy such a beautiful house such as this. No!"

Episode 1449

Aired: Thursday January 13, 1972

After a replay of Wednesday's close and the titles, Harrison finds Quentin drinking in the drawing room (no doubt after an extensive search of the house). Quentin remarks how he might be able to handle Rachel living under the same roof, but he's not sure about the idea of Rachel and Benjamin as a couple. Harrison says "A couple?" Quentin says "Sorry, just imagining things. But I think Benjamin is quite a different person now. And, he is related to me..." He gulps his drink. Harrison smiles and says "Rachel too? I thought Miss Drew and you were..." Quentin says "Aren't you the observant one....well, I suppose I could tell you a secret, but I think I'd want one in return from you." Harrison says "You know I've been hiding some from you..." Quentin says "I'd considered it. Especially when I see someone vanish before my eyes in a room that supposedly is a doorway to another world, yes." Harrison says "There's more to it than that." Quentin says "Don't tell me, you're not really from New York." Harrison answers "Well, actually I am, only not the New York you know." Quentin wonders what this might mean when Benjamin and Rachel return. As Quentin and Harrison listen from the other room, Benjamin tells Rachel what a nice time he had, and that he'll show Jamison around the shipyards the next day. He kisses her hand and she goes upstairs. Then he sees Quentin and Harrison looking at him. "You're both up rather late," he says. "Doesn't anyone in this house sleep normal hours?" Quentin says "No, it must be something in the water." Harrison asks Benjamin to come into the drawing room since "you should hear what I was going to tell Quentin." Benjamin is interested, and enters, closing the doors behind him. "It's time you both knew who I really am and where I really come from," Harrison says. Quentin and Benjamin wonder.

Harrison pours himself a drink and says "You must both understand that Petofi must not know what I'm telling you. I'm afraid he may use the knowledge against any one of us." He hands the drink to Benjamin, who asks "More tales of parallel worlds in East Wing rooms?" Harrison nods and says "More than that. I'm from that other world. I found myself here by accident when trying to return to my own time." Quentin says "Your own time?" Harrison says "I'm also from a different time in that other world. A time in the future. That's why I have no counterpart here in this time, as you do in the 1897 of the other world." Benjamin contemplates this as Quentin says "We all have counterparts in that other world? There's another Quentin Collins living there?" Harrison says "Yes, but he's not quite the same Quentin Collins as you are. You see, the people in that other world live other lives, based upon different choices they've made from you." Benjamin says "That's fascinating...each one of us living another life somewhere. Is it possible that in that other world Edward, or Beth or....Kitty.....could still be alive?" Harrison says "Edward is, or ought to be. He's my direct ancestor in that world." Benjamin says "Extraordinary! But how did you come to be able to travel through time?" Harrison says "Another ancestor in that world stumbled upon some secrets of time, secrets I accidentally discovered and became caught up in. I would've returned to my own world as quickly as possible, but after seeing Valery, I couldn't help but wonder why I had found myself here.... I had saved a counterpart of hers in my own world only to lose her...." Quentin says "And now you've lost Valery, it seems." Benjamin says "But you've saved both of us. Who knows what might have happened if you hadn't come here from your time? You may have changed the course of history here." Harrison answers "I still want to save Valery. I just don't want to owe Petofi for it. He'd want to know everything I just told you." Quentin and Benjamin think of this as we zoom out a bit to see that the image of everything we've just seen is on a window in the Young cottage as Petofi watches and laughs. He waves his hand and the image vanishes, becoming a stained glass window again. "Oh, Mr. Harrison... that was indeed most interesting..." he says.

Gladstone is looking through his books and newspapers, thinking "There must be an answer...there must be...." when Bradford's spirit appears to him. "You!" Gladstone shouts. "You won't win! You won't kill me and keep going on!" Bradford laughs and says that "Many more will die!" Gladstone answers "How can I cut my own hands off? It makes no sense!" Bradford laughs again. "When your body is found, I will find my new vessel....my revenge will continue...." Gladstone shouts "It won't! I will destroy you!" Bradford answers "The sanctified ground will sustain me forever...and will sustain the avenging blade....you cannot destroy me..." He laughs and vanishes as Gladstone grabs nothing but air as he reaches for him. Gladstone starts pacing and thinks "There must be an answer...." After a moment he says aloud "Sanctified ground?" He grabs a very old newspaper and starts to read. We hear him thinking "Here it is...from 1797... after the mob mutilated Bradford's body, he was buried in an unmarked grave in unsanctified ground...local preachers condemned Bradford as a follower of Satan...." He puts down the newspaper and thinks. "He wasn't buried in sanctified ground....but sanctified to him wouldn't mean the same thing...it would mean...." And then he realizes and says out loud "Where he was buried! If I can find his remains and destroy them.... that might be the key!" After a moment of thinking, Gladstone says "The cave! It must be the cave!" He puts on his coat and runs out.

Quentin asks Harrison why it would be so terrible for Petofi to know the truth. Harrison answers that "Petofi doesn't belong here. It's like you said, Benjamin, how my coming here has changed history. If Petofi is not returned to my own world in 1897, enough of the past will be altered that my own existence in that world might alter as well. It's too much of a chance to take. I've got to get him back there somehow, where he belongs." There is a knock at the door and Benjamin wonders who it could be at this hour. He opens the door and sees that it's Petofi, who says "Good evening, Mr. Collins. I trust that your cousin Harrison is available?" Benjamin lets Petofi in, and then Harrison sees him. Petofi sees them all looking at him, and he says "My, my, it seems we are all interested in my late night visit. I've only come to discuss a business matter with Mr. Harrison, but perhaps you both would be interested as well." Harrison says "I haven't any business to discuss with you." Petofi says "Oh, that's not true, Mr. Harrison. There is the matter of Miss Valery Stokes to discuss. And then, perhaps we could all continue your discussion of the strange nature of parallel time." Petofi smiles as the rest of them realize he's been eavesdropping.

Episode 1448

Aired: Wednesday January 12, 1972

Kathryn Leigh Scott's voiceover: "With the destruction of the demon that took the form of Kitty Soames and the rescue of Valery Stokes, one would think these would be happy times at Collinwood. But there is still a sense of dread in the great estate. For here in the year 1897, in the strange world of parallel time, comes a stranger, a stranger with awesome and mysterious powers, a stranger who is notoriously evil...."

Benjamin and Harrison are in the drawing room. Benjamin tells Harrison how his "recent brush with my own mortality" has made him think about more than the wealth of the estate. "I used to think I'd want to be master of Collinwood," he adds. "But now I'm just happy to be alive and in control of my own destiny." Harrison remarks how he's felt the same way "about....er, my side of the family's fortunes." Benjamin tells Harrison he's glad he came to Collinwood "to meet this part of the family. Despite all the recent tragedies, I would hope you've found us, interesting, at least." Harrison smiles and says he's found them "fascinating." Benjamin observes "Although I know you have a favorite. I'm sorry about Valery. Has her condition changed at all?" Harrison says no, but that he's "confident that the effects of those drugs will pass, eventually." Benjamin asks him if there's any other way of curing her, and Harrison looks thoughtful when answering "There is, but I'm not sure of the risks just yet."

After the titles, Rachel and Jamison enter the house. Jamison wears a black arm band and tells his mother that "father got a sunny spot in the family cemetery. I suppose that's good." Rachel tells Jamison that it's okay to cry, and that she wonders why he hasn't yet. He says he doesn't know. "Maybe because I know father wouldn't want me to cry. He used to get angry at me when I did." Quentin comes downstairs and tells Rachel that Hess will be there "any minute, to make it all official." Jamison asks Quentin what's going to happen, and Quentin tells him that Mr. Hess is going to have him sign a lot of papers that will "officially make you master of the realm, at least once you're twenty one." Jamison says he doesn't care about being master of Collinwood, and Quentin says "that's the spirit! But you might change your mind someday." Jamison says that he never wants to see people fighting over the money anymore, and that he'll make sure that never happens again. Quentin tells him that's admirable, but in the meantime, "Benjamin and myself will continue to look after the family affairs. We'll be sure to teach you how the cannery and the shipyards operate. Benjamin told me he was going to take you down there this week." Jamison gets excited and says he's never been allowed there before. They head into the drawing room, and Benjamin tells Jamison that "you'll need to get more familiar with how things operate." Quentin asks Harrison if Valery has improved, and Harrison says no. Quentin is about to suggest something when there is a doorknock. It's Hess, who comes in, saying "Finally everyone who needs to be here is here." He tells Jamison that "all you need to do is sign these papers. Everything will be taken care of for you." Jamison looks at Quentin and Benjamin, who look back at Jamison, who thinks a moment and says "Tell me what each of these papers does before I sign anything. I want to know." Hess nods, and says "Suspicious, aren't we? You're a Collins, all right...." As Hess shuffles the papers, Jamison says "Is there anything in the will about my mother?" Rachel says that she wasn't mentioned, and has "no claim on the estate." Jamison says it's not that, he just wants to make sure that "my mother stays here now." He looks at her and says "You will, won't you? You won't go away again?" She thinks about this.

Carl returns to the old house where Charity is napping on the couch. He wakes her and asks her if she's caught up on her rest from the previous night. She stands up and huge him. She asks him if he found Gladstone. "Yeah," he says. "We haven't figured out a way to stop Bradford yet, but we will. I thought I might find some of old Roderick's books on the occult. There must be some way of destroying that spirit." Charity remarks on how "horrible" the spirit of Bradford is, "lusting after killing the way....oh, the way that poor man was killed last night. I think he deliberately stepped in front of Gladstone as well....as if he was trying to save us both. The way he moaned at me...." Carl thinks a moment and tells Charity to sit down. He tells her how she had been in the book he found in the cave, and how that had predicted her murder, but when he found the book at Gladstone's, she was no longer listed. Charity says "Does that mean I'm safe?" Carl says he thinks so, but that it did list who died last night. Charity wonders why Carl looks so nervous, and Carl says "The book said it was your brother, Gregory." Charity is shocked, and doesn't believe it. Carl tells her that Gregory Trask was the name in the book, and the date was also the same. "But that didn't look like Gregory! His face...was deformed!" she says. Carl hugs her and tells her that perhaps Bradford's spirit did that to Gregory somehow. "It was him, I know it," he says. Charity says "Then he saved me...he sacrificed himself for me....." Carl says "Maybe." Charity says "I know you didn't like him, and you suspected him and your sister....I know money may have done horrible things to him but....he still had some good in him..." Carl hugs her and says he knows. "Because he was related to you." They kiss.

Carl is looking through some books in Roderick's old room when Harrison passes by. He asks Carl what he's looking for, and Carl says "If I told you, you'd think I was crazy." Harrison says "Try me." Carl says he's looking for a way to destroy an evil spirit. Harrison muses "What is it about this place that attracts so many evil spirits?" Carl answers that "the legends say the family is cursed fifteen different ways, maybe that's it." Harrison says how "my own recent brush with the occult still has me jittery." Carl says "That sounded like some bad business with Kitty." Harrison says "Well, it really wasn't Kitty. And once that flame at the altar was destroyed, it wasn't much of anything." Carl thinks a moment and says "One of these books said that spirits are often linked to things that keep them alive....like that flame, or some object." Harrison answers "Or this family, as you first theorized." Carl says "No, no...maybe that's what I need to look for. Maybe there's something in this world that is keeping Bradford's spirit alive. And if its destroyed, maybe his spirit will die with it!" He takes the book he was reading and leaves. Harrison continues on to Valery's room. She is sitting in bed, drawing in the air with her finger. He asks her how she is doing, and she smiles at him without saying anything. "Can you recognize me or say my name?" She just giggles and then hides her head under the blanket. Harrison thinks aloud "If only I could get you to a doctor in my own world, in my own time...there must be answer here..." Quentin enters and says he was looking for Harrison. Valery suddenly takes her head out from under the blanket and sees Quentin. She stares at him and studies him. "There's still no improvement," Quentin says. "We may have to send her someplace else." Harrison says no, but Quentin snaps "What else can we do? She needs professional help! What else would you have us do, lock her up in the tower room and never speak of her again? That would be insane!" Harrison says there's got to be an answer, and Quentin says "And both of us know what it is. It's Petofi. He's the only one with the power to restore her mind." Harrison says that he doesn't know if he can pay Petofi's price. Quentin says "What kind of a price can be too much to save her?" Harrison says he's afraid to ask. Quentin says "How much haven't you told me about that room? And about you?" Harrison thinks it over.

Rachel looks over her old room and seems to be settling in when Quentin stops in. He tells her he'd understand if she decided to leave Collinwood, and she says she might stay after all. "I don't want Jamison to grow up without a mother," she says. "It's bad enough he won't have his father anymore." Quentin says that "while I mean no disrespect to my late brother, he wasn't exactly the world's greatest father." Rachel says she knows, and thanks Quentin for looking after her son. "Something I intend to keep on doing," he says. "Though Benjamin has surprised me. I didn't think he'd be so amenable to the idea." Rachel says that Benjamin's near-death experience has changed him. "He's no longer as timid...worried about what everyone else thinks, what looks proper....he's his own man, now." Quentin says he doesn't know whether that's good or bad. Then he adds "I'm not sure I can handle you in this house without Edward around to make me behave." Rachel tells Quentin she'll make him behave instead. He snickers at the prospect. Benjamin enters the room and asks if he's interrupting anything. Quentin says no, and Rachel says "You're precisely on time." Quentin asks "On time?" Rachel takes a wrap and says that Benjamin has offered to take her into town tonight. "You don't mind?" Benjamin asks Quentin. Quentin, surprised, says no. Benjamin takes Rachel's hand and tells Quentin "Good. Getting away from this house for a while should do wonders for me." He leads her outside as Quentin is amazed. Meanwhile, Harrison sits with Valery, who is asleep. He looks at her and we hear him think "I've got to save you. You're the reason I stayed here. You may even....be the reason I was sent here." He starts to leave the room and then he thinks "Quentin must know everything!"

Episode 1447

Aired: Tuesday January 11, 1972

After a replay of Monday's close, Gladstone is about to bring the scimitar down close to Charity when Gregory, still horribly disfigured, steps in the way and begins to fight against Gladstone. Charity screams "Who is that? He's.....horrible!" Carl grabs her and gets her out of the way as the deformed Gregory looks at Charity, reaching his arms out moaning something that sounds like her name - and then Gladstone brings the scimitar down onto him! Charity screams, and Carl takes the opportunity to grab her and run away as Gladstone continues to slash away at Gregory Trask. At the old house, Carl gets Charity inside and locks the door. She grabs him and says "That was horrible! Horrible! Who was that? That thing..... whatever it was, it gave its life for us..." Carl nods and says they may never know what it was. Stanford comes down the stairs and asks what's wrong. Carl, amazed, says "Stanford! You're better! You're walking!" Stanford smiles and says "Yes, it seems so. The accursed power I was under seems to have gone." Stanford says he suddenly woke out of his coma, though he was keenly aware of everything going on around him while he was in it. He tells Carl he'll explain it all later, but first he must get to Collinwood to find Judith and warn the family about what happened to him. Charity tells him to be careful outside because the "masked killer" is out there, but Carl says "He wasn't in the book. He should be safe." Stanford wonders what this might mean as he leaves. Carl tells Charity that even though Bradford's spirit claimed a victim tonight, he still wants her to be safe in the secret room. He opens the bookcase, and she's not thrilled with spending the night in it. He says he'll stay with her, and she smiles.

The next morning, Carl and Charity come out of the secret room. He tells her that she will be safe "as long as there's daylight." Charity asks Carl what they can do about Gladstone. Carl says he doesn't know, and that he wishes he won't have to kill Gladstone to stop the curse since "he's just as much a victim of it as the people Bradford cuts down." He tells Charity to get some rest, and that he'll find Gladstone to "try to figure out an answer." Meanwhile at Collinwood, Harrison is having coffee in the drawing room and looking upset when Petofi enters the house. "I see you are looking well, Mr. Harrison," Petofi says. "May I assume that means the monster you were pursuing is no longer a threat?" Harrison frowns at Petofi and says "Not to me, but somehow I feel you already knew that." Petofi says that his "second sight only goes so far." Harrison snaps "Edward is dead! I might have been able to prevent that if you had helped me earlier!' Petofi says he could not offer help, and that "perhaps more would have died had you done nothing. Be thankful for small favors." Quentin enters and asks Petofi if he's finding the Young cottage "comfortable." Petofi says he is, and that he hasn't "slept so well in years, knowing my enemies can never find me here." Quentin remarks that "one of our enemies is gone now, but not without a price." Petofi tells Quentin he's sorry about Edward, "but as I pointed out to Mr. Harrison, even my powers have their limits. There was nothing I could have done to save him." Quentin looks at him skeptically. Judith and Stanford enter, and Quentin tells Stanford he's glad to see him "back to normal." Stanford says that he regained his mind after Kitty's power was destroyed. Judith says it was a horrible experience, but Stanford remarks "On the contrary, I feel inspiration for a new book. Perhaps a gothic horror story will be popular in these rational times." He turns to Quentin and tells him that he'll dedicate the book to Edward's memory. Quentin thanks him. Harrison says that "some kinds of stories are popular whatever the time." Petofi adds "Time is certainly an interesting thing, isn't it, Mr. Harrison?" Harrison gets a little nervous, but then introduces Petofi to Judith and Stanford. Stanford asks him if he is a "count in exile" from the Austro-Hungarian empire, and Petofi answers "I have adopted this fine place as my home, Mr. Miller. I find this house....fascinating." Judith and Stanford seem interested by Petofi, as Harrison and Quentin look at him suspiciously.

Carl finds Gladstone at the jail, exhausted, but looking through the books and newspapers they had gathered. Gladstone asks Carl "Did I kill last night?" Carl nods, and Gladstone says "Then that's it....I am the last victim....a fitting end to what I've been forced to do.." Carl tells Gladstone that "it didn't happen the way the book said though!" Gladstone asks why, and Carl tells him that the book predicted that Charity Trask would be the next victim, but instead, "it was someone else. I don't know who it was, I'd only seen him once before. He was horrible disfigured and deformed. He must have escaped from some nearby institution, poor devil." Gladstone wonders that if this means the book can be wrong, perhaps he won't have to die as well. Carl opens the book to show him, and then gasps when he gets to the key page. Gladstone asks him what's wrong, and Carl says "It's different! The page is different! Charity isn't on it anymore!" Gladstone takes the book and says "And look who is instead...Gregory Trask! We've got to warn him! We've got to warn him that he's next to die!" Carl stops Gladstone and says "No, I don't think we have to." Gladstone says "You don't think that deformed man was Gregory Trask?" Carl says "No one has seen him in days. And the man who died last night seemed to be following Charity! I wonder what happened to him...." Gladstone says they should tell Charity, but Carl isn't sure. "I know in my heart her brother conspired with my late sister to do some horrible things in pursuit of the Collins family fortune. I'd rather she remember him as he was. I'm sure what happened to him was the result of his own plans going awry." Gladstone sits and says "Then I will be the last victim." Carl says that the book must alter itself to conform to whatever Bradford' spirit does. Gladstone asks how you can defeat a spirit, and Carl says "I don't know. But there's got to be a way to put Bradford's spirit to rest or destroy it."

Petofi is arranging things in the Young cottage, which turns out to be the PT version of Tate's studio. Harrison enters and tells Petofi that he missed Edward's funeral. Petofi says that he would have felt like he was intruding upon the family, "especially since the Edward Collins I know is still alive in that other time." Harrison remarks that since Petofi has escaped his gypsy enemies and come to "this different timeband, you could go anywhere. Why are you staying here?" Petofi smiles and says that he's grown "fond" of the grounds at Collinwood, and that "somehow, my familiarity with the people here provides a good starting point for my new life here." Harrison laughs and says he doubts those are the only motives. Petofi says "You're quite right, Mr. Harrison. I have many motives for staying here, at least for the time being. Most of them have to do with you and your knowledge of that mysterious room in the East Wing of Collinwood. I must know who else knows the secret of that room, because in order to fully protect myself here from those gypsies you mentioned.... I will need to know how to prevent anyone from traveling between the timebands ever again." Harrison is apprehensive about this.

Episode 1446

Aired: Monday January 10, 1972

In a replay of Friday's close, Harrison is searching in the woods, and instead of seeing Benjamin ahead of him, he sees the altar through the trees. Edward stands over Quentin with the large club. Kitty begins to chant and tells Quentin that his "sacrifice will serve to the greater immortality. Once your shell is crushed upon this altar, the blood will flow into my eternal flame..." Quentin struggles as Edward raises the club, but Harrison runs out of the woods and screams for Edward to stop. Edward seems jolted by this, but does not drop the club. Kitty looks at Harrison and snarls "You will not save him... and by coming here, you have only added to our sacrifice." Harrison steps forward and says "I know how to destroy you." Kitty laughs and says "And I know how to destroy you as well." She smiles as Benjamin grabs Harrison from behind. Quentin sees this and gasps "Benjamin! You've taken Benjamin too!" Benjamin growls "You will be destroyed, Harrison Collins!" as Harrison tries to break free. Kitty laughs.

After the titles, Harrison struggles against Benjamin's grip as Kitty cackles away. "He is completely under my control, something your death will spare you from," she says. "All the millenia I slept beneath the sands of the desert waiting for a human form to assume....and this one provided such rich memories and avenues to endless power...." she goes on, admiring herself. Harrison sees Benjamin is entranced by her, and uses the opportunity to break free from his grip. He takes off his coat and pounds it over the flame on the altar, putting it out. Kitty screams "Stop him! Stop him!" and then sees her hand has begun to deteriorate. Edward drops the club and seems to feel dizzy. "Where...where am I? he says. Benjamin has also weakened, leaning against a tree. "What is happening to me?" he says. Quentin rolls off the altar and tells Harrison "that was quick thinking" but Kitty slams them backwards with a wave of her hand. "I still have enough power left to defeat you all," she shouts. "And I will draw upon more...." she croaks as she slithers towards Edward and starts to wrap her decrepit hands around his neck. He begins to scream and the altar flame relights itself! Edward begins to age as Kitty begins to laugh again. Benjamin steps away from the tree past Quentin and Harrison and looks at Kitty. She commands "Benjamin, come here!" as life continues to drain from the groaning Edward. "No...no..." he says softly as he begins to gain his senses and his strength. He looks at her hands, which fade from old and rotting to young and beautiful as Edward begins to look like an aged old man. "NO!" Benjamin shouts. "You're not Kitty! You never were!" She drops Edward and holds her hands out to Benjamin, commanding "Come to me, Benjamin. Now!" He blinks a moment, but then picks up the club that Edward dropped. "NEVER!" he screams, and brings the club down on the flame and its basin, smashing it to pieces. "DIE, DEMON, DIE!" he screams as he pounds away with the club. Kitty screams as the altar begins to crumble around her. Harrison pulls Quentin away from the falling rocks as Benjamin continues to smash what's left of the altar with the club - and then a skeletal hand with only bits of flesh attached touches his sleeve - he turns to see the true face of the Succubus - a skull with bloody and rotten black clumps of flesh falling from it, with white wiry hair flailing in the wind. A gravely voice says "Benjamin.....kiss me....." as it approaches him. He is horrified, and pulls away in time as what was once the beautiful Kitty crumbles into nothing more than a mass of white dust. Benjamin drops the club and looks at the broken altar, and then at Harrison and Quentin. "It's over...." he says as the howling wind begins to blow the dust away. "It's over."

Carl frantically arrives at Charity's house and demands to come in. She asks him what's wrong, and he tells her how Gladstone is possessed by Peter Bradford and is coming for her. She is terrified, but Carl says he has the gun and will protect her. She's afraid to stay in her house, and he tells her that he could hide her at the Collinwood old house. "There's a secret panel in the living room" he says. "You could hide in there!" Charity wonders if it will be safe to even try going there, but Carl says "I'll get you there, I'll protect you. Bradford's already taken too many people I love away from me." He starts to leave, but she takes his arm and asks "You love me?" He looks at her a moment and tells her he does, and she throws her arms around him. He tells her how he never thought he would think his life was worth anything again until he found her. "And my Nora is crazy about you too," he adds. He takes her out of the house.

Back at the altar, Quentin asks Benjamin if he's all right, and Benjamin says he doesn't know how he'll "ever be able to forget what I've seen here tonight." They hear a groan from behind a pile of rubble, and Harrison says "Edward" He runs over to him, and then grimaces. "Quentin....Benjamin....you'd better come here," he says. They do, and see that Edward looks nearly a hundred years old and is dying under some of the rubble of the altar. "Quentin...." Edward weakly says. Quentin kneels down and says "Edward, don't talk, save your strength." Edward says "I am dying...I know that.....you must promise me...." he begins to cough, and Quentin asks "What? What must I promise?" Edward looks at Quentin and says "My son....Jamison....tell him...tell him he's a good boy.....look after him. He'd want you to. I want you to...." Edward closes his eyes and dies. Quentin is touched that Edward's last thoughts were of Jamison. Benjamin wails that "It's my fault he's dead! If only I had stopped her earlier...." Harrison tells Benjamin it's not his fault because "you could not fight against the unearthly power she held over you." Quentin puts his hand on Benjamin's shoulder and says "Harrison is right. And we should be grateful to you, Benjamin. We'd all be dead now if you didn't destroy that.....thing." Benjamin says "Perhaps its time I took more control of the things happening around me." Quentin somberly says "Let's get Edward out of this damned place." They begin to clear the rubble around Edward's body.

Carl and Charity are walking through another part of the woods, Carl's gun at the ready. He tells her they're almost to the old house. She clutches him close and tells him that once she's there "she may never leave." He smiles, but this is cut short by Gladstone, who suddenly leaps out of some nearby brush waving the scimitar. "Charity Trask!" he says. "Thou will taste the blade of Bradford!" He starts to lunge at her, but Carl fires the gun at him. "Get back!" Carl says. "Gladstone! If you're in there, fight him! Fight back!" Gladstone takes another step forward and says "Gladstone is under my control, completely. He cannot even hear your pathetic cries..." Carl says "He'll understand what I have to do...." Carl fires the gun, and Gladstone clutches his chest and flies back. Charity screams, but Carl says "I had to do that...it was the only way to stop him." Charity says "Is it?" and screams again - because Gladstone has gotten back up and is laughing as he waves the scimitar! "Bradford will make this body carry him!" he says. Carl starts firing again, but Gladstone continues to smile as the bullets hit him, coming closer and closer with the scimitar held high....

Episode 1445

Aired: Friday January 7, 1972
The 200th episode!

After a replay of Thursday's close and the titles, Quentin continues to struggle as Kitty cuts her own finger with the knife and then touches the blood to Quentin's lips despite his squirming. Quentin spits it at her and she laughs. "Your blood will now refresh the altar and my power will grow..." she says. Edward stands motionless holding the large club. Back at Collinwood, Harrison demands Petofi tell him what has happened to Quentin, and Petofi says he can "help you save Quentin's life once you tell me the secret of how that room operates, switching between timebands." Harrison asks Petofi why he even cares "Now that you're here, and you claim you are well hidden from your enemies." Petofi says he simply hates not knowing something. Harrison says he'll find out on his own, since "I have nothing more to say about that room! It's as much a mystery to me as it is to you." He storms out of the room and Petofi follows. As Harrison moves through the hallway, he nearly slams into Benjamin. Harrison asks Benjamin if he has seen Quentin, and Benjamin says no. Harrison tells Benjamin that he believes Quentin is in great danger, and Benjamin curiously asks if Trask has returned. Petofi has caught up at this point, and says "Remember Harrison... you have few allies here. I'd hate to see you caught up in all of this." Benjamin asks Petofi "All of what?" Harrison wonders what Petofi meant by that and then looks at Benjamin suspiciously. "Quentin seems to have disappeared, Benjamin," Harrison says. "And Petofi seems to know more than he's willing to tell." Harrison walks away and Petofi says to Benjamin "I believe the strain of what has happened to Miss Valery has clouded Harrison's judgment. I have no idea what he means." Petofi goes into his room and closes the door as Benjamin thinks a moment. "Petofi knows more than he lets on....I must let Kitty know this....immediately." He moves quickly in the opposite direction. Harrison, who had been hiding around a corner, thinks "I was right to gamble on Benjamin.... he knows something...." Harrison begins to follow him.

Benjamin enters Kitty's room and doesn't find her, and then thinks "Kitty is nowhere...and neither is Quentin or Edward for that matter....Edward! Could Kitty have chosen him over me? It's not possible....but what could she possibly want with Quentin unless....unless!" He suddenly runs out of the room and Harrison follows him again. Benjamin enters Roderick's room and sees the books on the floor among the pieces of the vase. He thinks a moment, and then steps out of the room. Harrison enters and sees the broken vase and the books. He picks up a piece of the vase and says "Blood...." He looks at the open book and begins to read "...to destroy the succubus, one must destroy the source of the demon's power, usually contained in the flame of her altar..." He picks up the book and begins reading, his eyes growing wider. Out loud he says "the victims are young men who are aged prematurely by the powers of this demon..." He slams the book shut and we hear him think "Benjamin....Benjamin knows....I must follow him!" We cut to Benjamin coming down the stairs and leaving the house. Harrison follows, and once he leaves, Petofi steps out near the railing overlooking the foyer. "Yes....you are a very clever young man, Mr. Harrison...." he chuckles. Meanwhile back at the prison, Gladstone cannot figure out why he would be the final victim. "How could I kill myself in such a fashion?" he says from behind his cell bars. "It makes no sense at all!" Carl is still looking through the old papers and journals and then seems to find something. "Wait a minute...one of these names is mentioned twice in an older newspaper...." He looks at another paper and says "Look at this! The body of one of the victims was discovered by someone who died the same way five years later!" Gladstone asks to see, and Carl hands him the papers as Gladstone reads. "The first person to discover the fifth victim died five years later..." He goes through some of the papers and then says "And then they were the fifth victim!" Carl thinks a moment and says "Gladstone....five years ago....who was the first person to find the body of the last victim?" Gladstone thinks a moment and then says "It was me....I was only a constable, and I was the first person on the scene....." Carl says "That's it! That's how he chooses the next person to possess! Whoever finds the final victim!" Gladstone looks scared as he says "And then they become the final victim in the next cycle...meaning whoever finds my body first will be the next person to suffer this horrible curse!" Carl thinks a moment, and then Gladstone says "Unless...what if you looking in that book and seeing it makes you that person?" Carl says it's ridiculous, but Gladstone says "What if it's true, Carl? What if it's true?" Carl wonders.

Benjamin walks through the woods with Harrison behind him. "Where could he be heading?" Harrison thinks. "He must know where Quentin is somehow...why else would he react this way?" Harrison keeps moving through the woods as we cut back to Quentin on the altar. Kitty kneels before the walls of the altar and chants holding the knife. Quentin tells her how he'll kill her once he gets free. "You will never be free of me now, Quentin," she says. "Once your outer shell is destroyed, you shall always be a part of me. This is a time for rejoicing." Quentin tells her she's "mad" and then realizes what she means by "outer shell" as Edward thumps the club on the altar steps. Back at the jail, Gladstone is starting to nod off and tries to stop himself, moaning that he doesn't want "Bradford to take him" again. Carl tells him that he's safely locked up and shouldn't worry. Laughter begins to cackle around Carl, the same as we have heard before. We hear the voice now, much clearer and sounding like Bradford (Roger Davis) "You will never destroy me.... I must exact my payment for my injustice....." Carl yells "I'll destroy you, Bradford! For what you did to my Jenny and my sister! I'll stop you and send you back to hell where you belong!" Suddenly the spirit of Peter Bradford appears before Carl, laughing. Gladstone is terrified as the spirit moves through the bars. He backs away, but when the spirit puts out its hand to touch Gladstone, he falls down, asleep. "In his sleep, he is mine," Bradford says as he starts to fade away. As he does, Gladstone stirs and awakens. He stands and says "Peter Bradford lives again!" and begins to laugh. Carl is shaken, but says "Live behind those bars, Bradford! Your killing days are over!" Suddenly, the scimitar materializes in the air in front of Gladstone, who gleefully takes it with a smile. Carl can't believe it as Gladstone slashes at the lock of the cell, and the door opens. Carl looks around for a gun, but Gladstone waves the scimitar at Carl, backing him into a corner. Gladstone laughs. "Do you think your measly bars can hold someone of my power? But you need not worry, you are not in my book.....yet. But now I have a date with someone who is....." Carl gasps "Charity! I won't let you kill her! I won't, do you hear?" Gladstone laughs and runs out of the room. Carl fumbles through the desk and finds a gun before running after Gladstone.

Harrison is searching in the woods, and instead of seeing Benjamin ahead of him, he sees the altar through the trees.

Episode 1444

Aired: Thursday January 6, 1972

Louis Edmonds' voiceover: "The terror to be found in the strange and dangerous world of parallel time in the year 1897 continues to unfold at the great estate of Collinwood. Count Petofi has found his way into this world, and has exacted property from this timeband's Quentin Collins in return for revealing a horrifying secret.... a revelation that will lead to nothing else but certain death....."

After a replay of Wednesday's close, Petofi tells Quentin not to look away from the vision, but to "look long and carefully at it" instead. Quentin yells "You mean to tell me that Kitty is really that....that thing in the picture?" Petofi restores the normal image on the portrait. "She most assuredly is, my boy, I realized it as soon as I met her. All of your lives are in danger....that is, unless you learn to trust....me..." he says with a smile...

After the titles, Quentin tells Petofi he's "not sure" if he can trust him or not. Petofi laughs and calls him wiser than he looks, "but in fighting a creature of the supernatural, one must have an ally in the black arts to make up for their own mortality." Quentin says "My uncle may have discovered Kitty's secret before he died. He may have been killed because he also discovered how to destroy her!" Petofi tells him "A lot of possibilities....any one of which could not be true." Quentin asks Petofi if he wants money. Petofi says he has no need of wealth, but what he wants is knowledge. "Mr. Harrison trusts you, Quentin. He will tell you what he knows of the strange phenomena in that mysterious room what he doesn't want to tell me. But I must know." Quentin tells Petofi that he won't "spy" against Harrison. "He's only tried to help me since he arrived here from New York, and if that room was what interested him in his Collinsport relatives, than so be it! You have your payment already. I'll find out how to stop her, whatever she is." Happy with his fib, Quentin leaves Petofi. Petofi thinks out loud "It seems you are quite different from your counterpart, Quentin Collins...much more a man of honor.... that is most troubling...." Meanwhile, Carl and Gladstone enter the Collinsport jail (or gaol, as the case may be). Gladstone tells Carl the keys to the holding cell are in the top drawer of his desk. Carl asks Gladstone if he really thinks this is the best thing to do, and Gladstone insists he must be locked up before sundown. "Even if the spirit possesses me, I'll be locked in the cell. Do it!" he insists. Carl locks him in, and Gladstone tells him to start looking through the book. "It's a book of all the victims...but the terrifying thing is...." Carl asks what, and then says "Did you add the new victims into this book when you were under his power?" Gladstone shakes his head and says "Worse...look towards the end.... the victims are already there!" Carl can't believe it, but Gladstone tells him that the book lists victims yet to come. Carl flips through the pages and then is horrified. He gasps "After the page with Alice Collins is.....Charity Trask!"

Quentin is searching through Roderick's books and notes frantically. We hear him think "It's got to be here somewhere...I know that old man was onto something...." He finds a small beaten up old book named "Ancient Demons & Monsters By Dr. Judah Zachary" and begins to thumb through it. He finds a page dogeared and begins to read to himself "Succubus: a demonic spirit that takes the form of a beautiful young woman, luring men to their deaths by prematurely aging them, taking their remaining years and using them to attain immortality....." His eyes open wide as he turns the page. "The Succubus in its natural form appears as an old hag near death, and can only be destroyed by..." He's suddenly interrupted by Edward, who demands "Put those books down." Quentin snaps "Edward, have you lost your mind?" Edward knocks the book from his hand and when Quentin fights back, he realizes "Edward! You're under her control!" Kitty enters the room and says "Yes, Quentin. Edward is mine, just as his son will be, and just as this estate will be." She nods to Edward who cracks Quentin over the head with a vase, knocking him out. "You are protected now," Edward says as Kitty looks over the unconscious Quentin. "I will not be safe as long as he threatens me....he seemed to know something was wrong as soon as I arrived. Take him and follow me." Edward hesitates a moment, and says "Why am I doing this....it's like I cannot help myself...." Kitty caresses his face and says "Do as I say Edward...you have no other choice." Edward seems to weaken and he starts to pick Quentin up. "Quentin....dear Quentin...." Kitty says with an evil smile. "You shall make a fine sacrifice!"

Carl enters the jail carrying a load of papers. He tells Gladstone that he found as much on as many of the names as he could. "Most of them were murder victims, all right," he says. "But the first name in the book....the first name has a very strange history...." Gladstone says "I thought about starting with that, but I blacked out." Carl takes out a very old journal of sorts and begins to read "Listen to this...it's from 1797, a hundred years ago. 'Collinsport authorities report the death of one Peter Bradford, convicted for the crime of witchcraft....he was proven to have taken part in human sacrifices where throats were slit and hands cut off from his victims....the Collinsport authorities were to have hanged Bradford by the neck until dead, but a vigilante mob broke into the prison and exacted a punishment on Bradford fitting to his crimes....witnesses say he laughed as his own throat was slashed and vowed revenge on Collinsport throughout all eternity..." Carl puts the journal aside and says "All the victims killed have been killed the same way....it's his spirit, it must be! That's how he gets his revenge!" Gladstone thinks a moment and says "The voice I heard in the cave.... it had power over me...." Carl tells Gladstone "Now that we know who it is, we can find a way to stop it before....." Gladstone says "Before anything happens to Charity?" Carl says yes, and opens the victim book to say that it doesn't always have to come true, when he suddenly notices something. "There's something different...." he says. "The page after Charity! It was blank before, and now it's not!" Gladstone says "What happened? Not another victim.....but wait...there were always five before the killing stopped...there have only been three so far...the spirit of Bradford will want two more before sleeping for five more years....who is it? Who does it say?" Carl looks at Gladstone slowly and then shows him. "It's you," he says. Gladstone is shocked.

Harrison is looking for Quentin in his room and finds Petofi there, waiting. "Where is Quentin?" Harrison asks, suspiciously. Petofi says that he's done nothing with him. Harrison snaps "You were expecting me to come in here, which means you know something I want to know, and you obviously want something in return." Petofi stands and remarks on what a "smart young man" Harrison is. Angrily, Harrison demands Petofi tell him what has happened to Quentin. "Has Trask returned?" Petofi says "Nothing of the kind. Quentin has managed to get himself into a deadly situation all by himself." Harrison wants to know what "deadly" refers to, and Petofi says he'll be glad to "offer my services in exchange for the secrets you have yet to reveal to me." Harrison says he has no secrets, and Petofi chuckles. "You may also have no Quentin then, which means you will have no friend at Collinwood besides me." Harrison considers that as we dissolve to the altar in the woods. The flame burns strong as Edward lays Quentin on top. Kitty wears the ankh on a headress as she stands over Quentin, who opens his eyes. "Why can't I move?" he says, struggling. Edward stands silently to the side as Kitty leans over Quentin and says "Because you are now under my power, Quentin. And soon, you will be part of my power forever...." Quentin yells "You're not Kitty Soames! I saw Kitty Soames die! You're a demon my Uncle knew about!" He continues to struggle as she holds a knife in the flame. "Your blood will refresh this altar of my power as will my own..." she says. Quentin yells at Edward, who doesn't respond, except to pick up a large club. Kitty says "It's useless Quentin....Edward is mine, forever....as your soul shall be...." She starts to approach with the knife as Quentin cannot move.

Episode 1443

Aired: Wednesday January 5, 1972

After a replay of Tuesday's close and the titles, Gladstone has gotten up and leads Carl towards the hidden trap door in the woods. Carl clears the leaves and is about to go in when Gladstone says that he cannot follow him inside. "I don't want to go in there and change again...." Carl asks Gladstone why the "evil force" picked him, and Gladstone says he's not sure. "The only clue I found in there was a book... it's a book listing all the victims of the killer, going back years...and it lists victims yet to come....I'm warning you..." Carl thinks about this a moment, and says "I'll get that book and bring it out of there." Gladstone stops him and says "The scimitar... the killing blade...is down there too. Perhaps if we destroy that..." Carl tells him to wait there, and then starts down into the cave. Meanwhile, Lucy waits at the fountain and then Quentin shows up. He tells her that he got her note and wants to know what is so "urgent." Lucy tells him that she wanted to make sure no one could hear them, and Quentin asks her if this is to be a romantic meeting. "Enough!" she says. "I have to tell you this because I think you're the only one I can trust." Quentin asks her what secrets he would be most trustworthy with. She tells him it's about Beth, and "the way she died." Quentin says that according to Carl, Gladstone must have done it while possessed. Lucy says that the only reason Beth died was because she was running from "whatever Kitty is." Quentin asks her what she means, and she answers "You know it, deep down. Kitty is different since her return. There's something wrong about her...and everyone who seems to get too close dies! Even Jamison almost...." Quentin grabs her and says "You mean that Kitty had something to do with that night you followed Jamison into the woods?" Lucy says she's positive of it, and Quentin says "That altar you mentioned... I wonder if that's what my Uncle Roderick was onto.... I'm going to look over his notes and books. Perhaps he left a clue behind." Lucy tells Quentin to be careful, and that she's not sure whether or not they can trust Benjamin. Quentin asks her why, and Lucy says he's been acting strangely lately, and seemed "to do nothing" when I told him what had happened with Jamison. Quentin thinks a moment and says "And he was the one who found Beth.....I'll be wary of him." Before Quentin leaves, Lucy hugs him. He tells her that everything will be all right. Up in the window, we see Edward has been listening.

In the cave, Carl looks around carrying a lantern. He is shocked by the shelf of skeleton hands leading towards the end, where the hands are fresh and bloody. He finds the table with the book on it, as well as the cape, mask and scimitar hanging on the wall. We hear him think "All those bones....must be from all the victims...why? Why are they here? This book...the answers must be in it..." He picks up the book and starts to look through it. We hear him think "Gladstone was right! These people go back over a hundred years....every five years there are five names..." He starts to turn the pages faster until he hears an eerie sound. He slams the book shut and grabs the lantern. "Who is it? Who is there?" he shouts. "Show yourself!" A strange glow appears near the mask, and a note suddenly appears on the table. Carl picks it up and it says "You cannot stop me." Carl angrily crumples the note and says "I can stop you! Whatever you are! You're nothing without that sword!" But as Carl tries to grab the sword from the wall, it vanishes, and he hears laughter. He grabs the book and runs out the way he came in. Outside in the woods, Carl climbs out of the trap door carrying the book. Gladstone sees that he has it, and says "You got it! What happened? Did you see anything? Did anything happen to you?" Carl says he saw the scimitar disappear, and tells Gladstone about the note. "He warned you but didn't possess you... he only possesses me...why? Why?" Carl says he doesn't know, but that they should investigate the book to see if they can figure out "who the evil spirit is." Gladstone asks Carl how he can be so helpful "after what happened to your sister...and your wife. How do you know that wasn't me as well?" Carl thinks a moment and says "After being in that cave, I know you're not to blame. And you were with me the night Jenny was killed. This spirit has probably possessed others before you, going back all the years in this book." Carl takes Gladstone away, and then we see the same glowing over the trap door begin to follow them.

Quentin is looking through Roderick's books and searching through some drawers. "If I know my uncle, he kept some sort of diary," Quentin thinks. "But where could it be?" He starts to look through an armoire when Edward enters and asks him what he's doing. Quentin answers that he's looking for Roderick's diaries and that "it's very important." Edward scoffs as to what "crazy old Roderick" could have been writing about that's so important, and Quentin says "You might want to listen a moment, dear Edward, because I think your son relates to it." Edward demands to know what he means, and complains that "I haven't seen my son in over a week since you conspired with his no good mother to take him away from here. You claimed that other will made him heir to the estate. Well, as his father, I have the right to..." Quentin cuts him off with "You have the right to shut up, Edward. With Trask around, I feared for the boy's safety, and I think what Valery has been through has proved me right. But now I'm worried about someone else..." Edward asks "Who? Who would dare harm my son?" Quentin tells Edward "I'd rather not say." Edward goes into a hissy fit over not being told when it's his only son, and then Quentin finds a diary inside the armoire. He smiles and starts to look through it. Edward says "Is the answer in there? Roderick knew who wanted to threaten my son?" Quentin tells Edward "I'll handle it," but Edward snatches the diary out of Quentin's hand and looks at some of it. Quentin demands it back, but Edward is suddenly horrified. "You must never know this! Never!" Edward starts to tear up the diary, but Quentin grabs it from him saying "Edward, have you gone mad? What's the matter?" Edward struggles, and then Quentin sees a page in the diary and says "Kitty! Kitty Soames! Roderick knew...." Edward backs away as Quentin adds "But how did you know?" Edward tells Quentin "Kitty must not be harmed! Never! Never!" and then runs from the room. Quentin goes out into the hallway shouting after Edward, and runs right into Petofi. Quentin tries to go after Edward, but Petofi stops him, saying "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation with Edward. He reminds me very much of someone else I once knew. Stubborn, yet innocent." Quentin tells Petofi he has to find out what made Edward so frightened, and Petofi says "I believe he is frightened of Miss Kitty Soames. And my dear Quentin, you should be too." Quentin wonders what he means.

Quentin has followed Petofi into his small room demanding to know "what you know about Kitty Soames. And how do you know it?" Petofi reminds Quentin of "the powers at my disposal that you observed. I met Miss Soames earlier and immediately understood the situation here." Quentin snaps "Why didn't you come to me immediately if the situation is as dire as Edward thinks?" Petofi says that he was tired, and "besides, I was personally in no danger. How much, after all, should I interfere in the happenings here?" Quentin tells Petofi that "If Kitty is a threat to my nephew, someone I happen to be quite fond of, I want to know what I can do about it. Now why is everyone so terrified of her? I thought I saw her die in Asia months ago, yet she turned up here alive. I know that must have something to do with this. She doesn't act like herself, why?" Petofi says "I can tell you everything you want to know, Quentin, but I must exact a favor from you in return." Quentin humphs and says that "Harrison told me you were like this." Petofi says how impressed he is with Harrison's "familiarity with me in such a short time. But that is not the issue at hand." Quentin asks Petofi what he wants. "You have control over the Collins property at present, am I correct?" Quentin answers "Not all of it." Petofi says "I understand there is a small cottage near the estate that is unoccupied. I have very little in this.....part of the world. If I were to be able to make my temporary home there instead of in these cramped quarters, I should be most grateful." Quentin is not sure what to make of this. "The old Young cottage? That hasn't been lived in for years." Petofi says "It will suit my purposes well." Quentin says "I don't see any problem with you living there. I doubt anyone else will care. Tell me what I want to know about Kitty and it's yours, Petofi." Petofi smiles and says "An easy bargain to make, eh? Come over here." Petofi leads Quentin to a painting on the wall of a young woman. "Look here at this painting, Quentin... I have quite an affinity for portraits....look at the young face of this anonymous woman....." Petofi says. "She's not anonymous, she's my great aunt Daphne," Quentin answers. "Just look at it, Quentin...." Petofi says. "Look at it and you will have your answer...." Quentin skeptically looks at the painting until the face becomes the face of Kitty. Quentin gasps at the change and says "Kitty! I see Kitty's face in the portrait!" Petofi says "Yes...and now you will see her as she truly is...." Quentin watches as Kitty's face morphs into a hideous scraggly old weatherbeaten hag face, the skin barely hanging on the rotting skull underneath.... Quentin yells "NO!" in horror as he looks away.
