Episode 1276

Aired: Monday May 17, 1971

Kate Jackson's voiceover: "A new day dawns over the great house at Collinwood, after a terrifying night of evil. While several members of the family are under the power of that evil, others have barricaded themselves inside the old house on the estate, surrounding it with a barrier to keep the evil at bay during the seemingly endless hours of the night. On this day, they must decide how to face the evil and destroy it, without also harming the members of the family that are at its mercy..."

At the old house, it is morning. Julia and Barnabas are drinking some coffee in the living room and discuss how glad they are that the long night is finally over. Quentin comes downstairs and says that David is sleeping and is fine. "It's strange how Roxanne thought of him as Jamieson, when I've done the same," Quentin says. Barnabas agrees, though he points out "But at last we have some clue as to Roxanne's true identity. I intend to find out exactly who she is."

After the titles, Julia suggests looking through the Collins family history to see if there's any mention of a broken courtship between Jamieson Collins and anyone named Roxanne, but Quentin reminds her how the Collins family history is often "written more with wishful thinking than with truth." Barnabas agrees, and suggests that Professor Stokes may be helpful, since he has researched the family history and has "made discoveries of various things that most outsiders would never know." Barnabas decides to visit Stokes that day to see if he can find out anything about Roxanne.

Daphne comes downstairs and Quentin greets her with a smile. He thanks her again for coming to David's rescue. Julia asks her if she remembers anything of her past now that she has broken free of Anderson/Petofi's control. Daphne says she doesn't, and she still doesn't remember anything about her life before she was working as Anderson's assistant at the college. Quentin asks Julia if hypnotizing her again will help, but Julia answers that all that would most likely happen is that Daphne would begin to describe the life of Daphne Harridge Collins over 100 years ago. Daphne asks Julia why she describes someone else's life under hypnosis, and Julia has no answer. "I don't know. It could be anything," she says. Daphne answers "What if that's who I am?" Julia wonders.

Daphne presses the issue, but Julia insists that it would be "impossible" for her to be Daphne Harridge Collins, since that Daphne lived out a normal life and died years ago. Quentin agrees, saying "I know enough about my namesake's life that his wife did not die young. If I remember correctly, she even outlived him." Daphne gets more frustrated and confused, not knowing what her identity may be. Quentin takes her by the shoulders, looks in her eyes, and tells her "I don't care who you were, I only care who you are now. I care a great deal." Daphne holds him close while Julia awkwardly watches.

Barnabas is at Stokes' house discussing matters over sherry. Stokes says that he can try to research whatever he can about the life of Jamieson Collins for clues to Roxanne's past, but it will take time. "But," he adds, "I did discover something that you may find interesting." Barnabas asks what, and Stokes takes out an old yellow letter. "This, Mr. Collins," says Stokes. "It's a letter signed by a Professor Phillip Anderson, of the very college I teach at now." He hands the letter to Barnabas while continuing "Look at the date on the letter. October 21, 1909. I discovered that the college had a professor of anthropology and philosophy named Phillip Anderson at the turn of the century, who suddenly vanished in 1910. No trace of him was ever found. One can assume that was when he was transformed into the vampire he is now." Barnabas tells Stokes that what he has found matches the story Quentin had heard, but that finding Anderson has not been easy. "And as long as he has loyal servants under his power, it will be difficult to destroy him using a wooden stake as we attempted before. We will need something that will also frighten his servants as well." Barnabas looks at Stokes and says "A gun. With silver bullets. Lethal to the living dead, and to the living as well." Stokes smiles and says "Exactly."
