Episode 1265

Aired: Friday April 30, 1971

After a repeat of Thursday's close and the titles, Barnabas and Quentin stand in the secret mausoleum room with Angelique's ghost in front of them. Barnabas calls out to her, but all she does is smile and not answer. She looks over to Quentin curiously, and he attempts to communicate with her. When he calls her by name, she looks confused. "Why doesn't she know me?" he wonders. Barnabas reminds him that this Angelique died in 1840 without ever meeting him, after history was changed, "though perhaps you remind her of your namesake." Barnabas looks lovingly at Angelique. "I have missed you, " he says as he approaches her. He takes her hand to kiss it, but sadly looks at her and says "Your hand.....so cold. How I wish you could be with me again..." Quentin breaks the mood by asking "Why do you think she's here?" Barnabas looks at her and asks "Can you tell us nothing?" Though she does not speak, Angelique points towards Quentin's portrait with her free hand.

Back at Collinwood, Carolyn is searching the drawing room desk when Liz enters. "I still haven't found it," she tells Carolyn. "Professor Anderson will not be happy," Carolyn answers, to which Liz sadly says "I know." There is a knock at the front door, and when Liz answers it, it's Anderson. He steps in and looks around with a sneer. "I sense you have been unsuccessful at the task I have given you," he says. Liz apologizes, and says they have searched everywhere but cannot find the key anywhere. Anderson shrugs and says "No matter. Show me where the door is."

Liz and Carolyn lead Anderson to the attic door. Liz tells him that "that door is solid oak. No man could break it down." Anderson smiles and says "I am far from an ordinary man." He puts his hand on the knob and gives it a turn, then with a burst of strength, yanks it right out of the door. He drops the broken latch and swings the door open. Anderson heads upstairs with Liz and Carolyn as Carolyn asks "What did you need to come up here for anyway? I don't think anyone has been up here in years." Anderson reaches the attic and sees the empty easel standing alone. "It appears I have come up here for nothing, my dear. Nothing at all." With a frown we haven't seen from James Storm since he played Gerard's 1995 ghost, he angrily knocks the easel over with a swing of his hand. Carolyn and Liz look confused.

Back at the mausoleum, Barnabas is still trying to communicate with Angelique's ghost, but she continues to point at Quentin's covered portrait. "What have you come to tell us, Angelique?" asks Barnabas. Angelique makes a gesture to lift the cover off the portrait. Quentin understands, and removes the cloth, revealing the old decaying figure. "What is it?" asks Barnabas. "Why can't you speak to me...." he says in frustration, but Angelique points towards the portrait with both hands, and the image of decaying Quentin begins to blur. "Barnabas!" Quentin shouts. "Look!" As the two men look at the portrait, it blurs and gradually becomes a portrait of David Collins. Barnabas and Quentin wonder what this means as the portrait blurs and becomes the image of a skeleton. "David!" shouts Barnabas, as the portrait blurs some more and becomes the aged Quentin once again. Barnabas looks at Angelique and frantically asks her what it means, but Angelique looks very tired, and begins to fade away. "No, don't leave me," Barnabas pleads, but Angelique vanishes. "The meaning is unmistakable," says Barnabas. Quentin thinks a moment and then replies "I know. David's life is in danger. What else could it mean?" Barnabas and Quentin look at each other.
