Episode 1279

Aired: Thursday May 20, 1971

After a replay of Wednesday's close and the titles, Quentin and Barnabas discuss what has happened to David. "They must have taken him," Barnabas insists. "And probably to Roxanne." Quentin isn't so sure, since he knows that Anderson/Petofi has targeted him much more than the rest of the family. Stokes asks Quentin why a man such as Count Petofi would be an enemy, and Quentin tells Stokes he doesn't know as Barnabas remains silent. Barnabas says that if they indeed have David, he must be up at Collinwood. Stokes is more skeptical, saying that they may have taken him anywhere, since "we've never found their daytime hiding place. We must also consider the possibility that David simply got scared and ran off." Quentin doubts that, since David knew enough to make the old house a haven from Anderson/Petofi's power, so it doesn't make sense that he would run away. There is knock at the door, and the three men look at each other.

Barnabas opens the door, and it is Roger. "Hello, Barnabas," he says. "I suppose you won't be gracious enough to move all this junk out of the way and invite me in." Barnabas says he cannot, and that he is sorry, "but let's get to the point." "Yes, I agree," says Roger. "Where is Quentin?" Quentin comes into view and snaps "Where is he? What have you done with David?" Roger looks offended and sneers "He is my son, Quentin, not yours. I will do with him as I see fit. Frankly, I find your attitude very rude." Quentin answers "Even under Petofi's power, you haven't lost any of your charm, Roger." Roger hmphs, and says "Anderson wants to see you. Tonight. At Collinwood. Come alone if you want to see David. No harm will come to him. That's all." Roger walks away into the darkness as Quentin watches.

Quentin is loading the gun with the silver bullets while Barnabas begs him to be careful. "I don't think they've hurt David," says Barnabas. "I know, " Quentin answers. "It's me Petofi wants. David is just the lure." Stokes interrupts "It maybe Roxanne who wants David, however. I suggest you be very very careful. You will be surrounded by danger on all sides, Quentin." Quentin holds the gun and says "I'm pretty handy with this, Professor. I'll be back with David." Stokes reminds Quentin that he will have to shoot Anderson directly in the heart to destroy him. Barnabas again reminds him not to hurt anyone else in the family, especially since "they cannot control their own actions. Without the evil grip of Petofi, Roger would never allow his son to be in such a dangerous position." Quentin tells Barnabas he knows, and that "I've always liked Roger, even when he was a bit snobby. I know what I have to do." Quentin puts the gun behind his back in his belt, and puts a jacket on to cover it before leaving the old house.

At Collinwood, Roger is having a drink in the drawing room as Quentin storms in. "Well, that didn't take long," Roger sneers. "Where is he?" Quentin says angrily. "Have a seat. I'll bring them to you," says Roger. Quentin sits down and reaches behind his back towards the gun as we hear the sound of several footsteps approaching.

Episode 1278

Aired: Wednesday May 19, 1971

At the Blue Whale, Barnabas looks down at Quentin's gun and silver bullets and looks remorseful. Stokes tells Quentin that the gun will be more effective at protecting him from Anderson than anything else since it can also keep his servants at bay. "Unless they're willing to die for him as well," Stokes adds, to which Quentin and Barnabas look concerned.

After the titles, Quentin wonders aloud whether or not Roger, Liz or Carolyn would be willing to take a bullet and die for Anderson because of his power. Barnabas insists that "we must never find that out." Stokes points out that "It may be more of a question of whether they thing you would be willing to shoot them to destroy Anderson." Quentin tells Stokes "That's a very large bluff that I'm afraid they may call." Barnabas tells Quentin there's no other choice. Quentin looks at him and asks if there's also no other choice but to destroy Roxanne as well. Barnabas looks sad and meekly says "Yes. We must destroy them both."

At the old house, Daphne is looking out the window at the setting sun and wondering why no one has come back yet. David assures her that they are all well protected, and that no one can get into the old house since they can't cross the barrier of garlic that has been set up. Daphne is skeptical, but David tells her all about the books he has read on the subject, and how "neither a vampire or their servants can cross the line." Daphne tells David she wishes she had his confidence, since she still fears Anderson and "what he is capable of." David tells Daphne not to worry, since Quentin, Barnabas & Julia will be back soon, but he looks nervous as he watches the sun setting.

David is alone downstairs in the old house when there is a knock at the door. When he opens the door, it's Sebastian. David is surprised to see him, and asks him what he wants. Sebastian says he has talked to Quentin and Barnabas, and wants to help fight Anderson. "I know a lot about Roxanne, David," he says. "I think I can help." David asks him to come inside, but Sebastian says that Quentin and Barnabas are waiting for him outside and that there isn't much time. David gets a little more skeptical and asks where they are. Sebastian points off and says "They're out there in the woods. They told me to come and get you." David leans out the door to see, saying "Where? I don't see...." and Sebastian is able to grab him. David yells to be put down, but Sebastian says "I can't do that, David." David struggles to get his silver cross out of his pocket, but he drops it in the front door. Practically sobbing, Sebastian continues "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I just can't do anything I want anymore..." As he turns, we see blood running from two fresh fang wounds in his neck as he carries David off.

Quentin, Barnabas & Stokes return to the old house. Daphne comes downstairs and says she must have fallen asleep. Quentin asks where David is, and Daphne says she doesn't know. Quentin starts to call for him, and there is no answer. Barnabas says "He couldn't have gone outside. He knew not to leave this house after dark! Especially after what happened last night." Stokes picks up the silver cross in the doorway and says "Does this belong to David?" Quentin examines it and looks at Stokes. "It's David's." he says. "Then they have him," says Barnabas as the four of them look at each other.

Episode 1277

Aired: Tuesday May 18, 1971

At the Blue Whale, Sebastian is drinking at the bar and looking sullen. Quentin enters and spins him around on his barstool. Sebastian says "You again....what do you want now?" Quentin says "I want your help, Shaw. I want to know everything you know about Roxanne Drew and I want to know now." Sebastian looks uncomfortable.

After the titles, Sebastian tells Quentin he doesn't know anything about Roxanne. Quentin demands that he tell him "anything." Sebastian says he only knows he never wants to see her again, that he's "trying to get out of Collinwood. To get away from her. But I always hear her voice in my mind, calling me, calling me. I can't take it!" He gulps more alcohol down as Quentin looks on. "Her power over me is weakening since she hasn't fed from me in a while, Mr. Collins. Do you know what I mean? Do you want to know how she feeds from me and puts me under her power with each bite?" Quentin grabs him and tells him to get hold of himself. "If you've been away from her this long, Shaw, you should have your free will back. You should be able to leave town whenever you please." Sebastian laughs and says "Yeah, run away. I should run away after leaving Carolyn Stoddard to her fate. I can't do that! I have to find a way of undoing what I've done, but I'm afraid Roxanne will take hold of me again!"

Barnabas and Stokes enter the Blue Whale and see Quentin and Shaw. Quentin drags Shaw over to a table and Stokes begins to question him about Roxanne. All Shaw knows is that she has only referred to Anderson as a "partner" but in what he has no idea. Barnabas asks Shaw where he met Roxanne and how he came under her control. Shaw says that he was called a few years back to work up the horoscopes for "some silly rich ladies" who lived amongst Park Avenue society in New York city. He was given the address of Roxanne by one of them, and when he visited her that night, she bit him and made him her servant. They traveled around the country before "one of the horoscopes I read for her stated that she needed to go to the point of return. It was then that she insisted on coming here, to Collinsport." "So," Barnabas says, "she is from this town. Somehow that seems to make sense."

Stokes tells Barnabas "If Roxanne is from Collinsport, and we know that she cannot be the Roxanne Drew who lived in 1840, it logically follows that she may be part of the same family." Stokes smiles, takes a drink, and says "It seems I have another family history to research now." Barnabas thinks a moment and says "It's so strange how much she resembles her counterpart in parallel time." Stokes nods and says "Yes, the intricacies of parallel time are truly remarkable. I'm happy I only share my outward appearance with my counterpart in that universe from what you told me." Barnabas smiles, but gets a little nervous as Stokes continues. "Strange how you had no counterpart in that world, Barnabas. Even when the Roxanne Drew we are dealing with has no natural reason to still be amongst the living, she had a counterpart in the parallel timeband. But you never came across your own...." Barnabas interrupts "Perhaps my counterpart in that time never left England to return to Collinsport, Professor." Stokes nods and says "Perhaps. I suppose we can never know for sure." Quentin enters from the outside and says that Sebastian is planning on leaving town. "I also made a purchase that you should both find interesting," says Quentin, as he removes a gun and places it on the table along with some shiny silver bullets.

Episode 1276

Aired: Monday May 17, 1971

Kate Jackson's voiceover: "A new day dawns over the great house at Collinwood, after a terrifying night of evil. While several members of the family are under the power of that evil, others have barricaded themselves inside the old house on the estate, surrounding it with a barrier to keep the evil at bay during the seemingly endless hours of the night. On this day, they must decide how to face the evil and destroy it, without also harming the members of the family that are at its mercy..."

At the old house, it is morning. Julia and Barnabas are drinking some coffee in the living room and discuss how glad they are that the long night is finally over. Quentin comes downstairs and says that David is sleeping and is fine. "It's strange how Roxanne thought of him as Jamieson, when I've done the same," Quentin says. Barnabas agrees, though he points out "But at last we have some clue as to Roxanne's true identity. I intend to find out exactly who she is."

After the titles, Julia suggests looking through the Collins family history to see if there's any mention of a broken courtship between Jamieson Collins and anyone named Roxanne, but Quentin reminds her how the Collins family history is often "written more with wishful thinking than with truth." Barnabas agrees, and suggests that Professor Stokes may be helpful, since he has researched the family history and has "made discoveries of various things that most outsiders would never know." Barnabas decides to visit Stokes that day to see if he can find out anything about Roxanne.

Daphne comes downstairs and Quentin greets her with a smile. He thanks her again for coming to David's rescue. Julia asks her if she remembers anything of her past now that she has broken free of Anderson/Petofi's control. Daphne says she doesn't, and she still doesn't remember anything about her life before she was working as Anderson's assistant at the college. Quentin asks Julia if hypnotizing her again will help, but Julia answers that all that would most likely happen is that Daphne would begin to describe the life of Daphne Harridge Collins over 100 years ago. Daphne asks Julia why she describes someone else's life under hypnosis, and Julia has no answer. "I don't know. It could be anything," she says. Daphne answers "What if that's who I am?" Julia wonders.

Daphne presses the issue, but Julia insists that it would be "impossible" for her to be Daphne Harridge Collins, since that Daphne lived out a normal life and died years ago. Quentin agrees, saying "I know enough about my namesake's life that his wife did not die young. If I remember correctly, she even outlived him." Daphne gets more frustrated and confused, not knowing what her identity may be. Quentin takes her by the shoulders, looks in her eyes, and tells her "I don't care who you were, I only care who you are now. I care a great deal." Daphne holds him close while Julia awkwardly watches.

Barnabas is at Stokes' house discussing matters over sherry. Stokes says that he can try to research whatever he can about the life of Jamieson Collins for clues to Roxanne's past, but it will take time. "But," he adds, "I did discover something that you may find interesting." Barnabas asks what, and Stokes takes out an old yellow letter. "This, Mr. Collins," says Stokes. "It's a letter signed by a Professor Phillip Anderson, of the very college I teach at now." He hands the letter to Barnabas while continuing "Look at the date on the letter. October 21, 1909. I discovered that the college had a professor of anthropology and philosophy named Phillip Anderson at the turn of the century, who suddenly vanished in 1910. No trace of him was ever found. One can assume that was when he was transformed into the vampire he is now." Barnabas tells Stokes that what he has found matches the story Quentin had heard, but that finding Anderson has not been easy. "And as long as he has loyal servants under his power, it will be difficult to destroy him using a wooden stake as we attempted before. We will need something that will also frighten his servants as well." Barnabas looks at Stokes and says "A gun. With silver bullets. Lethal to the living dead, and to the living as well." Stokes smiles and says "Exactly."

Episode 1275

Aired: Friday May 14, 1971

After a replay of Thursday's close and the titles, Quentin moves towards Carolyn, but she steps aside into another room and is gone. There is a noise from behind David, so Quentin quickly moves back towards him and tells him to "look out." David looks around, but there is nothing there. There are several more noises from all directions that rattle both Quentin and David, so Quentin grabs David's hand and quickly leads him out of the window they snuck in through.

At the old house, Barnabas, Julia, Quentin & David await the dusk with dread. Quentin hands everyone a silver cross and says that before coming back, he and David had stopped in town to "get these and other precautions." David has a bag filled with garlic, which Julia and he begin to spread around the perimeter of the house. "If the book I read was right," David explains, "it should make the entire old house a safe haven!" Julia comments on how smart David is, and the two of them begin to work outside. "I hope you don't mind all of us as house guests, Barnabas," Quentin says facetiously. "I hope David's book is correct," Barnabas says. "Though I know how strong the lust for blood can be. They might not be able to cross that threshold, but they will call upon every power they can to make us weaken. This will not be good night for sleeping." Quentin looks out the window as the sun begins to set.

It's night in the old house, and everyone is nervous. Quentin and David are trying to play chess as Barnabas reads and Julia paces. Every noise outside causes someone to react, but when dogs begin howling, they all sit up and take notice. David gets scared and says he wants to go upstairs to Josette's room where Daphne is sleeping. Quentin thinks this will be okay, and right after David goes upstairs, there is a knock at the door. Barnabas answers, and is Carolyn. "I have a message for Quentin," she says coyly. "Tell me now," Quentin snaps. "May I come in? Or are you all scared of me too? I can't get past the garlic, you'll have to move it, please." Carolyn says. Barnabas answers "You know we can't do that. You should be the one afraid, Carolyn. You are submitting to a power that could destroy you. You've got to fight it!" Carolyn brushes him off as we cut to upstairs in Josette's room. Daphne is asleep, and David is looking at Josette's portrait, but he hears some tapping at the window. He hears Roxanne's voice calling to him "David.... David...." and begins to walk, trancelike, towards the window. He starts to reach out to open it.

David is at the window, and swings it open. Roxanne is floating outside, and smiles gently at him, still calling "David.... David...." David looks at her and says "You're so pretty...." Roxanne answers "Thank you, David. I remember when someone just like you said things like that to me. So long ago. You are the image of him, David, or at least you will be in a few short years. His name was Jamieson Collins. I thought he loved me until he left me. But now you can have another chance. Do you think I'm pretty?" David, still entranced, simply nods. Roxanne smiles. "Things would have been so different if you hadn't left me, Jamieson. So different and so wonderful. Come to me now, and I will make up for all the years we've been apart...." David starts to walk towards Roxanne, but suddenly Roxanne screams and averts her eyes. David snaps out of his trance, and looks behind him to see Daphne holding the silver cross on Roxanne.

Downstairs, Barnabas and company hear the scream from upstairs. Quentin hollers "What is going on up there?" David and Daphne run downstairs. David tells Quentin how Daphne saved him from Roxanne and how he almost went to her. Daphne says that she has locked the window upstairs. Quentin looks at Carolyn angrily and snaps "Tell your master that his diversion failed. Now get out of here!" Carolyn looks confused, but then Quentin shoves her back and slams the front door. Quentin thanks Daphne for what she did, and Daphne says she's glad she did it, since it proves to her that she's free of Anderson's power. Julia is happy to hear this. Barnabas asks David if Roxanne said anything to him, and David says "I can't remember all of it, but she called me Jamieson and said that she thought I loved her. I think she thought I was my grandfather! Why would she think that?" Barnabas and Quentin look at each other, intrigued.

Episode 1274

Aired: Thursday May 13, 1971

After a replay of yesterday's close and the titles, David comes downstairs to the waiting Barnabas and Quentin. Quentin tells David he has something very important for him to do, and David wonders what. Quentin sits him down and tells him "It turns out Anderson is an old enemy of mine from a long time ago. He's come here to take revenge on the family." David asks "Was he a vampire when you first met him?" Quentin answers "No, but he did have some strange powers. He can be very dangerous, David, I want you to truly understand that before you answer the question I'm going to ask you." David looks thoughtfully at Quentin for a moment and says "You're going to ask me if I still want to help you fight him." Quentin says yes, and David stands up, saying "You know I want to help you. I've got to save my father and Carolyn and Aunt Elizabeth from him. He made them so different when I saw them at that house...so evil." Quentin tells him that he needs to show them where the house is, during the day. "I can take you there," David says, "but what if he's hiding at Collinwood? Someone should go there too!" Barnabas agrees, and says that he and Julia will search through Collinwood while trying to avoid the family, and Quentin and David can go to the house where Anderson was.

Barnabas and Julia arrive at Collinwood, and it seems empty. They enter the drawing room and find only Anderson's brandy glass sitting on the table with a small amount left in it. "I see Petofi has made himself quite at home here," Barnabas sneers. "We need to search every room in this house." Julia points out how many rooms there are, along with secret corridors and passageways, and that she "doesn't know where to begin." Barnabas suggests the basement, since it's the darkest. Meanwhile, Quentin and David are making their way through the woods towards the other house. David tells Quentin it's not too far ahead, and then asks "What will we do when we find him?" Quentin puts his hand on David's shoulder and says "You better let me handle that part, David." David starts to realize what they must do.

Back at Collinwood, a search of the basement has yielded nothing. Julia suggests a search through some of the unrestored parts of the west wing, and Barnabas says that they should also search the tower room as well, remembering how his father had secluded him there for safety "a long long time ago." Julia looks through some empty rooms in the west wing and Barnabas finds an empty tower room as well. They call to each other before meeting in the foyer, and agree that Anderson/Petofi is not at Collinwood. "It would be too obvious a place, even for a brazen man such as him," Barnabas notes. "Perhaps Quentin and David are having better luck," Julia says. Back in the woods, Quentin and David have reached the other house and are sneaking inside the same window. As they enter, they hear the noise of someone moving in the other room.

David and Quentin carefully move towards the room where they heard the noise, and David whispers that it's the same room where he saw the coffins. But when they enter, the room is empty, except for some marks on the floor that indicate that two coffins were certainly there. "We're too late," says Quentin, and then they hear the cackling laughter of Carolyn, who is standing behind them. "Yes, too late indeed!" she says. "And tonight, it will be too late for all of you!" She continues laughing as Quentin looks at her frustrated and David looks at her frightened.

Episode 1273

Aired: Wednesday May 12, 1971

Grayson Hall's voiceover: "It is night at Collinwood, a night filled with the seemingly eternal power of evil. An enemy of Quentin Collins and the entire Collins family, long thought dead, has returned in a new guise and with terrifying new powers. On this night, he has told of his chance escape from the gypsies who held him prisoner nearly a century ago, and how his escape led to twin curses of monstrous dimensions, a curse that he intends to spread further...."

We are in the Collinwood drawing room as Storm/Petofi is moving towards Quentin with his outstretched hand. Quentin is backed up against the door as we fade to black.

After the titles, Quentin is struggling with the doorknob as the laughing Storm/Petofi gets closer, but suddenly the window blows open. Both men look towards it as a cold wind rushes through the room and the lights flicker. Storm/Petofi looks around the room and demands to know "Who is it?" At that moment in front of him, Angelique's ghost appears and glares at him. "You!" he says. "Your powers are no match for mine, my dear." Angelique laughs silently and waves her hands - and the doors fly open behind Quentin. He looks out of the room and sees the front doors swinging open in the wind as well. Quentin looks towards Angelique with a smile and runs out of the house. Storm/Petofi tries to follow, but Angelique waves her hand in front of him and he is pushed back for a moment. "Death has made you stronger somehow my dear," he says. "But this battle is far from over." She fades away as Storm/Petofi looks at the open front door in frustration before waving his hand and shutting them.

Quentin has made it back to the old house and tells Barnabas and Julia that they are dealing with Petofi. Barnabas asks how, and Quentin answers "A long story, but he stole another body to escape from the gypsies long ago. The fools punished that body with the curse of the vampire, not knowing it had Petofi's soul inside." Barnabas and Julia are not happy with this development. "All that monstrous power added to what he already had," says Barnabas. "A power that corrupts and spreads evil, polluting the soul." Quentin snaps "That's assuming he had a good soul to begin with." Julia agrees, adding "Your curse changed you until you fought back Barnabas, Petofi must clearly prefer what has happened to him." Barnabas smiles for a moment, but then thinks and says "But what of Roxanne? What has it done to her?" Julia says she doesn't know. "Perhaps she is under Petofi's control," Barnabas says, but Quentin answers that if he followed Petofi's story correctly, Roxanne was cursed separately and not by Petofi himself, which means that she may be acting completely on her own. Barnabas is not thrilled with this theory.

Barnabas is looking out the window, and says that it will be dawn soon, and that they can try to find Petofi's hiding place during the day. Quentin tells Barnabas that he's been thinking about some of the things Petofi has said, like referring to himself as a "prisoner of the night" as opposed to its master. "I'm not sure he is so happy with the fate he has been dealt," says Quentin. Barnabas answers that Petofi's evil has no other possibilities other than creating more evil, for himself and others. "I know, I know, the fault lies not in our stars but in ourselves, right Barnabas?" jokes Quentin. Julia asks Quentin what he thinks Petofi's plans are, and Quentin is not sure. "Revenge is the only thing I can think of. The last time he touched me with that hand I aged several lifetimes. Perhaps he saw me now after all these years and wanted to make me like that for all eternity. If Angelique's spirit hadn't intervened, he may have succeeded." The mention of Angelique makes Barnabas a bit melancholy, though he asks Quentin if she said anything to him. Quentin says she didn't, all she did was open the doors. "If she has more power than Petofi," says Julia, "she may prove to be a valuable ally."

It is daylight, and Barnabas and Quentin are ready to find Petofi's hiding place. Quentin doesn't think he would be at Collinwood now, but Barnabas says it's the only lead they have. Quentin says "That's not true. There was the house that David found. There may be a clue there, if not Petofi or Roxanne themselves." Barnabas agrees, and says they should wake David and get him to tell them exactly where the house is. Quentin looks at Barnabas and says "It's daylight and it's safe. I think he should just show us himself."

Episode 1272

Aired: Tuesday May 11, 1971

After a replay of Monday's closing scene and the titles, we are back in Petofi's cell as James Storm grabs Roxanne and tells her to "Stay quiet, my dear. If you want to get out of here alive, you will have to trust Petofi." Roxanne is confused, until Thayer David cries out "Roxanne! He is me! He has stolen my body somehow! The ring! Take off the ring!" Hearing this, James Storm knocks Thayer David down hard, and Roxanne screams. As she starts to run out of the cell, she suddenly faces an angry King Leonard and several large gypsies.

Storm/Petofi and Roxanne are in a different cell, being held by the gypsies. Roxanne pleads with King Leonard that her fiancee is not who he seems, but the gypsies ignore her, telling her that they "cannot trust two people who are full of lies." They are then marched outside, to be shown that they "have come here for nothing." Outside, Thayer David is tied to a pole above a pyre. Several gypsies stand around with lit torches. Storm/Petofi looks upon this with some interest, as Thayer David screams for Roxanne to help him somehow. King Leonard announces that whatever secrets of immortality Petofi had will now "die along with him" as he signals the gypsies and they light the pyre. Thayer David screams as he is consumed by the flames. Roxanne looks away in a mixture of screams and tears, but Storm/Petofi watches with a small grin.

Storm/Petofi and Roxanne are back in a cell together, with the gypsies undoing their chains. Storm/Petofi starts to try to talk his way out with King Leonard, apologizing for breaking into Petofi's cell and trying to "obtain secrets that he has no right to." He offers apologies in return for being let go, and the gypsies ignore him. "What will it take? Money? Wealth? Perhaps the woman! Name your price!" he says in frustration, but the gypsies ignore him. Roxanne is horrified at his last suggestion, to say the least. King Leonard summons a gypsy in who is carrying an ornate wooden box. King Leonard looks at Storm/Petofi and Roxanne and says "You came here in search of immortality. And you shall have it. But you shall have it in a form that you will not be pleased with." The gypsies leave the box and exit the cell. Roxanne looks at Storm/Petofi and angrily says "What are you anyway? You have killed my fiancee!" Storm/Petofi says "My dear, we have greater things to worry about now. We must not open that box." Roxanne snarls "No, YOU must not!" as she walks over to the box and opens the lid. Storm/Petofi steps back a moment, but then Roxanne says "There's nothing in it!" and laughs at him. But then, slowly getting louder, we hear the squealing and squeaking of.... the two bats that come flying out of the box, biting both Storm/Petofi and Roxanne in the neck as they scream in terror.

Back at Collinwood, Anderson/Petofi is telling Quentin this story, finishing with "When I awoke this time, I was in the woods hundreds of miles away. I discovered I had been held prisoner by the gypsies for thirteen years, for the year was 1910. Roxanne was gone. I was made a prisoner of the eternal night, the punishment meted out by the gypsies to one they thought was a naive and stupid man in search of Petofi's secrets." "If only they had known you were Petofi," says Quentin, "they might have put you up on that burning pyre and done the world a favor!" Anderson/Petofi sneers and answers "I did you a great favor, Quentin. I told you many of the things you will need to know in the future." Anderson/Petofi takes a step towards Quentin, but Quentin steps back. Anderson/Petofi waves his hands, and all the doors and windows in the room shut tight. "And now I need to touch you, Quentin..." he says as he gets nearer and nearer to Quentin , who is backed up against the drawing room doors, "with the hand of Petofi...."

Episode 1271

Aired: Monday May 10, 1971

Donna Wandrey's voiceover: "A dark night at Collinwood, where an enemy thought long dead has returned to claim revenge against a member of the Collins family. A man who commands immense powers of evil, who has somehow transformed his identity to spread that evil among those who live at the great house. On this night, he will reveal many things to his intended victim, Quentin Collins, but will make sure to retain many secrets of the past, secrets that can be as lethal as any other dangerous weapon...."

Anderson/Petofi stands laughing at Quentin before Quentin yells at him to "shut up already" and tell him what he wants. Anderson/Petofi smiles and says "I simply want you to understand what is happening, my dear Quentin!" Quentin raises an eyebrow.

After the titles, Anderson/Petofi sips a brandy and starts to tell Quentin what happened to him after 1897. "There was a time I would have preferred to die in Tate's studio," he says, "but fate had other things in store for me." We dissolve to Petofi (Thayer David) trapped in Tate's burning studio in 1897. He cannot get out among the burning oil paintings. He yells for help, but a large burning canvas falls near him, and he crashes to the ground. His glasses come off and skid across the floor. As Petofi gropes for them, he comes upon two large boots, and as we pan up, we see that it's none other than the leader of some scary looking gypsies. They look down at Petofi with a sneer, knock him on the head, and then tie his hands. We hear Anderson continue "The gypsies had a new King, Leonard, who was immune to my powers. And they took full advantage of my weakness." King Leonard (Michael McGuire) exits beyond some flames and a broken down door as the gypsies drag the unconscious Petofi behind them out of the studio. We pan through the flames to see that they left his glasses behind.

Petofi is chained to a wall in a small dark cell. Outside, we hear the music of a gypsy camp. Anderson/Petofi voiceovers "When I awoke, I was a prisoner at the mercy of the gypsies, once again. They had prevented me from calling upon my powers. While I was at their mercy, they tortured me, and held me for years. They slowly exacted revenge for the death of their King Johnny. I lost track of time after a while, after they dragged me from place to place, wherever they would encamp. I thought I would lose my mind." A gypsy throws some awful looking food into the cell which Petofi crawls to and downs voraciously. "Immortality can be a living hell when one loses control of one's fate, Mr. Collins," the voiceover continues. "But fate would not allow such a destiny for me." Outside the camp, we see two people dressed in Edwardian clothes arriving with a map, looking over the gypsy camp. King Leonard approaches them and says "You don't know how to take no for an answer!" before laughing heartily. "But your woman is beautiful! Maybe I will change my mind! Please, come in! Drink with us!" They enter and follow King Leonard - and they are James Storm and Donna Wandrey.

Petofi's flashback continues as Storm and Wandrey have a drink with King Leonard. Storm says he knows who their prisoner is, and of his powers. He looks to the woman and says "Roxanne, show the King of the gypsies how much we are willing to pay to visit with their prisoner." She shows King Leonard a large roll of money, but King Leonard says he cannot allow anyone to see Petofi, since Petofi might use the opportunity to escape. Storm counters that he has researched Petofi and knows that he holds the secret to immortality, and insists on finding out about his power. Roxanne waxes over being "young and beautiful forever" and how her "and her fiancee, Professor Anderson" wish to learn this secret from Petofi. King Leonard still refuses, and Roxanne begins to move closer to him. As she distracts him by asking about his jewelry and flirting, Anderson sneaks something into King Leonard's drink. After a toast, King Leonard passes out and Roxanne lifts the keys to the prison from him before she and Anderson leave the tent.

Petofi squints at the light as Anderson and Roxanne enter his cell. "You are Count Andreas Petofi, are you not?" Anderson asks. Petofi nods weakly. "I will help you escape from this place." he says. Petofi grabs his arm and says "Why have you come here? Who are you?" Anderson stops a moment, and says "I have come so that you can help me. I'll only take you out of here if you tell me your secret of immortality." Petofi laughs, and Roxanne asks him what is so funny. "Is that all you want, young man? How little you ask for, I feel I should give you something as a gift besides that." We cut back to Quentin in Collinwood listening to this, as he looks at Anderson/Petofi and sneers "You gave him your ring." Anderson/Petofi smiles, and we see the ring on his finger as he sips the brandy as we dissolve back to Petofi's cell as Anderson is putting the ring on and admiring it. He looks to Roxanne as suddenly he starts to swoon a bit, and Petofi's face goes from a smile to sudden confusion. James Storm is smiling now as Thayer David cries out "Roxanne! What has he done to me?" James Storm looks on him and laughs.

Episode 1270

Aired: Friday May 7, 1971

After a replay of Thursday's closing conversation and the titles, Quentin and Barnabas begin to discuss why this may be happening. "What could it be that makes Anderson seek revenge on the family? We don't even know who he is!" says Quentin. Barnabas remarks that they have no idea of knowing how old Anderson is, or how far in the past his grudge lies. Quentin laughs and thinks about all the unknown enemies a family like the Collinses may have, and how he had always heard the family was cursed while growing up. Barnabas says "I refuse to believe in fate as the cause for things. I've learned my own actions have a far greater effect good or bad than any unseen forces. I have always agreed with the Shakespeare, 'the fault lies not in our stars, but in ourselves.'" Quentin smiles and answers "But my star shines brightest of all." and laughs a little. Barnabas is confused at this remark, and Quentin answers "The prep school headmaster quoted that Shakespeare line to me once, while disciplining me for drinking in the dormitory. I answered him the way I answered you, and it led to my expulsion. I'll never forget that. My father was furious with me." David steps off the stairway, hearing the end of the conversation and says "What about my father? We have to save him."

Quentin assures David that they will save Roger, Liz & Carolyn, just as they have helped Daphne. David isn't so sure, but Julia comes downstairs and tells him that if Daphne can be broken from Anderson, then his father can as well. She leads him back upstairs as Barnabas tells Quentin they had best hide his portrait in the basement, since David can't know all of the secret vaults and trick walls down there. They take the covered portrait from the secret room and head down the basement with it.

Quentin and Barnabas are in Adam's old cell. Quentin looks around and is skeptical of the room, but Barnabas pushes open the wall segment where some jewelry is hidden, and tells Quentin that the painting should fit in there nicely. Barnabas starts to sift through Josette's jewelry when he finds a diamond ring. "How did this get in there..." he wonders aloud. Quentin looks at the ring and says "It looks like it belongs with the rest of it," but Barnabas answers. "No. This is the ring my mother gave to Angelique..." At that moment, there is a glowing light in the corner of the room. Angelique appears to them.

David is looking out the window when he shouts for Julia. Julia comes to him, and David tells him that the lights just came on at Collinwood, and that someone must be back there. Down in Adam's cell, Barnabas is asking Angelique to help them "Please, tell us more if you know more," he pleads. She points to the covered portrait, which Quentin picks up and looks at. It starts to blur as he turns, taking our view of it away. Angelique seems to be straining as she changes the portrait, but Quentin is growing more horrified as he looks at it. Barnabas asks "What is it? as he moves to see. Quentin hands it to him and says "Take a look," before heading upstairs. Barnabas looks at the portrait and is agape with shock as Angelique looks on.

Quentin is putting on his coat as Julia asks where he is going. "I'm going to Collinwood. Anderson is there." Julia tells him it's too dangerous, and David asks him if he will save his father. Quentin looks at them and says "It's me he wants. I know that now. I have to face him. Barnabas will explain." He leaves as Julia heads downstairs to find Barnabas. Julia calls to Barnabas and finds him in Adam's cell. When she walks in, she is shocked to see Angelique's ghost. Barnabas calms her and says "It's all right, she is here to help." Julia says that Quentin has left for Collinwood to face Anderson, and asks why. Barnabas tells her to look at the portrait. Meanwhile, Quentin angrily enters Collinwood, slamming the door. He walks through the foyer to the drawing room, where Anderson stands by the fireplace sipping a brandy. "So, Anderson, if that's what you want to be called now, you want my portrait, do you?" Quentin says. Anderson glibly answers "I want much more than that, my boy. But you will find that out in due time. Look at you, Quentin Collins, you are a remarkable piece of work. My work, really. You look exactly the same as I remember you." Quentin sneers. "You might look different after all these years, but deep down inside you have the same foul and rotten soul, don't you.... Count Petofi." Anderson laughs as we dissolve from his laughing face to the portrait, which has become the Thayer David Petofi before dissolving back into the aging Quentin. As Angelique vanishes and Barnabas and Julia watch the portrait change, we dissolve back to the laughing Anderson.

Episode 1269

Aired: Thursday May 6, 1971

After a replay of Wednesday's close and the titles, Anderson switches on the light to see who is there, but David ducks around a corner in time. David carefully moves back towards the window where he came in. He moves through the darkened room towards the window, but the lights suddenly come on and Anderson is glaring at him. David freezes, and Anderson looks him over with a sneer. "So, my boy. You have followed me. Well, congratulations. Have you found what you wanted?" He moves towards David who backs away while telling Anderson to stay away. "What are you afraid of? In a moment, you will trust me more than your greatest friend," says Anderson as he moves closer to David. David is backed up against a doorway as Anderson gets closer, but suddenly, David takes a silver cross from out of his pocket and shines it in Anderson's eyes. Anderson screams and looks away as David nervously shouts "I know what you are! I'm not afraid of you!"

David is managing to hold Anderson at bay as Anderson yells "You will pay for this boy, you will pay dearly!" David moves back towards the window holding the cross on Anderson when suddenly from behind him comes Roxanne, fangs out and hissing. David spins around and manages to wave the cross in front of her, causing her to scream and move away from the window. David is growing more confident now, though he still wants to get out. He is about to start climbing through the window when the door he was near opens, and Roger enters the room David calls to him "Father! Watch out! They'll get you!" but all Roger does is angrily look at David and shout "David! Put down that cross this instant!" David shakes his head in disbelief as his father approaches him, demanding he drop the cross. "No father," he tearfully says, but then Liz and Carolyn enter the room from a different side and also demand David drop the cross. As his family moves towards him, a terrified David gives the cross a wide wave, pushing everyone back long enough for him to scamper through the window and back out into the woods. Anderson looks out the window angrily and declares "That interfering brat will now be the key to everything I want."

At the old house, Barnabas and Quentin are returning from the mausoleum room with Quentin's portrait, looking for a better hiding place when they hear David shouting to them. They hurriedly place the portrait in the secret room behind the bookcase when David runs in, frantic. Quentin asks him what's happened and where he's been, and David tells them that he followed Anderson and knows where he's hiding. Barnabas tells him that was a very dangerous and stupid thing to do, but David snaps back that he defended himself fine. Quentin says "Defended yourself? What happened?" David tells Quentin and Barnabas how he warded Anderson and Roxanne off with a silver cross, "just like what I read about in Carolyn's books. But then my father came in..." Barnabas interrupts "Roger? Roger was there?" David answers "Aunt Elizabeth and Carolyn too! He's got them all under his power! They tried to take my cross so he could get me too, but I wouldn't let them. I wouldn't let them!" Quentin takes his shoulders and says "I won't let them either, David. You did well tonight." He looks over towards Barnabas while he continues "You did a foolhardy thing by running after Anderson, but you may have helped us all a great deal. I'm proud of you." David gives Quentin a hug. Barnabas suggests that David go upstairs and rest after being through such an experience. David nods, and Barnabas looks at him and says "I'm proud of you too, David" before David smiles and goes upstairs.

Quentin tells Barnabas that Anderson will only move his hiding place again now that David has discovered it, and Barnabas responds that Angelique was right, since David is now in very grave danger. "It's me he wants," Quentin says. Barnabas asks why, and Quentin says "I don't know, but I'm going to find out."

Episode 1268

Aired: Wednesday May 5, 1971

The sun rises as Barnabas watches and contemplates having to destroy that which he once was. "Perhaps they are consumed with the affliction as I was," he thinks to himself "hating themselves during every moment of consciousness. How many nights did I long to see a sunrise like this..." He turns from the window looking more determined. "No," he thinks. "Daphne said that Anderson wanted revenge on the family, that he wanted to destroy it. That kind of evil must not deserve any sympathy, it must not!" Julia has gotten her coat and asks if Barnabas is ready to go look for Anderson's hiding place. Barnabas grimly says yes.

After the titles, Daphne is sitting in the old house when David comes downstairs. She calls him over, and he apologizes for running away, though Daphne says she understands. David asks why, and Daphne says that David should stay away from the people at Collinwood until Quentin, Barnabas and Julia "make everything all right again." David proudly says he knows that, and that he will help them. Daphne asks him how he'll do that, and David says he doesn't know, but he'll know what to do when the time comes.

Barnabas and Julia have met up with Stokes, who has Anderson's known address. They are on the way to Anderson's house, and Stokes has brought silver crosses, and a wooden stake & hammer. The sight of these things causes a mixed reaction in Barnabas. He carefully handles the wooden stake and seems to be wondering about all the "roads not taken" as Stokes watches him curiously. "Are you growing fearful, Barnabas?" asks Stokes, jarring Barnabas from his thoughts. "No," he says. "I was just wondering if one is destined to be evil, or makes a choice to do evil." Stokes laughs a little, and says "The time for such contemplations is a luxury when you are battling evil." Julia agrees and says that they should go. Back at the old house, David asks Daphne why Anderson hates the family so much, and she says she doesn't know. She also doesn't know where he is. David says that there must be a way of finding out. "Haven't you ever followed him?" he asks, and she says no. David thinks a moment.

Barnabas, Stokes & Julia have broken into what Stokes assumes is Anderson's house. It looks lived in, but no one is there. They look around and find some things associated with Anderson, and then Julia calls the two men over to look at a small room. The windows of the room have all been painted black and are covered with thick curtains as well. "This must be it" Julia says, but Barnabas says "We are too late" as we pull back to see the marks in the floor that show that 2 coffins were once there, but not anymore.

At night, Barnabas and Julia return to the old house and find Daphne asleep. They ask her where David is, and she says he must be upstairs. When Barnabas calls him, he does not answer. "Where could he be?" says Barnabas, and then Daphne mentions her conversation with David where David mused about following Anderson. Barnabas is not thrilled with this prospect, and takes Julia aside to tell her that if David is put under Anderson's influence, he could reveal where Quentin's portrait is since David knows of the secret room. We cut to David hiding in the woods outside Collinwood, watching Anderson leaving. David begins to follow him and we hear him think "I'll find out where you hide."

David continues to follow Anderson through the woods, until they come to an old abandoned house along the seashore. Anderson heads inside, and David begins to wander around the outside. He finds a side window slightly open, and then sneaks into the house after taking a look. Inside the abandoned house, David follows some footsteps, moving very carefully, but then notices a door off to a large room. He looks inside and sees two coffins, side by side. He gasps, and suddenly he hears Anderson from the other side of the room call "Who is that? Who's there?"

Episode 1267

Aired: Tuesday May 4, 1971

After a repeat of yesterday's close and the titles, Quentin accuses Daphne of working against the Collins family. She denies this, saying she'd never hurt David and that she was really coming to warn him. Quentin is skeptical, but Julia leads her inside and asks her if she wants to be free from Anderson and Roxanne's influence. "If you help us," Julia says, "you can get your life back." But Daphne gets frightened and says "I don't remember what that life was!"

Quentin asks Daphne to explain what she means, and Daphne tells him that she has no memory of who she was or what she was before she was working for Anderson. Quentin asks her if she thinks Anderson's powers erased her memory, but Daphne isn't sure. Barnabas says there may be a way of finding out, and suggests Julia hypnotize her to see if she will remember anything at all when placed in a trance. Julia asks Daphne if this is okay, and Daphne is frightened, though when Quentin tells her that he'd rather have her as an ally than an enemy, she agrees and Julia takes her trusty medallion from out of her purse.

Julia puts Daphne into a trance to get her to remember her past, and whatever else about Anderson's plans she may know but cannot reveal consciously while under his power. Julia asks her when she first met Professor Anderson and Daphne says she can't remember, but that "he wants to destroy the Collins family." Julia asks why, and all Daphne says is "Revenge. He wants revenge." This answer confuses Barnabas, and he pressures Julia to ask more about Anderson. Daphne gets frightened and says she cannot answer or she will die. Barnabas pressures more, and Julia tries to put Daphne into a deeper trance. Daphne goes into a deep sleep, but before Julia can ask any more questions, Daphne suddenly opens her eyes, looks at Quentin and smiles. "Quentin! There you are! You must get ready for your conference at the university." Quentin looks confused as Daphne walks to him. Julia tells Barnabas that she is still under. Daphne starts to straighten Quentin's clothes while saying "Such strange clothing, even for a group of eccentric scientists. I think you should change, say goodbye to Tad and be on your way." Quentin is confused, but Barnabas looks at her and simply says "Tad!"

Julia leads Daphne back to her seat and asks her who she is, and the answer is "Daphne Harridge Collins. Don't you remember, Julia? It's so good to see you here in New York. I thought you returned to England with your brother Barnabas." Barnabas looks at her and says "No, I am here." and then slowly asks "What year is this?" Daphne laughs, and replies "What an odd question!" "Please answer me, " Barnabas says. Daphne answers "1847, of course." Barnabas looks at Julia and excitedly says "Is it really her? Or perhaps a reincarnation?" Julia says she doesn't know how to explain it, and Quentin asks to know what's going on. Barnabas looks at him and says "You are the image of your namesake, just as she is the image of Daphne Harridge Collins. I think she and your namesake's wife are one in the same." Quentin looks at Daphne, who smiles back at him innocently.

Julia is bringing Daphne out of her trance with some post-hypnotic suggestion to resist Anderson's control over her. Daphne nods that she will, and then Julia tells her to sleep until she snaps her fingers. Barnabas stops her a moment and tells her that they still haven't found anything out about how to free the family. Quentin snaps "Isn't it obvious? We must destroy Anderson and Roxanne." Barnabas has pangs of guilt over Roxanne, and Julia suggests that perhaps destroying Anderson will free Roxanne as well as the family. Barnabas is doubtful, and says he agrees with Quentin. Julia snaps her fingers and Daphne wakes up, asking if they have learned anything. Quentin takes her hand and only says "A great deal" before kissing it.

Episode 1266

Aired: Monday May 3, 1971

Quentin and Barnabas return to the old house and find that David is there with Julia. Barnabas innocently asks him why he is visiting, and Julia says "Tell him" to David. David looks at Barnabas and says "There's something wrong with my father. There's something wrong with everyone at Collinwood!" Barnabas is concerned as we cut to the titles.

Barnabas asks David what he means, and David tells of Roger's odd behavior when it came to sending him away to boarding school. Barnabas dismisses this as Roger merely changing his mind, but David persists. He tells Quentin that Carolyn and his Aunt were searching all over the house for keys, while "making sure you weren't around. I didn't know what they were doing, and I was afraid of asking them." Quentin asks David why he was afraid, and David says that Carolyn and his Aunt have been inviting Professor Anderson over "a lot" and there's something "creepy" about him. Julia asks David if Anderson has done anything to frighten him, and all David can say is "I don't know, but it seems like everyone there does whatever he wants! It's like he has some kind of power over them." Quentin and Barnabas look at each other.

David begs Barnabas not to go back to Collinwood, and reminds him that there are plenty of rooms upstairs. "I used to explore all over this house when I was little, before you arrived." he says. Barnabas looks at Julia, then Quentin, and tells David that he can stay as long as he likes, and that he should go upstairs and find a "suitable room." Happy, David runs upstairs. Quentin looks at Barnabas and snaps "Why don't we just tell him the truth? You heard him, he's not little anymore. It's time we leveled with him." Barnabas tells Quentin "Don't be ridiculous." Quentin answers "By the time I was his age, I'd already smoked my first cigar and taken my first drink (there's a big surprise!). He's ready for the truth." Barnabas looks at his portrait and says "I know how you feel. By the time I was David's age, my father had already taken me on business voyages to the sugar islands. But times were different then, childhood had to be shorter. People didn't live as long." Quentin faces Barnabas and answers "No one has lived longer than us, Barnabas. That's supposed to make us wise." Barnabas turns away in thought, and Julia chimes in "Perhaps we should tell him, Barnabas. He could prove to be a valuable help to us." Barnabas asks how, and Julia explains that since everyone would still think of David as too young to be taken seriously, he could prove to be a valuable ally in finding things out without arousing suspicion. Barnabas is starting to consider this when David appears on the stairs. Quentin notices him, and asks him how long he's been there. David answers "Long enough."

David tells Barnabas that he wants to help, and that it's obvious to him now that Barnabas, Quentin and Julia knew of the strange happenings at Collinwood before he came to tell them. Quentin sits David down and tells him that they did know, but they didn't want to tell David because they feared for his safety. David insists he can take care of himself and that Anderson doesn't frighten him. Barnabas smiles at his bravado, but tells David that the strange things happening at Collinwood may involve powers that are stronger than "any of us." David asks him if he means the occult, because "I've read all about that in Carolyn's books, and I know all sorts of ways to fight stuff like that." Quentin smiles and tells David that he can help, but only when asked by himself, Julia, or Barnabas. David nods an okay, and Quentin sends him back upstairs. Quentin looks at Barnabas and says "He used to remind me of Jameison. Lately he reminds me of myself, ready to jump into anything without looking first." Julia tells Quentin she thinks David will be all right when there is a knock at the door. The three of them look at each other wondering who it could be, when Quentin answers the door. It's Daphne, who has come from Collinwood looking for David.

Quentin tells Daphne he hasn't seen David, but she enters and says she saw him coming this way. Quentin closes the door and asks why she wants to see him. She turns away from him and becomes evasive, but he turns her by the shoulders to face him and he sternly says "I won't let you or your master harm that boy" right before he pulls her scarf from her neck revealing two vampire bite wounds. Daphne cowers from Quentin as Barnabas and Julia look on.

Episode 1265

Aired: Friday April 30, 1971

After a repeat of Thursday's close and the titles, Barnabas and Quentin stand in the secret mausoleum room with Angelique's ghost in front of them. Barnabas calls out to her, but all she does is smile and not answer. She looks over to Quentin curiously, and he attempts to communicate with her. When he calls her by name, she looks confused. "Why doesn't she know me?" he wonders. Barnabas reminds him that this Angelique died in 1840 without ever meeting him, after history was changed, "though perhaps you remind her of your namesake." Barnabas looks lovingly at Angelique. "I have missed you, " he says as he approaches her. He takes her hand to kiss it, but sadly looks at her and says "Your hand.....so cold. How I wish you could be with me again..." Quentin breaks the mood by asking "Why do you think she's here?" Barnabas looks at her and asks "Can you tell us nothing?" Though she does not speak, Angelique points towards Quentin's portrait with her free hand.

Back at Collinwood, Carolyn is searching the drawing room desk when Liz enters. "I still haven't found it," she tells Carolyn. "Professor Anderson will not be happy," Carolyn answers, to which Liz sadly says "I know." There is a knock at the front door, and when Liz answers it, it's Anderson. He steps in and looks around with a sneer. "I sense you have been unsuccessful at the task I have given you," he says. Liz apologizes, and says they have searched everywhere but cannot find the key anywhere. Anderson shrugs and says "No matter. Show me where the door is."

Liz and Carolyn lead Anderson to the attic door. Liz tells him that "that door is solid oak. No man could break it down." Anderson smiles and says "I am far from an ordinary man." He puts his hand on the knob and gives it a turn, then with a burst of strength, yanks it right out of the door. He drops the broken latch and swings the door open. Anderson heads upstairs with Liz and Carolyn as Carolyn asks "What did you need to come up here for anyway? I don't think anyone has been up here in years." Anderson reaches the attic and sees the empty easel standing alone. "It appears I have come up here for nothing, my dear. Nothing at all." With a frown we haven't seen from James Storm since he played Gerard's 1995 ghost, he angrily knocks the easel over with a swing of his hand. Carolyn and Liz look confused.

Back at the mausoleum, Barnabas is still trying to communicate with Angelique's ghost, but she continues to point at Quentin's covered portrait. "What have you come to tell us, Angelique?" asks Barnabas. Angelique makes a gesture to lift the cover off the portrait. Quentin understands, and removes the cloth, revealing the old decaying figure. "What is it?" asks Barnabas. "Why can't you speak to me...." he says in frustration, but Angelique points towards the portrait with both hands, and the image of decaying Quentin begins to blur. "Barnabas!" Quentin shouts. "Look!" As the two men look at the portrait, it blurs and gradually becomes a portrait of David Collins. Barnabas and Quentin wonder what this means as the portrait blurs and becomes the image of a skeleton. "David!" shouts Barnabas, as the portrait blurs some more and becomes the aged Quentin once again. Barnabas looks at Angelique and frantically asks her what it means, but Angelique looks very tired, and begins to fade away. "No, don't leave me," Barnabas pleads, but Angelique vanishes. "The meaning is unmistakable," says Barnabas. Quentin thinks a moment and then replies "I know. David's life is in danger. What else could it mean?" Barnabas and Quentin look at each other.

Episode 1264

Aired: Thursday April 29, 1971

After a repeat of Wednesday's close and the titles, Barnabas tells Quentin that no one besides Julia knows about Quentin's portrait and where it is "safely hidden." Quentin can't think of any other reason for "such curiosity about that attic." Barnabas wonders aloud what Anderson could possibly want with Quentin's portrait, even if he did somehow know about it. Quentin thinks Anderson may need it to take over Collinwood. "After all, it keeps me from my curse and from aging. Perhaps it would also keep me from falling under the vampire's influence. But if he had the portrait, he could use it to try to control me." Barnabas nods in agreement, and decides that Quentin must somehow get the portrait out of Collinwood so that they can hide it in "a safe place that none of them know about." Quentin is interested.

Quentin and Barnabas go to Collinwood. Roger greets Barnabas, but looks over Quentin in a strange way. Barnabas asks Roger where Liz and Carolyn are, and Roger says that they have gone out. Barnabas asks Roger to join him in the study for a business discussion that "frankly, Quentin, may leave you somewhat bored." Quentin agrees and heads upstairs as Barnabas leads a somewhat reluctant Roger to the study. Barnabas stops a moment to look back at Quentin with a smile.

Quentin unlocks the door to the attic and heads up the staircase. His portrait sits on an easel with a cloth covering it. Quentin lifts the cloth for a moment, and we see the image of an aged and decaying Quentin on the canvas. He takes a long sigh contemplating his strange fate, and then covers it with the cloth again before taking it off the easel and down the steps. Back in the study, Roger and Barnabas are sipping some sherry while Barnabas asks Roger about the possibilities of investing in "various properties along the coast" in Collinsport. Roger scoffs at the notion, reminding Barnabas how many houses along the rocky coast have "sat empty for years, nary a buyer in sight." Roger recommends that Barnabas stay away from such ventures, and Barnabas thanks him for his advice, and says he will "concentrate on his business ventures in England for the time being." As Roger starts to leave the study, Barnabas starts noticing various objects and paintings in the room and badgers Roger about them, trying to buy Quentin more time. Roger is delayed somewhat, but manages to get out of the study ahead of Barnabas. Quentin is coming down the steps with the portrait when he hears Roger and Barnabas approaching, and freezes.

As Barnabas and Roger approach, Quentin takes the portrait and heads back through the hallway doors, right before Roger enters the foyer. Barnabas is still trying to stall him, but Roger starts heading upstairs, telling Barnabas he is tired and Barnabas can let himself out. Barnabas looks up the stairs for a moment, worrying about Quentin, when he hears a sound from the drawing room. In the drawing room, Quentin has come in through the secret panel from the west wing with the portrait. Barnabas tells him the coast is clear, and the two of them leave Collinwood in a hurry with the portrait.

At the Eagle Hill mausoleum, Quentin and Barnabas enter with the portrait. Barnabas tells Quentin that it should be safe in the secret room, and opens the door by pulling on the ring. They bring the portrait inside, but then Barnabas says he feels a cold wind. Quentin says he doesn't feel anything, and then Barnabas looks up and sees a glowing light. The light gets bigger, and from the center of it appears Angelique.

Episode 1263

Aired: Wednesday April 28, 1971

Quentin and Julia are bringing Barnabas up to date on what they have discovered. They wonder why Anderson has targeted the Collins family. "Perhaps it's because I imprisoned Roxanne," Barnabas surmises. "Perhaps," says Quentin, "but I suppose we'll never know.... until we find him ask him." They look at each other considering the prospect of facing Anderson.

After the titles, Quentin has returned to Collinwood and finds Daphne in the drawing room. She is happy to see him, but he is now suspicious of her. He asks her how much she knows about Professor Anderson, and she answers that Anderson had no problem with her leaving her previous position to work at Collinwood. "I'm sure he didn't," answers Quentin. Daphne is unsure why Quentin is acting this way. "It's been very warm in Collinsport recently," Quentin suddenly says. "Unseasonable for such a rainy and stormy place." Daphne agrees, and then Quentin suddenly asks her if she always wears turtleneck sweaters in such warm weather. Daphne looks at him scared.

Daphne tells Quentin he is not acting like himself, and excuses herself from the room. Quentin tries to follow her, but bumps into Carolyn. He apologizes, but Carolyn looks off towards the stairs while leading Quentin back into the drawing room. She starts to make small talk while Quentin continues to try to follow Daphne. Quentin asks Carolyn why she's keeping him there, something Carolyn slyly denies. Quentin gets by her and goes upstairs to Daphne's room, and finds it locked. He is about to knock at her door when he hears noises coming from down the hall.

Quentin goes down the hall and hears some voices coming from around the corner. He peeks around, and sees Liz and Roger trying various keys in a door. Quentin hears footsteps behind him, and ducks into a closet. It's Carolyn, who moves to Roger and Liz as they try more keys. Liz can't understand it since she thought she had every key to every room in the house. Carolyn tells her that they need to get into the attic since "it must be there. We've looked everywhere else." They continue to try keys as Quentin takes a key ring out of his pocket and fingers a particular key while looking very concerned.

Quentin has returned to the old house and tells Barnabas about what has happened. Barnabas tells him that it will be sundown soon and that they can try to track down Anderson if he is active. "Perhaps if Roxanne returns to Collinwood, we can follow her at dawn if they are together," suggests Barnabas. Quentin says that he thinks Anderson is planning on returning to Collinwood himself. "How do you know that?" asks Barnabas. Quentin takes out his key ring and says "Because he's got the family looking for this. The key to the west wing attic... where my portrait is." Barnabas is surprised.

Episode 1262

Aired: Tuesday April 27, 1971

After a repeat of Monday's close and the titles, we are at the Blue Whale. Sebastian is at the bar, drinking and looking depressed when Quentin and Julia enter. Quentin walks to the bar and tells Sebastian they need to talk. Sebastian remarks that "all I need to do is drink." Quentin buys him a drink and says "Now you can drink and we can talk." Sebastian tells him there's nothing to talk about. Julia tells him it concerns Roxanne and is very important. Sebastian tells her "You're asking the wrong man," before "hmphing" and going back to his drink. Quentin spins him around on his stool and grabs him by the collar saying "Well Shaw, then tell me who the right man is."

At the college, Stokes is coming out of his office when he sees Julia, Quentin and Sebastian. He says hello, and Quentin asks if Professor Anderson is around. Stokes says he isn't, but should back later that evening, "though I haven't seen him in some time. I do hope he is not ill." Sebastian looks nervous for a moment, and gets even antiser when Quentin starts asking Stokes how much he knows about Anderson and what his background is. Stokes tells Quentin that while Anderson has only been with the college a few months, his references were "impeccable." Quentin tells Stokes that he suspects Anderson knows more about Roxanne than he's letting on. Stokes puts his monocle in and says "Really?"

In Stokes' office, Stokes has been brought up to date by Quentin and Julia, and now knows that Sebastian was once Roxanne's servant. Sebastian claims that Roxanne no longer has any kind of hold on him. Quentin tells him he's certainly acting like a person under someone's power, and Sebastian gets evasive. Quentin grows more menacing to Sebastian as he tells him he knows he's hiding something, and if it endangers the Collins family or Daphne, he'll be very sorry, "very very sorry indeed, Shaw." Sebastian laughs at the notion of Daphne being in danger, and Quentin grabs him by the collar and asks him what he means by that. Sebastian answers "Ask Anderson."

Quentin lets Sebastian go, and Sebastian says "Yes, Anderson. There, I said it! I can't let him have power over me!" Julia says "Him?" and Sebastian tells them that Anderson has some kind of power over Roxanne, but he's not sure how much. When they press him on what kind of power, Sebastian admits that Anderson is "one of them" and that he could "prove" the connection with the photograph he discovered among Roxanne's things, but Anderson forced him to turn it over. Quentin and Julia think about the likelihood that Anderson is really controlling Carolyn, Roger and now Liz, and Stokes tells Sebastian that he will research Anderson's background to try to "hunt him down" since "If what Mr. Shaw says is true, he will surely never return here."

Episode 1261

Aired: Monday April 26, 1971

Quentin returns to Collinwood later that night and finds Liz having a drink in the drawing room. He remarks how he's never seen her up this late before, and she snaps at him "What exactly do you mean by that?" He raises an eyebrow as we cut to the titles.

Liz apologizes to Quentin for her behavior, and tells him it's been a "trying day." When Quentin asks why, Liz explains how Roger had changed his mind about sending David away, and how she has hired a new governess. Quentin asks when he will get to meet this woman, and Liz tells him he already has, since she has hired Daphne. "Daphne?" Quentin says, surprised. "I thought you'd be pleased most of all," answers Liz. "since you have already become friends with her. I thought you could help to familiarize her with Collinwood." "I'm not sure how I feel about all of this," says Quentin. "You don't have to mentor her, Quentin, just help her to feel at home," says Liz. "After all, this will be her home from now on." Quentin contemplates this for a moment.

The next morning, Quentin is sitting by himself in the drawing room when Julia enters. He tells her that Liz has hired Daphne to be David's new governess. Julia is surprised to see him brooding over this, expecting him to be pleased. "In a way I am pleased," he tells her, "but I'm not used to my cousin Elizabeth acting the way she did last night." Julia grows more concerned and asks him what he means, and he tells her how there seemed to be something different about Elizabeth, as there is about Roger and Carolyn the past few days. Julia asks Quentin if he's seen any marks on her neck just as Liz enters the room, wearing a scarf.

Liz says hello to Julia, and Julia makes some small talk before looking to Quentin for a moment, and then remarking on Liz's outfit. "Is that a new dress, Elizabeth? I don't think I've ever seen it before," she says. Liz remarks she's had it for years. "And that scarf, it goes lovely with it. I wonder how that color would look with my outfit. Can I borrow it for a second?" The question seems to scare Liz quite a bit, and after fumbling words a bit, she suddenly remembers she "has an appointment in the village" and will be back later. Liz hurries out of the room, grabs a coat and leaves. Julia looks over to Quentin and they both seem to understand.

Julia is convinced Liz was hiding the bite marks, and thinks "that Roxanne may be trying to take over Collinwood by enslaving all who live here." Quentin tells her it was Professor Anderson that was invited to dinner last night, not Roxanne. Quentin is convinced there must be a connection between them. Julia asks Quentin how they might find out about this possibility, and Quentin tells her that "the only way may be to find Sebastian Shaw."

Episode 1260

Aired Friday April 23, 1971

After a replay of Thursday's "closing argument" and the titles, Carolyn answers the door at Collinwood and greets Professor Anderson, who has come for dinner. She brings him into the drawing room where Sebastian is having a drink. Anderson says hello in a menacing way, and Sebastian becomes very docile. Carolyn goes to get Roger and Liz. "You know this is wrong," Sebastian tells Anderson. Anderson grabs him by the collar and tells him that he and only he will decide right from wrong. He drops Sebastian back into the sofa right before Roger and Liz enter the room. Anderson greets them gallantly, kissing Liz's hand while Roger and Carolyn look at each other knowingly.

Barnabas wonders if Sebastian may know where to find Roxanne, since he had once been her servant. He thinks she may have sought him out first. Julia asks Barnabas if he thinks Sebastian had "rigged" the seance to free her, but Barnabas doesn't think so. "With Stokes and Anderson there, it seems unlikely he could have pulled some sort of trick," says Barnabas, but Quentin is suspicious of Anderson. "We know we can trust Stokes, but what about Anderson? There's something about him I just don't like," says Quentin. Julia and Barnabas are curious.

Anderson remarks on how much he enjoyed dinner, and Roger answers that it's "always a rarity when Mrs. Johnson doesn't overcook the fish." Liz tells Anderson that they invited him over to ask him something very important, but before she can finish, Roger then asks Anderson point-blank if he would mind if Daphne was offered a job as governess at Collinwood. "Liz wants to interview her first, of course," says Roger with a strange nod towards Liz. Anderson looks over to Liz, and smiles with "Well, I am sure Mrs. Stoddard will find nothing to worry about."

Barnabas asks Quentin if he knows anything about Anderson, and Quentin says he only has a bad feeling about him. Barnabas asks him if that feeling is jealousy over Daphne, which Quentin angrily denies. Quentin tells Barnabas that he intends to find out everything he can about Professor Anderson, because "I can't help feeling he's hiding something from us, from all of us."

Liz cannot believe how easily Anderson is willing to let Daphne go, but Anderson points out that there are many graduate students available to be assistants to him, and if Roger and the family have "affinity for Miss Hopkins, far be it from me to interfere with an opportunity for her." Carolyn has opened the bay window in the room and is looking outside, when Liz feels a chill. She gets up to close the window over Carolyn's objection - but when she swings it to close, she notices the reflections of people in one of the glass panes - she sees Sebastian, Carolyn and Roger, but not Anderson! She looks back at him talking to Roger, then back at the window. Her terror is growing when suddenly, Anderson pulls the window shut and stands before her. He glides his hand over it, showing no reflection, and coldly stares at Liz. "I'm sorry you saw that, my dear Mrs. Stoddard," he says, "Very sorry indeed," as he opens his mouth baring vampire fangs. Liz screams.

Episode 1259

Aired Thursday April 22, 1971

At Collinwood, Roger is pouring himself a drink when Liz enters and asks him why he changed his mind about sending David away. He evades the question at first, but then tells Liz that he wants to keep his son around a little longer. Liz is touched by this, and remarks how David will have to grow up and "leave the nest" at some point, but Roger counters that he already has a governess in mind.

Liz asks Roger who, and he replies "I was thinking of Professor Anderson's lovely young assistant, Miss Hopkins. David seemed quite taken with her, and I'm sure we could do better for her financially than the college." Liz wonders how qualified Daphne may be in dealing with children and what her background is, questions which Roger dismisses. Liz brings up that Daphne may be growing involved with Quentin, and that this might be awkward, but Roger points out how Victoria Winters had become close to Barnabas without it hurting her job. Liz sits and sadly reflects on Victoria for a moment, and comments on how she misses her. Roger asks Liz not to start an argument over Daphne, and offers to let Liz interview her to make sure.

At the old house, Quentin has told Barnabas and Julia about the strange behavior in Carolyn and Roger. Julia looks for logical explanations, but Barnabas insists that they somehow, subtly, look for fang marks on them both. Quentin says that he will try to quietly watch both Roger and Carolyn and see if their hunch is right.

Carolyn and Sebastian have arrived at Collinwood. Liz and Roger tell them about wanting to interview Daphne, but Liz then remarks on how Professor Anderson may not be willing to let her go so easily. Carolyn suggests inviting Anderson over to dinner to discuss the matter, since she's sure he'll be very reasonable about it. Sebastian looks uncomfortable with this, but a glare from Carolyn keeps him silent.

Barnabas and Julia think about what Quentin has told them. Julia asks what they will do if it is true, if Roger and/or Carolyn have come under the influence of Roxanne, and Barnabas says he does not know. Quentin pressures him about Roxanne, and reminds Barnabas that while he may have hated being a vampire, Roxanne might "view things differently." Julia tells Barnabas that Roxanne is not the same Roxanne he left back in parallel time. "Everyone there was different, Barnabas, "she says. "Think about Stokes' counterpart! Or mine!" Barnabas finally comes to grips and answers "You are both right. If it is true, we may have to destroy Roxanne Drew!"

Episode 1258

Aired Wednesday April 21, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's closing and the titles, we are back in the study where Roger sits at his desk with 2 fresh holes in his neck. Roxanne tells him that he is now her servant, and must bend to her will. He says he understands. She tells him that he will needed for "important things," but before she can go into them, there is a knock at the door of the study. They both say nothing, but there is another knock, and it is David outside, calling for his father. Roxanne moves back and out the window, which closes behind her as Roger rises and answers the door with a gruff "What do you want?" David is taken aback.

David asks his father if he's feeling okay, and while hiding one side of his neck, he says he is fine and that he has a lot of work to do, and that it's past David's bedtime. David asks him if what Aunt Elizabeth said was true, that his father wants to send him away to boarding school. Before Roger can answer, David talks about how he may be ready for that now, since Hallie seems to like it, but that he will miss Collinwood and the people there. "It used to be lonely here, but Carolyn has been home more lately, and since Quentin and Barnabas have moved here, I have more people to talk to.." Roger interrupts him and tells him not to worry, since he would rather hire a new governess and not send him away. David is surprised.

The next morning, David is telling Quentin about suddenly not being sent away, and how strange it was for his father to change his mind so quickly, since "my father is always so stubborn once he's made up his mind about something." Quentin is mildly interested in this, and then Carolyn tells David she is very glad he is staying, since so many things happen around Collinwood. Quentin asks her what she means by that, and she can only reply that "things are always happening around here." Quentin asks her if she has any plans for Sebastian, and suddenly Carolyn gets defensive "Why would I have plans for him?" Quentin answers that he only thought she was interested in him, and wondered how serious it was. Carolyn is relieved, and answers that they are just friends. Roger arrives and tells Carolyn that Sebastian is a good friend to have, and Carolyn agrees before they both leave. Quentin thinks this exchange over, and seems to think something is amiss here, since he knew Roger wasn't thrilled with Sebastian at first.

After a shot of the sun setting, we dissolve to a coffin in a darkened room in an abandoned house. The coffin lid begins to open, and Roxanne rises out of it. In the background, we hear some footsteps, and Roxanne hears them too as she starts to close the lid on her coffin. When she closes it, Anderson is standing there, smiling. "Good evening, my dear" he says.
