Episode 1257

Aired Tuesday April 20, 1971

After a replay of the closing scene from Monday and the titles, Barnabas visits the college to find Anderson, in order to ask him about Daphne. He finds Stokes instead, who asks him about Roxanne. Barnabas replies that they haven't found anything yet, but warns Stokes to keep his eyes open for strange happenings. Stokes remarks that probably the first thing for her to do would be to gather protectors to guard her during the daytime. "How much do you know about vampires, Mr. Collins?" Stokes says curiously, to which Barnabas snaps "Only what I've read in some books, Professor. I've always considered them a myth." "How curious," Stokes replies, "how many myths are based upon strange realities."

Roger is phoning various boarding schools to find out about schedules and enrollment when Carolyn enters and starts eavesdropping. She asks Roger what he's doing, and Roger tells her that he is thinking of sending David away rather than hire a new governess, since David may be too old to still be living at home. Carolyn talks about how much she would miss him, but in an odd way that doesn't sound like her. Roger doesn't notice this, but is taken with how much Carolyn wants to keep David around.

Barnabas returns to Julia and tells her what Stokes had said, and that he could not find Anderson. Julia thinks Anderson may be out looking for Roxanne by himself. Barnabas asks her why he would risk that, and Julia reflects on her own past and answers how she would understand how someone might be selfish after discovering a legendary thing, much the way she was when she first met Barnabas. Barnabas wonders who Roxanne will claim as her servants, and then thinks back to his dream, where everyone at Collinwood were vampires, and starts to fear that it may be coming true. "But how can we warn them?" he wonders.

Roger is still working in the study after dark. Carolyn enters and asks him why he's working so hard. Roger replies that since he spent so much time researching schools during the day, this is the only time he has to go over the books and such. Carolyn asks him if he wants any help, and he laughs condescendingly about the complexities of the Collins business, and asks her to just bring him some tea. On her way out and without Roger noticing, Carolyn unlocks one of the windows and pushes it slightly open before leaving with a smile.

Later that night, Roger is still working at his desk as fog gathers at the window. At first he is oblivious to it, but suddenly he looks up, and then turns slowly to the window. The window swings open and the fog spills into the room as Roger rises and walks over to step into it. From out of the fog, Roxanne appears before Roger, who is in a trance. She smiles and bites him.

Episode 1256

Aired: Monday April 19, 1971

Joan Bennett's voiceover: "The bright morning at Collinwood after a stormy night. A seance has released an evil force upon those that live here, though the true depths of that evil remain to be exposed." As we see Carolyn adjusting her scarf in the mirror, the voice over continues "One who was once under the influence of a dark force many years earlier finds herself once again a servant to another, powerless to control her actions with her will taken from her. On this day, events have begun that may mean the destruction of the Collins family...."

Liz enters Carolyn's room and comments that she missed breakfast by sleeping so late. Carolyn says she didn't notice, and Liz asks her if she feels all right. "Fine," she answers aloofly, and Liz thinks it's too dark in the room. When she pulls the drapes back to let in the sunlight, Carolyn winces and hides her eyes from it. Liz looks concerned.

After the titles, Carolyn is still standing in the shadows as Liz asks her if she's sure she's all right. She says she's just tired and the bright light hurts her eyes. She takes a pair of sunglasses out of a drawer and says she needs to go into town. As the two head down the stairs, Liz is still wondering if she's feeling all right, perhaps she's been working too hard on her studies. Carolyn assures her she is fine, and then Roger enters the foyer from the drawing room. Liz tells Roger she needs to discuss something with him. Roger asks Carolyn why she missed breakfast, and Carolyn says she guesses she's been working too hard, and leaves. When Roger asks Liz what she wants to discuss before he heads off to the cannery, she simply says "David."

Roger asks her what she means, and Liz says she wants to hire a new governess for David, with Maggie gone. Roger says he hasn't looked for new governesses lately since he's been thinking that David is too old to still be at home, and should go off to boarding school like Hallie Stokes has. Liz hesitates at this idea, though Roger reminds her that he had gone off to boarding school by the time he was David's age, and that it would help David to mature. There is a knock at the door, and it is Barnabas. He is looking for Quentin, who is up in his room, but before Barnabas can go upstairs, Roger asks him into the drawing room for his opinion on David. Barnabas remarks that the house would be a bit lonelier without David around, and Roger scoffs that he should have kept Carolyn there to support his position. Liz remarks that Carolyn didn't seem herself that morning, and Barnabas is concerned.

Quentin is reading in his room when Barnabas enters. Barnabas tells Quentin of the seance and the danger for everyone, and asks him to keep his eye out for anything unusual without tipping off Roger & Liz. Quentin remarks that the only unusual thing he's noticed lately is how familiar Daphne seems to him, yet he has no memory of ever having meeting her. He asks Barnabas if perhaps they met briefly back when Quentin had lost his memory, but Barnabas tells him it maybe more complicated than that. When Quentin asks why, Barnabas tells him it's because the last time Quentin saw her, before he and Julia had changed the history of 1840, she was a ghost.

Back from commercial, Barnabas has evidently explained the 1840 time change to Quentin, but this only confuses him more as to his feelings for Daphne. "Perhaps there are suppressed memories from the other timeline that some people like yourself are more sensitive to," suggests Barnabas. Quentin thinks aloud "So that Daphne married my namesake, Great Uncle Quentin Collins, whom we all referred to as the mad scientist! He lived in New York, we never saw him, I don't think he had much fondness for my father, uncle, or grandmother. I think I only got his name after he died and left them some money." Barnabas feels the resemblance might just be a coincidence, but Quentin tells Barnabas that David seemed to recognize her too. Barnabas decides they must learn more about her, and Quentin says he will help with Roxanne if Barnabas helps with Daphne, since he "thinks he's falling in love with her."

Episode 1255

Aired Friday April 16, 1971

After a replay of the end of Thursday's episode and the opening titles, we are back at the aftermath of the seance after Roxanne has escaped. Barnabas is frantic, demanding that everyone search for Roxanne before she can harm anyone. Julia assures Barnabas it wasn't his fault, and asks Sebastian what went wrong. Sebastian says that once certain dark forces overwhelm one's psychic abilities, anything can happen. "You can catch the devil but you can't hold him," Stokes muses, "but we do know one thing - she must return to that coffin before sunrise or be destroyed." Anderson points out that she may have other coffins out there, as most "in her condition" he says (in deference to Barnabas) often make rather complex arrangements to insure their survival. Barnabas asks how do they find her, and Stokes says that if Anderson is right, it may be impossible.

Refusing to accept Stokes' notion of impossibility, Barnabas presses Sebastian as to any kind of clue he may have found in her belongings. Anderson asks how they knew where to find such things, and Barnabas tells him that Roxanne had been originally trapped among them. Sebastian insists that he found nothing of importance, but Julia suggests that perhaps Stokes would be a better judge of such things. Anderson interrupts and says he would like to see her belongings, since it would finally give him the chance to study close-up the things he has read and written about for years. Anderson offers to go to the psychic shop with Sebastian and search it thoroughly for clues. Stokes defers to Anderson in this matter. Barnabas implores him to take some kind of protection, perhaps the silver cross from Roxanne's coffin, but Anderson tells Barnabas he will need to stop at his office first anyway for some material and can get crucifixes there. "Besides, " he adds "if she does return to that coffin, it would be better to keep the silver cross inside it." He leads Sebastian out as Barnabas sadly looks out the window and hears the dogs howling in the storm.

Julia has returned to Collinwood, and finds an angry Carolyn in the drawing room. Carolyn complains how she has not heard from Sebastian lately, and Julia tries to tell her that he has been busy without revealing too much. Carolyn wonders if thereÕs something about her that scares men away, but Julia assures her that Sebastian will be back.

Anderson and Sebastian enter the psychic shop and turn the lights on. "Show me where it is" Anderson says, but Sebastian snaps back "Don't you already know?" before Anderson slaps him hard across the face, knocking him down. "You did well at the seance, Mr. Shaw," Anderson says malevolently, "pray you don't disappoint me now." Sebastian pleads that Anderson "got what he wanted" and should "leave him alone." Anderson smiles and tells Sebastian he should know how impossible that is, and for Sebastian to fetch what he wants. Sebastian goes into Roxanne's room to get the material he found while Anderson looks around the psychic shop with an evil smile. Sebastian drops the box in front of Anderson, who begins to look through it for a moment, until he finds the album Sebastian had looked through. As Anderson leafs through it, Sebastian simply looks at him and says "How? How did it happen?" As we see the page Anderson has stopped on, we see what terrified Sebastian so much earlier - a sepia toned photograph dated 1909 of Anderson and Roxanne in an Edwardian sitting room. "All in due time, Mr. Shaw, all in due time," Anderson says.

Carolyn is asleep in her room at Collinwood as the storm continues outside. A clap of thunder awakens her, but before she can roll over and try to sleep again, she notices something by the window. There is a growing fog outside her window with moonlight behind it. Carolyn stares at it a moment, and then seems to fall into a trance. She silently gets up out of bed and walks to the window. She swings it open, and from out of the fog, Roxanne appears. Roxanne looks at Carolyn a moment and moves her hair aside before biting her in the neck.

Episode 1254

Aired Thursday April 15, 1971

Julia and Barnabas are discussing that evening's seance in the old house when there is a knock on the door. It is Stokes, who has gotten Barnabas' message and wants to know what is so urgent. Barnabas tells him that he is invited to a seance that evening. Stokes is intrigued.

After the titles, Stokes asks Barnabas the purpose of the seance, and Barnabas tells him it is an attempt to contact the spirit of an imprisoned vampire. Stokes asks for a drink after hearing this. Barnabas looks at Julia for some support, who tells Stokes that they originally asked him to help since they trust him. Upon hearing this, Barnabas decides to prove it by leading Stokes to the bookcase and showing him the secret room where Roxanne's coffin lies chained. "Originally asked?" Stokes says, and then Barnabas tells him that Sebastian and Professor Anderson will be running the seance.

At Collinwood, Quentin is meeting Daphne again. They go into the drawing room. He apologizes for having her come to Collinwood again, but assures her that his car will be repaired soon. She says she doesn't mind, as long as they're not late. Quentin checks his watch and finds it's not working. Daphne asks if she can get it repaired for him, and Quentin flirtatiously tells her he's had the watch a long time and wonders if he can trust her with it as he takes it off and hands it to her. He tells her he'll go upstairs and get another. She holds the watch for a moment and studies it, and then Quentin returns, telling her how strange he feels being able to trust someone, yet there's something about her that makes him want to tell her everything. Daphne is unnerved by this a little, and asks him if he really means it. He kisses her hand with an "Of course I do." She remembers that she won't have a chance to get to the jewelers tomorrow with all her papers to grade and she gives Quentin the watch back. He shrugs, drops it on the desk and they leave arm in arm. Daphne looks relieved for some reason.

That evening at the old house, Barnabas and Julia have put a table and some chairs out while Stokes closes the bookcase door to the secret room. After a moment, Sebastian and Anderson arrive, stepping in from the storm beginning outside. They are both surprised to see Stokes there, but Barnabas tells them that "the more experts we have here the better." They take their seats and Sebastian begins the festivities as they join hands. After Sebastian has called to Roxanne for a while, Julia begins to swoon and go into a trance. Sebastian tries to get her to talk, and she starts to moan "Barnabas....Barnabas...." Barnabas answers with "Roxanne! Speak to me! Speak to us!" Julia continues to moan "Barnabas, danger, you are in danger. All of you..." Barnabas asks "Why Roxanne, why?" but Julia answers "I am not Roxanne.... I am Angelique!"

Back at the seance, Stokes remembers Angelique, Sebastian is losing control, and Barnabas is excited to talk to Angelique. "Angelique!" he says. "What danger? Tell me! Did you warn me of it in my dream?" Anderson wonders what this may mean before Sebastian starts calling Roxanne again. Barnabas objects, wanting to talk to Angelique more. As Barnabas and Sebastian argue, Stokes implores them not to break the circle. Anderson has closed his eyes as Barnabas continues to call for Angelique. Julia suddenly yells "NO!!!" and we see the bookcase door opening by itself! The front door blows open and wind fills the room. Sebastian and Barnabas see this, but Anderson, between them with eyes closed, holds them both to the table telling them they cannot break the trance while Julia is possessed or Julia may die. The door continues opening, and Roxanne's coffin slides out on its own. Barnabas is struggling to deal with this, but he knows he cannot harm Julia, and is helpless. To everyone's astonishment, the chains break and fall away from the coffin, which begins to open. Roxanne sits up and smiles. Sebastian yells at Roxanne to return to her coffin, but she steps out and stands before them, free and triumphant. Julia is out of her trance and calls to Barnabas and Stokes to stop Roxanne, and when Barnabas hears she is fine, he breaks free of Anderson's grip - but as he does, Roxanne dematerializes before his eyes.

Episode 1253

Aired Wednesday April 14, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's closing scene and the titles, we see that Quentin is preparing to go on a date with Daphne, who has arrived at Collinwood. David comes downstairs asking if Quentin wants a rematch at chess before he sees Daphne. Quentin introduces her to David, who seems to find her familiar. She mentions that she had been to the house before, but David says he was visiting Hallie Stokes at school that night. Quentin identifies with his strange sense of knowing her, but not knowing how.

Sebastian has returned to the old house. Barnabas asks him if he found anything useful among Roxanne's belongings, and he abruptly lies "nothing." "Not even anything that could be of use to an expert like Anderson?" Barnabas asks, and Sebastian repeats "No, definitely not." Barnabas seems a little suspicious of Sebastian and is about to inquire further when there is a knock at the door - and it is Anderson.

Anderson enters, says good evening, and takes a long look at the house. He recognizes that it has been restored quite accurately, and compliments Barnabas on his knowledge of the house. Barnabas offers him a sherry (of course) and begins to discuss why Anderson is there. Anderson remarks that while he has studied vampirism extensively, he has always viewed it more as folklore than as history, and that most of the cases he has come across turned out to be criminally insane murderers who were "quite indeed alive" rather than the "undead." Barnabas tells him that there are indeed such things as the undead, and that he has a real vampire, trapped and imprisoned. Anderson is intrigued.

Anderson is skeptical of Barnabas' statement, but Barnabas says it is the truth. Anderson asks if the vampire is "sealed in his coffin, immobilized by a silver cross" and Barnabas answers, "Yes, she is." "A woman..." says Anderson as he paces and thinks. "Where is she?" Barnabas tells him he will show him "in due time." "If you have her trapped, why haven't you destroyed her, Mr. Collins?" asks Anderson. "Certainly you know the scale of the evil you are dealing with." Barnabas looks remorseful for a moment and answers "Evil perhaps, but I cannot think of her as the monster you describe, rather as a suffering human plagued with an unholy affliction." Anderson remarks how sentimental Barnabas is, and asks him what he wants to do. "Is there any way to communicate with her without freeing her?" Barnabas asks. Anderson thinks a moment, and suggests the only way may be to hold a seance to contact her spirit from within her trance. Barnabas agrees, and asks Sebastian to help out. He looks at Anderson and then agrees that it will take place tomorrow evening.

Episode 1252

Aired Tuesday April 13, 1971

Sebastian enters the old house and finds Barnabas waiting. Barnabas asks him what he found out from Stokes, and Sebastian tells him that Stokes was out of town. Barnabas is disappointed, but Sebastian tells him that he had talked to Professor Anderson, and found out that he "is an expert on vampires." Barnabas doesn't know whether to be happy or worried.

Barnabas asks Sebastian how much Anderson knows about such things, and Sebastian seems pretty confident in Anderson's knowledge. "Do you think we can trust him?" Barnabas asks. "I don't see why not," answers Sebastian. Julia enters and says hello to Sebastian, and Barnabas tells her about Anderson. Julia would rather wait for Stokes to return, but Barnabas, impatient as always when a woman is involved, tells Sebastian that Anderson may well prove to be useful after all.

At Collinwood, Barnabas has telephoned Anderson and has arranged for him to come to the old house to hear more about 'something that will interest you. I'd rather not discuss it over the phone, if you don't mind." Barnabas thanks him and hangs up. Sebastian asks Barnabas how he can live in a house without a telephone, and Barnabas tells him of the accurate restoration of the old house, and how "Perhaps using the phone here gives me an excuse to visit the family." Barnabas mentions that Anderson will no doubt want to know as much about Roxanne as he can, and Sebastian mentions that all of her things are still in the old psychic shop they used together. "I haven't been back there in a long time," he says. Barnabas insists that he go there and gather whatever he can before meeting them back at the old house.

Sebastian returns to the psychic shop and finds his way through the dusty interior. He searches through some papers and desk drawers and finds nothing of interest. He moves to a back room. It's Roxanne's room, and it is windowless. He switches on a light, and starts to look through her closet. Behind some old clothes, he finds a large trunk. He pulls it out of the closet, and begins to work on the lock.

Sebastian has gotten a crowbar and is prying the lock open. It flies open, and he opens the trunk. There are some older clothes inside, but also a box tied with some string. He rips the string off and starts to look through the papers in the box, reading some, and throwing others aside. He stops on one handwritten sheet and reads aloud "October 6, 19....10!" and takes a deep breath before continuing. He finds an album underneath the box and begins to leaf through it. Suddenly, he stops on one page. His eyes open wide at what he sees and he gasps in horror.....

Episode 1251

Aired: Monday April 12, 1971

At the old house, Barnabas is stirring in his sleep, and then the dream-sequence music and lighting effects begin as we fade to.... Barnabas is standing in his living room amongst some dream fog when the front door opens. Barnabas looks and it is Angelique! She beckons him to follow her, with a sad face. He asks her what she wants, but she says nothing. He follows her out of the house. They enter Collinwood, which also has some dream fog floating around. "Why are we here? Why can't you tell me?" he asks. She stops by the doors of the drawing room, which are closed, and turns to face him. She shakes her head "No" while pointing to the doors and then to him. "What is in there, Angelique? What shouldn't I see?" he says. Angelique begins to weep silently, and the doors fly open as she vanishes. Barnabas walks inside and sees Quentin, dressed rather nicely in a jacket and ascot, sitting and staring off into space. Carolyn, Liz and Roger sit surrounding him, and all turn to see Barnabas as he entered. "Quentin! What is wrong? Quentin! Why can't you hear me?" Barnabas says. Carolyn, Liz and Roger all rise together and slowly approach Barnabas, looking sinister. He calls to them, but they do not respond. He begins to back away, slowly, and as they come closer, all three open their mouths to reveal long fangs... Barnabas screams in terror and wakes up in horror.

After the titles, Barnabas is pacing in the old house living room when Julia arrives. She asks him what is wrong, and he describes his dream to her. Barnabas is not sure what the dream means, but he is sure that it was created by Angelique's spirit for some reason. Julia asks for what reason, and Barnabas says he thinks it is some sort of a warning.

Over at Collinwood, Carolyn is studying a book on the occult and making notes in a notebook when the telephone rings. It's Sebastian, and after some flirtation on the telephone, she agrees to meet him for lunch at the Blue Whale. She passes Roger on the way out, and when he asks her where she is off to and she says to meet Sebastian, he remarks that he doesn't understand how an astrologer can earn an "honest living." Carolyn smiles and says they are only having lunch, not getting married.

Back at the old house, Julia and Barnabas are still trying to interpret the dream. Barnabas believes that the vampirism in the dream must be connected to Roxanne, but Julia thinks otherwise. She hesitates to tell Barnabas until he insists, when she postulates that the dream may not be a friendly warning, but the taunting of an evil and angry Angelique, teasing Barnabas with what she herself may have planned for him. "That is nonsense," he scoffs. "She died in my arms, declaring her love for me. She wept in the dream over what I was to see. It must be a warning! It must!" "Then do you think it means that if we don't destroy Roxanne, the entire family will fall under her curse?" Julia asks. Barnabas isn't too thrilled with this idea either, and diverts attention from it by trying to figure out why Quentin was not a vampire in the dream. "Perhaps it is not Roxanne, but Quentin who is the key to this," he says, but when Julia asks him how, he has no answer.

At the Blue Whale, Sebastian is drinking at the bar when Carolyn enters. They take a table, and he proposes that they take a trip to Vermont or New Hampshire to go skiing, something that surprises Carolyn since she points out that mid-term exams are coming up. Sebastian insists that she knows it all and studies too much and ought to get away for a while. Carolyn accuses him of trying to "chase her out of town," and Sebastian gets defensive and nervous.

Sebastian has seen Carolyn home, and asks her to think about the trip. She tells him she'll think about it, and maybe by the time mid-terms are over and she knows him better she'll feel better about it. Roger, who has been eavesdropping, says hello to them both before returning to the drawing room pleased with Carolyn's answer. Sebastian's not thrilled with this answer, but he's stuck with it. He looks worried as he leaves.

Episode 1250

Aired Friday April 9, 1971

Liz is having some coffee and reading a newspaper in the morning when Carolyn comes downstairs for breakfast. Liz comments how Carolyn has been in such a good mood lately, and Carolyn says she feels she's finally found some direction with her interest in the occult. Liz answers that it might be more her interest in Sebastian. "He reminds you a lot of Jeb, doesn't he?" asks Liz. Carolyn looks sad for a moment, but answers that while Sebastian may resemble Jeb, heÕs actually a very different person.

Sebastian is looking for Stokes around the college, but is surprised to meet up with Carolyn, who suggests they have lunch together. Sebastian says he needs to see Stokes, but a few bats of the eyes and a smile from Carolyn have him running off.

That evening, Sebastian returns to the college, but Stokes' office is dark and empty. As he is leaving, he runs into Professor Anderson who tells him Stokes has gone out of town for a few days. When Sebastian remarks that he had some questions for him, Anderson offers to help if he can. Anderson invites Sebastian into his office, and with the same strange smile we saw yesterday, closes the door behind them.

In the Collinwood drawing room, Barnabas is having some tea with Liz, while Liz talks about the change in Carolyn. Barnabas is happy to hear she is getting over the loss of Jeb, "while she is so young with so many things ahead of her." Barnabas pours himself another cup, while Liz warns "Try not to have too much tea, Barnabas, it may keep you up all night. You wouldn't want that!" Barnabas smiles and answers "No, I suppose I wouldn't."

Back at the old house, Barnabas is stirring in his sleep, and then the dream-sequence music and lighting effects begin as we fade to.... Episode 1249

Aired Thursday April 8, 1971

After the latter half of the ending scene of 1248 and the titles, Sebastian asks Barnabas how he intends to cure Roxanne. Barnabas does not know, though he alludes to medical advancements made by Julia and another Doctor, Eric Lang. Sebastian asks Barnabas "What if she doesn't want to be cured? What if she prefers this existence and fights for it?" Barnabas looks apprehensive and has no answer.

That night at the college. Quentin has sat in on Carolyn & Sebastian's class with Professor Anderson. Anderson is finishing a lecture on why people want to believe in the occult, and how it relates to a fear of death. As he begins to discuss the various scientific ways people try to conquer death versus the supernatural, the bell rings and he says he will continue with this discussion at the next session Tuesday evening. As people leave, Quentin approaches Daphne and says hello. She says hello, but quickly turns from him and begins to gather some papers. Quentin comments that she's not being very social and asks her how she enjoyed meeting his family. Looking away from him, she comments she enjoyed it very much, and for some reason, sensed that Collinwood was a real home. "What about your home, Daphne? Where are you from?" Quentin asks, but all Daphne will say is "I've never really had a home. I've always wandered from place to place, excuse me.." as she leaves the room. "She's a shy one" Anderson interrupts. "I suppose that makes her all the more mysterious and alluring."

Anderson asks Quentin if he was there to learn more about the class or simply try to talk to Daphne. Quentin admits heÕs curious as to the class since it's interested Carolyn so much, but then admits further that he finds Daphne more interesting. He tells Anderson he seems to know her from somewhere, but cannot place it. Anderson suggests Quentin may have met her "in his travels" since Daphne had told him she is a wanderer. "Where have you been in your life, Mr Collins? Maybe I can help you narrow it down." Quentin replies that he's been a lot of different places and has had his heart broken by a lot of different women, and he can't keep it all straight. Anderson laughs, and tells Quentin that losing track of such things is a sign of age. Quentin looks at Anderson curiously for a second, but then chuckles.

Back at the old house, Barnabas tells Sebastian that Professor Stokes may be of some help in finding out more about the possibilities of RoxanneÕs condition. Sebastian mentions Professor Anderson, but Barnabas says heÕd rather deal with Stokes because he knows him better and knows he can trust him. Sebastian agrees to talk to Stokes the next day.

Quentin catches up to Daphne outside the college and offers to see her home. "You're old fashioned, Mr. Collins," she says. "You can only see me as far as my car." "It's a beautiful night for a walk, don't you think? And please call me Quentin. I don't know if I'll ever get used to Mr. Collins. My older brother was Mr. Collins." "Was?" she asks, and Quentin turns reflective a moment and answers "He's passed away. A long time ago, it's okay." She says she's sorry, and he apologizes for bringing it up. "I only wanted you to think of me as a friend," he says. She smiles and says "Ok, Quentin. It's only fair since you've been calling me Daphne." He offers to walk her around the town before seeing her back to her car as a compromise, and with a smile, she accepts. As they pass the last window of the college, we see Anderson in the window, watching and smiling strangely.

Episode 1248

Aired Wednesday April 7, 1971

The family is gathering for dinner. Liz talks to Carolyn about Anderson, and is intrigued to meet him. Roger is more skeptical, convinced that the study of such phenomena is merely a "racket." Liz reminds him of the seances and other events of the recent past. Roger says he has tried to put them out of his mind, and that the only thing he currently believes is that he will have another brandy. Quentin tells him he disagrees with him on the occult, but agrees with him on the brandy.

Sebastian arrives. Carolyn is surprised to see him, and he tells her that he got a message from Barnabas and wanted to meet him there. Carolyn asks him if he's sure he's not jealous, which Sebastian denies, so Carolyn invites him to stay for dinner anyway. Barnabas and Julia are next to arrive. After a few hellos, Sebastian asks Barnabas why he wants to see him, and Barnabas takes Sebastian aside and tells him it's about Roxanne, and that he should accompany him back to the old house after dinner. Sebastian is interested.

Anderson arrives, but to Carolyn's disappointment (and a smile from Sebastian) he has brought a young woman with him, whom he introduces as Daphne Hopkins (Kate Jackson) his teaching assistant, who "had no other place to go tonight, please forgive me." Liz remarks how there's always more than enough food. Quentin gets one look at Daphne and is fixated. She says hello to him, and he asks her if they have ever met before. She says no, but he is doubtful. Barnabas turns to see her and gasps "Daphne!"

"Yes, Daphne Hopkins, Mr. Collins," she answers. Barnabas recovers and says hello, and then moves to Julia. "It's impossible!" he says to her. "It cannot be the same Daphne, but look at her!" Julia agrees that she is identical to Daphne Harridge, but reminds Barnabas that Daphne Harridge went to New York in 1840 and lived out her life there. Since the alteration of time, no one, not even Quentin, should recognize her. (As a note, a significant change in James Storm's hairstyle sort-of covered his resemblance to Gerard Stiles going unnoticed, in the grand tradition of Dirk Wilkins reminding no one of Peter Bradford or Charles Delaware Tate). Anderson tells Roger and Liz of his interest in the rich history of the Collins family and how many of its people were interested in the occult. "Too interested if you ask me," Roger says. Anderson approaches Quentin and says "You seem to disagree." Quentin answers that he believes there are things in the universe that no one will ever understand. "I agree," says Anderson, "though you must agree that much of what we don't fully understand centers on the notion of immortality." This comment sends a chill through Quentin and Barnabas, but then Liz announces dinner is ready.

At the old house, Barnabas shows Sebastian where Roxanne is chained. Sebastian is pleased she cannot get out. Barnabas says that as long as the silver cross is inside the coffin, she cannot move. Sebastian asks if she is in any pain, and Barnabas looks thoughtful a moment and says "No, she is not in pain. Her mind should be active enough so that she can put herself into a sleep-like trance. Time will stand still for her as it passes for everything else. It will remain so unless that coffin is opened." "You seem to know an awful lot about this," Sebastian comments. Barnabas sighs and simply answers "Yes, I do." Sebastian asks Barnabas what he wants, and Barnabas tells him "I need to know everything about Roxanne. You were once her servant. I need to know why she is the way she is. How it happened. " Sebastian asks why, and Barnabas answers "Because I intend to cure her."

Episode 1247

Aired: Tuesday April 6, 1971

Barnabas is walking through Eagle Hill. He passes Josette's, then Jeremiah's headstones and pauses. "Everyone I once loved..." he says as he moves on. He stops outside the mausoleum and we hear him think "I cannot go in... I must break from the past. I must stop doing this to myself, I must!" He turns and moves quickly, but then stops cold in his tracks at the headstone which reads "Here lies Valery Collins, Born ? Died 1840." Barnabas drops to one knee, drops his cane, and brushes aside some branches covering the stone. "Angelique... you gave me back my life and I wanted to give you my heart in return, but it was not to be... I wish I had brought you something today, some flowers perhaps, to brighten this place of sorrows. Perhaps tomorrow, my love. I will find the strength to face this place again, I promise you."

Barnabas gets up and walks away, until he realizes he forgot his cane. As he turns to take it off the ground, he sees there is a fresh bouquet of red roses on Valery/Angelique's grave.

After the titles, Barnabas returns to the old house, carrying a single red rose. Julia sees him carrying it and smiles, "Barnabas, you shouldn't have..." He looks confused a moment, then tells Julia the flower was a gift to him. Julia notices he is in a much better mood than when he left earlier, then gets the courage to ask him who gave him the rose. "I visited Angelique's grave," he says to Julia's concern. "I looked away for a moment, and then back again, and there they were, a bouquet of beautiful red roses." "Who left them?" asks Julia. "I think she did," answers Barnabas, "for me." Julia is apprehensive.

At the Blue Whale, the dinner crowd is gathering. Carolyn enters with Sebastian Shaw. She is carrying some books and a notebook. They sit at a table, and she comments on how interesting her class on occult science has been and thanks Sebastian for telling her about it. Sebastian talks about how studying astrology led him into interest into other phenomena. Carolyn asks Sebastian if he believes that someone's horoscope determines their life, or if they have choice. Sebastian says he's not sure, but before he can go on, Professor Stokes enters, along with another man.

Carolyn sees them, and Stokes goes to Carolyn's table to say hello. He starts to introduce his companion, Professor Phillip Anderson (James Storm), but Carolyn comments that she and Sebastian had just come from Anderson's class. Stokes asks Carolyn if her interest in the occult has to do with her family. Anderson comments about the rich family history of the Collinses, and Carolyn says that it seems everyone is always interested in the family history. She invites Stokes and Anderson to join her and Sebastian.

Back at the old house, Barnabas is still smitten with the rose, but Julia is nervous. She asks Barnabas if he can be sure that it's a good thing if Angelique has returned "in some way." Barnabas answers that "Angelique died as a woman, not a witch, and a woman in love." He sees no danger, and muses on the possibility of Angelique returning to him somehow, in all her beauty. "Besides," he adds "It wasn't a black rose for mourning. It was a red rose, symbolizing love." Julia comments that while roses are beautiful and delicate, they also have thorns.

Back at the Blue Whale, the group is finishing dinner. Carolyn tells Anderson how amazed she is at his knowledge of the occult. Stokes comments how happy he is to finally have another person at the college assume some of his workload in the area after Anderson arrived only a few months ago. Anderson asks if Carolyn will be writing about her family for the class, and she says they are too mundane to write about. "That's certainly contrary to the legends," says Anderson, and Carolyn answers "Well, perhaps you would like to meet us all and judge for yourself? Would you like to come to Collinwood tomorrow for dinner?" Anderson smiles, then takes her hand and kisses it. "I graciously accept your invitation, my dear" Sebastian looks on this with a frown.

Episode 1246

Aired: Monday April 5, 1971

Ben Stokes/Thayer David narrates:

Collinwood, in the strange world of parallel time, 1841. Having vanquished the evil spirit of Brutus, the family was shocked to find that Melanie had suffered an attack by a strange animal, which some thought to be the marks of a vampire.

As we see the Old House, the narration continues, from the ending of episode 1245:

"There was no vampire loose on the great estate. For the first time at Collinwood, the marks on the neck were indeed those of an animal. Melanie soon recovered and went to live in Boston with her beloved Kendrick. There they prospered and had three children. Bramwell and Catherine were soon married, and at Flora's insistence, stayed on at Collinwood, where Bramwell assumed control of the Collins business interests. Their love became a living legend. And for as long as they lived, the Dark Shadows at Collinwood were but a memory of the distant past."

We are in the Old House living room. Professor T. Eliot Stokes has finished reading from a book as Barnabas sits and listens.

Stokes continues. "A remarkable book, Barnabas. The history of a parallel time Collins family, written by William Loomis. I felt as if I was transported to another world when I read it" Barnabas answers "And here we are, back again in our own Collinwood of 1971, Professor."

After the opening titles, Barnabas tells Stokes he was glad he remembered he had brought the Loomis books on the history of the Collins family back with him from parallel time, since after observing Bramwell and Catherine in the East Wing room in 1840, he became fascinated with them. Stokes asks Barnabas if the lineage in parallel time matches, and if Barnabas' namesake ancestor had also had a son, Bramwell. Barnabas fumbles with words a bit and says yes, only his life in England was rather dull compared to what Stokes had just read about. Stokes seems to believe it, but Barnabas doesn't seem to be sure.

Julia enters the room, and makes a remark about the mysteries of time to divert Stokes.

"It is truly amazing what can be produced by altering the currents of time," Stokes continues. "Our journey to 1840 not only saved the present day Collins family, but produced a New York branch of the family as well." Barnabas agrees, noting that Quentin & Daphne had more children to join Tad after moving to New York and living in property once owned by Quentin's Aunt Millicent. Barnabas & Julia had learned of them, somewhat, by attending Roger's speech to the historical society upon their return from 1840. Roger and Liz are planning a family reunion of sorts.

Stokes departs, after inviting Julia to lunch at the university. Barnabas opens the secret room behind the bookcase, and we see Roxanne's coffin is still there, chained. "Some things remain unchanged." he says sadly. "It makes no sense, Julia - she was destroyed back in 1840." Julia thinks a moment and answers "It actually does make sense, Barnabas. One of the changes we made in 1840 made that Roxanne Drew a vampire. Originally, it could not have happened since you were chained in the mausoleum." "How do you explain this, then?" asks Barnabas as he closes the secret room. "Perhaps it was just her fate to become what she is," says Julia. "Fate!" answers Barnabas. "I refuse to believe in fate after all I've seen. I must feel in control of my destiny." Barnabas is studying Sam Evans' portrait of him over the fireplace, deep in thought. "Stokes is right," says Barnabas. "Altering the currents of time produce amazing results. In that other time, Josette and I produced a son. Fiery, passionate, determined... I admired him, I even felt a father's pride when I saw him fight for the woman he loved. Something I can never have..."

"It's not too late, Barnabas. Now that you are human again." says Julia. Barnabas has moved to stand by the window in a sunbeam. Barnabas looks off into the distance. "Josette, Vicky, Roxanne, and now Angelique... all gone, forever," he mopes. Julia moves to him. "You have been reborn, in a way. You can start fresh," she says as she takes his hand. "You are human again, you can live and love as any other man."

Barnabas nervously pulls away from her. "I.. need to be alone. I think I'll take a walk. I have a lot of sunny walks to catch up on." As he gets his cape and cane, he seems to notice Julia is a bit hurt. "Will you be okay alone?" he asks her, and she, facing away from him meekly answers "I'll be okay... I'll go up to Collinwood." He leaves.

At Collinwood, Quentin is (surprise!) having a drink in the study when David walks in carrying a large book. Quentin asks him about it. He tells Quentin it's one of Carolyn's, who has been borrowing every book on the occult she can find in the Collinsport library. Curious, Quentin takes the book and starts to peruse it, nodding in familiarity. David, excited, tells Quentin how Carolyn is studying about the occult at the college, about souls, ghosts, possession, and other "neat stuff." "With Stokes?" asks Quentin. "No, some other guy. She's taking it with that astrologer Sebastian. I think she likes him." answers David. Quentin chuckles and tells David that sometimes such things are more fun and a lot safer to read about than to actually deal with. He leads David towards a partially played chess game and asks him if he wants more practice, since it will help him to learn how to think. "How smart do you have to be to outsmart ghosts and witches? Don't they have special powers?" David asks. Quentin takes another drink before answering "It's like chess, David. You have to think many moves ahead."

Barnabas' walk has taken him to the outside of Eagle Hill cemetery. He stops a moment, and we hear him thinking as he looks it over. "Almost everyone I have known is buried in here, almost everyone I have loved. What have I got to show for it except my own existence? How can I live a normal life as Julia insists with the burden of my memories? Yet, something draws me here..." He walks in.

Back at Collinwood, Julia has arrived as David and Quentin are playing the chess game. They greet each other, and Julia sees the book on the occult. She asks David if it is his, and he tells her it belongs to Carolyn, since his father would most likely disapprove. Quentin assures him he'll keep David's secret from Roger if David can beat him. Happy, David checkmates Quentin, grabs the book, and runs upstairs. "Remind me not to teach him poker," says Quentin. Julia asks Quentin if he knows why Carolyn is suddenly interested in the occult, and all Quentin can answer is that she's really more interested in Sebastian Shaw, or else he figures it must run in the family.

Barnabas is walking through Eagle Hill. He passes Josette's, then Jeremiah's headstones and pauses. "Everyone I once loved..." he says as he moves on. He stops outside the mausoleum and we hear him think "I cannot go in... I must break from the past. I must stop doing this to myself, I must!" Introduction

Sadly, one of my favorite stories has been taken down. Charles Delaware Troll wrote a terrific Dark Shadows Fan Fiction story and posted it up on a Hometown AOL site. Luckily, I read and saved the story. This story will be reposted here for your enjoyment.

Introduction:

I tried my best to accurately reproduce the style & structure of episodes, including the intercutting between scenes, the rotation of cast members and plot strands from day to day, Friday cliffhangers, dialogue in the style of the given characters, etc. Just imagine the music and I hope it will feel like the real thing, dated and all. The only difference, I guess, is the pacing of the plot, which moves a little bit faster than the 1795 flashback (which was already fast by DS standards).

If you are familiar with Sam Hall's TV Guide article musing on the future of the DS characters, you may recognize some elements in my story. But honestly, there are some elements of Hall's article that, I think, would NEVER have been done if the show had stayed on the air. I don't think they would have killed off Roger, nor do I think that any of the globetrotting Hall describes would have taken place. Another major difference (mistake, I feel) is that Hall has Barnabas still a vampire upon his return from 1840, when we know he came back human, his curse lifted. Certainly the fans, myself included, find evil Barnabas battling his inner demons much more fun, so a human Barnabas presents many plot opportunities to bring back his darker side.

What I've tried to do in my version is preserve the actual day-to-day feel of the show, as well as present a very feasable example of what might actually have been done storywise if the show had not been cancelled and Frid decided to play Barnabas again. I've read a lot of fan material on the kinds of plots fans would have wanted to see happen next, and assuming that similar letters would have found their way to Curtis & Co. back in '71, I'll be following many of those ideas rather than the Hall article.

So, sit back. Pour yourself some tea, or perhaps a claret cup. Take a journey through what might have been another year's worth of the show! There's even a new ending to the series that I hope satisfies better than the ending of the 1841PT story, or even the "sudden" ending of the regular story before they switched to 1841PT. Enjoy!
