Episode 1300

Aired: Friday June 18, 1971

After a replay of Thursday's close and the titles, Barnabas tries to communicate with Angelique's ghost. "Yes... I can hear you," he says. "I can hear you in my thoughts." She moves closer to him and waves her hand over his head. "To the point of return... why do you keep saying that? What does it mean?" Angelique starts to move closer, but then as Julia comes downstairs, the ghost vanishes. "No! Don't go! Come back, Angelique! Come back!" Barnabas yells. Julia asks him what's been happening, and he tells her that Angelique's ghost appeared to him again, and that she kept telling him how he should "go back to the point of return. Julia, what could it mean?" Julia says she doesn't know, and asks Barnabas how he feels otherwise. He says he is okay now, and that she can disconnect the tubes from him. "This transfusion will keep the craving from me temporarily, but I don't know another answer, Julia." he says. Julia tells him that she has "prepared a new, more powerful injection. Perhaps it will be enough to break Petofi's curse." Barnabas is skeptical, reminding Julia of what happened when they last tried the injection on Quentin. "I think Angelique is trying to tell me the answer, Julia. If I can only figure out what she means by the point of return." Julia tells him that until he can figure that out, he must be willing to try anything.

In the living room, Julia is preparing the new injection while trying to convince Barnabas to undergo a new experiment. Barnabas is still obsessing over what Angelique was trying to tell him. "What could the point of return mean?" Julia says that she agrees it can't be Cassandra's dream since this Angelique never had a chance to become Cassandra. "Yes," Barnabas agrees. "In a way, that whole sorry episode may well be forgotten forever." Julia thinks out loud how amazed she was when Angelique changed for the good in 1840. "I was caught by surprise as well, " Barnabas adds. "Perhaps it was always the power she got from Judah Zachary and not her own jealousies that led her to cause such evil. Once she was able to fight them and they were removed, she gained her soul back. I can appreciate what she may have gone through, now more than ever." Julia remarks that the injection may change that. Barnabas continues though "Perhaps the point of return is when I made that first mistake back in Martinique. Perhaps if I had allowed myself to love her then, she could have fought off that power before doing any of the damage that happened." Julia says that "You never know how things can change from changing one element in the past." Barnabas thinks he has found the answer though, adding "That must be it Julia! The point of return! If I can get back there, relive those nights in Martinique and declare my love for her in spite of my father's wishes, perhaps I can avoid the curse that has followed me through history! I must use my powers to will myself back to 1795!" Julia looks at him and says "Barnabas, no! You mustn't!" He looks at her wondering why.

Julia continues, explaining that if Barnabas managed to go back to 1795 like he has said, he may be happy with Angelique, but "chances are the present day Collins family will cease to exist because the paths of others will be altered." Barnabas thinks a moment, muttering "Daniel... Jeremiah....Sarah...all of them..." Barnabas gets melancholy, lamenting how "so many of those I loved in the past must suffer and die so that those I love now can live. Why?" Julia tries to calm him, and readies him for the injection. He looks at Julia with trust as he rolls up his sleeve. Julia says "We should know soon if this has any effect. Tell me how you feel after I give you this shot." She gives him the shot, and he waits a moment. She asks him how he feels, and he says he feels nothing, "no difference." Julia says that "this might be a good sign anyway, considering what happened the last time..." but before she can finish, Barnabas is growing more agitated, and his eyes are wide open. "The craving!" he yells. "It's growing stronger than ever! Julia! Stop it! Stop it, please!" Julia, panicked, says "I don't know how! Oh Barnabas! No! The injection! It's making it worse!" Barnabas' eyes are wide open as he breathes heavily and starts to bare his fangs....

"I must have blood...." Barnabas says, eyeing Julia. She backs away, begging Barnabas to control himself. "I MUST!" he yells, knocking some furniture out of the way. "There's no other way, Julia..." he says. "I must have blood or will myself to the past..." Julia yells at him "No, Barnabas! You might destroy everyone here if you do that!" Barnabas angrily says "I don't care! I must stop this craving! I must find my own happiness!" Julia cowers as Barnabas approaches her adding "...starting with your blood, Julia...." Julia cries "No, Barnabas, don't..." As Barnabas gets closer, a glowing light appears between him and Julia. It gets brighter, blocking his way. Angelique appears in the light, and Julia sees her. She looks at Barnabas and puts her hand up to stop him from moving towards Julia. He yells "I must have blood! No.... help me! Help me Angelique! The point of return! Take me to the point of return!" Julia yells "No, Barnabas, don't do it!" But Angelique's ghost smiles and moves towards Barnabas with her arms stretched out. Barnabas starts to calm down as the ghost embraces him, saying simply "The point of return....the point of return..." until he and Angelique's ghost both vanish together! Julia sees this and yells "Barnabas! Barnabas!"

Episode 1299

Aired: Thursday June 17, 1971

Barnabas is pacing in the living room of the old house impatiently, every once in a while stopping to look out the window at the moon. He thinks to himself "Another endless night. I cannot imprison myself in this house tonight. I must go out, but I cannot! How do I know I won't hurt someone, or even....kill someone?" He paces some more, but then winds up at the coat rack, and begins to put on his cape. "I must go out, at least for a walk, for some fresh air." As he is about to leave, the door opens and it's Willie. He says hello, and that Liz gave the okay to hire him full time as the Collins estate groundskeeper. Barnabas quickly says a congratulations and moves by him and out the door. Willie calls to him "Barnabas! Hey Barnabas! Where are ya goin?"

After the titles, Willie is still calling to Barnabas to no avail, and then goes back inside as Julia comes down the stairs. She asks him what the yelling is all about, and Willie, panicked, tells her that Barnabas has gone out. "And you know what that means! Soon those dogs'll be howling, and a lotta bad stuff is gonna happen!" Julia tells Willie to calm down, and that they must go after Barnabas. Willie is hesitant at this, reminding Julia how "you don't know how angry he can get when you try to stop him! I'm not going after him alone!" Julia tells Willie that they can get help this time. "Quentin knows about Barnabas. And Barnabas trusts Quentin. We must go to Collinwood and get him." Julia assists Willie out the door. We cut to the docks area of Collinsport, where some people are milling about. A young couple walks by and as we follow them, we see Barnabas, standing off to the side with dark brooding eyes watching them, and we hear him thinking "I shouldn't be here, this was a mistake. Too many people, too many beating hearts....I must control myself....I must!"

A lone woman stands on the pier looking out at the ocean. Barnabas comes up besides her and apologizes for startling her. She looks him over and says it's okay. "A lovely woman such as yourself should not be out here alone," Barnabas says. She smiles and says she just had an argument with her boyfriend. "Oh, I'm so sorry, " Barnabas continues. "I hope I am not intruding." She says he isn't, and that "After all, if had good manners like you, maybe we wouldn't have argued." Barnabas thanks her, and then remarks on how "I never tire of the reflection of the stars on the ocean waves. That is why I enjoy coming out here. It reminds me of a thousand glistening candles flickering in the evening wind." She looks at him and says "You are very old fashioned." He moves in closer with simply a "Yes" as he stares at her with dark vampire eyes. "And...very romantic" she adds as he leans in even closer and more menacing with a "Yes..." as he embraces her and opens his mouth baring long fangs......

Barnabas is just about to bite into the woman's neck when he hears Quentin shout "Barnabas! Barnabas!" He stops himself and moves away from the woman, and Quentin approaches. "Barnabas! There you are! I'm so glad I found you!" The woman asks Barnabas who his "cute friend is," and Quentin says "Good evening, Miss. Barnabas, your wife and I are waiting inside the Blue Whale for you." "Wife?" Barnabas asks. "Wife?" says the woman angrily. "You men are all the same." The woman storms off and Barnabas looks away from Quentin and says "I suppose I should thank you." Quentin adds "Not as much as she should." Barnabas tells Quentin he couldn't help himself, the craving only "grows stronger with each passing night." Quentin says he understands, but that Julia wanted "me to find you since she thinks she might have a way to help you." Barnabas asks what, and Quentin tells him how Julia had gone into town that day and set up equipment in the old house to give Barnabas a transfusion. Barnabas is interested, but then remarks on how "It may help for a while, but it won't be a cure." Quentin tells him that it's better than nothing, and Barnabas agrees to go back to the old house.

At the old house, Barnabas is on an examination table in the basement as Julia is giving him a transfusion. She asks him if it is helping, and he tells her that "the craving is gone, at least for now." She says she's glad, and he takes her hand and says "I'm glad too." Julia gets a shyness attack and says she needs something upstairs, and tells Barnabas to lie still as she leaves. After a moment, there is a glowing white light in the room that Barnabas sees. As he stares at it, Angelique appears. Barnabas smiles at her and says "Angelique! You've come to me again." The ghost smiles at him.

Episode 1298

Aired: Wednesday June 16, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's close and the titles, Julia is trying to revive Liz as Barnabas decides it would be best if he left and Julia "convince Liz the best way she knows how that Liz was hallucinating." Julia understands and gets the medallion out of her purse as Liz starts to awaken. Julia tries to calm her and get her to concentrate on the medallion, but Liz is too agitated, repeating how "he had no reflection! How is that possible?" Julia tells her that "Of course Barnabas has a reflection, the light was playing tricks on your eyes." Liz looks at Julia confused and says "Barnabas? Has Barnabas been here?" Now Julia is confused and says "You haven't seen Barnabas?" Liz says "No. I thought I saw Professor Anderson.... Anderson! Anderson had no reflection Julia, how is that possible?" Julia breathes a sigh of relief, but then tries to convince Liz that she must have been hallucinating because of the lack of sleep. Julia offers her a sedative, and then says that once she is rested, they can begin the hypnoses sessions again. Liz lays down, and Julia looks her over.

At the old house, Barnabas is pacing nervously as Julia enters and tells him that Liz was suffering from traumatic flashes of memory and thought she didn't see Anderson in the window instead of not seeing Barnabas. Barnabas is relieved, but remarks how he has to remember to be more careful in his present condition. Julia tells Barnabas how she will try to erase the portions of Liz' memory that are giving her the nightmares, but she also wonders what Liz meant by her remarks on how the passing of time didn't affect her. Barnabas thinks it just may be that she's overtired, but Julia wonders if Petofi had left Liz with some sort of aftereffect that altered her mind and perceptions somehow. Barnabas wonders if anyone else in the family could still be under Petofi's "lingering evil" somehow, and Julia has no answer.

Julia returns to Collinwood to see Liz, who is going over some papers at the desk in the drawing room. When Julia asks Liz if she would like to begin the session, Liz asks her what she is talking about. Julia reminds her that she wanted to undergo hypnosis in order to retrieve lost memories, and Liz suddenly insists that she has no lost memories. Julia asks her if that means she remembers everything that happened with Professor Anderson, and Liz asks what she means. Julia asks "You must remember what happened tonight, when you thought you saw Anderson in the window," but Liz answers "I don't remember that happening. And wasn't Barnabas supposed to come by with you tonight, to ask about Willie Loomis returning?" Julia, confused, answers yes, but then asks Liz how she knew about Willie returning since Barnabas had never mentioned it to her. Liz answers "He must have, how would I know otherwise?" Julia has no answer as Carolyn enters the room and Liz tells her "Oh, Carolyn! I should tell you that a relative from New York has wired us that he is on his way here to stay with us a while." Carolyn asks Liz "Which distant New York relative is it?" "I don't know," Liz answers strangely. "Your Uncle Roger met him first and thought he resembled our father." Carolyn, confused, says "Mother, what do you mean? How could Uncle Roger meet him if he cabled us from New York? Roger hasn't been away in weeks." Liz thinks a moment and answers "I don't know. I just know that's what happens." Julia wonders what's going on with Liz.

Willie arrives at Collinwood looking for Julia, but Liz sees him and invites him in. She asks him how he's been, and he remarks on how he's been working at Windcliff and that he's felt "important up there." Liz tells him she thinks he come a long way, and how a lot of that progress had to do with Barnabas. Willie shyly agrees, and Liz then says that she thinks "it's a wonderful idea for you to be the groundskeeper of the entire estate. I'm sure you've talked over the financials with Barnabas, but I want you to know that it's perfectly all right with me." Surprised, Willie thanks Liz and says he'll "try it out" to see how it goes. Liz says goodnight, and Willie remarks to Julia and Carolyn "that was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Boy, that Mrs. Stoddard is a nice lady, you know?" Willie notices Julia deep in thought and asks her what's wrong, and Julia says "It may be nothing...." Carolyn asks Julia if she thinks her "mother is acting very strange lately." Julia answers that "I'm not sure, but it seems as if your mother is growing disconnected from time somehow." Carolyn wonders what this means.

Episode 1297

Aired: Tuesday June 15, 1971

Grayson Hall's voiceover: "Dusk has come to Collinwood, once again becoming the liberating force for one who lies cursed deep in the basement of the old house on the Collins estate. For Barnabas Collins, the return to an existence only by night was a sacrifice to save the lives of the Collins family, but his success can be little solace when compared to the private hell he must now suffer, a hell with seemingly no escape...."

Barnabas rises and leaves the basement, locking the metal door behind him somberly. When he comes into the living room, he sees Julia standing with Willie Loomis, who meekly says hello to him. "Willie!" Barnabas answers. "You are back."

After the titles, Willie tells Barnabas how Julia called him at his job as groundskeeper at Windcliff because "she told me you needed me again, Barnabas." "Yes, Willie," Barnabas says. "It seems that way." "Barnabas, how did this happen? I mean, when you and Dr. Hoffman and Professor Stokes came back from the past last time, you were all right, you were all better again! What happened?" "Does that matter?" Barnabas answers, but Julia pipes in "Willie, it's a long story, but an enemy of Quentin's did this to Barnabas when Barnabas managed to save Quentin from him." Willie thinks about this a moment, and then says "Is that true? You got this way this time by saving someone else?" Barnabas says yes and sits down. "Well, then, Barnabas! Maybe things'll be different this time, you know? I mean, you're trying to help people now, that might not change! Maybe this time you won't be like you were before!" "Perhaps, " Barnabas says, "but I don't know what this curse will do to me, Willie. I cannot make any promises about my behavior." Suddenly, the dogs start howling and Willie gets nervous. "Oh, those dogs! I hate those dogs howling!" he says. "I know, " Barnabas says. "I'd still like you to come back here and work for me." Willie says that he likes the job Julia got him at Windcliff because it gives him a lot more responsibility, and that "they respect me up there, Barnabas! Yeah, me!" Julia tells Willie that Barnabas needs him more than ever now, and Willie says that he understands, but that "I gotta have my own life you know. I can't keep coming back here every time something weird starts happenin', I just can't!"

Barnabas offers to match the pay that Willie got at Windcliff and reminds him how everyone will be happy to see him around again, like Carolyn and Liz and David. "Maybe," Willie answers. "But up at Windcliff, I made a lot of friends. And I got to see Maggie a lot too, you know? She's doing pretty well up there, getting better all the time." Julia reminds Willie that getting too close to Maggie may not be a good idea, considering "all that's happened." Willie looks at both Barnabas and Julia thinking over that subtle hint, and asks Barnabas if he could arrange it so he wasn't only working for Barnabas, but for the Collins family as a whole. "If I can be groundskeeper at Windcliff, why not at all of Collinwood, right?" Barnabas reminds Willie that it's not up to him, but up to Liz. After more pleading from Willie, Barnabas promises to ask her.

Later, Barnabas and Julia are preparing to go up to Collinwood when Julia has doubts about Liz hiring Willie. "We must ask her," Barnabas says. "Someone has to be here during the day, and it would be impossible to expect you to do that." Julia says she would be willing to, but Barnabas reminds her of her obligation to Windcliff, and that she cannot "simply push her entire life aside to protect me." Julia thinks a moment about how often she's done that and can only say "I...don't mind." "Nonsense," Barnabas tells her. "I am sure I can convince Elizabeth to take on Willie, especially after she hears how well he has done in his position at Windcliff." Julia tells Barnabas that Liz has not been herself lately, and Barnabas asks why. Julia tells him that her memories of Anderson and what he did to her are "not quite gone." Barnabas asks her what she is doing about it, and Julia tells him that she has been hypnotizing Liz to forget. "Good," Barnabas says. "We can't afford anything that might lead to unwanted questions."

At Collinwood, Liz is watching the large clock strike 9 when there is a knock on the door. Liz ignores the knocking and continues to watch the clock. Barnabas and Julia enter and see her, and she is startled when they call to her. She apologizes for not "being herself" and they all go into the drawing room. Barnabas begins to ask her about hiring a new groundskeeper without mentioning Willie by name, but Liz seems very distant. She starts to babble about the "passing of time" and how she feels "unconnected to it all." Barnabas tries to change the subject to how he thinks there ought to be a single groundskeeper for both Collinwood and the old house, but then Liz stands and walks to the window, saying "I was standing here, looking at the window, at the reflections...." She turns the window as Barnabas approaches her, and she sees that he shows no reflection. "Not there! He's not there!" She grabs her neck, screams, and faints. Barnabas looks at Julia shocked, fearing his secret has been discovered.

Episode 1296

Aired: Monday June 14, 1971

At Collinwood, Liz tosses and turns in her sleep, and begins to dream. In her dream, she is wandering in the foyer of Collinwood with the requisite dream fog. She hears the grandfather clock chiming, but when she looks at it, it is running backwards. As she watches this confused, she glances down to the swinging pendulum....which morphs into Julia's medallion swinging before her eyes as she hears Julia's voice say "blocks of time will no longer be connected to your consciousness.....no longer connected.....no longer connected...." She backs away from the clock into the drawing room, and when she turns around, she sees herself standing by the window, with two bleeding wounds running from the neck.... and with a scream wakes up terrified.

After the titles, Quentin is sitting in the drawing room having some coffee and reading a newspaper when there is a knock at the door. It is Stokes, arriving to tell Quentin that he has done some research on Petofi and his powers. As he begins to explain, Liz enters, still shaken from her dream and asks for some coffee. Quentin asks her if she is all right, and she says she could hardly sleep because of nightmares that she can't remember, only that "I have a sense that I've lost part of my life. I can't remember things that happened to me and I think they are turning up in my dreams in strange and twisted ways!" Stokes is interested in her problem, but Liz says that Julia has been attempting to retrieve some memories through hypnosis. "But," she adds "I feel as if I am losing my ability to keep track of time." Stokes asks her what she means by that as opposed to merely forgetting some things, and Liz answers "I'm not sure, but I feel as if I can no longer sense the passing of time as the day goes on." Quentin and Stokes look at each other.

Stokes tells Quentin that the "sorcery of Petofi has a long and interesting history" but Quentin only wants to know if Stokes found out anything about Daphne. Stokes isn't sure Quentin would want to hear what he thinks, even though "it's only a theory." Quentin wants to know, and Stokes tells him that he found many instances where, according to the accounts, Petofi seemed to have some limited command of the forces of life and death, and was able to manipulate them for his own purposes. "What does that mean?" Quentin asks. "For one thing," Stokes answers, "it would certainly have given Petofi the secret of immortality. One can assume that he was able to make others immortal as well...." This comment makes Quentin nervous, and he offers Stokes some coffee. Stokes continues that Daphne's only memories brought up through the same sort of hypnosis Liz is undergoing were that of a Daphne Harridge Collins who lived in the 19th century. "This can mean many things," he goes on. "Normally, I might theorize that we were dealing with a possible case for reincarnation." Quentin laughs a little and asks Stokes if he, as a man of science, believes in reincarnation. Stokes says "Yes, I do. And for a reason you may very well be interested in yourself." "What do you mean?" Quentin asks. "Are you telling me that Daphne is a reincarnation of the Daphne who married my namesake ancestor?" Stokes puts down his coffee and answers "No, Mr. Collins, I do not believe that Daphne is the reincarnated soul here. I think you are." Quentin is surprised to hear this.

Quentin asks Stokes what he's talking about, and Stokes answers that "if we weren't dealing with Petofi, I might not think this, but put it all together. If Petofi's plan was targeted at you and he chose to use Daphne as a way to lower your guard, it would make sense if you were indeed the reincarnation of your namesake ancestor who once loved Daphne." "But not this Daphne, Professor!" Quentin answers. "You're not making sense!" "Let me finish," Stokes interrupts. "Another power Petofi had was to establish a connection with the souls of the dead and re-embody them through some kind of spell." Quentin begins to think about this. "I found ample evidence that he had done this in the 19th century with someone named Garth Blackwood. I believe he has done this again." Quentin looks at Stokes and says "You mean that Daphne and the Daphne of the 19th century are...." "Are one in the same," Stokes says. "I believe Petofi had re-embodied her spirit knowing it would respond to your reincarnated one." Quentin tries to take this all in.

Quentin is looking out the window when Daphne comes in from outside. They greet each other and he asks her to sit down. "Stokes was here earlier," he tells her. She wants to know if Stokes found anything out about her background. Quentin hesitates a bit, and tells her "No, not yet. But I'm sure he'll find out something very soon." Daphne is disappointed and frustrated, but Quentin tells her that everything will be all right, and with a hug that "I won't let anything hurt you, ever."

Dark Shadows: Resurrection: Afterword 1

First of all, thank you for reading my story and taking the time to follow it as it evolves from week to week. If you're reading this, I'll assume you've read the first story arc (Episodes 1246-1292, roughly) and are interested in where it will be heading next. Stay tuned!

I always liked Petofi as a villain from the 1897 storyline, and thought the original series didn't quite know what to do with 1897 Quentin once they got him to 1970. Thayer David played the part wonderfully, but unless kindly Professor Stokes suddenly was possessed by Petofi's spirit somehow (Hmmm...there's an idea....), there had to be some other way of bringing him back to torment Quentin, Barnabas, and anyone else who got in his way. Since I also liked James Storm as a "Quentin enemy" and figured he'd be put in some other role if the show had remained on the air, it seemed a natural. The other issues I was concerned with were coming up with a way of segueing from the 1841PT story back to the "regular" story in a way that made sense, as well as taking care of that nasty time-paradox with vampire Roxanne. (After all, how could she be a vampire in 1970 if Julia wasn't originally there in 1840 to free Barnabas who bites her, etc etc etc.)

For those of you wondering where other beloved (and maybe hated!) characters are ("Hey! Where's Willie???"), just sit tight. A lot of familiar faces will be turning up as you continue, and maybe some new faces as well (after all, who can some of those actors and actresses who popped up in 1840 or 1841PT turn out to be in 1971?) The first story arc was a shorter, more centralized one in terms of plot and action; the second arc, beginning with the link below, will be more like the 1897 plot or the 1968 storyline, with several plotlines running concurrently, eventually intertwining at various intervals. I'm hoping you'll enjoy it, since I have an idea on how to segue it into a pretty neat third one down the road... we shall see!

Oh, and Willie? He's off somewhere getting a beating, probably missing the "special" way Barnabas does it. ;-)

Thanks for websurfing up my side of the street!

Episode 1295

Aired: Friday June 11, 1971

After a replay of Thursday's close and the titles, Julia gets Liz to retrieve some memories of Anderson, including getting bitten by the window. Julia insists that Liz is to forget these things as if they had never happened, "as if those spaces of time containing those memories are no longer connected to your consciousness." Liz nods. "I will count to three, and when you awaken, the connection between your consciousness and those blocks of time will be gone forever." Julia counts three, and Liz awakens. Julia waits a moment, and then Liz says "Oh, Julia! I didn't see you come in. I've been getting so forgetful lately, it seems, I'm sorry." "That's all right," Julia says with a smile. "How have you been?" "Just fine, Julia, just fine." Julia smiles.

Quentin and Barnabas enter the old house. Barnabas is still trying to figure out what Angelique was trying to tell him, but Quentin has no idea what it could mean. "Julia said you were feeling rather melancholy, Barnabas. I can't help but feel responsible for what happened to you. I dragged you into my affairs and those who had vendettas against me." Barnabas tells Quentin that it was his "own choice" to get involved. Quentin tells Barnabas "I owe you my life. The only way I could make it up to you is to help you fight this thing. Even in the short time I experienced it in Anderson's body, I learned a lot about the condition." Barnabas tells Quentin he is happy to have such a "valiant ally," but also reminds him how there seems to be no answer as to his "condition." Quentin says "Perhaps Julia is out of ideas, but maybe Stokes could be of some help." Barnabas says "No, no. It may raise too many questions about the past if we get Stokes involved." Quentin says "I think we can trust Stokes." "Perhaps, " Barnabas says. "or perhaps I should try to adjust while I decide what to do."

Julia arrives at the old house and finds Barnabas reading. "This was always my favorite book of poems, " he tells Julia. Hearing this, Julia tells him desperately that she can't destroy him at dawn, and that he'll "have to get someone else to do it." Barnabas tells her that he has changed his mind "for the time being," and will fight his condition "with the help of my friends, as always." Julia is happy to hear this, and asks Barnabas if talking with Quentin had changed his mind. "A little," Barnabas says, "but it was more what happened at Eagle Hill." Julia asks what, and Barnabas tells her that "Angelique appeared to me. She was trying to tell me something, about going back to the point of return. I don't know what it means, but for some reason, when her thoughts entered my mind, I felt a sense of peace." Julia is skeptical, and reminds Barnabas that he had mentioned the similar line from Cassandra's dream curse, and perhaps "Angelique's spirit is merely taunting him." Barnabas insists this is not true, since it is the spirit of the human Angelique who he had "reconciled" with in 1840. Julia says (ironically) "I hope you're right..." Barnabas says "I'm sure I am. I must find out what she meant by it, though. She is trying to tell me something, and the timing cannot be a mere coincidence. Julia, I believe she is trying to help me!" Julia is intrigued.

Episode 1294

Aired: Thursday June 10, 1971

Julia is pacing in the mausoleum waiting for dusk. After the stock shot of the sunset, the secret door begins to open and Barnabas comes out. "Barnabas, how do you feel?" she asks. "How do you think I feel, Julia?" he says. "I can feel the craving building inside me, even now." Julia tells him that perhaps she can begin his injections again, but he lets out a long sigh. "You saw what happened to Quentin when you injected Anderson's body. I fear the same thing will happen to me under Petofi's curse. No, Julia, he anticipated your science. I fear I may be this way.... forever." Julia isn't happy.

After the titles, Julia starts making other suggestions, such as a series of transfusions the way Dr. Lang had years earlier, but Barnabas has his doubts. He reminds her how he had no permanent cure until Adam was given life and that "duplicating those circumstances now would be impossible. I'm afraid there is no answer this time. It seems I cannot escape my destiny, Julia. Like in Cassandra's dream, I keep coming back to the point of return." Julia insists that Barnabas not give up hope entirely. "At least there might be a way to control the craving, so that you don't have to fight the urge to....." She cannot finish the sentence, but Barnabas does. "To kill, Julia? That's what I will be compelled to do. To kill, to destroy. I should be the one destroyed! I cannot go on night after night like this again... Julia, you must do it. Tomorrow at dawn. I will say my farewells tonight." "No, Barnabas, No," Julia sobs, but Barnabas is determined.

In the graveyard, Barnabas is walking fast as Julia follows, still trying to talk him out of his suicidal feelings. "Stop it, stop it!" he insists. "Look around you, look at all the people here. People from my time, my family, everyone I've ever loved, all dead! And I belong with them. It's only through a series of unholy events that I am even here to talk with you now!" Julia gets angry at him, and answers "Everyone you've ever loved, Barnabas? What about everyone who loves you now? What about Roger, and Elizabeth and Carolyn and David, and Quentin.. and....and...." But before she can say it, Barnabas is affected and says "I know you care for me, Julia. You are a friend of rare loyalty." Holding back tears, Julia thanks him. "While everyone you've mentioned is important to me, they cannot help me. They cannot keep me from this awful existence. And now I fear that I may harm them next and not be able to stop myself." Julia is surprised at his attitude, and reminds him how he never gave up a fight before, especially a fight against evil that could harm the family. Barnabas has no answer. Julia tells him that "I cannot win this argument alone, but I know a way to convince you." Julia storms off, Barnabas calls to her to no avail. He turns sadly and looks at some of the tombstones and thinks to himself "Perhaps she's right. Perhaps I should fight this. I must not let Petofi have his revenge and take my life away from me! I must gain control, I must!" As he is thinking this, a glow appears near one of the headstones. Barnabas looks over towards it and says "What is that? Who is there?" The light grows stronger.

Julia finds Quentin at Collinwood having a drink and tells him of Barnabas' melancholy state. She insists that Quentin should find him and talk to him since they "have a lot in common, in a strange way." Quentin says he doesn't need to be reminded. He gulps down his drink and heads outside. At Eagle Hill, Barnabas is still looking at the glowing light. From out of the light, Angelique's spirit steps out. Barnabas is happy to see her, and calls to her. She smiles and flashes those big eyes at him, and he begins to react. "I can hear you..." he says. "in my mind. Back....back...we must go back to the point of return.....what does that mean?" But before he can get an answer, he hears Quentin calling to him. Barnabas turns to see Quentin, and then tells him to listen to Angelique as well. Quentin says "Where is she?" Barnabas turns back, and Angelique and the glowing light are gone.

Julia is about to leave Collinwood when Liz comes downstairs and reminds her of her promise to hypnotize her to regain her memories. Julia is still distracted over Barnabas, but reluctantly agrees and leads Liz to the drawing room. Julia takes out her medallion and puts Liz under. Julia tells Liz that "I am going to ask you some questions to bring some hidden memories to the surface." Liz nods in her trance, but then Julia looks a little sinister and adds "And then I am going to help you to erase those memories forever!" Liz nods in her trance.

Episode 1293

Aired: Wednesday June 9, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's close where Liz is scared and the titles, Roger pours Liz a drink and asks her what is wrong. Liz says she had a strange feeling, as if the last time she stood in that spot and saw the reflections of people in the window, a terrible thing happened. Julia asks her if she can remember what, but she can't. Roger tells her that David's imagination seems to be "infectious," but Liz says it has nothing to do with David. She also tells Roger that when she was going over some papers from the cannery, it seemed to her that she wasn't sure of her memories for the past several days. "It's as if I remember some things, but not others." Roger laughs a bit and sits down next to her and says "The same kinds of things happen to me now and again, now that we're getting older." Liz is insulted at this remark, but before she can react, Daphne enters the room and asks if she can bring the chessboard upstairs to David's room since he wanted to play. Liz and Roger look at each other, and then Liz says "Excuse me, but who are you? I don't believe I've ever seen you before!"

Daphne reminds them that she is the governess they hired "weeks ago," and how she used to work for Professor Anderson before he "went away." Liz remembers that Anderson was Carolyn's professor, but has no memory of hiring Daphne. Roger wonders about this too, since he was more interested in seeing if David would go to boarding school. Julia assures Liz and Roger that Daphne is telling the truth, and Daphne takes the chess set and leaves. Liz is now convinced that her memory is spotty, and asks Julia what she can do about it. Roger asks Julia if David likes Daphne and if she has been doing a good job. Julia says that David is "very fond of her" and that "she and Quentin have also grown close, and....." Roger says "Say no more then." He takes his drink and says "Perhaps it's best if my memory stays foggy, at least for the remainder of this afternoon." Liz disagrees, and asks Julia what can be done about it. Julia hesitates, but suggests that perhaps some memories can be retrieved through hypnosis. Roger scoffs again (what else does he ever do, after all?) but Liz looks at Julia and simply says "When can we start?"

David and Daphne are playing chess in David's room, but David is doing more of the teaching. Roger enters and tells Daphne he'd like to be alone with his son for a while. Daphne leaves, and David acts as if he knows his father is about to scold him again. Roger asks if he can sit down, and then does. "David," he begins. "I think I owe you an apology." "An apology?" David asks incredulously. "Yes. It seems I can't trust my memory, and after talking to Julia and Quentin, it seems like there were things happening around here that I was not aware of and you were." David starts to tell him about what happened, but Roger cuts him off with "I know you are familiar with all the details, but I'm afraid your father is a very logical and down to Earth man, David. I just don't want to know about things I cannot accept." David looks sad, but Roger continues "But one thing I can accept is that you acted well, and acted intelligently. You acted the way I'd want my only son to act. I'm very proud of you, David." David hugs his father. Roger tells him that he seems "to be outgrowing governesses. You may be ready for boarding school and more independence, after all." David says "Maybe. Could I think about it some? I like Daphne, after all, and you never know, there might be some other time that you might need me around here." Roger puts his hand on David's shoulder and says "I'll always need you, David. Don't forget that." They smile at each other.

Julia is hesitating over putting Liz under, wondering just how much truth Liz can handle. Liz insists that she must know everything that happened to her, but Julia warns her that retrieving such "traumatic experiences" can often be a "shock" to the system. Liz says she is not afraid, but Julia still hems and haws. Liz then offers to start small, with only memories associated with the Collins' business. Julia seems more amenable to this idea, but says she'll need time to prepare. Liz agrees, and says they should try "after dinner, tonight." Julia says "Maybe... though I think Barnabas may need me for something as well." Liz wonders about this.

Episode 1292

Aired: Tuesday June 8, 1971

Quentin and Julia return to Collinwood to see if they can find David, but when Quentin enters the drawing room, Daphne is there. Quentin smiles when he sees her, and says "Daphne, are you all right?" but she has already taken a gun out of the desk and is pointing it at him.

After the titles, Quentin tries to tell Daphne that it's really him and that he's back to normal, but she is skeptical. Julia enters and pleads with Daphne to drop the gun. Daphne isn't sure she can trust Julia either, and says that "David is the only one I can trust right now!" Julia asks her where David is, since he had disappeared. David enters the drawing room and says "I'm right here!" When this distracts Daphne, Quentin manages to get the gun away from her. David sees this and yells at him not to hurt Daphne. "Why would I want to do that, David?" Quentin says as he puts the gun back in the desk. "Anderson is gone. He's gone forever. Trust me, I'm back to my same old lovable self." David looks at him skeptically and says "If you're really Quentin again, tell me about the time you helped me fix my camera." Quentin looks at him and says "Your father helped you fix the camera, David. I don't know anything about them." David smiles and says "That's right. What else can I ask you?" Quentin laughs a little and moves towards David. "David, you can ask me whatever you want if you want to make sure. But first I want to tell you that I'm very proud of you for the way you helped us to deal with Anderson. You handled yourself more like a man than a boy. So, I might start treating you more like a man if that's okay with you." David happily says "Sure!" Daphne is starting to think Quentin is Quentin again, and moves closer to him. "I... almost killed you..." she says, but before she can go on, Quentin takes her hand and kisses it, saying "I'm sure you'll find a way of making it up to me." Daphne smiles, figuring it must be Quentin all right.

Julia gets off the telephone with the hospital and tells Quentin that Sebastian is out of shock and should make a complete recovery. Quentin comments on how wonderful it must be for Sebastian to be free of Roxanne at last, "just like I'm free of Petofi, for the time being anyway." Julia tells him not to talk like that, and to believe that Petofi really has been destroyed. Taking a drink, Quentin tells her that he intends to never let his guard down. David enters the room and asks Quentin if he'd like to play some chess. Quentin smiles and begins to set up the board as Julia asks David how he managed to escape. David looks at Quentin and says "I think you tried to hypnotize me when you were acting weird." Julia asks "And what happened?" David says "Nothing. I pretended to be hypnotized and told him whatever he'd believe. I don't think I can be hypnotized. I read in a book that you have to be able to really concentrate on something for it to work, and I don't know, I just don't think I can do that." Julia thinks a moment, no doubt remembering her own experience with David, and says "Yes, that can be true."

Roger and Elizabeth return to Collinwood and enter the drawing room as Quentin and David's chess game is close to an end. Roger takes an interest and asks Quentin if David is improving, and Quentin answers "In a lot of ways, Roger. You have a great son." David looks at Roger and asks him if he's "all right now." Roger looks confused and asks David what he means. David says "Well, everyone was acting strange around here, don't you remember? It was like you were all under Anderson's power! But now he's gone and you're all right!" Roger snaps "David, I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about! Now stop this nonsense!" David is about to argue when Quentin stops him with "It's best not to talk about this now." David goes on insisting how Anderson had taken over the family, and Liz tells him to calm down. David runs from the room, yelling how "it's always the same! Nobody believes me!" and Quentin follows him. Roger looks at Julia and scoffs "Will that boy ever outgrow that imagination?" Liz walks over to the window and looks at her reflection in it for a moment, and then runs her finger over the window as if she is remembering, and then gasps in horror for a moment, screaming "No! Don't! Keep away from me!" Roger and Julia look at her wondering what's going on.

Quentin enters David's room, where David is looking through a box of his old toys angrily. Quentin asks if he can come in, and David says that he may as well go back to playing with all his old toys since no one will ever let him grow up. Quentin sits down and tells him he understands how he feels, but that "Your father doesn't seem to want to know about strange happenings around here, whether you see them happening or if I do, or Julia, or anyone. I know you're right about Anderson and everything, but it might be best not to mention it to your father or your aunt." David tells Quentin thanks, but adds "why do we always have to keep secrets from each other? Why do the Collinses always do that?" Quentin smiles and says it's a family hallmark. "David, you can tell me about these kinds of things if you want to, and I'll listen to you, okay? I may even believe you!" David puts the box back under the bed and says okay. Back in the drawing room, Liz says she's all right, and doesn't know why she got frightened by the window. Roger asks if she saw something outside, but she says no. She says she thought she remembered something, but can't put her finger on it. Julia looks intrigued.

Episode 1291

Aired: Monday June 7, 1971

In a repeat of Friday's close, Barnabas is still wailing "Nooooo" over his new vampire existence as Selby holds the gun on both him and Storm. "Oh yes, Mr. Collins," Selby says. "Your payment in full for trying to alter my plans. You didn't think I knew what your greatest fear was?" Barnabas, nearly out of breath says "I'll kill you, Petofi! I swear I'll kill you!" Selby answers "I don't think you will, Barnabas. I think you will be very occupied with something else." We hear the sound of a rooster crowing as the room begins to get a little lighter. "It's nearly dawn," Selby says. Barnabas looks nervously and repeats "Dawn?" Selby answers "Yes, it will be sunrise in only a few more moments. And here we have Quentin and Barnabas Collins, two vampires desperate to find refuge from the dawn... and only one coffin available. I think I'll keep my pistol fixed on you both while I amuse myself watching you fight to the death for that coffin!" Selby laughs as Storm and Barnabas look at each other.

After the titles, Selby is holding the gun on Storm as Barnabas stands with hate in his eyes. "I'll kill you, Petofi! I swear I'll kill you!" Selby points the gun at him and demands he "keep back!" Barnabas sees Daphne's scarf sticking out of Selby's pocket and then notices the ascot Selby is wearing. Suddenly, Barnabas looks like a demon as he yells "You wanted immortality? Well I shall give it to you, but not the way you wanted!" Barnabas makes a move towards Selby, who is about to fire the gun when Barnabas knocks it from his hand. Barnabas reveals a fanged smile as he lunges for Selby's neck. Julia shouts "No, Barnabas, no!" Barnabas grabs Selby and looks like he is about to plunge his fangs into him when instead he tears the ascot away and throws it to Storm. "Quickly! Tie it around your neck!" Barnabas says as he turns his head away from Selby and pushes him aside. Selby yells "NO!" as Storm ties the ascot on tightly. "I would never let your blood mingle with mine, Petofi," Barnabas sneers. Selby looks around for the gun, but then starts to reel. Storm also looks weak for a beat, and then both Storm and Selby pass out. "Barnabas! What's happening?" Julia yells. Barnabas answers "We may know in a moment! If I'm correct, we may have Quentin back!" The rooster crows again and Julia says "Barnabas, we may not have a moment!" Barnabas looks scared. "We must! We must!" he says.

Back at Collinwood, Daphne has awakened and is pounding on the locked door of her room. Outside, David calls to her to see if she is okay. She tells him to get the door open. He manages to pick the lock with a knife blade and free her. She tells him that something is wrong with Quentin and he was the one who locked her in there. David says that he knows Anderson has done something to Quentin. We cut back to the mausoleum where both Storm and Selby are still out, but Storm starts to awaken. Barnabas moves carefully, then Storm takes a look around. Barnabas looks at him, then over at Selby, who is still out. Barnabas sees the gun laying on the floor, but Storm stands slowly and says "Barnabas! What happened?" Barnabas says "You know very well what happened, Petofi," but Storm looks at Barnabas terrified and says "No! I'm still Quentin! I'm still Quentin Collins!" We hear the rooster crowing again.

Storm insists he is Quentin, and Julia begins to panic over what they can do. Barnabas holds her back, and says "Wait," before looking at Storm and saying "The fault lies not in our stars but in ourselves." Storm looks at him confused and says "Barnabas, what are you talking about?" Barnabas smiles confidently and sneers, saying "What do you have to say to that Quentin? The fault lies not in our stars but in ourselves" Storm starts to panic, and yells "Why are you quoting Shakespeare? Tell me!" Selby blinks his eyes and begins to rouse. Barnabas starts to move menacingly towards Storm repeating the Shakespeare line, but then Storm gives up the charade and says "I am still more powerful than you, Barnabas!" Storm pushes Barnabas aside and says "I will save myself in that coffin and you will be destroyed by the dawn! Your fault will lie in the stars AND in yourself!" But from the other side of the room, we hear Selby answer "But my star shines brightest of all!" Barnabas turns to see Selby standing, aiming the gun straight at Storm's chest as he fires it. Storm gasps and falls back clutching his chest. He looks towards Selby and angrily gasps "This won't end here, Quentin...not here... not now...not like this...." before letting out a wail and vanishing. Barnabas looks at Selby and says "Quentin! It's really you!" Julia reminds Barnabas that it's almost dawn, and Barnabas rushes into the secret room. Quentin tells Julia he is all right, just a little dazed from it all. They leave the mausoleum. As they walk through the graveyard, Julia asks "Do you think Petofi is really gone? Did you really destroy him?" "I hope so," Quentin answers, but then looking back towards the mausoleum adds "but it came a little late for Barnabas." As they leave, we dissolve to the coffin inside the closed secret room. We hear the sound of a woman crying, and as we pull back, we see the ghost of Angelique standing over the coffin weeping.

Episode 1290

Aired: Friday June 4, 1971

Grayson Hall's voiceover: "It is a night of terror at Collinwood. A lifelong enemy of Quentin Collins has stolen his body and has discovered the hiding place of the portrait that keeps him immortal. Quentin and those who wish to save him are now at the mercy of this evil man, whose powers seem insurmountable...."

Selby holds the gun on Storm with a smile and says "Well, I wasn't expecting it to be this easy, but Mr. Shaw has certainly helped matters along." Storm snaps "You won't kill me, Petofi. You're like a spoiled cat who never tires of playing with its food. Besides, you still need me alive and you know it." Selby laughs, and answers "No longer, my boy! I know where your portrait is. Once I finish with my business here, I will retrieve it and be on my way." Barnabas, Julia, and Storm contemplate this.

After the titles, Selby has marched Storm, Barnabas & Julia back into the mausoleum. Storm yells at Selby "What have you done to Daphne? I swear, Petofi, death will not keep me from coming after you if you harm her..." Selby answers "I haven't done anything to her. Since you are so smitten with her, you may wish to thank me for bringing her to this place at all. But now with Roxanne destroyed by Mr. Shaw, her purpose in this world seems quite rudderless at the moment." Selby takes Daphne's scarf out of his pocket and handles in momentarily before stuffing it back in. Barnabas says "Daphne's scarf. You were going to give it to Roxanne to wear. And then they would have switched bodies." Selby nods and answers "Your logic is impressive, Barnabas. That's exactly the arrangement I had worked out with her. But now I suppose our Miss Hopkins will stay Miss Hopkins for the time being." Storm angrily snaps "You will never have her!" Selby laughs and answers "I do not share your interest in Miss Hopkins, my dear Quentin. I have but one love in my life, and that love is Petofi!" Storm looks at Barnabas and Julia for a moment and says "Let them go. It's me you want. Fine. You can have me. Take my portrait and kill me for all I care. Just leave my friends alone and never return here!" Selby answers "You're hardly in a position to ask for anything. And besides, I have a matter to work out with Mr. Barnabas Collins. A matter of punishment for interfering in my plans!" As Selby laughs, we hear the squealing of the bat again, Barnabas tries to see where it is, but he is too late. It appears right next to him and bites him in the neck. Barnabas screams and falls to the floor. Julia rushes to his side and feels for a pulse. She looks up at Storm and says shuddering "He's dead! Barnabas is....dead!"

Julia is crouched over Barnabas' body as Selby says "He won't stay dead very long, my dear doctor. I think you know quite well what will happen very very soon." Julia angrily yells at Selby "You inhuman monster! I will destroy you! I swear I will destroy you!" Selby smiles and says "I really don't see how, my dear." Storm tries to comfort Julia, saying "I know how you felt about him," to which Julia answers "I'll still feel that way after he becomes..." but can't finish the sentence. Selby mocks her with "This romantic scene is touching my heart." Storm yells "Why don't you just kill me and get it over with? You know that gun has silver bullets in it!" Barnabas begins to stir a bit as Selby says "Yes, I know that very well Quentin." Barnabas opens his eyes and looks around. He's breathing heavy, and says "This room.... the night... everything is sharper, brighter.... the sounds, I can hear for miles..." He brings his hands to his mouth and then feels his fangs and wails "Nooooooo!"

Barnabas is still wailing "Nooooo" over his new existence as Selby holds the gun on both him and Storm.

Episode 1289

Aired: Thursday June 3, 1971

After a replay of Wednesday's close and the titles, Barnabas tries to avoid the bat in the mausoleum room, but Storm is not afraid. "What more can it do to me?" he says as he moves towards it. Storm passes his hand through the flapping bat and then it vanishes, the bright red shining eyes last. Storm looks at Barnabas and says "It didn't seem as if the bat was here to attack you. It seemed more like it was only watching you." Barnabas gasps and says "Watching me? Watching all of us. Petofi sent that bat after me as a ruse. He must have seen everything we've done." Julia says "If that's true, we must get out of here. We must move quickly!" The three of them exit the secret room and move into the main part of the mausoleum, but when they go through the gate to the outside, Roxanne is waiting for them with a fanged smile.

"You!" Storm says. "Why are you doing this? How can you work with Petofi after he betrayed you so many years ago?" Roxanne looks a bit sad as she answers "You are the image of my beloved, but my beloved is long dead." Storm snaps "That doesn't answer my question." Roxanne shrugs and answers "I made a bargain. A bargain with the devil, I suppose. I didn't ask for this existence. I've loathed every minute of it, loathed myself as well." Barnabas is sensitive to this, and tells her "I understand, Roxanne, I understand more than you will ever know. Please, don't make good on whatever bargain you have made with Petofi." Roxanne angrily tells him "What could you possibly know of what I have been through? No, Barnabas, I will not back out of my bargain with Petofi, not now, not when a new mortal body is waiting for me, waiting for me to start a new life in it!" Storm realizes what she means and says "Daphne! No! I won't let that happen!" Roxanne laughs and says that "It's already too late." Storm starts to move towards her, but before he can, we hear Sebastian's voice say "Yes, Roxanne, it's already too late!" Sebastian steps out from the shadows of the graveyard and holds a gun on Roxanne.

"You are still under my power, Sebastian," Roxanne says. "Put away that gun. I command you." Sebastian, shaking but still determined, looks at her and says "No. Not this time. I must have my life back! And you will not take another!" Roxanne starts to move towards him with menacing eyes, and his grip on the gun begins to weaken. As she moves closer, he suddenly gains some strength and yells "Get back!" as he fires the gun at Roxanne. She screams and holds her body as Julia says "A silver bullet... through her heart!" Roxanne turns towards Barnabas, who gives her a pained look as she falls to the ground and dies with a moan. Sebastian stands over her with the gun, and when cut back to her, she is now a skeleton. Julia gasps, but then the skeleton vanishes. Sebastian takes a breath and points the gun at Storm. "And now, you." he says.

Storm swears to Sebastian he is really Quentin, and Barnabas and Julia tell Sebastian not to hurt him. Sebastian, confused, says "Then let him prove he is really Quentin Collins" when suddenly from behind him we hear Selby say "I can do much better than that, Mr. Shaw." Sebastian turns to see Selby standing behind him, but before he can react, Selby puts his hand on Sebastian's shoulder, and Sebastian becomes unconscious and falls to the ground. Selby takes the gun from his hand as he falls down and points it at Storm. "Well, isn't this an interesting development?" he says with an evil smile.

Episode 1288

Aired: Wednesday June 2, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's close and the titles, Barnabas and Julia try to escape the bat. Julia picks up a poker from the fireplace, but the poker passes right through the bat as it menaces Barnabas. As it gets closer and closer, Barnabas sees the red eyes and tries to guard his neck, but the bat suddenly fades away and the candles are aflame again. Julia asks Barnabas if he is all right, and he says he is, though "Clearly that was only a warning. Petofi wants to toy with me over whether or not he will revisit my curse upon me. Julia, we must stop him!" Julia asks how, and Barnabas feels that the portrait is their "trump card. If we can make Petofi think that we will actually destroy it, he may flee from Quentin's body." Julia is skeptical over this approach, calling it a "long shot." Barnabas tells her that they should ask Quentin that night, and "Besides, until we are sure of David's whereabouts, Quentin may not be safe where we have hidden him. David is one of the few other people who know of that room in the mausoleum." Julia nods, but adds "Barnabas, does David also know about the hidden vault in the basement?" Barnabas gasps, answering "I don't know."

At Collinwood, Selby enters confidently and sees Daphne coming down the stairs. He asks her if she has seen David, and she says she hasn't. He looks at her skeptically and says "Now, you wouldn't be lying to me, would you my dear?" Daphne gets scared of him and begins to back away, further up the stairs. Selby follows "I think you are hiding dear David, but it won't do you any good." Daphne demands to know "Why are you acting this way, Quentin? You're scaring me, stop it!" Selby suddenly stops, and stares off into the distance. "Wait, my dear, wait..." he says. "I have added a set of eyes to my repertoire... and they are seeing something...." Daphne says "You're mad!" and runs upstairs, but Selby doesn't follow. We see in the spot he is staring at an emerging apparition of the basement of the old house. Barnabas is in the basement walking to Adam's old cell. He opens it, and then opens the secret panel in the wall where some jewelry and Quentin's portrait are. Selby smiles and says "Yes... yes! Now my dear Barnabas... where will you try to hide it next?" The apparition follows Barnabas carrying the portrait into the old house's living room, where he puts it behind the bookcase in the hidden room. In the apparition, he tells Julia "Petofi has already searched here. He will not be back." Julia says "I hope you're right" as Selby, watching, laughs and the apparition fades. But at the old house, Barnabas is closing the bookcase when Julia screams "Barnabas! Look!" Barnabas turns, and sees the bat floating in the air, watching him with bright red eyes.

Barnabas tries to move away from the bat, but it fades away again. "We are not safe here," he says, and Julia and he leave to meet Storm/Quentin at the mausoleum. Meanwhile at Collinwood, Selby is knocking on Daphne's door, demanding to come in. When she refuses, he works his magic on the lock and enters. Daphne says "How did you open that door? I locked it from the inside." Selby snaps "A simple lock will not keep me out. I only want to borrow something from you before I leave, my dear. Something that has been close to you..." Daphne moves away and says "Stay away from me! Anderson has done something to you! You're different! Evil!" Selby laughs and answers "I am Anderson, my dear, at least that is how you knew me once. But I wasn't even him, really. I am Count Andreas Petofi. You should remember me well, my dear, since you would not be here if not for me." Daphne is very scared and confused now, but Selby grabs her before she can get to the door. She pleads for him to leave her alone, and he answers "Of course I will, my dear. I only want this." Selby removes her scarf and places it in his pocket. Daphne is surprised, but before she can react, Selby passes his hand over her head and says "And now you will sleep, my dear. Sleep very deeply." She falls out of his arms and onto the bed. "And when you awake, you will have a whole new existence..." he adds before leaving and locking her in.

Barnabas and Julia are at the mausoleum and open the door to the secret room. As they enter, Storm is just getting out of his coffin. He asks them what they are doing there, and they tell him that Petofi knows that they know, etc. and that they need to use the portrait as a weapon. Storm isn't sure about this, but suddenly they hear the squealing of the bat again. Barnabas cannot see it, but we cut to Selby at Collinwood, watching the apparition of Barnabas, Julia & Storm in the mausoleum room, smiling and laughing.

Episode 1287

Aired: Tuesday June 1, 1971

Julia and Barnabas enter the basement to see if everything is safe. As they come downstairs, we see there is no coffin in the usual place as Julia says "He couldn't find anything down here, why would he bother?" Barnabas reminds her that "He might stumble upon something" as they head toward Adam's old cell. When they get there, the door is still locked, to their relief. But a noise off to the side shakes them up as Barnabas shines his light and says "Who is it? Who is back there?"

After the titles, Selby steps out from behind the shadows (or the dark shadows, if you must). Barnabas asks him what he's doing in the basement, and Selby lies that he came by the old house and heard a noise from downstairs. "When I saw the basement door open, I came down here to investigate." Barnabas plays along with "Did you find anyone down here?" Selby says no, and Barnabas lies that he's been meaning to fix some of the support beams in the basement of the old house, since "their noises can often play tricks on you." Barnabas leads them away from Adam's old cell and towards the stairs, but Selby looks momentarily back towards the cell before following Barnabas and Julia to the living room. Barnabas asks Selby where David is, and Selby says that he is sleeping upstairs. Julia says "No, he's not there anymore." Selby looks surprised and blurts "That's impossible." Barnabas asks why, and Selby tries to recover with "Well, I saw him up there before I heard the noise downstairs." Barnabas answers angrily "Well, David is gone now. And I think it's time we dropped this charade." Selby answers "What do you mean?" "I mean I want to know what you've done with David, and I want to know now, Count Petofi," says Barnabas.

"And what makes you think I'm Petofi?" Selby says with a smile. Barnabas answers "You were searching the house for Quentin, who you trapped in that vampire body. I'll make sure you will never find him to destroy him." Selby laughs. "You're mortal now, Barnabas Collins," he says as he circles Barnabas and Julia. "You no longer have the curse of vampirism, but you also no longer have the powers that curse brings. You are altogether vulnerable to a man like me. And I know that as long as you believe that you can save Quentin, you will never harm this body." Julia nervously asks "What do you want? Why do you hate the Collins family so much?" Selby laughs again, and answers "It's not so much hate as simple revenge, my dear doctor. I gave Quentin his particular kind of immortality in order to serve my needs, and he eluded me. I much prefer the daylight to my other immortal existence, shall we say? I only needed to find Roxanne to assist me, and when you trapped her, it became very easy." Barnabas gets angry and asks "What do you want with Roxanne? You are the one who has polluted her soul, Petofi!" Selby snaps "No, my dear Barnabas. She did that quite well on her own. Once again you follow your heart and not your mind." Barnabas looks at Selby sternly and says "Enough of this. Tell me where David is.... or I will destroy your portrait."

Selby tells Barnabas he is bluffing, that he would never destroy the portrait as long as he thought he could save Quentin, and Julia answers that there may be a way to save Quentin in the body he is in now. "We might even be able to save you," she adds to which Selby laughs heartily. "That is one cure I would not prefer, Doctor Hoffman. You see, you'd be curing me from what I treasure most, which is my indefinite existence in this world." Barnabas gets more threatening and demands Selby leave the house. "I must return to Collinwood before nightfall anyway," he says. "But I think I will leave you with something as a warning not to interfere with my plans. It may start out as a warning, but wind up as an eternal punishment. No one knows more than I how much you treasure your present existence, Barnabas...." As Selby leaves laughing, the candles in the room blow out, and suddenly, there is a crashing sound of breaking glass. Barnabas and Julia look around nervously, and suddenly Julia screams as they turn to see a giant bat hovering in the living room, staring at them with bright red eyes...

Episode 1286

Aired: Monday May 31, 1971

In a replay of last Friday's close, Selby and Barnabas are at the door of the old house after searching for Storm, and Barnabas says "Perhaps we'll have better luck in the morning. Good night, Quentin." Selby nods, and says goodnight. Barnabas shuts the door, and Selby begins to leave, but then stops. He notices the garlic has been moved aside, and then quietly moves towards the window. Inside, Storm steps out from behind the bookcase and Barnabas asks him if he is all right. Storm answers "Yes." Barnabas then hesitates as he asks "Where have you been?" Storm catches his breath and says "I couldn't control the hunger for blood. I headed for the waterfront.." Barnabas looks at him knowingly, but Storm continues "I forced myself to run back into the woods. I found a farm... some cattle... I feel so disgusting...." Barnabas tells him "Don't blame yourself for the curse, Quentin. Be grateful you had enough will power to keep from hurting a human being." As Storm smiles at Barnabas, we cut to the outside and see that Selby has been watching all of this from the window. He smiles slyly. "The morning..." we hear him thinking, "I'll be back in the morning when you are most vulnerable, dear Quentin..."

In the morning, Barnabas and Julia are preparing to leave the old house to see Stokes when David comes downstairs. He tells them he's afraid to go back to Collinwood since "something's wrong with Quentin. I think Anderson did something to him after I ran away." Julia tells David that she and Barnabas need to go into town and see Professor Stokes, and David asks to come along. Barnabas tells him that they will stop at Collinwood first and tell Roger and Elizabeth that David is all right and that Daphne should come to the old house to see him. "If we see Quentin, we won't tell him anything, is that all right, David?" Barnabas asks. David says okay, and heads back upstairs. Barnabas looks at Julia and says "Part of me wants to tell him the truth, but it would mean too many other truths unfolding." Julia asks Barnabas if "Quentin, in that body, will be safe where he is now?" "It's the best we can do for him," Barnabas answers as the two of them leave. As they pass through the woods, we move further beyond some trees to see Selby standing and watching.

Selby walks into the old house and smiles when he sees the bookcase. We hear him thinking "You wouldn't be far from your portrait, would you, old boy..." as he walks towards the bookcase and starts to pull it open, not noticing that couple of books have fallen to the floor. He gets the secret room open, and smiles when he sees the coffin inside. But the smile turns to a look of concern when he looks around the room and sees that the portrait is not there. "Where is it?" we hear him think. "What safer place could there be but his own sanctuary, unless...." Selby looks towards the coffin, and after a moment of thought begins to lift the creaky lid. When he gets it open, he angrily looks inside...at its empty contents.

Selby is standing over the empty coffin when he hears David calling for Barnabas and coming downstairs. Selby gets out of the secret room and closes the bookcase as David comes downstairs and sees him. David freezes as Selby says "Good morning, David. What are you doing here?" David says nothing, and Selby moves closer to him with "David, tell me what you are doing here." David says that Barnabas let him stay there and nervously turns away from Selby. "What are you so afraid of?" Selby asks. "Barnabas and I will find Professor Anderson, if that's what's worrying you, my boy." David looks at Selby with some suspicion and asks where he thinks Anderson as gone. "I don't know, David. But something tells me he's hiding right here in this house." "Right here?" David says, but before he can say anything else Selby continues "Don't be scared, David." Selby puts his hand on David's shoulder and says "Tell me everything you know about the hiding places in this house." David seems to be in a trance from Petofi's touch as he answers "The basement has lots of neat hiding places. Barnabas doesn't like people to go down there." Selby smiles "Excellent, my boy, excellent. David, you're feeling very tired this morning. You want to go upstairs and go back to sleep now." David says "Yes. I'm very tired." Selby points upstairs and says "Now go" as David slowly walks upstairs. Satisfied with himself, Selby walks away from the stairway towards the back of the house. Selby comes to the locked iron door and tries the knob unsuccessfully at first. "Poor Barnabas," he thinks to himself. "how little you know of the power of Petofi." Selby presses his hand against the lock and the door clicks open.

Barnabas and Julia have returned, discussing how grateful they'll be to Stokes if he finds an answer to reversing Quentin's condition, which Stokes referred to as "the transmigration of the human soul into a new host body," according to Barnabas. Julia calls for David and gets no response, so she goes upstairs as Barnabas notices that some books have fallen out of the bookcase door. He opens the door and sees that the coffin is still open. Julia comes downstairs and says that David is gone. Barnabas looks at her and says that "Petofi has been here. He's searching." Julia gets scared and says "David! You don't think..." Barnabas says he's not sure, but he must see what else Petofi has disturbed. They leave the room, and we see Barnabas and Julia standing before the open basement door before they look at each other concerned.

Episode 1285

Aired: Friday May 28, 1971

After a repeat of Thursday's close and the titles, Barnabas and Julia agree to accompany Selby, though when Julia asks him how he intends to find Anderson, Selby answers "Perhaps if we follow the sounds of those howling dogs, we shall find our quarry." Barnabas looks a bit uneasy, but the three start to leave when David arrives at the old house. Barnabas asks him what he's doing there, and David says he was looking for Daphne and thought she might be at the old house. "Besides," David says "No one at Collinwood seems to remember anything, and whenever I try to tell them what's happened, they look at me like I'm crazy. It's like being a little kid all over again." Barnabas looks away from David at that remark, and Julia says that it's unsafe for him to be outside when they don't know where Anderson is, and Julia takes David into the old house to watch him while Selby and Barnabas leave.

In the woods, Selby and Barnabas are trying to follow the sounds of the dogs, while Barnabas thinks to himself "I must find a way of getting away from Petofi and finding Quentin before Petofi can destroy him with that gun. I must get to Quentin first!" After some confusion over which direction the dogs were coming from, Barnabas suggests that they split up, and move in the same general direction towards the village and the waterfront. Selby agrees, and the two men part. Barnabas moves quickly towards the village, thinking to himself "To the docks... just as I did so many times. It must be where he went. " Meanwhile, Selby walks through a different part of the woods, when suddenly he comes upon Roxanne.

Roxanne looks at Selby and says "I do hope you haven't forgotten about me." Selby tells her to keep her voice down, and continues "I would never forget you, my dear. After all, you were once my beloved, in a way." Roxanne snaps "You have no right to call me that! We had a bargain. You made me a promise in exchange for my help in your petty revenge. I want what I am owed." Selby laughs "My revenge is hardly petty, my dear. Stealing a man's identity and everything that was his shall be my masterpiece." Roxanne sadly asks him "Did you enjoy the day? Did the sun warm your skin until you felt a cool breeze?" Selby answers "Ah, my dear. Do not be sad. You will enjoy the day soon. I will make good on our bargain. I have acquired a rather beautiful body for you to return to a mortal life in. But you will have to be patient, my dear. I will only make good on our contract when, thanks to your help, Quentin Collins is destroyed!" Roxanne smiles.

Barnabas is searching the docks when Selby arrives. "You haven't had any luck either?" Selby says. "No," answers Barnabas. "But some people at the Blue Whale claim to have heard some screams. I was not happy to hear that." Selby sneers "Those screams could be illusions brought about by alcohol. We should head back to Collinwood." At the old house, David tells Julia that "something about Quentin seemed different. He didn't talk to me or ask me about the people at Collinwood like he usually does. He's usually the only one who believes me!" Julia tells David that Quentin has a lot on his mind. David yawns, and Julia says that it's pretty late, and maybe David should go on upstairs and try to get some sleep. David goes upstairs, and then there is some noise outside. Julia looks out the window, and gasps. Outside the house, it's Storm, tired and out of breath.... and with a bloody face. He comes up to the door and begs Julia to let him in. Julia isn't sure, but Storm assures her that "my lust has been satisfied... what am I? What have I become?" Julia then hears Selby and Barnabas talking while approaching. She moves the garlic aside and helps Storm inside and behind the bookcase. A moment later, Selby and Barnabas are at the door, and Barnabas says "Perhaps we'll have better luck in the morning.

Episode 1284

Aired: Thursday May 27, 1971

Grayson Hall's voiceover: "A night of fear has begun on the Collins estate, for in the old house, an experiment is taking place, an experiment that will have terrifying consequences. Quentin Collins has been imprisoned in the body of a member of the living dead by an enemy long thought vanished. On this night, a cure will be attempted, but oftentimes the residents of this house forget how science does not always mix well with the supernatural...."

In the basement of the old house, Storm sits in Julia's make-shift laboratory as she prepares a hypodermic needle. He asks her how long these treatments will take, and she answers "I'm not sure. This first injection should give me some idea of how strong the curse placed on Anderson's body is." Storm rolls up his sleeve and says "To be honest, I only feel a slight hunger right now, Julia. Perhaps Petofi found a way to weaken the curse in this body." Julia is hopeful as she gives him the shot. After a moment, she asks him how he feels, and at first he says he feels nothing, but suddenly Storm reels a bit and collapses into a row of test tubes. Julia yells for Barnabas.

After the titles, Barnabas has entered the lab and sees Storm laying on the floor unconscious. He asks Julia to help him get Storm into a chair and asks Julia what happened. She knows it's a reaction to the injection, to which Barnabas answers "I never had such a reaction." Suddenly, Storm wakes up with a huge breath, and before Barnabas can ask him if he's all right, Storm throws both Julia and Barnabas aside, yelling "The hunger....the HUNGER!" Julia tries to move away, but Storm looks nearly rabid as he eyes both Julia and Barnabas and says angrily "I...must...have....blood! I must...." Barnabas yells "Quentin! No!" but Storm starts to move towards them. Barnabas takes a cross from his jacket pocket and holds Storm at bay while saying "Quentin, forgive me...I cannot let you do this! You must get control of it! You must!" Storm screams at the sight of the cross, and throws some lab equipment out of his way before running out of the lab and upstairs. Barnabas and Julia follow, but when they get upstairs, they see Storm open the front door, and though stopped by the garlic, he dematerializes before their eyes. Julia looks at Barnabas and says "He's gone!"

Julia and Barnabas try to figure out where Storm/Quentin may have gone, but all Barnabas can conclude is that "He could be anywhere...anywhere the blood lust takes him. Oh Julia, how many nights did I suffer the same fate? The powerlessness one feels as the curse takes complete control of you..." Julia surmises that it had to be the injection that caused the intense reaction, since Storm had claimed to feel fine before the shot. "Why would that happen?" Barnabas asks. Julia isn't sure, but thinks that "perhaps Petofi's curse was different than your own." Barnabas gravely looks at Julia and says "Or that Petofi anticipated what we might do and laid a trap within that body somehow." Julia says they can't be sure. "Can we do nothing for him then?" Barnabas asks. "Will he have to remain in this condition?" Julia answers "I don't know. He could even get worse. He may go on killing, Barnabas, unable to stop himself." Barnabas sadly looks at Julia and says "Or someone else will stop him."

Julia looks at Barnabas and asks him if he could really destroy Storm/Quentin, and Barnabas says "Of course not. I didn't mean me. I meant Petofi in Quentin's body. This must be his plan, Julia, his plan for revenge. To make Quentin into what he was, and then to destroy it while stealing Quentin's identity! All the time knowing what our every move would be in trying to save him from that fate." Julia asks Barnabas "How to we fight someone like this?" Barnabas says he doesn't know, but that "as long as he doesn't know we know this, we have somewhat of an advantage." There is a knock at the door. Julia is hopeful that it's Storm, but when Barnabas answers, it's Selby, and he's got the silver bullet gun. "I was waiting for you to come get me at Collinwood. I didn't find Roxanne, but I have a feeling we'll get lucky tonight finding Anderson."

Episode 1283

Aired: Wednesday May 26, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's close from the point where Selby returns to the old house and the titles, Selby presses Barnabas about the portrait, but Barnabas assures him that it's in a very safe place. "I'd feel better if I could just see it and make sure," Selby says slyly, but Barnabas answers "You mean you didn't find a safe place for it last night before you went to Collinwood?" Selby, looking away from Barnabas, starts thinking fast. "Well, I...thought I did. But now I'm not so sure." Barnabas grows more confident in his deception and adds "You seemed fairly confident last night when you told Julia and myself that you had found the perfect hiding place. I'm sure you were right, and besides, Anderson could not find it in the daytime anyway." "I guess you're right," a defeated Selby says quietly. "Shall we go?" Julia asks. Selby, still trying to figure out how to get the portrait, joins them on their way out.

The three arrive at Collinwood, where Barnabas warns Julia that "even though Anderson is gone, the family may still be under Roxanne's influence. We must be careful. She could still be in this house." Selby, overhearing this, looks at Barnabas and bluntly asks him if he remembers any of his own hiding places in Collinwood that Roxanne may be using. Barnabas answers that "the only time I found solace here was when my father put me in the tower room in 1795. There are no other coffins here unless Roxanne and Anderson brought them." Selby says "Of course," but then we hear him thinking "How will I find where Quentin dematerialized to? Barnabas Collins doesn't seem to know. I may need more help from dear Roxanne after all...." Selby says he will search Collinwood for Roxanne just as Elizabeth comes downstairs. She looks at the three of them and says "Well, good morning. What's this about searching Collinwood for Roxanne?"

The group stands silent from Liz's question, Selby glaring at her, but then she follows it up with "Who is Roxanne? And Barnabas! Where have you been keeping yourself! Come, you must have breakfast with us this morning." Barnabas and Julia look at each other and then Barnabas asks Liz "I've been busy with some things, dear cousin, but I had heard that there were some problems with Professor Anderson, and I wanted to make sure you were all right." Liz looks confused and answers "I don't know what you mean. I haven't even met Carolyn's professor. For some reason, I remember inviting him over to dinner, but I don't think he ever showed up. Well, no matter. I'll tell Mrs. Johnson that you'll be staying for breakfast." Liz exits, and Julia says "Barnabas, she has no memory of Anderson at all!" Barnabas says "Yes, it would seem that his influence here has passed. I guess you managed to break his control when you chased him from Collinwood, Quentin." Selby nods, and adds "Well, if you'll excuse me, I'm feeling quite famished. I think I will get an early start on breakfast." After he follows Liz, Barnabas stops Julia from following and says to her quietly "Petofi may no longer be a vampire, but he may still be controlling the people in this house. We need to find out why." Julia agrees.

Barnabas and Julia return to the old house at dusk. They comment how they managed to throw Selby/Petofi off the trail today, but they will need to find some way of saving Quentin and possibly the family if they are still under Petofi's power. The bookcase opens and Storm comes out. "Quentin!" Barnabas says. "How do you feel?" Storm hmphs, and answers "I've felt better. Did you find anything out during the day?" Julia answers "We think Petofi is still controlling the family. He's still searching for your portrait." Storm laughs "His insurance policy! Without it, he's practically right back where he started, only under a different curse than the one he left me with." Julia looks at Storm and says "Yes, but what Petofi doesn't know is that your curse is curable." Storm looks at her curiously, and Julia continues "If I could change Barnabas' condition with my series of injections, perhaps I could do the same for you." Storm/Quentin considers this possibility. (It is interesting to note that this particular plot angle was introduced in order to gain some leverage as David Selby was re-negotiating his contract at this time)

Episode 1282

Aired: Tuesday May 25, 1971

After a replay of Monday's close and the titles, Storm stands desperately before Barnabas in the front door of the old house as the sun is about to rise. "Please hear me! I am Quentin! You must let me inside!" Barnabas hesitates, and says he doesn't know how to be sure it really is Quentin. Julia says she's not sure whether or not to hold a cross on him. Storm grows more frantic and rattles off "My wife was Jenny, the gypsies were Magda and Sandor, my favorite was Jamieson..." Barnabas cuts him off with "Petofi could know all that!" Storm grows more panicked until Barnabas suddenly gains some inspiration and looks at Storm saying "The fault lies not within our stars, but in ourselves." Storm looks at Barnabas confused for a long beat, but then sighs deeply and says "But no star shines brighter than mine!" Barnabas looks at Storm astonished, and then sweeps the garlic aside with his shoe. "Quickly, Julia! Help him into the coffin!" Storm runs inside towards the bookcase, which Julia swings open. Barnabas watches, and when we cut back to Julia she is closing the bookcase into the wall as a sunbeam shines into the room. Julia looks at Barnabas and asks "It's really Quentin in there?" "Yes," Barnabas answers. "Which means Petofi has taken control of Quentin's body. And I'm certain that he will be here fairly soon." Julia contemplates this.

"What do we do when he gets here?" Julia asks. Barnabas' wheels are turning as he answers "We mustn't let on that we know. It will buy us some time to help defeat Petofi. It's doubtful Petofi knows Quentin came here, but he will try to use us to destroy him somehow." Barnabas moves the garlic back into place to avoid suspicion and closes the front door. Julia answers "We mustn't let that happen. But how can we fight this kind of power?" Barnabas answers that Quentin managed to get his body back from Petofi in 1897, only he doesn't know how he did it, and to find an answer, they will have to wait until dark. The front door opens, and Selby enters. Barnabas looks at him and says "Quentin! You're....all right."

"Yes, I'm fine, Barnabas" Selby answers. "What happened at Collinwood?" Julia asks. Selby looks away from them and begins "I managed to free David. When Anderson tried to trap me inside the house, I managed to chase him out of Collinwood with the gun." Barnabas, playing along, says "Anderson has left Collinwood? He's gone?" Selby continues "Yes. The rest of the family is still asleep. I'll check on them later to see if they are still under his influence." As Selby speaks, he steps into the sunbeam. He jerks back for a moment, but then smiles and moves into it, opening the curtains and looking out the window with a broad smile. "A beautiful sunny morning, isn't it? The sun feels very warm today. It will be a good day to search for Anderson!" Barnabas is lost in thought for a moment until Selby says "Barnabas?" and then Barnabas answers "Yes, we should find out where Anderson has fled to. Quentin, why don't you check on the family at Collinwood first, and then after a quick breakfast in town, we can begin our search." Selby nods and leaves. Julia looks at Barnabas and asks "Do you think he knows that we know?" Barnabas says "I'm not sure. And I must remember that it's Petofi inside that body, I must!"

Julia and Barnabas are preparing to leave the old house as Barnabas stands in a sunbeam through the window. "Petofi is so unspeakably evil, Julia," he says. "But when he spoke of feeling the warmth of the sun, I pitied him and felt his joy all at once. I thought back to that day in the hospital with Dr. Lang and how the entire world looked so new and beautiful in the daylight I hadn't seen for centuries. He's experiencing that now. Maybe it..." Julia cuts him off with a stern "It won't, Barnabas. It won't change him. He was evil to begin with, and he'll always be evil. We must never let our guard down around him, ever!" They open the door to leave, but Selby is standing there. "The family are still asleep," he says. "I thought I'd meet you back here to tell you. We can't be sure if they're still under Anderson's power." Barnabas says "Then we should go at once." Selby stops and says "Well, I'd feel a lot better if we made sure my portrait was in a safe place." Barnabas and Julia look at each other.

Episode 1281

Aired: Monday May 24, 1971

Quentin sits on the couch with Roxanne behind him, holding his shoulders tight. Quentin demands to know what Petofi wants of him. "I only want to give you something, dear boy," he says as he approaches. Quentin struggles to get free, and begs not to be "touched with that hand! I won't let you age me again! Stay away from me." Anderson/Petofi says "I certainly don't want to age you, Quentin. I don't want to harm you at all. I only want to do this." He takes an ascot out of his pocket and ties it around Quentin's neck. "One of yours, Quentin. I took it from your upstairs bureau. You can let him go, my dear," says Anderson/Petofi as Roxanne steps back. Quentin pulls on the tie, confused, but cannot get it loose. As Anderson/Petofi's smile grows, Quentin seems disoriented, and then reels a bit. "What's....happening...no.... no.....NO!" he yells as he passes out. Anderson/Petofi starts to laugh, but as the shot gets blurry, we hear Anderson/Petofi's laughter morph into David Selby's laughter, as he stands up, laughing. We pan over to James Storm, dazed and slowly rising from the floor. He looks at himself, and then at Selby, and shocked, screams "Petofi! You've stolen my body again!" Selby looks at him and laughs with an evil smile.

NOTE: From this point with Quentin & Petofi switching bodies again, I will refer to each character by the actor playing them: "Storm" meaning Quentin trapped in James Storm's vampire Anderson/Petofi body & "Selby" meaning Petofi possessing Quentin.

After the titles, Selby continues to laugh at Storm while Storm's anger grows. He tries to lunge at Selby, but Selby pulls the gun on him and holds him back. "I don't want to destroy you just yet, Quentin," he says. "I want you to feel what I've felt all these years. I want you to feel the lust for blood and the deathly fear of daylight!" "I didn't know you understood fear, Petofi," Storm snaps. Selby sneers "Oh, I know the agony of fear, my dear Quentin. But it will be nothing compared to the agony you will feel. I want you alive to see me take over your family and steal everything you are from you. Your eternal youth, your wealth, and even your love!" Storm almost lunges again, but Selby still has the gun. "No, no, Quentin. Now you're going to understand what it feels like to be a hunted animal. You and your friends knew to hunt the vampire, and soon I'll make sure everyone in this entire pathetic little seatown knows just who you are." Storm looks at Selby with pure hatred and says "I'll make sure to kill you first." Selby laughs and asks how, and Storm cracks an evil smile and says "What do you think will happen if I shred Tate's portrait of me to ribbons?" Selby wasn't expecting this.

"Yes, Petofi. What if I destroy Tate's portrait?" Storm continues. "You'll become a decaying hundred year old walking corpse at the mercy of the full moon and all the terrors it holds. You compared me to a hunted animal a moment ago, what will you be then?" Selby holds the gun on Storm and says "That is exactly why you will tell me where that portrait is, Mr. Collins." "You must be kidding me!" Storm replies. "You won't kill me because then my friends will destroy that portrait!" Selby sneers "Will they? When they see me?" and laughs a little.

Back at the old house, David runs in frantically to Barnabas and Julia. He tells them that Quentin was trying to kill Anderson with the gun, and how he managed to escape. Julia sends him upstairs while Barnabas is hopeful that Quentin managed to kill Anderson without harming any of the family. Julia wonders when they'll know for sure, and Barnabas mentions that it is almost dawn. Back at Collinwood, Storm and Selby are still staring each other down trying to outbluff each other. "I know you won't kill me as long as you don't have that portrait. You'll never be able to rest without it," Storm says. We hear the sound of a rooster crowing and Selby says "You better make up your mind, Quentin. It's almost dawn. I may not know where your portrait is, but you haven't a clue where my coffin is. In a few moments, you will need to know that most urgently!" Storm grows desperate.

The drawing room is growing a bit lighter as we hear another rooster crow. Selby is still holding the gun while saying "The portrait for the coffin, Quentin. Time is running out." Storm defiantly says "Then I'll buy more time!" and he dematerializes! Selby almost fires the gun, but Storm is gone. At the old house, Barnabas is looking out the window at the imminent sunrise when suddenly there is frantic pounding at the front door. He goes to the door with Julia, and it is Storm! Barnabas moves back a step and angrily says "Petofi! How dare you come here! Julia! The cross! We shall hold him at bay until the dawn!" Storm frantically pleads "No, Barnabas! It's me, Quentin! Petofi has stolen my body again!" Confused, Barnabas says "What?" Storm repeats "Petofi has switched bodies with me! I am Quentin Collins! I need to get to Roxanne's coffin behind the bookcase! The garlic prevented me from materializing inside! Let me in! Hurry!" Barnabas isn't sure what to do as Julia pleads "How do we know he's Quentin? How do we know?" Barnabas says "I... don't know!" Storm grows more frantic and yells "Barnabas!!!!" as we hear the rooster crowing....

Episode 1280

Aired: Friday May 21, 1971

After a replay of Thursday's close and the titles, Quentin waits in the drawing room reaching behind his back for the gun, but when the footsteps get louder, it's David, followed by Roger, then Elizabeth, and then Carolyn. Quentin moves his hand away from the gun, and asks David if he is all right. David nods and runs towards Quentin. Quentin examines the side of his neck for bite marks but finds nothing. "Are you satisfied now, Quentin?" Roger says. Quentin stands and says "Where's Anderson? This is between him and me." Anderson enters the room behind the others and says "No, no, Quentin. This is between you and all of us."

"Let the boy go," Quentin demands. Anderson/Petofi smiles and pours himself a brandy. "I have little interest in the boy as you know my dear Quentin," he says. "But someone else is interested in him a great deal." Quentin answers angrily "Then tell her that he's not Jamieson." Anderson/Petofi turns to face Quentin and sneers "Maybe you should tell her, dear boy." Quentin quickly takes out the gun and points it at Anderson/Petofi. "You can tell her in hell, Petofi," he says, but before he can fire, Roger stands in his way. "Roger step aside! Now!" Quentin shouts in frustration as Roger follows Anderson/Petofi's movements. Quentin surveys the room quickly, and maneuvers behind the couch to make Anderson/Petofi and Roger step to the side. As he moves, Carolyn & Liz flank Anderson/Petofi, who drinks his brandy and laughs. "It seems I am surrounded on all sides by your loving family, Quentin," he laughs. "Do you really want to sacrifice any of them?" David yells for Quentin not to shoot, while Quentin holds the gun on them, frustrated.

Anderson/Petofi taunts Quentin, knowing he will not fire the gun, but Quentin glances over at David, and by moving to the side and forcing the group around Anderson/Petofi to move as well, David is given a clear path to the front door. "Go David! Run! Now!" Quentin says, protecting him with the gun as David runs from the room and out of the house. He looks at Anderson/Petofi and says "You failed Petofi! The boy is safe." "The boy means nothing to me as I told you," Anderson/Petofi sneers. "And safety is certainly relative, isn't it?" Quentin wonders about the statement, and doesn't notice that from behind him, the secret panel has opened and Roxanne is slowly moving towards him. Quentin turns to see her, but she manages to knock the gun from his hand and knocks him to the floor with a sweep of her hand. As Quentin sits helpless, Anderson/Petofi and Roxanne stand over him, laughing.
