Episode 1282

Aired: Tuesday May 25, 1971

After a replay of Monday's close and the titles, Storm stands desperately before Barnabas in the front door of the old house as the sun is about to rise. "Please hear me! I am Quentin! You must let me inside!" Barnabas hesitates, and says he doesn't know how to be sure it really is Quentin. Julia says she's not sure whether or not to hold a cross on him. Storm grows more frantic and rattles off "My wife was Jenny, the gypsies were Magda and Sandor, my favorite was Jamieson..." Barnabas cuts him off with "Petofi could know all that!" Storm grows more panicked until Barnabas suddenly gains some inspiration and looks at Storm saying "The fault lies not within our stars, but in ourselves." Storm looks at Barnabas confused for a long beat, but then sighs deeply and says "But no star shines brighter than mine!" Barnabas looks at Storm astonished, and then sweeps the garlic aside with his shoe. "Quickly, Julia! Help him into the coffin!" Storm runs inside towards the bookcase, which Julia swings open. Barnabas watches, and when we cut back to Julia she is closing the bookcase into the wall as a sunbeam shines into the room. Julia looks at Barnabas and asks "It's really Quentin in there?" "Yes," Barnabas answers. "Which means Petofi has taken control of Quentin's body. And I'm certain that he will be here fairly soon." Julia contemplates this.

"What do we do when he gets here?" Julia asks. Barnabas' wheels are turning as he answers "We mustn't let on that we know. It will buy us some time to help defeat Petofi. It's doubtful Petofi knows Quentin came here, but he will try to use us to destroy him somehow." Barnabas moves the garlic back into place to avoid suspicion and closes the front door. Julia answers "We mustn't let that happen. But how can we fight this kind of power?" Barnabas answers that Quentin managed to get his body back from Petofi in 1897, only he doesn't know how he did it, and to find an answer, they will have to wait until dark. The front door opens, and Selby enters. Barnabas looks at him and says "Quentin! You're....all right."

"Yes, I'm fine, Barnabas" Selby answers. "What happened at Collinwood?" Julia asks. Selby looks away from them and begins "I managed to free David. When Anderson tried to trap me inside the house, I managed to chase him out of Collinwood with the gun." Barnabas, playing along, says "Anderson has left Collinwood? He's gone?" Selby continues "Yes. The rest of the family is still asleep. I'll check on them later to see if they are still under his influence." As Selby speaks, he steps into the sunbeam. He jerks back for a moment, but then smiles and moves into it, opening the curtains and looking out the window with a broad smile. "A beautiful sunny morning, isn't it? The sun feels very warm today. It will be a good day to search for Anderson!" Barnabas is lost in thought for a moment until Selby says "Barnabas?" and then Barnabas answers "Yes, we should find out where Anderson has fled to. Quentin, why don't you check on the family at Collinwood first, and then after a quick breakfast in town, we can begin our search." Selby nods and leaves. Julia looks at Barnabas and asks "Do you think he knows that we know?" Barnabas says "I'm not sure. And I must remember that it's Petofi inside that body, I must!"

Julia and Barnabas are preparing to leave the old house as Barnabas stands in a sunbeam through the window. "Petofi is so unspeakably evil, Julia," he says. "But when he spoke of feeling the warmth of the sun, I pitied him and felt his joy all at once. I thought back to that day in the hospital with Dr. Lang and how the entire world looked so new and beautiful in the daylight I hadn't seen for centuries. He's experiencing that now. Maybe it..." Julia cuts him off with a stern "It won't, Barnabas. It won't change him. He was evil to begin with, and he'll always be evil. We must never let our guard down around him, ever!" They open the door to leave, but Selby is standing there. "The family are still asleep," he says. "I thought I'd meet you back here to tell you. We can't be sure if they're still under Anderson's power." Barnabas says "Then we should go at once." Selby stops and says "Well, I'd feel a lot better if we made sure my portrait was in a safe place." Barnabas and Julia look at each other.
