Episode 1269

Aired: Thursday May 6, 1971

After a replay of Wednesday's close and the titles, Anderson switches on the light to see who is there, but David ducks around a corner in time. David carefully moves back towards the window where he came in. He moves through the darkened room towards the window, but the lights suddenly come on and Anderson is glaring at him. David freezes, and Anderson looks him over with a sneer. "So, my boy. You have followed me. Well, congratulations. Have you found what you wanted?" He moves towards David who backs away while telling Anderson to stay away. "What are you afraid of? In a moment, you will trust me more than your greatest friend," says Anderson as he moves closer to David. David is backed up against a doorway as Anderson gets closer, but suddenly, David takes a silver cross from out of his pocket and shines it in Anderson's eyes. Anderson screams and looks away as David nervously shouts "I know what you are! I'm not afraid of you!"

David is managing to hold Anderson at bay as Anderson yells "You will pay for this boy, you will pay dearly!" David moves back towards the window holding the cross on Anderson when suddenly from behind him comes Roxanne, fangs out and hissing. David spins around and manages to wave the cross in front of her, causing her to scream and move away from the window. David is growing more confident now, though he still wants to get out. He is about to start climbing through the window when the door he was near opens, and Roger enters the room David calls to him "Father! Watch out! They'll get you!" but all Roger does is angrily look at David and shout "David! Put down that cross this instant!" David shakes his head in disbelief as his father approaches him, demanding he drop the cross. "No father," he tearfully says, but then Liz and Carolyn enter the room from a different side and also demand David drop the cross. As his family moves towards him, a terrified David gives the cross a wide wave, pushing everyone back long enough for him to scamper through the window and back out into the woods. Anderson looks out the window angrily and declares "That interfering brat will now be the key to everything I want."

At the old house, Barnabas and Quentin are returning from the mausoleum room with Quentin's portrait, looking for a better hiding place when they hear David shouting to them. They hurriedly place the portrait in the secret room behind the bookcase when David runs in, frantic. Quentin asks him what's happened and where he's been, and David tells them that he followed Anderson and knows where he's hiding. Barnabas tells him that was a very dangerous and stupid thing to do, but David snaps back that he defended himself fine. Quentin says "Defended yourself? What happened?" David tells Quentin and Barnabas how he warded Anderson and Roxanne off with a silver cross, "just like what I read about in Carolyn's books. But then my father came in..." Barnabas interrupts "Roger? Roger was there?" David answers "Aunt Elizabeth and Carolyn too! He's got them all under his power! They tried to take my cross so he could get me too, but I wouldn't let them. I wouldn't let them!" Quentin takes his shoulders and says "I won't let them either, David. You did well tonight." He looks over towards Barnabas while he continues "You did a foolhardy thing by running after Anderson, but you may have helped us all a great deal. I'm proud of you." David gives Quentin a hug. Barnabas suggests that David go upstairs and rest after being through such an experience. David nods, and Barnabas looks at him and says "I'm proud of you too, David" before David smiles and goes upstairs.

Quentin tells Barnabas that Anderson will only move his hiding place again now that David has discovered it, and Barnabas responds that Angelique was right, since David is now in very grave danger. "It's me he wants," Quentin says. Barnabas asks why, and Quentin says "I don't know, but I'm going to find out."
