Episode 1376

Aired: Monday October 4, 1971

In a repeat of Friday's close, Angelique's spell has indeed produced a living, breathing Sarah, but she lies semi-conscious by the stairs where her spirit appeared. Barnabas goes to her and touches her hand. "It's warm!" he says. "Sarah! Sarah! Wake up!" Vicky looks at the exhausted Angelique and says "Did it work?" Angelique says "It would seem so." Barnabas continues to try to revive Sarah, who finally opens her eyes and sits up. She looks around for a moment as Barnabas says "Yes...look around you, Sarah. You are home! You are home with me again!" Sarah looks at Barnabas and says "With you?" Barnabas says yes, and Sarah says "But who are you?" Barnabas looks at Angelique and Vicky dismayed as Sarah studies him.

After the titles, Barnabas asks Sarah "Do you know who I am?" and Sarah shakes her head no. He asks "What do you remember?" Sarah says "I was somewhere else....how did I get here?" Barnabas tells her not to be frightened, and Vicky moves towards her. "Sarah, do you remember me?" she asks. Sarah says "Is my name Sarah?" Barnabas tells Angelique "It seems she remembers nothing at all!" Angelique says that her memory may return "in time." Sarah says she's very tired, and Vicky asks her if she'd like to go upstairs and lie down. Suddenly, Sarah says "Yes, Vicky. May I please go to my room?" Surprised, Vicky says "Sarah! You knew my name! You remember your room?" Sarah looks confused for a moment and says "I...I don't know how I knew that." Angelique steps in and says "Dear, you've had a bad dream, that's all. Vicky will take you upstairs where you can lie down for a while...." but before she can finish, Sarah passes out into Vicky's arms. Barnabas gets scared, but Vicky tells him that Sarah is only asleep and "feels very warm and alive." As Vicky puts Sarah on the sofa to sleep, Barnabas ponders aloud "Warm and alive....but with no memory of who she is. Just like Daphne. Oh, why didn't I think of that as a possibility?" Angelique tells Barnabas that Sarah remembered Vicky and her room somehow, but Barnabas answers that it may not mean that Sarah will ever remember who she really is. Meanwhile at Nicholas' house, Nicholas responds to a knock on the door, and it's Julia. She comes in with a smirk as Nicholas asks "Well? How is Miss Evans?" Julia scowls and says "Nicholas, you certainly have a focused mind. Miss Evans is right where she is supposed to be. In fact, everyone is where they are supposed to be. Everything is falling into place." Nicholas asks what she means and Julia smiles and answers "Our dear Angelique has made good use of her new powers tonight. She has given back to Barnabas something he wanted very very dearly.... and soon the pieces will fall into place to take it away forever..." as she finishes with a sneer, we dissolve to the innocent Sarah, sleeping on the couch at the old house.

Vicky watches Sarah sleep as Barnabas and Angelique pace a bit. Angelique tells Barnabas that she thinks Sarah will recover her memory since the had recognized Vicky. Barnabas answers that "Perhaps her loss of memory is a blessing." Angelique asks why, and Barnabas answers "The shock of knowing her true identity may be too much for that child to bear. How do you tell an innocent little girl that she died almost two hundred years ago?" Angelique looks at Sarah concerned, and Vicky says "Barnabas is right. If Sarah remembers who she is, she may even remember her own death. That would be too horrible!" Barnabas continues "There may be a way for her to avoid such tragedy." Angelique clutches her amulet, but Barnabas says "Julia Hoffman may be able to suppress those memories with hypnosis. Perhaps she could even suggest an identity for Sarah, similar to what Petofi did with Daphne." Angelique answers "But what he did didn't last, and his power was much more than what Julia Hoffman can do." Vicky disagrees, and says "Suggestions like that might take hold better in the mind of a child than of a grown woman, Angelique. It might be possible." Barnabas says he will go to Collinwood to find Julia, and tells Vicky and Angelique to watch Sarah. Vicky asks "What will we do if she wakes up and remembers?" Barnabas thinks a beat, but can only say "I don't know. I'll be back shortly." We pull back to see Nicholas and Julia are watching this through Nicholas' mirror. Julia says "Well, I'd better be getting to Collinwood. I mustn't keep Barnabas waiting." They look at each other and laugh.

Angelique looks out the window wondering what's taking Barnabas so long. Vicky looks at Angelique and says "Perhaps.....no, that wouldn't be good..." Angelique, curious, asks what she was about to say. Vicky looks out the window first, and then back at Angelique. "Perhaps you could do something about Sarah's memory." Angelique thinks a moment, and says "Perhaps I could, but I have no idea how Barnabas would feel about it." Vicky argues "Look, I'm sure Julia Hoffman can do something for her, but not as much as you can if you have your powers back. I know that! I've seen what you can do. " Angelique skeptically asks "What would you have me think for this child? I have no idea what Barnabas has in mind." Vicky agrees, saying "That's right. We'd never be able to explain a lost sister to the family. Barnabas said he was the last English relative." Angelique looks at Sarah and muses "It always struck me funny how Barnabas' sister was so much younger than him, and yet they were so close." Vicky nods, and says "People had children differently back then. Look at how Barnabas and his Uncle Jeremiah were about the same age." Angelique smiles and says "Yes, Vicky. You're right. Barnabas is old enough to be Sarah's uncle, isn't he?" She starts to finger the amulet again as Vicky smiles. Meanwhile at Collinwood, Barnabas enters and finds no one there. He calls for Julia, but there is no answer. He walks to the drawing room and starts to write her a note at the desk, but then he hears the doors open. He calls "Julia, is that you?" but when he steps out of the drawing room, he is shocked to see Maggie Evans standing before him.

Before Barnabas can say anything, Maggie says "Hello Barnabas! It's so good to see you again!" He smiles nervously and says "Maggie...it's good to see you looking so well." She tells him how Julia brought her back to Collinwood and that "I certainly hope to stay. I suppose it depends on what happens with David." Barnabas asks "David?" Maggie explains how she will become the governess again if David decides not to go to boarding school. Barnabas starts thinking about this and says "Really?" when Julia enters. Maggie says hello, but then excuses herself to go upstairs. Barnabas leads Julia into the drawing room and closes the door. "Why didn't you tell me Maggie Evans was back here?" he says gruffly. Julia plays innocent and says "I was going to tell you tonight, Barnabas. I had to go into town first." Barnabas says "Can you assure me she won't remember anything?" Julia says "Yes, of course. I wouldn't have released her otherwise." Barnabas snaps "That wasn't just your choice to make." Julia says "Barnabas, don't be so upset. Maggie is fine. She won't remember anything, you have nothing to worry about." Julia pours herself a brandy and then adds "Besides, if she claimed you were a vampire, she'd only wind up back in the sanitarium anyway." Barnabas looks at Julia curiously after this remark and says "Are you feeling all right?" Julia says "Of course, why?" Barnabas says "It's nothing. You just seem different somehow." Julia says "Maybe I'm just happy to see Maggie all right." Barnabas says "Perhaps. In any case, that wasn't what I came to see you about." Julia takes a drink and says "Oh? What did you want to talk to me about?" Barnabas says "Sarah." Julia plays dumb and asks "Sarah? Did she appear again?" Barnabas answers "Much more than that. We conducted Petofi's spell. Sarah is alive again." Julia feigns surprise. Meanwhile back at the old house, Sarah is sitting up, awake. Angelique asks her if she wants to wait in her room, but Sarah says "No, I'd rather wait here. Thank you." Angelique looks at Vicky and says "I hope this works out." Vicky says "I'm sure it will. I'm sure Barnabas will understand. Look how happy she is now." Sarah reads a book with Vicky and smiles. Barnabas and Julia enter the house, and Angelique goes to see them. "How is she?" Barnabas asks. Angelique starts to explain, and tells Julia "I don't think we'll need you to do what Barnabas asked." Confused, Barnabas asks "Why not?" Suddenly, Sarah drops her book and runs to Barnabas. She gives him a big hug, and through his surprise, he smiles "Sarah! You know me!" Sarah giggles and says "Of course I know you, Uncle Barnabas!" Confused, Barnabas looks at Angelique as Julia studies the situation.
