Episode 1322

Aired: Tuesday July 20, 1971

After a replay of Harrison's arrival and the titles, Roger asks Carolyn how Liz would "ever know" that Harrison resembles their father before ever meeting him. Sebastian interrupts "Perhaps she had an episode of second sight." Roger scoffs at this, then tells Harrison "You'll have to forgive much of my family here, Harrison. They all seem to have marvelous imaginations and beliefs in the absurd." Harrison smiles and answers "I've always thought a vivid imagination is good for the soul," before turning to Carolyn and saying "You must be Carolyn" while kissing her hand. She says yes, and asks him how he knew, and his quickly answers "Well, I must admit I know a little about the family here in Collinsport." He turns to Sebastian and holds out his hand, and Sebastian introduces himself. Roger says he will go upstairs and fetch the rest of the family as Carolyn leads Harrison towards the drawing room as he continues to look around. He sees Barnabas' portrait and stops. "Who is that?" he asks Carolyn. Carolyn answers "That's Barnabas Collins, one of our ancestors. You'll meet his descendant while you're here, I'm sure. Our cousin Barnabas and his wife live in the old house on the estate." "Oh?" Harrison says. "Yes, I would like to meet them, of course." Sebastian says "Our Barnabas looks almost exactly like his ancestor. The family resemblance is remarkable." Carolyn adds "Uncanny, as my Uncle Roger would say," with a laugh. Harrison, still studying the portrait, says "How interesting," with a sly smile.

Liz enters the drawing room and sees Harrison, and exclaims "Harrison Collins! Welcome to Collinwood!" Harrison takes her hand and kisses it, impressing her. "You needn't be so formal," she says, but he answers "How else can I greet the beautiful mistress of Collinwood?" Liz says "That's very sweet of you," and remarks to Roger that Harrison does indeed bear a resemblance to their father. Alan enters the room and Liz introduces Harrison to him, and Alan whispers to Liz that Harrison "may look like your father, but so far is a lot friendlier." Liz tells Alan to "stop that!" and Roger pours everyone drinks. Harrison tells Liz that he's happy to see her looking so healthy, after hearing about her recent surgery from Carolyn "just now." "She's going to stay that way, as well" Alan adds. Roger asks Harrison what he "does," and Harrison answers "I've been in the business world for many years, Roger. But now I've earned enough from investments that have paid off, and I think I will travel for a while." Roger smiles and says he envies him. "I managed to sneak in a trip to Europe last year, but it's always so difficult to get away." "How long do you intend to stay in Collinsport?" Liz asks. Harrison says he's not sure, "especially since the more I see of it, and the more of my family I find here, the more I am fascinated by it all." David enters the room, and Harrison cuts himself off in mid-sentence by looking at him and saying "David! You must be David!" David wonders who Harrison is.

David says yes, that's who he is, and Harrison apologizes for surprising him, "just that I had learned everyone's names, and I knew you must be David. I'm Harrison Collins, a cousin from New York." "New York?" asks David. "I've only been there once, and it was huge! That must be a great place to live." Harrison says it is, and David says he'd like to go there with Quentin, but he's leaving for boarding school soon. "Really?" says Harrison. "Not so soon that we won't be able to get to know each other more." "Not for a while," says David. Roger tells Harrison that Quentin is another cousin who he will meet, "though I think he is out with his lady friend this evening." Liz asks Harrison where he is staying, and Harrison answers "in town." Liz invites Harrison to stay at Collinwood, adding "after all, you are family and we have plenty of room." Harrison answers "I think I'd like that, Elizabeth. I think I'd like that a lot," while smiling at David.

Harrison is unpacking some bags in a room as David enters with a book. "I found that book you were asking about, about the family history," David says. Harrison thanks him, and adds "Something tells me you know a lot about the family history and all the nooks and crannies of this house." David says he does, and Harrison says "Well, then I think you're the perfect person to give me the complete tour. I'm sure you know where all the most interesting stories are found." David thinks a moment and says "Well, sometimes it's best to leave some stories alone and parts of this house unexplored. I've learned that the hard way sometimes." Harrison laughs a little, and then looks at David and says "I think I'd like to explore the whole thing, David. One thing you should know about me is that I'm not afraid of anything." "Really?" David asks. Harrison says "Yes, really. I'd like to see the whole estate." David says he can show him "all sorts of stuff" but that "you'll have to ask Barnabas if you want to see the old house." Harrison remembers "Oh yes, your cousin Barnabas, from England, lives there." David answers "Yes. He's really nice, you'll like him." Harrison says "I'm sure I will," while hanging some clothes. "But be ready when you go there. He kept the old house original, with no electricity, no telephone. It's like he wants to live in another century." Harrison looks intrigued and says "Does he? Why is that?" David suddenly gets shy and says he doesn't know, and Harrison smiles and answers "Well, I would certainly like to meet this Barnabas Collins."

Episode 1321

Aired: Monday July 19, 1971

In a repeat of Friday's close, Julia has come to the old house and has no interest that David saw Sarah's ghost again. Barnabas asks why, and Julia says that she was "coming over to say her final goodbyes since I'll be leaving very early tomorrow morning." Barnabas pleads "There's nothing I can say to get you to change your mind then? Not even if we need you to help us now?" Julia turns away from him and says "No, I can't let myself get involved in all of this anymore." Angelique smiles at this statement, and Julia begins to open the front door. Suddenly, the door flies from her hand and SLAMS shut - ghostly wind kicks up and the candles in the room all blow out. "Barnabas! What is happening?" Julia shouts. We then hear Jeremiah's dark laughter, as Barnabas yells "Jeremiah! You will begone from my house!" He tries to find the medallion Stokes left him, but before he can do anything, we hear Jeremiah's booming voice: "Barnabas Collins! I will have my revenge! Tonight, we will duel again... only this time without a spell from Angelique to spare you and murder me...." Angelique yells for him to "Return to your grave! I command you!" We hear more of his laughter, and then Julia screams when, suddenly, she sees the bloody bandaged ghost of Jeremiah, standing in front of Barnabas, aiming an 18th century pistol at his heart.....

After the titles, Jeremiah's ghost stands pointing the pistol at Barnabas, and Angelique suddenly steps in front of him. Barnabas yells "No! I cannot let him harm you!" and pushes her aside as Jeremiah fires the gun. Barnabas clutches his chest as both Julia and Angelique scream, and we see he is bleeding. Jeremiah begins to laugh, and bellows "Do you think it will be this easy, Barnabas? You are gravely mistaken...." before vanishing. When he vanishes, Angelique grabs Barnabas and asks him if he's all right, and Julia pushes her aside with "I must examine him! I am a doctor!" to which Angelique snaps "I am his wife, Julia!" Barnabas, however, takes his hand away from his chest, and he is not bleeding. He is shaken, but not shot. Julia says "Barnabas! You were shot! I saw him shoot you at point blank range!" Barnabas slowly stands and answers "It seems I was shot with a phantom bullet, Julia. Jeremiah won't let me die so easily or quickly. It seems he wants our suffering to linger." Angelique hugs him with an "Oh, Barnabas!" as he tells her he's all right. Barnabas, holding Angelique, tells Julia that he still "needs her" to help fight this "evil spirit." Julia sees him holding Angelique tightly, and turns away, weakly answering "I cannot help you this time, Barnabas," but then turns back and gets more strength in her voice to add "You'll have to get help from your wife." Angelique turns and scowls at Julia.

Angelique snaps "I no longer have my powers, Julia. I can only help him as a loving mortal wife." Julia gets cold and says "Well, I promised myself that I would no longer concern myself with the affairs of Collinwood. I came here to say goodbye before I return to Windcliffe, and I have." Barnabas moves towards her, and begs her not to leave in such an "angry and jealous mood." Julia simply says "I'm sorry," and leaves the old house. Angelique is happy she's gone, but Barnabas says "I wish you wouldn't fight with her so much. I think we may yet need her help in fighting Jeremiah." Angelique angrily answers "I wish you didn't think you needed her so much, Barnabas. I may not be a doctor, and I may no longer have my powers, but I do have experience with these things. I will not let Jeremiah come between us. I will not!" Barnabas thinks about this. We cut to the Collinwood foyer as Carolyn and Sebastian enter. Sebastian is interested in what Carolyn has told him about David seeing Sarah's ghost again, and discusses the possibility with her. Carolyn says that she believes David, but doesn't want to bring the subject up in front of Roger since it will only lead to an argument. Roger comes out of the drawing room and says hello, and then asks Carolyn "what will lead to an argument?" Carolyn says "Nothing, just Sebastian and I were discussing.... clothes. We agreed that a lot of the newer fashions are quite attractive, and we assumed you would disagree." Roger laughs a little and says "You are certainly right about that!" Roger heads upstairs as Carolyn and Sebastian head into the drawing room. Sebastian comments how it's unusual for any member of the Collins family not to believe in the paranormal after "all that's happened here." Carolyn says that her Uncle Roger is "merely stubborn." Sebastian says that he'd like to talk to David about what he's seen, and comments "I for one would certainly like to see this 'Sarah'....."

Julia enters Collinwood and sees Sebastian and Carolyn in the drawing room. She says hello, and Carolyn tells her that the family will "miss you when you leave us tomorrow." Julia says she will miss the family too, but "won't be that far away." Julia says goodnight, but then stops and turns to Sebastian. She tells him that he should go see Barnabas "about something you might be able to help him with." Sebastian asks what it could be, and then remarks that "I owe Barnabas my life, in a way. I guess I should help him any way I can." Julia says "That's very loyal of you, Mr. Shaw. I'd rather Barnabas told you about it himself, but I thought I'd let you know before I left here." Julia leaves the drawing room just as Roger returns. She says goodnight to Roger, and he remarks that he's "jumpy every time he hears the front door." Julia asks why, and Roger says that "it's possible that our New York cousin Harrison will be arriving tonight. I must admit I'm curious to meet him. You may want to stay up a little longer, Dr. Hoffman. He sounds like a fascinating young man." Julia considers this.

Sebastian tells Carolyn that he'll "visit Barnabas tomorrow and find out what is going on" as Roger asks "Don't tell me Barnabas wants you to do his horoscope, Shaw!" Sebastian answers that he's not sure, but "knowing Mr. Collins, he probably wants my opinion on some old volume of books he's been looking at." There is a knock at the front door, and Roger says "That must be our relative!" Roger, Carolyn and Sebastian move into the foyer and Roger answers the door. A young dark haired man (Keith Prentice) stands there and says "Good evening. I'm Harrison Collins. I've just arrived from New York." Roger introduces himself, and shakes Harrison's hand. He introduces Carolyn and Sebastian to Harrison, who says hello while looking around the foyer in fascination. Roger remarks "It's uncanny! A distant cousin none of us have ever met, and yet I would know you as a Collins the moment I laid eyes on you!" Harrison smiles and asks "Why is that, Roger?" Roger answers "You look just like my father when he was young! I'll have to show you the photographs." Carolyn suddenly remembers "That's what mother said!" Sebastian asks her what she means, and Carolyn said "Before she got sick. Mother said that he would look like your father!" Roger says "How would she know that? She's never seen him!" Carolyn says she doesn't know. Harrison listens to this and looks at Carolyn, curious.

Episode 1320

Aired: Friday July 16, 1971

David Selby's voiceover: "Many changes are taking place at the great house of Collinwood. Enemies of old have rediscovered even older love and have married, but this has stirred the shadows of the past. An angry spirit has begun to haunt them in order to put their love asunder, but on this day, young David Collins has also encountered a spirit from his past, one as innocent as the young child she once was...."

David and Quentin are coming down the stairs in the foyer as Quentin is asking him where he'd like to have lunch in the village. David says he wants to stop at the drugstore and get his film developed first since "he has to prove something to everyone." When Quentin asks him what, all David says is "You'll see!" Roger comes out of the drawing room and tells them to hold up for a moment since he has something important to discuss with David. Quentin says that they are only heading out for lunch, but Roger says that he must speak to David right away.

After the titles, Roger tells David that he's very upset about the argument they had over seeing Sarah, but David tells Roger that after the film is developed, "you'll see I'm telling the truth." Quentin asks who Sarah is, and Roger answers "a figment of David's imagination that we thought was an episode long over." Quentin looks at David, who simply says "I didn't imagine her." Roger says "Well, I don't wish to talk about that anymore. What I really wanted to talk to you about, David, was your schooling." David asks why, and Roger says that he has gotten word from the boarding school that they are having a limited summer session, beginning in about a week. "You could go there for this session and see how you like it," Roger adds. David answers "You're trying to send me away! You're trying to send me away since you don't think I saw Sarah!" Roger says that's "certainly not true" and that "I found out about this days ago, I just haven't had the chance to tell you. I thought you might enjoy going, David. Hallie Stokes is there, there are other children your age. It will be a wonderful experience for you to get away from Collinwood for a while and be more responsible for yourself." David is still thinking his father wants to get rid of him, but Quentin says "You know, your father is right David." David says "Not you too!" Quentin answers "No, no, no. I don't know about this Sarah, but I do know that you're old enough to be more responsible for yourself and live on your own for a while." David likes the sound of that, but says he'd "like to think about it." Quentin tells him to wait in the car while he gets the keys. David goes out the front door, and Quentin asks Roger about Sarah. Roger says that he'd rather not discuss it, only that David claimed he had seen the ghost of a little girl years ago, "right about the same time he imagined all sorts of horrible things about Barnabas as well. It's best to leave it all in the past." Roger heads upstairs as Quentin stops a moment to look at Barnabas' portrait on the wall before going outside.

Julia enters Collinwood, but before she can get upstairs, Quentin asks her into the drawing room and closes the doors. He tells her that David saw "someone named Sarah, who Roger insisted does not exist. I had the feeling you might know more about this." Julia is surprised, and says "Sarah! David saw her? When? Where?" Quentin asks Julia who Sarah is, and Julia says "She's Barnabas' sister. No one has seen her ghost in years." Quentin asks "Not even Barnabas?" Julia says "No, Sarah swore she would not appear to him again unless he had changed. I saw her, I was there when she made that promise. " Quentin laughs a little, and says "Well, he's certainly changed now. Maybe she kept her promise." Julia says that someone should tell Barnabas that David has seen her, and Quentin says "Why don't you tell him then?" Julia says that she doesn't want to get involved, and that she'll be "leaving soon for Windcliff anyway. I can let myself get drawn into all of this again." Quentin says "Julia, I know you still care about Barnabas. He'd be very upset if he thought you didn't care at all." Julia says she's sorry, but that can't be helped, and excuses herself from the room. Quentin gets his coat and leaves Collinwood.

At the old house, Barnabas is coming down the stairs to answer the knock at the door. It's Quentin, who Barnabas invites in. Barnabas asks him what he "wanted to see me about" and Quentin bluntly answers "Your sister Sarah." "Sarah!" Barnabas gasps, leaning on the railing. Quentin continues "Yes, Sarah. David claims he saw her in the woods this morning." Barnabas turns to Quentin and frantically says "In the woods? Where? What did she say to him?" Quentin tells Barnabas to calm down as they both move into the living room, but Barnabas goes on. "Sarah, dear Sarah. She's come back, back to me after all these years." Quentin says "She was very important to you, Barnabas?" Barnabas answers "I loved her more than anyone else in my family. She was so innocent and sweet and kind. My father was a cold and distant man. I was much older than Sarah, and I had to be there for her more than even our father was." Quentin nods in understanding. "When I was first freed from my coffin, her spirit returned here, but refused to see me unless I somehow conquered the evil within me. I still remember the night she confronted me and vanished before my eyes.... I thought I would never see her again, and a part of my heart died on that night." Quentin says "Well, David saw her this morning. I suppose she will appear to you sooner or later." Barnabas answers "Will she? How can we be sure? Perhaps her spirit is angered the same as Jeremiah's." Quentin asks "Did she die hating you like Jeremiah?" Barnabas starts to remember, answering "No... not at all...." as we dissolve into a flashback of Sarah upon her deathbed in the old house in 1795. Barnabas enters the room, with dark vampire eyes and a cape covering his clothes, and at first Sarah is scared of him, but Barnabas tells her how he is still her brother and that he still loves her. She weakly says "Hold me, Barnabas." Barnabas smiles and hugs her, telling her how he'll never let anything happen to her. Sarah weakly says "I love you Barnabas" but then dies limp in Barnabas' arms. He lays her down on the bed and begins to cry as we dissolve back to the present where Quentin has been listening to this story. Quentin says "She died still loving you, Barnabas. She must have come back to tell you that." Barnabas answers "I can hope, but I cannot be sure."

Barnabas is sitting, deep in thought, as Angelique enters the room. She asks him if anything is wrong, and Barnabas tells her how David saw Sarah in the woods. Angelique is shocked, and asks Barnabas why she would be here. "I don't know," Barnabas says. Angelique says that they should try to see if Stokes can exorcise both spirits "back to where they belong," but Barnabas says "No, not hers. I know she would never harm me." "Then what could she be doing here?" Angelique asks. "Perhaps she is here to protect us from Jeremiah. I can't think of any other reason," Barnabas replies. There is a knock at the door, and it's Julia. Barnabas is happy to see her, Angelique merely is polite. Barnabas tells her how David saw Sarah, and Julia tells him that she knows since Quentin told her, "but that's not why I'm here." Barnabas asks why, and Julia says that she was "coming over to say her final goodbyes since I'll be leaving very early tomorrow morning." Barnabas pleads "There's nothing I can say to get you to change your mind then?

Episode 1319

Aired: Thursday July 15, 1971

After a replay of Wednesday's close and the titles, Sarah stands before David in the woods. "Hello, David!" she says. "Sarah! It's really you!" says David. "Of course it is! Who else would I be?" she giggles. David asks her where she's been all this time, and she says how she "went away, but now I'm back." David asks her where she went, and she answers "You've gotten so big, David! You're very tall now." David says that he's a lot older since the last time she saw him, and that he's "also grown up a lot." "When will I get to grow up?" Sarah asks, and David gets very sad and simply answers "I don't know." Sarah shrugs, and says "it doesn't matter. I'm still glad to see you." David tells her he's glad to see her too, and asks her why she came back now. "I can't tell you," she answers. "Someone might need me, that's all." David thinks a moment, and says "I think I might need you, Sarah." She asks him what he means, and he says "No one ever believes me when I tell them I see you. But I can prove it to them now!" Sarah asks how, and David takes her picture. "What is that?" Sarah says, a little scared. "Don't be afraid," David says. "I just took your picture." Sarah laughs and says "I don't have a picture! You're very silly! How could you take something I don't have?" David says "No, I didn't mean it that way." He turns away from her, thinking out loud "How can I explain it to you...." but when he turns back, she is gone. He looks around for her and shouts "Sarah! Sarah!"

Roger is reading in the drawing room as Alan enters. As Alan pours himself a drink, Roger comments that Alan "has certainly made himself at home." Alan smiles and tells Roger that the reason he's there is to watch Liz' progress since her operation, not "only enjoy the hospitalities Collinwood has to offer" before taking his drink. Roger insists that Liz is "just fine" and "doesn't need the constant attention of a doctor." Alan counters that "perhaps she prefers my attention." Roger frowns. Alan continues "Actually, I was also recommending running some tests on Carolyn. The condition that caused Liz her problem can sometimes be hereditary." Roger says "Really? Am I at any risk?" Alan says probably not, since "the condition usually affects women much more than men. I can run the same tests for you, if you like." Roger mulls this over, but then David runs in, excited. Roger asks him why he is so out of breath, and David tells Roger that he's seen Sarah again. "Sarah? Who is Sarah?" Roger asks. "Don't you remember?" says David. "She was the ghost I saw when I was younger! The little girl in the old dress! A lot of people saw her too!" Roger angrily says that he doesn't want to hear "any of this nonsense," but David insists he saw her, and then adds "And I have proof! I took her picture! You'll see! You'll see I'm telling the truth!" David runs out of the room, and Roger glares at Alan, who wonders why.

Alan asks Roger why he is so angry, and Roger tells Alan how "David had finally outgrown his childish imagination until you had to insist on discussing ghosts and goblins with him. Now look what's happened! A boy of his age, still talking to an imaginary friend!" Alan asks "How do you know she's imaginary? He says he snapped her picture." Roger looks at Alan and says "I must be blunt with you, Slater. I don't like the effect you're having on my son." Alan says "Oh?" as Liz and Carolyn enter the room, which immediately stops the arguing. Liz says hello to Alan, and he asks her how she's been feeling. She says fine, but then Roger snaps "Well Liz, what I was worried about has happened." Liz asks Roger what he's talking about, and Roger answers "David just came in here insisting that he saw his imaginary friend again, that little girl, Sarah!" Liz answers "Sarah?" "Yes," says Roger. "I knew that Alan would have a bad effect on him from the moment he arrived." "Roger, please," Liz says. Carolyn remarks how she remembers how David used to insist on seeing Sarah, and Liz answers "Yes, and he wasn't the only one who claimed to see her." Roger scoffs that it's all "nonsense" as Carolyn hears a knock at the front door and goes off to answer it. Alan asks Liz about Sarah, and Liz tells him she'll explain it later when Carolyn returns. "Who was it?" asks Liz. "It's a telegram for you, mother," she says. "It's from New York." She hands it to Liz, who starts to read it. "Who is it from?" Carolyn asks. Liz, reading, answers "It's from a Harrison Collins, of the New York branch of the family." Roger wonders "Harrison Collins? I've never heard the name." Liz looks at Roger and says "Well, you'll get to ask him whatever you want. He'll be arriving in Collinsport in just a few days for a visit."

Roger is intrigued by his "formerly unknown New York cousin," and wonders what he'll be like. Carolyn is deep in thought, and Liz asks her why. "I remember before you got sick," she says. "You said a relative was going to arrive. I can't remember what else you said." Liz answers that she doesn't see how that could be true, since she had "never heard of Harrison Collins before opening this telegram." Carolyn insists that she remembers her mother saying something about it, and then asks "Uncle Roger, please don't accuse me of having David's imagination!" Roger smiles and says "I would never do that, kitten. Liz, did the telegram say why he is visiting?" Liz answers that it only said he wanted to meet "this branch of the family before traveling on to Europe." Roger, impressed, says "Perhaps he is a world traveler, a cosmopolitan citizen of the world." Carolyn says "I wonder what he does do. Or what he's like." Liz says "Yes, it is a little strange suddenly meeting a previously unknown relative, but then again, Barnabas and Quentin have certainly paved the way." Alan adds "I guess you won't know for sure until you meet him." They all think about this for a moment.

Episode 1318

Aired: Wednesday July 14, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's close and the titles, Jeremiah's ghost is still reaching out to strangle Angelique, and his hands are about to touch her when we suddenly see Barnabas' hands on Angelique's shoulders, shaking her out of her vision and asking her what is wrong. She looks around to get hear bearings, then clings to Barnabas with "Oh, it was horrible! I was covered in....blood!" Barnabas looks up and around, shouting "Jeremiah! You will not destroy our love! I will find a way to put you to rest!" Angelique holds him tight and says she hopes he can, but Barnabas says "I only hope he doesn't take his anger out on anyone else in the family." Angelique looks at Barnabas scared, as we cut to Carolyn asleep at Collinwood. There is a bright flash of light outside of her door and a loud CRASH which wakes her. She gets up, wondering what the noise was. She walks to the bedroom door and slowly opens it.

Carolyn looks in the hallway and sees nothing. She calls "David?" wondering if it's him, but then David comes out of his room as well. She asks him if he heard anything, and he says "Only you." "Didn't you hear a crash or something?" she asks and David says if there was, he must have slept through it. Carolyn shrugs and goes back to bed. Curious, David walks down the hallway. David starts to come down the stairs in the foyer, and then sees the front door has been left open, with the wind blowing. He shuts it as Mrs. Johnson comes out from the kitchen door. She asks him what "the devil" he's doing up so late, and he says that Carolyn heard a noise, so he came downstairs and found the front door open. "It must have been swinging in the wind and slamming against the wall," he says. Mrs. Johnson tells him that he better get back to bed "rather than wander around Collinwood all hours of the night." David goes upstairs as we pan to the closed doors.

The next morning, Mrs. Johnson is in the hallway near David's door. She knocks on it and tells him to come downstairs for his breakfast. From inside, he yells "in a minute" and she walks back down the hallway. As she turns the corner, she sees a linen closet door open, and towels and sheets strewn all over the floor. "Mercy!" she says as she walks over and starts to pick the stuff up. David comes by, and Mrs. Johnson asks him what happened. He says he doesn't know what she means, and she says "Well, someone certainly made a pig sty out of this closet! Look at this! All the towels and sheets have been thrown around every which way!" David says he has no idea what happened. Mrs. Johnson sees a sheet on the floor and angrily says "Oh no! Look at that!" We see a footprint on the white sheet with a pointy toe. "That kind of mark will take forever to get out! David Collins, you'll be the death of me!" says Mrs. Johnson (a dangerous thing to say on this show). David gets defensive and says he had nothing to do with the mess in the closet, and that "I don't have a shoe like that. I've never even seen a shoeprint like that before." Mrs. Johnson angrily tells him to get downstairs and eat his breakfast already as she cleans up.

David finds Quentin and Daphne downstairs, and asks them if they think Angelique had really seen a ghost at the wedding. Quentin asks him why he thinks she did, and David answers "I don't know. It just seemed strange that she and Professor Stokes got nervous like they did when my father joked about it. What was Professor Stokes holding up? It looked like some kind of weird jewelry or something. I should look it up in one of Carolyn's books on the occult." Daphne tells David she thinks his imagination is getting the better of him. David insists that ghosts are real and that he's seen them. Quentin gets a bit uncomfortable, then looks at Daphne and gets more uncomfortable, and tries to change the subject by asking if David has taken the photographs in the woods that he was supposed to for Daphne's lessons on birds. David says no, and Quentin tells him that he should take his camera and take pictures of "at least a half a dozen different kinds of birds before you come back. If you do, I'll take you into the village for lunch. Deal?" David smiles and says yes, and runs to get his camera. Daphne tells Quentin that he's "good with children" and Quentin answers "Only for purely selfish reasons" before kissing her. We cut to David wandering in the woods with his camera. He takes a picture pointing the camera up a tree, but then hears someone's footsteps in the leaves behind him. When he turns, he hears a familiar "Hello." His jaw drops as he sees the little girl in her Colonial dress standing before him. "Sarah!" he says.

Episode 1317

Aired: Tuesday July 13, 1971

Thayer David's voice over: "It is a night filled with shadows at the old house on the Collins estate. The shadows of the past have reached into the present to cast darkness on Barnabas Collins and his bride as they have renewed their vows, first made almost two hundred years ago. As they have both lived on through the centuries, so it seems has their past...."

Barnabas tells Stokes that he knows who the spirit was and why he was here, and Stokes answers that he's eager to hear the details. "I'm not sure I can relate them without dredging up uncomfortable memories. The spirit you saw was my Uncle Jeremiah. He was once my friend." Stokes says "The Collins family history said Jeremiah Collins died of a sudden illness. I'll assume that isn't true." Barnabas grimly answers "No, Professor, it is not. It would have been far too embarrassing for my father to allow the truth into the history. You see, I killed Jeremiah." Stokes raises an eyebrow.

After the titles, Barnabas tells Stokes how he shot Jeremiah in a duel, and Angelique interrupts "Barnabas, no. I killed him as much as you did. I was the one who put the spell on him that made him love Josette." Barnabas answers "You did not put a spell on me to put me into a jealous rage. No, Angelique. I am to blame here." Stokes says "Yet he haunts you both. Why?" Angelique gets a little nervous, but answers "He first haunted Barnabas after he died. When he also appeared to me, I tried to use my powers to return him to his grave, but I could not. His spirit nearly buried me alive the first time I married Barnabas." Barnabas is surprised to hear this, and tells her he never knew that. Angelique smiles at Stokes and tells him another half-truth by saying that "Luckily, your ancestor was able to rescue me in time." Stokes remarks how more of the family history is beginning to make sense to him now. Barnabas remembers how Jeremiah's ghost vanished shortly after he and Angelique had married, and Angelique finishes the thought by adding "He only appeared when Barnabas and I were happy together." Stokes thinks that Jeremiah might only be concerned with "preventing their happiness," which Barnabas agrees with, saying that's why he fears for himself and Angelique, but Angelique thinks to herself "Unless Jeremiah is under the control of some other power, as he was after I first raised him...." Barnabas asks Angelique if she agrees, and she simply says "Yes" and that she's worried. Stokes hands Barnabas the medallion and says that perhaps it will help.

At Collinwood, Roger is having a nightcap in the drawing room and looks angry as Liz enters. She asks him why he's still up "after such a lovely wedding," and he grumbles. Liz says she's sorry if Alan upset him, but he's still getting to know everyone. "Too well," says Roger. Liz asks him what he means, and Roger says "I don't appreciate him telling stories about my childhood so as to embarrass me in front of my only son." Liz tells Roger that David was very happy to hear that Roger was "like him as a boy" and that "it only made him prouder to be your son." Roger scoffs at this, and says that he thinks that Alan "will be a bad influence on the boy. David had finally seemed to outgrow his ridiculous childhood imagination, and in one night, Alan has brought it all back." Liz tells Roger not to worry, but Roger answers that "As long as you're going to insist on Alan staying here, I will do whatever is necessary to make sure my son stays the course he has been on." As Roger bids goodnight and leaves the room, Liz wonders what he meant.

Stokes says goodnight to Barnabas & Angelique, and Willie asks them if they will need anything more from him. Barnabas says no, Willie leaves, and Angelique puts her arms around Barnabas and happily says "We're finally alone." Barnabas smiles and tells her "This time, we will have the life of happiness we should have." He leads her by the hand upstairs. They enter the master bedroom, and Angelique says "Isn't a groom supposed to carry his new bride over the threshold?" Barnabas says "Yes, I believe that it the custom," as he picks her up and carries her to the bed. He sets her down gently, and she smiles at him as she lets her hand glide over the blanket. But the smile soon turns to a look of terror as she looks at her hand and sees that it is covered with blood. She screams, and sees that she is laying in a bed covered with blood as she hears Jeremiah's laughter. Suddenly, she sees Jeremiah standing over her, his hands reaching out towards her throat. She tries to pull away, but cannot as his hands get closer and closer.....

Episode 1316

Aired: Monday July 12, 1971

In a repeat of Friday's close, Angelique stands next to Barnabas and lifts her veil as the minister begins the ceremony. As he goes from "Dearly beloved...." to "Do you Barnabas...." we see various reaction shots of everyone in the room: Alan, Liz, Roger, David, Quentin, Stokes, Carolyn, Daphne, Willie, Barnabas, Angelique & Julia. Barnabas says "I do" to the big question, as does Angelique as Quentin hands Barnabas the ring and he places it on Angelique's finger. The minister finishes with "By the power invested in me by the state of Maine, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride." There is some small applause from the group as Barnabas starts to kiss Angelique, but at the moment their lips touch, there is a loud clap of thunder and a wind rushes through the room blowing all the candles out. The room is shrouded in darkness with only some pale moonlight. Everyone looks around wondering what is happening as the curtains in the room start waving without the windows being open. The chandelier begins to swing. Roger asks "What is going on?" There is another clap of thunder and a flash of lightning as everyone looks around startled, and with the whistling of the wind, Liz suddenly faints into Alan's arms. He shouts over the wind "Liz! Liz! Are you all right?" Roger tries to move towards Liz, but the wind is blowing stronger as the front doors of the house suddenly swing open. Everyone backs away from its force, and suddenly loud footsteps are heard approaching. Carolyn looks and screams, Daphne hides behind Quentin, Julia and Stokes are scared and curious, David is frozen with fear, Willie is panicky, the minister is aghast, and Alan can't believe what is happening as a dark silhouetted figure walks into the room through the open door. Angelique clings to Barnabas, as Barnabas looks at the figure and says in the howling wind, terrified, "No! It cannot be!" The figure stands in the shadows and raises an accusatory finger at Angelique and Barnabas - and with the next flash of lightning, we see him clearly as the bloody bandaged ghost of Jeremiah Collins.

After the titles, Jeremiah stands in flashes on lightning pointing a bony finger at the newly married couple as ghostly wind roars through the room. "Get back! GET BACK!" Barnabas yells as Jeremiah slowly approaches. Stokes takes a small medallion out of his pocket and we see him try to shine it in Jeremiah's direction. Angelique takes Stokes' arm for protection as Stokes says "Spirit! Begone! Begone from this place!" Stokes places Barnabas' hand on the medallion as well and repeats "Spirit, begone!" and suddenly, Jeremiah vanishes, the candles are re-lit, the room is bright and calm just as it was before Jeremiah arrived. Angelique, Stokes & Barnabas are standing together, but everyone else is in the exact positions they were before all the trouble started - even Liz is awake and on Alan's arm! Roger looks at Barnabas and says "What are you three doing? Barnabas! A moment ago you were kissing the bride and I was about to toast you!" Angelique, still shaken, asks "Didn't you see it?" "See what?" Roger asks. Barnabas and Stokes look at each other confused as Roger continues with a chuckle "What on Earth is the matter? You look like you've all seen a ghost!"

Barnabas quickly says that the "weight of the moment suddenly fell upon" he and his new bride, and lets Roger toast them. Stokes fumbles his medallion, and says in a low tone to Barnabas and Angelique how "the talisman must have preserved our memories as it vanquished that spirit. We were all touching it." "All the better," says Barnabas. David chimes in with "Did you really see a ghost, Angelique?" Angelique laughs a little and says she's not sure. David starts to tell her about different ghosts he's seen at Collinwood over the years and how the entire estate is haunted, but Roger tells him to "stop talking nonsense." Alan laughs a little and says "How you've changed, Roger!" Alan turns to David and says "When I used to work at Collinwood, your father was a little younger than you are now, David. He used to love to try to scare me by telling me how all the dark corners of the estate were haunted by the ghosts of the past." David looks at his father with a big smile and asks "Father, did you really do that?" Roger gets embarrassed and says "I'd rather not discuss that right now. Excuse me," before walking away. Liz tells Alan how Roger no longer likes to talk about "such things" but is encouraged when David proudly says "I guess I'm a lot like my father after all!" Stokes calls Julia over and tells her that they had all seen "an apparition of some sort." Julia says she saw nothing. Barnabas tells her that what they saw "was real, very real. I even know who it was." Stokes is intrigued, but Julia coldly says "Even so, it's really no concern of mine." Barnabas is stunned at her attitude.

Barnabas tries to question Julia why she isn't interested, but is interrupted by some congratulations from Carolyn and Quentin. As Barnabas is occupied, Stokes asks Julia why she isn't as intrigued by "yet another strange phenomena at Collinwood." Julia tells Stokes that while strange phenomena still interest her, she has "grown tired of Collinwood and the hauntings of the family." Stokes can't believe this, and reminds her how close she is to the family. Julia agrees, but while watching Barnabas and Angelique take their congratulations from the others in the room, tells Stokes that her "heart just isn't as passionate for any more mysteries around here anymore." Stokes sees what she is looking at and nods silently, understanding.

As the guests leave and say their goodbyes, Barnabas tries one more time to get Julia to wait behind along with Stokes to discuss what they had seen. Alan, Liz, Roger and David say their goodbyes, with David telling Angelique that if she sees "any more ghosts, be sure to let me know!" Quentin, Daphne and Carolyn are next to leave, and when Carolyn asks if Julia is coming, Barnabas starts to say no, but Julia says "Yes, I'll be there in a moment." Barnabas and Julia look at each other sadly and Julia leaves with the group. Angelique looks satisfied at this, and as Willy closes the door behind them all, Barnabas says how much he regrets the loss of Julia's help, since she was "so invaluable in the past." Angelique says "Well, Professor Stokes was much more helpful this time, Barnabas. What was that you took from your pocket?" Stokes says "A small talisman I carry around for good luck. I hadn't really believed in its power until tonight." Willy asks them what they are talking about, and Barnabas says "We all saw a ghost, Willy." Willy says "Yeah? Tonight? Here? W..w..ww..wwwwhat are you talkin' about?" Stokes says "Yes, I too would like an explanation, if you have one, Barnabas." Barnabas looks somber for a moment, and says "I know who that angry spirit was. And I know why he was here." Then, he looks at Angelique and says "And I fear for us, Angelique." She looks concerned.

Episode 1315

Aired: Friday July 9, 1971

David Selby's voiceover: "A happy occasion has come to Collinwood, for on this night, a wedding will take place at the old house. It is the same wedding that took place so long ago in the past, only this time, for Barnabas Collins and his bride Angelique, the wedding it truly based on love. But they will soon discover that the shadows of the past can reach out into the present and beyond...."

Angelique is looking in the mirror, holding up the dress to see how she looks in it as Daphne enters. She says that Stokes has "already arrived downstairs and has started on the sherry" and adds that "everyone from Collinwood should be here within the hour." Daphne hands Angelique a small blue lace scarf and tells her she now has "something blue" and will only need "something borrowed." There is a knock at the door, and its Quentin. He's dressed up formally. Daphne asks him if it's bad luck for the best man to see the bride before her wedding, and he tells her that it's actually good luck if he sees "one of her beautiful bridesmaids" before kissing her. She laughs, but suddenly feels a bit faint. Quentin nearly goes into a panic, until she recovers and says that "it must be because I was out of breath from running upstairs." Quentin tells her she'll be all right, and she says "Hopefully all right enough to catch the bouquet." Quentin smiles, but still looks concerned.

After the titles, Barnabas is straightening his clothes in a large mirror held by Willie. He is dressed in his 1795 suit, medal and all, as in his portrait. Willie tells him he looks fine, and Barnabas thanks him and tells him to take the mirror away. Barnabas hears a knock at the front door and heads downstairs to answer it. It is Carolyn, who is dressed identical to Daphne. She looks Barnabas over and tells him he looks "very handsome in those antique clothes." He thanks her, and she says she has something borrowed for Angelique and heads upstairs. Barnabas goes into the living room where Stokes and Quentin are having a drink. Stokes congratulates Barnabas, and then asks him if he doesn't think he's "taking a chance dressing like that." Barnabas smiles and says he's done it before for a party, and no one will think anything of it. "Besides, " he adds "Angelique prefers this style of clothing on me." Quentin hands Barnabas a drink saying "You're not even married yet and you're already taking orders from your wife. I'm worried about you Barnabas!" There is another knock at the door, and this time it's Roger and David. Roger sees Barnabas and chuckles "Barnabas, only you would want to dress as your ancestor for your own wedding! I salute you!" before pouring himself a drink. David looks Barnabas over curiously before Quentin tells David he looks "very smart" in his suit. David thanks him, and then congratulates Barnabas, adding "I can't get over it... you look just like the portrait!" Barnabas looks at Stokes, then back to David saying "Well, I guess I always have, except for my suit." Barnabas asks Roger where Julia is, and Roger says he doesn't know. "Really?" Barnabas says. "I thought she would come with you." Roger shrugs and says that perhaps she'll arrive with Elizabeth and Dr. Slater in a little while. Barnabas says "Yes, I'm sure she will," but looks concerned.

Angelique is in her wedding gown as Carolyn and Daphne help her get ready. They remark how beautiful she is, and Carolyn adds that "at last we can have a happy occasion to celebrate around here." Daphne asks Carolyn where Julia is, and Carolyn gives her a "you shouldn't have brought that up" look until Angelique jumps in and says "I didn't think it would be right to ask Julia to be one of my bridesmaids. I know how close she is to Barnabas and how it might hurt her. It would have been very awkward." Daphne nods and says she understands. Downstairs, there is another knock at the door and it's Elizabeth and Alan. Willie shows them in, and Barnabas greets them both, thanking Elizabeth for coming. She thanks him for waiting for her to return home before having the wedding. Alan looks around the room and tells Barnabas how impressed he is with the job he's done restoring the old house. "I remember when I last saw this place, and it was in horrible condition. I always thought they would knock it down." Barnabas is appalled at this thought and says "Oh, no, no no! How could anyone destroy such beauty?" Alan tells him that it's certainly beautiful now, and then asks Barnabas if he "always dresses for the period as well." Barnabas tells him that "my ancestor's clothes get me more into the spirit of the past, but I'll only wear them on special occasions like this." Everyone has a chuckle, but Roger is annoyed enough at seeing Alan that he makes an excuse to go upstairs and "see if the bride I'll be giving away is ready." Barnabas asks Elizabeth if Julia was coming with them, and she says "No, I don't know where she is." Barnabas looks sad, and Elizabeth adds "Don't worry Barnabas, I'm sure she'll be here."

Quentin wanders over to Stokes and tells him that Daphne had nearly fainted a little while earlier. Stokes wonders if this may "mean anything." Quentin says he hopes it was nothing, though he is thinking "more and more of following up on your theory, Professor." Stokes says he only hopes he is wrong. Alan asks Liz how she's feeling, and Liz says she's fine, only a little light-headed from the small amount of wine she's had. Alan tells her to "stick to moderation" until her body gets stronger. Barnabas is looking out the window, and Willie tells him that he shouldn't worry, Julia will be here soon. Barnabas wonders if anything has happened to her, and there is a knock at the door. Barnabas rushes to answer it, thinking it's Julia, but it's the minister. Barnabas lets him in and introduces him to everyone, and the minister asks when the wedding will begin. Barnabas tells him that "We still need to wait for one more guest. One very important guest."

Some time has passed, and still no Julia. Quentin tells Barnabas that they really should begin, and Barnabas reluctantly agrees. He tells David to go upstairs and tell Roger to lead everyone down. At that moment, there is another knock at the door, and this time it is Julia. Barnabas gives her a hug hello, and then asks her where she's been. She says "I was at Collinwood, I guess I was taking a last look around and I lost track of the time...." Knowing she is fibbing, Barnabas looks at her and simply says "Julia, I'm so happy you've come." She forces a smile and says that she "wouldn't want to miss your wedding Barnabas, and your chance for happiness." He thanks her and leads her into the room. Quentin comes downstairs, stands next to Barnabas before the minister and tells him to begin. As Barnabas watches, Carolyn and Daphne come downstairs first, followed by Roger leading Angelique. Angelique stands next to Barnabas and lifts her veil as the minister begins the ceremony. As he goes from "Dearly beloved...." to "Do you Barnabas...." we see various reaction shots of everyone in the room: Alan, Liz, Roger, David, Quentin, Stokes, Carolyn, Daphne, Willie, Barnabas, Angelique & Julia. Episode 1314

Aired: Thursday July 8, 1971

After a replay of Wednesday's close and the titles, Mrs. Johnson is tidying up the foyer of Collinwood when the doors fly open and Roger enters carrying suitcases. Following him is Elizabeth, walking slowly but deliberately. Mrs. Johnson greets her with a big smile, and tells her how glad she is to see her up and around. Liz thanks her as Roger calls for Carolyn and David. He leads Liz into the drawing room as Carolyn and David come downstairs and both give Liz a hug. Liz starts to look over some papers on the desk, and Roger leads her away, telling her to "take it easy." Liz tells him that she feels fine, and that there's "business to be attended to. Which of the guest rooms did you fix up for Alan?" she asks Roger, who stands there stumped. Carolyn tells Liz that none of the guest rooms have been touched. Liz scowls at Roger and calls for Mrs. Johnson, and tells her to "get a room ready for Dr. Slater, who will stay here a while." Mrs. Johnson asks if anything is wrong, and Liz says no, just get the room ready. After Mrs. Johnson leaves, Liz looks at Roger scoldingly.

There is a knock at the door and David answers it, letting Alan in. He says hello, and David asks him if he wants someone to fetch his bags from his car, and then gets excited when he sees the car. "You drive that car? A convertible sports car?" asks David. Alan says yes, and David says "Wow! I didn't think someone your age would drive a car like that!" and then thinks a moment and adds "I'm sorry, I don't think I said that right." Alan smiles and says it's okay, and asks David if he likes cars. David answers yes, and that he can't wait a couple more years to drive one. Alan says that "the best I can do for you right now then would be to let you ride in that one sometime. Okay?" David tells him yes as Roger comes downstairs. Roger sends David back upstairs to Daphne and his homework as Alan starts to take in the foyer. "This place hasn't changed a bit!" Alan says as he looks around. "The grandeur of Collinwood! The impressive architecture, the portraits of esteemed ancestors....." as he suddenly turns to see the portrait of Barnabas. "My word! Even your English cousin has his portrait hanging here!" Roger shakes his head and says "No, that's his English ancestor. A stunning resemblance, really, I've never gotten over it. But then again, Collins blood runs strong." Alan pats Roger on the back and quips "I know, I kept a lot of it pumping lately" as he walks into the drawing room. He looks around the drawing room and remarks "This house is just as magnificent as I remember it from all those years ago." Quentin, who has been sitting in there reading, says hello. Alan introduces himself, and Quentin remarks "Oh, you're Dr. Slater. Well, we all owe you a huge debt of thanks for what you've done for Elizabeth. I'm Quentin Collins." Alan says no thanks are necessary, and that he'd "do anything for Elizabeth. Speaking of which, where is she?" Roger says that she's up in her room resting. Alan says he'd better go check on her, and then tells Roger "Roger, could you get my bags out of my car? Thanks!" Alan leaves the room and heads upstairs, and Quentin, seeing Roger's annoyance, smirks "If it bothers you that much Roger, I can always get his bags." Roger doesn't find Quentin amusing.

At the old house, Willy enters the living room carrying an old trunk. Barnabas enters and thanks him for bringing it up from the basement. As Barnabas opens it and begins to blow some dust away, Willie asks him what "he wants to look through more old stuff for anyway." Barnabas tells him that there's something "very valuable in here, Willie." Willie gets a little excited and asks "Yeah? Like jewels?" Barnabas answers "Don't be so crass, Willie. Some things can be more valuable to the heart than gold...." as he continues looking through the trunk. Willie wonders what he means, until Barnabas removes an old white wedding dress from deep inside the trunk. "Ah! I thought it was in here," Barnabas says. Willie looks at it and says "That's a pretty old dress, Barnabas. Who's was it?" Barnabas answers "Who do you think?" Willie thinks a moment and then says "Angelique? Really? That was her dress when she married ya the first time?" Barnabas answers "Yes. I think she'd like to wear it again. Where is she?" Willie remarks "I think she's upstairs." Barnabas asks "Oh?" and Willie adds "Yeah, I think she's in Josette's room." Barnabas, shocked, looks at Willie and says "Josette's room?" and starts to run upstairs as Willie gets confused and asks "Yeah, whattsamatta?" Barnabas gets upstairs and enters Josette's room, where Angelique has been looking up at Josette's portrait. When Barnabas enters, she turns and looks at him coldly.

Barnabas asks Angelique to come downstairs, but Angelique remarks "You've done a wonderful job restoring this room, Barnabas." As she starts to fondle the various perfume bottles on Josette's dresser, she adds "You've made it a real shrine to her, haven't you? To the woman you loved." Angelique begins to cry a bit, and Barnabas takes her in his arms. He looks at her and says "I may have loved her once, but that was long ago. We are here now, and I love only you." She hugs him and she says that she "must know that is true" and Barnabas says it is. Angelique says that the room is very pretty and feminine, and "perhaps if we moved her portrait, I wouldn't feel so out of place here." Barnabas says "No. I don't want you to walk in her footsteps or have her things. You should have your own. And we will have our things, our rooms, our life together." He shows her the wedding dress and tells her "I had Willie bring this up from the basement. I thought it would make you happy." Angelique tells him that it does, and Barnabas tells her that he will have it "cleaned and ready for the wedding ceremony tomorrow." She gives him a hug, and he tells her that "Once we leave this room, I will have Willie lock it up. No one will come back in here ever again." Angelique suddenly gets sentimental and says "But you've done such wonders with it, Barnabas..." but he cuts her off with "We both have to let go of the past if we are to have a future, Angelique." She kisses him, and as they leave, they blow the candles out and leave the room in darkness. As we pan over the room in the moonlight, we see that the curtains begin to dance wildly as if in the wind, only the windows are still closed.

Episode 1313

Aired: Wednesday July 7, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's close and the titles, Quentin tells Stokes that his theory must be false since Daphne has not faded away. Stokes insists that they locate the grave of Daphne Harridge Collins and have it exhumed. Barnabas points out to Stokes that the grave may be in New York somewhere, since as far as they know, that Quentin & Daphne never returned to Collinsport after 1840. Stokes agrees that he will "definitely have to do more research on the New York branch of the Collins family after 1840" before pursuing this, though Quentin snaps that "If your theory is true, Daphne would vanish before you opened your first book. There must be another way she connects to Petofi." Stokes says he's found nothing, and Quentin insists that there must be another answer, since he can't bring himself to tell Daphne she may "just disappear into nothingness one day."

At Collinwood, Quentin and Barnabas enter and find Julia reading in the drawing room. Quentin asks Julia if she could help Stokes in determining Daphne's past since "his current hypothesis is unacceptable." Julia asks for an explanation, and Barnabas gives her a quick run-down of how Stokes thinks Petofi brought Daphne to life. Julia remarks that before they had changed history, the original Daphne Harridge had been brought back to life by Gerard's ghost and "perhaps Petofi knew of this manner of witchcraft as well." Quentin is intrigued by this, and pours himself a drink while answering "This idea sounds better than one that has her vanishing into thin air one day." Barnabas asks Julia if there would be any way of preventing that if it were true, and Julia answers that she "has no idea" only "there's no chance of trying another Adam-like experiment." Barnabas agrees and says that "that would be impossible." Quentin asks them what they are talking about, and Barnabas answers that Julia will explain it all, and that he "must meet Angelique at the hospital so that they can inform Elizabeth of the wedding plans." Barnabas leaves, and Quentin looks at Julia's mixed reaction.

Angelique is sitting with Liz in her room as Barnabas enters with some flowers. Liz thanks him, and tells him that she has been getting better acquainted with Angelique. "She's a wonderful girl, Barnabas" says Liz. "She knows so much about the family. You must have told her nearly everything about us." Barnabas smiles and answers "Well, perhaps nearly everything." Liz thanks them for waiting to have the ceremony until the end of the week since "it will give me a chance to return home and settle in for a day before such a wonderful celebration." Barnabas tells her that the Collins family could never celebrate anything without her. Alan enters the room, and seeing that Liz is with people, tells her he'll be back later, but she invites him in to introduce him to Barnabas, who says hello, as well as Angelique. "Barnabas is my cousin from England who has made his home here," she adds. Barnabas tells Alan "I understand you performed the operation that saved Elizabeth's life, doctor. We are all very grateful for your expertise." Alan smiles and answers "I'm pretty grateful to have Liz around as well." Liz tells Alan that Barnabas and Angelique are planning on getting married, and he congratulates them. Liz asks Barnabas if she can invite Alan to the wedding, adding "I know you insisted on close friends and family, but Alan is a close friend of mine from long ago." Angelique tells Liz she needn't "make excuses" and "can invite whomever she wants." Barnabas adds that they would be "delighted to have him" and Alan remarks that "he'll certainly feel at home at Collinwood." Barnabas is confused by this remark, and seeing this, Liz explains that "Alan will be staying at Collinwood for a while, to oversee my recovery." Barnabas looks him over with an "Oh?"

Outside Liz's room, Angelique and Barnabas leave Liz with Alan and move down the hallway. Barnabas is deep in thought, and Angelique asks him what's on his mind. "I hope you don't mind my inviting Dr. Slater to our wedding. Your cousin Elizabeth seems genuinely fond of him." "I have no doubt of that," Barnabas answers. "I just wonder if that fondness runs any deeper than perhaps her gratitude towards a doctor who saved her life." Angelique turns away from him with "Is that a gratitude you can understand, Barnabas?" Barnabas says "I didn't mean it that way. I'm only looking out for Elizabeth." Angelique tells Barnabas how much she likes Elizabeth, and "I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I prefer your family now to the one I met long ago, except for your mother." Barnabas laughs a little and tells Angelique that he felt the exact same way "when I found myself in this time. I'm sure Dr. Slater is a good man." Angelique says she thinks so too.

Episode 1312

Aired: Tuesday July 6, 1971

Liz is walking around her hospital room slowly and taking deep breaths as Roger enters. He asks her what she's doing out of bed, and she says he shouldn't worry about her. "I'm feeling much stronger, and the nurses suggested that I move around to aid my recovery," she adds. Roger says that he's "amazed at her rapid progress. I was so worried about you, I was." She smiles and puts her hand on his cheek saying "I'm going to be perfectly fine. I've been placed into the best hands possible."

After the titles, Angelique and Stokes are having a pleasant conversation at the old house about what Angelique thinks of the 20th century. Stokes asks her if she "shares Barnabas' stubborn attachment to the past, living in a house with no electricity or telephones." Angelique smiles and says that while she also finds the past "comfortable and romantic" she also plans to "enjoy all that these modern times have to offer. I especially like that women seem, well, stronger. Barnabas' cousin Elizabeth is in charge of the family business, Julia Hoffman is a doctor. There seems to be no end." Stokes agrees as Quentin enters, followed by Carolyn and Barnabas. Carolyn congratulates Angelique, as does Quentin with a peck on the cheek. Quentin tells Stokes he came to talk to him, and Angelique tells Carolyn that "We should go upstairs and get better acquainted as the men discuss their business." Carolyn laughs a bit and comments "You have such an old fashioned way about you, Angelique. No wonder you're so well suited to Barnabas." They go upstairs, and Stokes tells Quentin "You've come to ask me what I've discovered about our miss Hopkins. I was planning on telling you at Collinwood later, but here you are. You'd better sit down, Quentin. You may not like what you hear." Quentin doesn't like hearing that either.

At the hospital, Roger confronts Liz about Alan moving into Collinwood. Liz says that it makes "perfect sense" since "who else would know better about how to oversee my recovery?" Roger suggests Julia Hoffman, and Liz agrees that Julia is a fine doctor, but Alan is the "top man in this field, even if he wasn't a close friend as well." Roger reminds Liz that she hasn't seen this "close friend" in years, and Liz answers that they "seem to have picked up right where we left off." Roger says "Liz, we're all older now," but Liz snaps back "But not too old. I will live my life however I please, and I need not answer to anyone." Roger tells her "I'm only worried about you. I know how vulnerable you can be when you're trying to be strong. I don't want to see you hurt again like with Paul, or taken advantage of the way Jason McGuire did. I know you think of Alan Slater as more than just your doctor." Liz smiles at Roger and thanks him for his concern, and adds that "Alan is different, Roger. He's a good man. I trust him. Soon, in time, I know you will too." Roger looks skeptical.

Stokes tells Quentin and Barnabas that he has done some research into the "kinds of sorcery" practiced by Petofi that "has been recorded. Granted, not all of his activities are known, which leaves large gaps in anyone's true understanding of his enormous powers." Quentin asks him what he's found out about Daphne, and Stokes answers that "I only have a theory, but the more I think about it, the more I am convinced I do not have the complete answer. I believe that Daphne Hopkins and the Daphne Harridge of the 19th century who speaks through her may well be one in the same." Barnabas asks how that is possible, and Stokes answers that "It is not reincarnation, as far as I can tell. There is absolutely no record of Daphne Harridge existing for more than only a few months ago. I believe that Petofi was able to raise the spirit of someone long dead and re-embody them for his own purposes." Quentin snaps that he had already been under that impression, but Stokes answers "Yes. And you were afraid to tell Miss Hopkins of this theory in fear of terrifying her. But some of the material I researched seemed to imply that if this was indeed true, if she was a re-embodied spirit under Petofi's control, she would have no anchor in this reality without Petofi's power present." Quentin starts to think about this, and Stokes continues "In other words, with Petofi destroyed, she should have simply faded away."

Quentin insists that this is "ridiculous" since Daphne still very much exists. Barnabas wonders if that means they haven't truly destroyed Petofi. Quentin scoffs at this, and answers that "If that were true, he would have come back here already, seeking revenge." Barnabas asks Stokes how long it would take Daphne to "fade away" once Petofi was gone, and Stokes answers "It should have happened almost immediately. From everything I read, if my theory as to her origins are correct, there's no logical reason for her being here now." Quentin snaps that "there must be, since she's still here, Professor." Stokes says he's at a loss to explain how, and Quentin suggests that maybe the theory about Daphne's origins is false. Stokes says there's only one way he knows of to test the theory, and when Quentin asks what, Stokes grimly replies "We will need to exhume the grave of the 19th century Daphne Harridge Collins and see if there is a body inside it." Quentin and Barnabas look at each other.

Episode 1311

Aired: Monday July 5, 1971

Nancy Barrett's voiceover: "It is a clear and calm night at the great house of Collinwood. Though the Collins family have known great tragedy throughout their history, this is a time for happiness. Barnabas Collins has found love with one who was once his mortal enemy, and plans to marry. Love can sometimes conquer the forces of evil, but evil often has a resilience all its own, as those in the great house are soon to discover...."

There is a knock at the front door of Collinwood that Roger answers. It's Barnabas, who asks to come in. Barnabas asks how Liz is, and Roger says that she came through the operation fine and will be home in just a few days. Roger remarks that they haven't seen much of Barnabas since "his new lady friend arrived." Barnabas replies that "it's funny you should mention that, Roger. I have come here tonight to tell you that Angelique and I have made plans to be married." Roger raises an eyebrow.

After the titles, Roger and Barnabas are having brandy in the drawing room. Roger congratulates Barnabas, but then asks him how he can "rush into marriage when you hardly know this woman." Barnabas replies that while she hasn't spent much time in Collinsport, he has "known her for many years. " Roger snickers and replies "Knowing women, I'm sure she would say that it was inevitable." Barnabas takes a drink and only says "Quite." Roger then asks Barnabas if he's sure of what he's doing, that marriage is a very serious thing and that he shouldn't rush into it, but before Barnabas can answer, Roger stops himself with a laugh and says "Hmph! I am one to talk, with my history." Barnabas tells Roger not to be so hard on himself, but Roger replies "No, I have no business telling you not to rush into anything. When I think back to my whirlwind courtship with Cassandra, I....." Suddenly a light goes off in Roger's head, and he turns to Barnabas and says "That's it! I've been trying to put my finger on that for days now!" Barnabas asks what, and Roger answers "Cassandra! That's who Angelique reminds me of!" Barnabas doesn't react well.

Roger goes on about how much Angelique looks like Cassandra "especially her eyes," but Barnabas answers that Angelique "doesn't even have any relatives living in America." Roger thinks it's an "odd coincidence" and Barnabas answers that "perhaps everyone has a double of sorts." Roger pours himself another drink and remarks "Yes, perhaps. I suppose you could say yours is on that portrait in the foyer!" Barnabas nervously says "Yes, but I meant living in the same time." Roger answers that "doppelgangers are the kinds of things Stokes would be the person to ask about." Quentin enters the room and (what do you know) decides to join the drinking. Roger prompts Barnabas to tell Quentin about the marriage, and Quentin congratulates Barnabas, telling him he hopes he'll be very happy. Quentin asks where and when the marriage will be, and Barnabas says that it will be at the old house, with only close friends and family, "as soon as possible." Roger says "Oh, I do hope you'll be patient enough to wait for Liz to come home." Barnabas says he'll wait, and Quentin asks Barnabas if he's seen Stokes. Barnabas tells him that Stokes is still at the old house with Angelique and Julia. Quentin says he needs to talk to him about Daphne, but Barnabas tells him to wait for "just a moment."

Barnabas asks Quentin if he will serve as best man. Quentin says he's honored, and Roger looks a little slighted. Barnabas quickly tells Roger that he "couldn't think of asking him to take such a responsibility when he's so worried about his sister." This placates him a bit, but he adds that "I'm really no longer worried so much, Barnabas. Liz will be fine." Quentin helps Barnabas out with "So, who is going to give away the bride then?" Barnabas picks up the ball and says "Well, er... actually that is what I thought of you doing, Roger. After all, you will be the only father in the room." Roger beams over this prospect and says "Splendid! That's a wonderful idea! I'm honored and I accept!" Barnabas gives Quentin a "thank you" look as Quentin leaves for the old house and Carolyn enters the room. Barnabas tells her he's happy to hear her mother will be all right, and Roger gets Barnabas to tell her the news of the wedding. She's very happy for Barnabas and even hugs him! "It's all happening so fast!" she says, to which Roger agrees again. Carolyn tells Roger she thinks "that only makes it more romantic!" As the three are happily drinking and laughing, Julia enters Collinwood looking sullen.

Roger asks an uncomfortable Julia if she's heard the news, and she quietly says "Yes." Barnabas excuses himself and says he needs to return to the old house. Carolyn asks if she can come and congratulate Angelique, and Barnabas says he will walk her there. Roger asks Carolyn if that means she "won't be coming along to the hospital tonight?" Carolyn says she'll drive there herself later. Julia starts to go upstairs, but Roger tells her to wait as Barnabas and Carolyn leave. He leads her back into the drawing room and closes the doors. Julia asks Roger what he wants to talk about, and Roger tells her that he's "concerned about Liz." Julia replies that she heard that the specialist brought in to treat her is one of the best, but Roger says "Well, technically I'm sure that is correct. But I'd rather that you took over her care once she returned here. She is insisting that Dr. Slater look after her, here in Collinwood." Julia replies that it's really Liz's decision to choose her own doctor, and Roger answers that he knows that, but couldn't Julia look after her anyway, just in case. Julia answers that she normally would, but adds "You may as well know. After Barnabas' wedding, I'm planning on leaving Collinwood and returning to my work at Windcliff exclusively." Roger is not happy to hear this.

Episode 1310

Aired: Friday July 2, 1971

Julia is standing at the fountain when Barnabas approaches. He tells her that Willie mentioned that she was thinking of going away from Collinwood, and he hopes that she will reconsider. She answers that she doesn't feel needed anymore, now that "you are human and.....happy." She turns her back on him. Barnabas puts his hands on her shoulders and tells her that he doesn't "know how happy I could be knowing that I had hurt you. If there was only a way I could make it so you could share in my happiness..." Julia puts a hand on his hand, but as we pull back, we see that Angelique has been watching this through the iron gate.

Back at the old house, Barnabas enters and Angelique greets him. She asks him how his afternoon stroll was, and he says it was "fine." "Where did you go?" she asks, and he answers "I walked through the woods a little, and then around the grounds of Collinwood." Angelique says that sounds pleasant, and Barnabas tells her that perhaps she might accompany him next time. "Yes," she says, "maybe someone at Collinwood would join us. David, or Carolyn..." "Or Julia Hoffman?" Barnabas asks her. She feigns innocence, and Barnabas moves to her and says "You needn't be jealous of my friendship with Julia. It's only friendship." Angelique counters that Barnabas spends a lot of time with her, and he answers "Julia and I have been through a lot together. We have saved each other's lives more than once, how can I not feel close to her, especially now that she wants to leave?" Angelique says "She wants to leave?" Barnabas says "Yes. I saw her on my walk tonight. She told me that she wants to return to Windcliff and take back direct control of it. I tried to convince her otherwise." Angelique asks why, and Barnabas says that he "may never know if he may need her again." Angelique tells Barnabas that she will take care of him always. Barnabas smiles, but reminds Angelique that she is not a doctor. Angelique, angry, tells Barnabas that he should have told her he saw Julia and should not hide things from her. Barnabas answers that he did tell her, and there's nothing to hide anyway. Barnabas looks at Angelique with a sigh and says "We have both been down this road of jealousy before, and look where it led. We cannot keep doing this to each other." Angelique looks thoughtful.

Stokes is visiting Barnabas later that evening. He and Barnabas are looking over old maps of Collinwood and Barnabas is filling Stokes in as to what the town was like when the maps were originally drawn. "I'm especially interested in this map of the old waterfront, before it needed to be rebuilt after the nor'easter some years ago.." Barnabas looks over the map and tells Stokes that the docks were originally "built by Isaac Collins, the patriarch of the family, back in the 17th century. Of course, the village expanded over the course of time." "What did you think of it when you first saw it again, Barnabas?" Stokes asks. Barnabas looks thoughtful for a moment and says "I was overwhelmed, but then again, I was overwhelmed by nearly everything I experienced. I don't know how I can make you truly understand what it felt like to live again after all those years, even if you really couldn't call it living. If you don't mind, Professor, I'd rather not dwell on it." "Perhaps you'd rather dwell further back in the past, as in the way you've restored this mansion to its original design." Barnabas pours Stokes a sherry and says "There are many advantages to living in the past, Professor. But the more time goes on, the more I grow accustomed to various changes." Stokes adds "Yes. For example, you would never find a woman like Julia Hoffman back in your time, a woman trained as a doctor and scientist." Barnabas looks thoughtful and says "Yes, that is true." Angelique enters the room, and Barnabas, realizing she's probably been listening, says "but women in that time had their own particular unique charms." Angelique smiles, but is still a little cold to him. "Even in these modern times though, there are old fashioned people," Angelique says. Stokes asks her what she means, and she answers that "I understand there may be some people who would think it scandalous for me to be living here with Barnabas, since no one but the people in this room know that we are actually married." Stokes agrees, but adds "that's certainly an easy thing to attend to." Angelique wonders what this means, and Barnabas takes her hand. "I had mentioned it to Professor Stokes," he says. "Since no one in this time knows that we are married, perhaps we should remarry, here in this house, and renew our vows." Angelique gives him a big smile, and then a hug saying "I'd love to!"

Julia arrives at the old house as Barnabas, Angelique and Stokes continue to look over his maps and discuss past life in Collinsport. Barnabas tells her he's glad to see her, and that he hopes that her visit means that she has changed her mind. She gives no answer, but says hello to Stokes. Angelique offers Julia a drink which she refuses, and then tells Julia that she has "wonderful news! Barnabas is going to marry me again, right here in this house!" This knocks Julia for a loop a bit, and she can barely say "Congratulations" before Angelique is holding Barnabas' hands and adding "We will renew our vows of love and start fresh. Just the two of us." Julia is still taking this in when Barnabas asks her if she is all right. Julia says yes, and congratulations. Angelique tells Julia that she is invited to the wedding, and Julia tells Angelique "Thank you. Perhaps a wedding like that would be a happy way for me to bid farewell to Collinwood." Barnabas is shocked to hear her say this, but Angelique smiles slyly.

Episode 1309

Aired: Thursday July 1, 1971

We see a replay of Stokes' placing Liz under hypnosis and Alan entering asking what is going on before the titles. When we come back, Stokes tells Alan that he had snapped his fingers because he had just remembered that he left his watch behind at home. Alan tells him that Liz shouldn't be having any visitors because it's almost time for the preparations for her surgery. Liz tells Alan it's all right and that Professor Stokes is a close friend of the family. "Besides," she adds. "there are still three and a half hours to go before the operation begins at two." Alan looks at his watch and says "Perhaps, but I still want you to be ready." Stokes smiles at Liz' estimate, and politely excuses himself with a goodbye. Liz asks Alan what kind of preparation she needs anyway, and he takes her hand again to remind her that while he may be an expert in performing this operation, there are still some risks involved, and she will need to consider them. Liz smiles at him and, picking up a ledger and pen from a side table, says that she's already made detailed plans for every possibility, and taking his hand tighter, adds "Especially for when after I've recovered."

In a waiting area, Roger is pacing and Carolyn is trying to read a magazine. The clock reads 3:30 next to a television tuned to a soap opera with an ABC logo over it. Roger switches off the set and says "Rubbish!" (Sorry, couldn't resist). Carolyn tells him to calm down and that everything will be all right. "I don't see how you can be so calm," he scoffs. Carolyn answers that she knows that her mother will be all right because she trusts Dr. Slater. "There's something about him that gives me confidence. He just seems so intelligent, that he knows what he is doing." Roger laughs a little and says that maybe the reason that he's so nervous is that whenever he looks at Slater, he "still sees a groundskeeper." Carolyn tells Roger he shouldn't be such a snob, and that if anything "The family should be proud that we helped him out when he was younger. Think of what he's doing for mother as way of paying us back." Roger says he'd like to think of things that way, but then looks at the clock again and wonders what is taking so long. Meanwhile, Stokes comes to Collinwood looking for Julia, who he finds in the drawing room. She tells him that they are waiting for Roger to call with news about Liz, and Stokes tells Julia that he has some good news of his own about Liz, being that she is no longer disconnected from time as far as he can tell. Julia is glad, but still watches the phone with a grim "I suppose that depends on what happens in surgery."

Roger is still pacing as Alan comes through a door, still in surgical scrubs. Roger and Carolyn run to him and ask him what happened, and he tells them that Liz will be just fine. Carolyn is tearfully happy, and suddenly hugs Alan, but then backs away when she sees some blood spots on his scrubs. She babbles about "mother's blood....I touched my mother's blood...." before fainting. Alan leads her over to a couch while Roger frets that he knew "Carolyn was holding in all of her worries, trying to be confident enough for the both of us. The strain must have gotten to her." Alan calls for a nurse and then tells Roger that Carolyn will be fine, and that the operation went "like clockwork. There were no problems. Your sister is a very very strong woman." The nurse gives Carolyn some water as she comes to, and she apologizes to Alan, who tells her that her reaction was "perfectly understandable and nothing to be ashamed of. Roger asks Alan when they can see Liz, and Alan says "She'll be moved to the recovery unit shortly, but she won't come out from the anesthesia for a few more hours." Carolyn asks how long Liz will have to stay in the hospital, and Alan answers "Oh, probably just a few more days, just while we double check everything. Then she'll be back at home, good as new." Carolyn thanks Alan gushingly, and then goes off to "call Collinwood and tell everyone the good news." Roger holds out his hand for a shake, telling Alan he did a good job. Alan shakes his hand and says "I'm glad you think so. Liz wanted me to supervise her post-operative recovery, so you'll probably be seeing a lot of me around Collinwood for a while." Roger, shocked, says "What?" Alan smiles at him.

Alan pats Roger on the back and says "Liz wrote out all the instructions, but I'm sure she'll tell you when she wakes up." Roger asks Alan what will happen to his practice in Boston, and Alan tells Roger that "my people back there can handle it. Elizabeth is a very important patient to me. I want to see to it that she's healed in every way." Roger tells Alan that he'll try to arrange for a room for him at the Collinsport Inn as long as he's looking after Liz. Alan tells him "Thank you, that's very generous. But Liz has already left instructions with your Mrs. Johnson to prepare a room for me at Collinwood. I'll be staying there to watch over Liz's recovery as her personal physician. She'll tell you more about it when she wakes up." Roger watches as Alan goes back beyond the "restricted area" doors as Carolyn comes back. She tells him that everyone at Collinwood was "so happy to hear about mother," but then notices Roger's pained expression. When she asks him what's wrong, he only answers "It seems we will be having a guest at Collinwood for a while," with his characteristic frown.

Episode 1308

Aired: Wednesday June 30, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's close and the titles, Stokes visits Quentin at Collinwood. Quentin asks him if he's found anything out about Daphne, and Stokes tells him that he hasn't. "I will need to meet Daphne all over again and talk to her," he adds. Quentin is confused as to why, and Stokes reminds him that when he returned from 1840 to this time, his counterpart who had been there before "is no longer here. All the memories and experiences that took place before Barnabas returned once again are gone." Quentin frets on how "weeks of leads are now gone," but Stokes tells him that they should be able to catch up very quickly, "as long as you tell me everything that could be of any help." Quentin wonders what "everything" includes.

Quentin has told Stokes a great deal, enough for Stokes to marvel "That is a fantastic theory, that Petofi's powers were so great, he could re-embody a spirit long dead. I will need to research this much further." Quentin tells Stokes not to tell Daphne about this theory of her origin, since "I have no idea how such knowledge may affect her." He looks at Stokes as if he's testing his trust on this one, and Stokes' "Yes, I agree. I will leave that in your hands, Mr. Collins" boosts Quentin's confidence in him. "I brought back a wealth of material from 1840, and there should be enough there to get me started. I will need to look back into any records of such sorcery and see if Petofi or another like him was involved." Willie comes bursting in, and tells Quentin that he needs to talk to him. Quentin tells Willie to wait a moment, and sends Stokes on his way. Annoyed, Quentin asks Willie what's so important, and Willie answers "It's Dr. Hoffman. She's thinking of leaving. I don't know what to tell Barnabas, I just don't know how to tell him!" Quentin raises an eyebrow.

"I take it you want me to tell him," Quentin says. Willie remarks on how Barnabas trusts Quentin "more than me" and how "he'll listen to you if you tell him to do something." Quentin asks what can he do if Julia really wants to leave. "Maybe it's for the best, Willie" Quentin adds. "I don't know if I'd want to stay to watch someone I....cared about be married to someone else." Willie responds that "But he might need her again! He's okay now, but you never know with him! It's happened before that things get messed up! And Dr. Hoffman is the only one who can handle him when he's like that!" Quentin scoffs at this notion, but Willie adds "Barnabas told me that Angelique was the one who made him that way to begin with, but now that she's lost her power, she's not mean anymore. I don't really get it, but it's his life, you know?" Quentin answers "Yes, it is, Willie." Willie answers "But I was thinkin' if something went wrong, and she has no power anymore, that she couldn't help him even if she wanted to!" Quentin tells Willie he's being ridiculous and that nothing is going to happen, but Willie says "I hope you're right, but I still think you should talk to Barnabas and see if he can get Dr. Hoffman to stay! You might be wrong!" Quentin thinks about this a moment.

Julia returns to Collinwood and finds Quentin. He tells her that Willie had mentioned that she was leaving Collinwood, and Julia says that this is true. "Willie was afraid of something going wrong and all of us needing you again," Quentin adds. "I'm beginning to think he may have something there." Julia thanks Quentin, but reminds him that she'll only be as far away as Windcliff, and that Professor Stokes is still in town to help with any unforeseen happenings. Quentin thinks this over as we cut to Stokes visiting Liz in the hospital. He asks her how she's been feeling, and she says fine. Stokes asks her if she is "still feeling disconnected from the passing of time" as she had told him before, and Liz says she does, but "not as much as before." Stokes thinks that this could mean that the symptoms are fading, or that she has simply been disoriented further by being in a hospital room. He starts to twirl his monocle on its chain and asks Liz to look at it. He starts to put her under, and Liz is soon in a trance. Stokes begins to tell her that after she awakens, she will be "in tune with time, connected to every passing moment of reality." He instructs her to remember this "forever" even though she will forget that he has put her under. As he counts down to wake her up, Alan enters the room just as Stokes snaps his fingers and demands to know "what is going on in here?"

Episode 1307

Aired: Tuesday June 29, 1971

Barnabas is showing Angelique the various ways he's restored the old house after moving in, and Angelique remarks what a nice job he's done, and how she's "so looking forward to once again being the mistress of this house." Julia enters and tells Barnabas that she needs to talk to him, looking at Angelique and adding "privately," to Angelique's annoyance.

After the titles, Barnabas tells Julia that Angelique shouldn't be "excluded," but Angelique says it's okay and goes upstairs. Barnabas wants to know what is "so important," and Julia tells him that she thinks that Stokes may be suspecting "the truth" about Quentin after being told everything about Barnabas. "Is that all?" Barnabas scoffs. "I'll discuss this with Quentin. I'm sure he feels the same trust for Stokes that I do." Julia thinks this might be a good approach. Barnabas takes a long pause and then adds "Is that really the reason you came over here, Julia?" Julia says she doesn't know what Barnabas means, and Barnabas answers "Things have changed, Julia. I am sorry but you will have to adjust. We have both been through a lot, but Angelique is my wife now." Hurt, Julia answers "I... suppose she always was...." Barnabas looks at her and says "Perhaps. But in any case, I must devote my time to her now. I know we can still be friends. In time, you will see that." A teary Julia says she "hopes so."

Barnabas and Angelique enter the foyer of Collinwood and bump into Mrs. Johnson. He asks her how Liz is doing, and Mrs. Johnson says that "that Dr. Slater has scheduled her for surgery. I don't know how she can be so brave, I'd be very scared to get an operation." Barnabas tells her that he's sure that Dr. Slater knows what he's doing, since he is "purported to be one of the top men in his field." Mrs. Johnson laughs and says "Tell that to Mr. Roger Collins!" Tiring of her, Barnabas asks where Quentin is, and she directs them to the drawing room. Quentin is having a drink when Barnabas enters. "Barnabas!" he says. "I'm so glad to see you again.... this day." "Exactly," answers Barnabas. Quentin sees Angelique and says "You! You must be awfully proud of yourself. You saved him and then he could save you. I propose a toast!" Angelique thanks him and takes the drink he has poured her, but then adds "I don't mean to be rude, but even though Barnabas has told me all about you, I don't feel as if I really know you." Quentin is confused, and Barnabas reminds him that "this Angelique came straight from 1840 to here. She never experienced meeting us in 1897 and has no memory of it." Looking her over, Quentin laughs a bit and says "My dear, you're all the better for that! I'd like to forget a lot of what happened back then myself!" before downing his drink. Barnabas closes the drawing room doors and tells Quentin that he came by to "discuss something important." Quentin says "Oh?" and Barnabas answers "How well do you trust Professor Stokes?"

Quentin tells Barnabas that he likes "that funny old man and the way his mind works." Barnabas tells Quentin that he felt an "obligation" to tell Stokes the truth about himself after everything Stokes had done to help the Collins family "since I know how frustrated he had always been over the half-truths Julia and I had given him. I know now how he enjoys knowledge for its own sake, and I felt I owed him." "What does this have to do with me?" Quentin asks. Barnabas answers that Stokes' knowledge of Angelique and him may lead him to become "more curious" about what happened in 1897, the relationship of Quentin to the ghost that once haunted Collinwood, and so on. Quentin says he wouldn't want someone "looking into such connections" since he's afraid it may destroy his relationship with the family. Angelique counters that Stokes will be a great help in discovering more about Daphne, and Barnabas adds that "perhaps even Stokes' knowledge could help you to become free of your portrait without....consequences." Quentin thinks about this and says "Maybe. I just haven't known him as long as you, Barnabas. I don't know." Barnabas tells Quentin to work closely with Stokes in helping Daphne, and then he'll "see that he can be trusted. Besides, telling him may prevent others from finding unnecessary things out if Stokes' curiosity was piqued and he began uncovering things on his own." Quentin nods.

Julia is standing by the fountain looking sad when Willie happens by. He asks her what's wrong, and she says "nothing," nut Willie isn't fooled. He asks her why she's not happy for Barnabas, now that he's human again. "He even made up with Angelique, after everything that happened, you know? I never thought he could do that. I think he's really changed." Julia agrees that "things have changed," and Willie starts to get clued in. He asks her if she's upset that Barnabas is with Angelique now, and though Julia denies it, Willie doesn't believe her. When he presses her though, she gets a little angry and answers "It makes no difference to me, Willie. Barnabas is not my whole life. I have other responsibilities." Willie says he knows, but before he can finish Julia adds "It may be time for me to get back to them." "What do you mean?" asks Willie. Julia answers "Perhaps it's time I returned to Windcliff, and left Collinwood for good." Willie is stunned to hear this.

Episode 1306

Aired: Monday June 28, 1971

Nancy Barrett's voiceover: "A new day has dawned at Collinwood, bringing a new light into the darkness that was once the mistress of the great house's life. A man from her past has returned, determined to use every skill he has to save her life..."

In the hospital room, Alan moves towards Liz. He starts to take her pulse and she starts to wake up. She looks over to him. He smiles at her and says "Hello, Elizabeth." She recognizes him, and says weakly "Alan! What.... how..." He shushes her softly and says "They brought me in to be your doctor. I've been a cardiologist in Boston for many years now." "You are my doctor?" Liz asks. He answers "Yes," and then moves his pulse taking hand from her wrist to her hand and adds "You're going to be just fine, I promise you." He raises her hand and kisses it. Liz smiles at him.

After the titles, Liz tells Alan he's being "fairly presumptuous" with his hand kiss, and he answers that he's a "man who loves to take long chances. How have you been all these years, Liz?" She says she's been "mostly fine, until now." He tells her "that's why I'm here. Your doctors decided you needed a specialist. I've gone over your file and checked the test results. I know I can solve all of your problems." She tells him that solving all of her problems would be an impressive feat. He changes the subject and tells her how beautiful her daughter Carolyn is, and how proud she must be. "I must admit I never though Paul Stoddard was right for you, but maybe it was for the best." Liz says she'd rather not discuss the past, and asks Alan how he has been. He tells her how he went to medical school on a scholarship and interned in Chicago before setting up his practice in Boston. Liz asks him why he never kept in touch, and he says that he had gotten married and "also wanted to forget the past." Liz asks him his wife's name, but Alan says "Her name was Roberta, but she died several years ago." Liz says she's sorry, but is obviously thinking about this when Alan says they should discuss her condition.

Carolyn and Roger are in the hospital room with Alan and Liz. Alan has just finished telling them his diagnosis, and that he is recommending surgery. Carolyn is scared over this prospect, but Alan assures her that "this is not that complicated an operation, and it is my specialty." Roger asks him what kind of guarantees he can give them, and Alan tells him that "there are never any guarantees. But there is a very strong probability that with this operation, Elizabeth will be just fine." Roger starts to insist on bringing in other doctors for a second opinion, but Liz interrupts and says that she "trusts Alan completely" and will go ahead with the operation. Carolyn tells Liz she's being very brave, and asks her if she is sure. Liz says yes, and Roger is angry, still insisting on another opinion. Alan tells Roger that other doctors will recommend the same thing, "or their lack of experience with this kind of thing would be obvious." Liz tells Carolyn and Roger that she will go ahead with the surgery because "I know Alan. I know how brilliant he is, and I know how he refuses to fail at anything." Roger tells her she's risking her life on that opinion, and Liz snaps back that it's her life to risk, and she'll live it any way she wants. At Liz' request, Alan leaves the room to schedule the operation.

Outside Liz's room, Carolyn asks Roger why he seems to have no confidence in Alan, and Roger tells Carolyn simply that "she wouldn't understand." Carolyn gets mad and tells Roger that it's obvious Alan "knows mother from a long time ago. What aren't you telling me about him?" Roger tells Carolyn that "there's no big secret" and that Alan was one of the Collins' groundskeepers back when he was in school. "He and your mother were friendly, and since he was going to college at night, he helped her with her studies." Carolyn smiles and asks Roger if they were more than friends, and Roger scoffs and says "No, thank heavens. If I remember, Alan suddenly received a full scholarship to medical school and had to leave Collinsport before anything could develop along those lines." Carolyn wonders aloud what her mother was like "at my age." Roger looks thoughtful for a moment and mutters "No one could tell her anything."

Carolyn is at her mother's side, and tells her "Uncle Roger told me Dr. Slater had once been a Collins servant." Liz says yes, and adds that she thinks Roger still thinks of him that way. "Were you friends with him mother?" asks Carolyn. Liz smiles and says yes, "but that was some years before you were born. I was very young. Alan was going to college at night and always talked of traveling around the world. I loved hearing about it." Carolyn asks Liz why she never stayed in touch with him after he "suddenly got that scholarship and left town." Liz says she never really thought about it, and "I soon met your father after that anyway." Carolyn says that maybe this is her second chance, and Liz says "Yes, maybe it is."
