Episode 1298

Aired: Wednesday June 16, 1971

After a replay of Tuesday's close and the titles, Julia is trying to revive Liz as Barnabas decides it would be best if he left and Julia "convince Liz the best way she knows how that Liz was hallucinating." Julia understands and gets the medallion out of her purse as Liz starts to awaken. Julia tries to calm her and get her to concentrate on the medallion, but Liz is too agitated, repeating how "he had no reflection! How is that possible?" Julia tells her that "Of course Barnabas has a reflection, the light was playing tricks on your eyes." Liz looks at Julia confused and says "Barnabas? Has Barnabas been here?" Now Julia is confused and says "You haven't seen Barnabas?" Liz says "No. I thought I saw Professor Anderson.... Anderson! Anderson had no reflection Julia, how is that possible?" Julia breathes a sigh of relief, but then tries to convince Liz that she must have been hallucinating because of the lack of sleep. Julia offers her a sedative, and then says that once she is rested, they can begin the hypnoses sessions again. Liz lays down, and Julia looks her over.

At the old house, Barnabas is pacing nervously as Julia enters and tells him that Liz was suffering from traumatic flashes of memory and thought she didn't see Anderson in the window instead of not seeing Barnabas. Barnabas is relieved, but remarks how he has to remember to be more careful in his present condition. Julia tells Barnabas how she will try to erase the portions of Liz' memory that are giving her the nightmares, but she also wonders what Liz meant by her remarks on how the passing of time didn't affect her. Barnabas thinks it just may be that she's overtired, but Julia wonders if Petofi had left Liz with some sort of aftereffect that altered her mind and perceptions somehow. Barnabas wonders if anyone else in the family could still be under Petofi's "lingering evil" somehow, and Julia has no answer.

Julia returns to Collinwood to see Liz, who is going over some papers at the desk in the drawing room. When Julia asks Liz if she would like to begin the session, Liz asks her what she is talking about. Julia reminds her that she wanted to undergo hypnosis in order to retrieve lost memories, and Liz suddenly insists that she has no lost memories. Julia asks her if that means she remembers everything that happened with Professor Anderson, and Liz asks what she means. Julia asks "You must remember what happened tonight, when you thought you saw Anderson in the window," but Liz answers "I don't remember that happening. And wasn't Barnabas supposed to come by with you tonight, to ask about Willie Loomis returning?" Julia, confused, answers yes, but then asks Liz how she knew about Willie returning since Barnabas had never mentioned it to her. Liz answers "He must have, how would I know otherwise?" Julia has no answer as Carolyn enters the room and Liz tells her "Oh, Carolyn! I should tell you that a relative from New York has wired us that he is on his way here to stay with us a while." Carolyn asks Liz "Which distant New York relative is it?" "I don't know," Liz answers strangely. "Your Uncle Roger met him first and thought he resembled our father." Carolyn, confused, says "Mother, what do you mean? How could Uncle Roger meet him if he cabled us from New York? Roger hasn't been away in weeks." Liz thinks a moment and answers "I don't know. I just know that's what happens." Julia wonders what's going on with Liz.

Willie arrives at Collinwood looking for Julia, but Liz sees him and invites him in. She asks him how he's been, and he remarks on how he's been working at Windcliff and that he's felt "important up there." Liz tells him she thinks he come a long way, and how a lot of that progress had to do with Barnabas. Willie shyly agrees, and Liz then says that she thinks "it's a wonderful idea for you to be the groundskeeper of the entire estate. I'm sure you've talked over the financials with Barnabas, but I want you to know that it's perfectly all right with me." Surprised, Willie thanks Liz and says he'll "try it out" to see how it goes. Liz says goodnight, and Willie remarks to Julia and Carolyn "that was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Boy, that Mrs. Stoddard is a nice lady, you know?" Willie notices Julia deep in thought and asks her what's wrong, and Julia says "It may be nothing...." Carolyn asks Julia if she thinks her "mother is acting very strange lately." Julia answers that "I'm not sure, but it seems as if your mother is growing disconnected from time somehow." Carolyn wonders what this means.
